Breaking Britain: A Podcast about the Politics of a Disunited Kingdom
After months of campaigning, voters in Scotland, Wales and parts of England went to the polls on 6 May 2021. While local elections and a byelection signalled that the Conservative Party is still dominant in England, strong results for the Scottish National Party in Scotland and the Labour Party in Wales indicate a very different picture for two other member nations of the United Kingdom. In Scotland, initial analysis in the Scottish Election Study set out how the outcomes of elections to the Scottish Parliament reflect the culmination of a widespread shift in party loyalties that has been opening up since the beginning of devolution in the late 1990s.This week we have been joined once again by David Leask to examine what these election results can tell us about the state of the UK Union. Through a long career in Scottish journalism as Chief Reporter at the Herald and now as a columnist for a wide range of other publications including the Herald and the Times, he has covered the remarkable transformation of Scottish political culture over the past two decades. David is ideally placed to reflect on how these trends are changing Scotland's relations with the rest of the UK and the wider world. The background music is by Through the City by Crowander, and the production for this podcast was by Daniel Mansfield.
Breaking Britain: A Podcast about the Politics of a Disunited Kingdom
As part of the Europe's Borderlands research group at the King's College London European Studies Department, this podcast series will take a deeper look at how the United Kingdom's crisis of unity will affect the nations on the islands of Britain and Ireland. In this episode, recorded on 28 January 2021, we examine how debates over Scottish independence interact with wider geopolitical pressures. How do international tensions over security and great power competition affect Scottish politics? What would the foreign and defence policy of an independent Scotland look like? In what way will transnational ideological trends affect Scotland whether as an independent actor or still within the UK Union state? To help us explore these themes, this week we have been joined by David Leask. Through a long career in Scottish journalism, first as Chief Reporter at the Herald and now at a wide range of publications including the Times, he has frequently covered how Scottish politics and society have interacted with and been affected by wider geopolitical pressures. With his impressive work examining Scotland's role on the global stage, David Leask provides us with fascinating insights into the changing nature of the geopolitics of Scotland. The background music is by Brother Monsplaisir, and the production for this podcast was by Daniel Mansfield.
David Leask looks at the curious link between Scotland's national bard and Russia.

Alexis Normand from Saskatoon feminist vocal group Rosie and the Riveters joins us on Episode 372 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about their great new album "Ms. Behave". Named after the World War 2 feminist labour icon, Rosie the Riveter - the band are a study in contrasts – three voices, the bright red lipstick, the curls, the post war dress, vintage harmonies and a sassy choreographed stage show - coupled with songs that whether playful or serious are deliberately intended to provoke, empower and inspire. It’s a great interview - well worth sticking around for. And, as always, we also check out more of the latest new releases including new music from Chris LaVancher, Joe Jencks, John McCutcheon, Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita, David Leask, Scott Anthony Andrews and Tom Rush.
Originally from Jedburgh, Scotland, David Leask is a powerful performing songwriter, who has built an artistic bridge between the influences of his birthplace and the fresh possibilities of his adopted Canadian home to produce five critically-acclaimed CD's and numerous international songwriting awards in different genres. Songwriters Magazine called David, "the most consistent Canadian songwriting competition winner." He was also awarded the Mississauga Established Performing Artist of the Year. David's sixth and latest recording, "Six in 6/8" is available now.
"Leask brings to his music a compellingly honest baring of the soul." - Toronto Star "Dave was such a rare treat to discover - one of those genuine talents with a truly natural connection between his guitar, his voice and his lyrics - a rare original." - Shari Ulrich, Songwriters Association of Canada Following 3 critically acclaimed releases garnering national airplay on radio and CMT, "Underneath" is the rich and robust culmination of thousands of shows played, over 100 songs written, the stellar contributions of over 25 world class musicians, and many inventive days and nights of bringing it all to life in 6 Toronto and Nashville studios. Still, DAVID LEASK attributes just one week in 2012 spent immersed in world renowned bass player Victor Wooten's Music and Nature Camp near Nashville with hitting his artistic restart button and bringing him back to the foundations of music making. David recalls "When I left there I felt closer to the core of my musical instincts and had a clearer vision for the kind of record I wanted to make." From the curiosity-piquing guitar arpeggio that introduces “Words” to the poignant vocal declaration that closes “This Time 'Round”, "Underneath" provides a revealing and relatable view of what's beneath the waves of everyday life, love and the world as we know it. David co-wrote 11 of the album's 13 tracks. He also recorded two songs penned by celebrated Nashville writers Doug Gill (“Stronger Back”) and Darrell Scott & Beth Neilsen Chapman (“This Time Round”) that thematically and stylistically compliment the collection as a whole.
