Over the course of his career, Brad has trained thousands of EMTs and paramedics around the world and built one of the pioneering online EMS education platforms through National Medical Education & Training Center Inc. Together, Brad and Kiera co-authored The Saved Effect ( https://www.amazon.com/Saved-Effect-Stories-Reclaimed-Willing/dp/1637635923 ), a deeply human exploration of what happens after a life is saved - the ripple effects that extend into families, futures, communities, and generations. Kory Pearn never set out to start a media company. A fire captain with over two decades in the fire service, his journey into building Crackyl Magazine came after a life altering moment that forced him to confront everything he had built. After nearly losing his life to congestive heart failure, Kory found himself questioning his identity, his pace of life, and the sustainability of how he was living. In an instant, everything he had could have been taken away, including the very things he was working so hard to protect. In this episode of The Chief Exchange, Kory shares how that experience reframed everything. We talk about firefighter wellness, why you do not just get lucky in life, and how you must prepare and control what you can before it is too late. He explains the danger of building a life you cannot slow down, why what you are not changing you are choosing, and how dedication without sustainability becomes self destruction disguised as commitment. We also dive into actionable steps for building something on the side while still working in public safety, the importance of curiosity and tenacity, and why you just have to start instead of waiting for the perfect moment. From stoicism and maintaining your why, to managing the balance between work and home life, to even a soft launch of his upcoming book, this conversation is about perspective, discipline, and building a life that can withstand anything, because what you try to avoid may still happen anyway.

When leadership gets real, titles stop mattering and habits take over. Fire Captain Mark Andrew joins me to share what he's learned leading in the fire service, where trust, communication, and decision making aren't abstract leadership ideas. They are the difference between a smooth operation and a dangerous one. We dig into why so many people are promoted without real leadership training, then fall back on outdated models they inherited from the leaders before them.Mark walks me through a practical way to learn from “horrible bosses” without carrying bitterness, and how to turn those memories into a clear personal leadership standard. We spend a lot of time on active listening as a critical leadership skill, not just for morale but for better situational awareness and smarter calls under pressure. If you've ever wondered why teams stop speaking up, or why problems “suddenly” blow up after months of warnings, this will hit home.We also unpack the leadership trap of swinging from micromanagement to delegation that turns into abdication, then land on the middle path Mark emphasizes: presence. You'll hear concrete examples of delegating with follow-up, confirming understanding so people don't leave with different interpretations, and building trust through empathy plus accountability. If you lead people in any field and want stronger leadership habits, better team culture, and clearer decision making under stress, you'll take a lot from this conversation.
When the alarm sounds, there's no time for theory—only truth. Fire Captain Mark Andrew joins I Am Refocused Radio to break down what leadership really looks like when lives are on the line. Drawing from decades in the fire service, Mark shares hard-earned lessons that separate leaders people trust from those they don't.This conversation goes beyond corporate buzzwords and into the raw reality of leading in high-stakes environments. From building trust under pressure to understanding why presence beats micromanagement, Mark reveals how real leadership is forged in moments most people never see. When the alarm sounds and lives hang in the balance, there's no time for micromanagement, ego, or empty commands. In the firehouse, leadership isn't a theory-it's survival. Fire Captain Mark Andrew has spent his career learning what separates good leaders from poor ones, often through hard-earned lessons while fighting fires. In LEADING THROUGH THE HEAT, he distills decades of experience into a practical guide that proves the principles forged in emergency response apply to any workplace:Why presence matters more than micromanagingHow to build trust when stakes are high The difference between commanding and inspiring What it means to truly care about your team How to transform from worker to leader This isn't another corporate playbook filled with buzzwords and case studies. It's an honest, sometimes raw account of leadership failures and successes witnessed in one of the most demanding professions on earth. Captain Andrew doesn't just tell you what good leadership looks like. He shows you through real stories of officers who earned loyalty in the fire service's crucible and those who lost it.Get the book: https://a.co/d/047Yu9UKBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/i-am-refocused-radio--2671113/support.Subscribe now at YouTube.com/@RefocusedNetworkThank you for your time.

