The district is trying to balance it all—supporting students’ voices while keeping things safe and orderly. The protests come as frustration grows nationwide over ICE’s actions, including the deaths of two U.S. citizens. Some students say they’re scared to even show up to school. The district reiterated its policy: ICE can’t enter non-public areas of schools without a judge-signed warrant. But fear lingers. Enrollment has dropped by thousands since ICE activity ramped up in 2025, according to the Gwinnett County Association of Educators. For now, GCPS is working with students to keep protests peaceful and on-campus. STORY 3: Scott McCray’s lasting impact on downtown Lawrenceville When Scott McCray first set his sights on expanding his restaurant footprint, downtown Lawrenceville wasn’t exactly buzzing. “It was quiet—really quiet,” he said. “Not much going on, but I saw potential.” That was back in the early 2000s, when the corner spot he wanted—a beat-up old drugstore—wasn’t even available. So, he waited. By 2006, McCray’s Tavern opened on Perry Street, and two decades later, it’s a cornerstone of Lawrenceville’s now-vibrant Square. Today, McCray owns nine restaurants, including Perry Street Chophouse and several McCray’s Taverns across metro Atlanta. But he’s not done yet. “We’ve got another building on the Square,” he teased. “Still figuring out what to do with it, but we’re working on something.” And then there’s St. Patrick’s Day—his annual “Perry Street festival” that shuts down the street, packs the rooftop deck, and unofficially kicks off spring. Reflecting on 20 years in the business, McCray still seems a little surprised. “I didn’t grow up dreaming about restaurants,” he said. “But once I opened my first place, I knew. In fact, her journey started far from a classroom—in a doctor’s office in Nassau, Bahamas, where she worked as a physician. But life has a funny way of rerouting us. Fifteen years ago, she moved to the U.S. with her husband and began the long, grueling process of earning her medical license here. To make ends meet, she started substitute teaching. “I thought it’d just be temporary,” she said. “But when I walked into GIVE Center East, something clicked. I knew—this is where I’m supposed to be.” Fast forward to now: Richardson, who’s been teaching biology at GIVE for four years, was just named Gwinnett County Public Schools’ 2027 Teacher of the Year. It’s a rare honor for a teacher at an alternative school, and Richardson doesn’t take it lightly. At GIVE, Richardson works with students who’ve been written off by others. “These kids have been told they’re failures, that one mistake defines them,” she said. “But I believe in second chances. STORY 5: Republican state House leaders unveil plan to abolish homeowner property taxes Georgia Republicans are making a bold promise: no more property taxes for homeowners by 2032. Sounds great, right? But the details? Well, they’re complicated. House Speaker Jon Burns unveiled the plan Wednesday, calling it “historic tax relief” aimed at easing the financial strain on homeowners. Rising home values, he said, have made the current system “unsustainable.” The idea is to gradually phase out property taxes on primary residences, but here’s the catch—local governments rely on that money. A lot of it. Property taxes fund schools, police, fire departments—you name it. So, what happens when that revenue disappears? Burns’ plan would let cities and counties make up the difference by raising sales taxes or adding fees for specific services. But sales taxes are unpredictable, especially during economic downturns, and some areas might struggle to generate enough revenue. And then there’s the political hurdle. To make this happen, lawmakers need a constitutional amendment, which requires two-thirds approval in both chambers and a public vote. Oh, and the Senate? They’re focused on slashing income taxes instead. For now, the House hasn’t released all the details, but one thing’s clear: this proposal is ambitious—and it’s going to spark a lot of debate. Bo Hatchett shared his own experience: “I had an outdoor classroom at North Habersham Middle, and it made a huge difference. Every kid should have that chance.” Sen. Sheikh Rahman added, “Kids are glued to screens. Getting them outside? It’s good for their bodies, their minds—everything.” The program will run for three years before lawmakers decide what’s next. First of all I speak with Jane Brown, Honorary President of the Robert Burns World Federation, and ex-manager of The Globe, Robert Burns's favourite haunt when he lived in Dumfries during the last eight years of his life