Scott Holman, CEO and Founder of Red Line Safety, is on a mission to change that with innovative technology designed to protect firefighters in real time and improve their long-term health.Scott, a retired firefighter himself, brings decades of experience to this venture. His company builds wearable devices that gather physiological and environmental data, an advanced communication infrastructure to transmit the data, and a cloud-based dashboard for incident managers to monitor conditions and make data-driven decisions. "We create a solution that not only protects firefighters in real time but also helps them address long-term health issues," Scott explained during this episode of Superpowers for Good. The technology has already proven its potential. In one pilot test, Red Line Safety identified a critical health issue in a 24-year-old firefighter, enabling life-saving surgery. Scott shared, “When you tell firefighters these stories, they can't wait to use the technology. They want to know what they're exposed to, how they're responding physiologically, and they want to create an exposure record.”The market opportunity for Red Line Safety is enormous. Scott explained that the global market for firefighter safety equipment is valued at $20 billion. With patented technology and first-to-market status, Red Line Safety is poised to scale quickly. The company has already attracted attention from national and international organizations. To bring this life-saving technology to more firefighters, Red Line Safety is raising capital through a regulated crowdfunding campaign on Wefunder. Scott's vision, paired with Red Line Safety's groundbreaking technology, makes that goal closer to a reality.tl;dr:Red Line Safety develops wearable tech and cloud systems to protect firefighters in real time.Founder Scott Holman, a retired firefighter, brings decades of firsthand experience to the company's mission. The technology has already saved lives and provides invaluable data for long-term firefighter health. The $20 billion global market offers enormous potential for scaling Red Line Safety's patented solutions.A Wefunder campaign invites everyone to invest in this innovative, life-saving technology. How to Develop Bias for Action As a SuperpowerScott Holman describes his superpower as a “bias for action.” This stems from his Marine Corps training, which instilled a belief that he could accomplish any goal he set his mind to. “I came out of [boot camp] feeling extremely confident, like there's nothing I couldn't do,” Scott shared. This confidence has driven him to tackle challenges head-on, even in unfamiliar territory.Early in his life, Scott exemplified his bias for action by building a home for his family. Despite having no prior experience, he purchased a kit home, bought land in a rural community, and assembled the house largely on his own. “I realized we needed a house, and the only way I could do it was to build it myself. And I did,” he recalled, inspiring others to take bold steps as well.Tips for Developing the Superpower:Don't talk yourself out of trying something just because you haven't done it before.Believe in your ability to learn and adapt as you go.Build a support system—seek advice and collaboration from others with complementary skills.Don't fear failure; instead, view it as a learning opportunity, as Edison famously did.Take the first step and commit to seeing the project through, even if you need to pivot.By following Scott's example and advice, you can make a bias for action a skill. With practice and effort, you could make it a superpower that enables you to do more good in the world.Remember, however, that research into success suggests that building on your own superpowers is more important than creating new ones or overcoming weaknesses. You do you!Guest ProfileScott Holman (he/him):Founder & CEO, Red Line SafetyAbout Red Line Safety: Red Line Safety is a mission-driven technology company founded by a retired Fire Captain and U.S. Marine Corps veteran, dedicated to protecting those who protect us. //The Wire//2300Z May 21, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: SOUTH AFRICAN PRESIDENT VISITS WHITE HOUSE. AX ATTACK STRIKES FRANCE, ONE JUVENILE FATALITY. KNIFE ATTACK OCCURS IN AMSTERDAM, MULTIPLE DEAD AND WOUNDED.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE------International Events-France: Yesterday evening a 14-year-old boy was murdered by an assailant in Nogent-sur-Oise, a small town north of Paris. Local authorities have not released any information regarding the attack, however locals who witnessed the incident state that the assailant murdered the boy with an ax in the parking lot of a grocery store.Netherlands: A stabbing attack was reported in Amsterdam yesterday, resulting in two fatalities, and the wounding of two responding police officers.AC: This situation does not appear to be a random attack, but rather a domestic situation that occurred in an area well known for heavy drug use. As such, the circumstances of the two fatalities are not clear; Dutch authorities have stated that the responding officers did fire their weapons during this incident, however very few details have indicated what actually happened here.-HomeFront-Midwest: Disaster recovery efforts continue throughout the region, following the severe weather systems that have caused devastation throughout the region. Local authorities in St. Louis are investigating their emergency response procedures after a substantial tornado ripped through the downtown metro area on Friday. AC: Today local authorities stated that the city's tornado siren network was not functioning at the time it was needed, resulting in no tornado warnings being sounded. The head of the St. Louis City Emergency Management Agency has been placed on leave after it became clear that the citywide siren system didn't actually work, and possibly had not been operationally tested in decades. Routine tests are normally mandatory, however when asked about it the interim CEMA official (a Fire Captain temporarily appointed to the job while the investigation continues) did not provide a date as to when the system was last tested, other than when it was installed in 1999. From the descriptions of what possibly happened, it sounds like the physical button and/or switch to activate the tornado sirens did not work when officials attempted to activate it.Washington D.C. - This morning South African President Cyril Ramaphosa conducted a state visit to the White House. During the visit, the main point of focus was the domestic situation in South Africa, with President Trump pressing Ramaphosa regarding the concerns of genocide within his nation.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comments: Despite the smiles and handshakes presented to the media, the state visit by South African leadership did not go well. Though the tone was not as openly hostile as Zelenskyy's infamous visit, the ideas conveyed were equally serious (if not moreso). When President Ramaphosa echoed his previous statements flat-out denying that any genocide was taking place, President Trump's team played various video clips showing evidence that these statements are false. Considering that this audio/visual presentation was pre-arranged (but interestingly, not announced beforehand), the White House probably knew how this situation might go and had planned this meticulously. In short, this visit was probably the White House's attempt to put South African leadership on notice regarding their aspirations for ethnic cleansing. Before the civilizational decline of recent times South Africa was a powerful player in the region, and the White House is probably trying to curb the increasingly exponential rise in cultural violence that is driving South Africa further into a state of decline. Whether or not these efforts will pan out, is anyone's guess.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//
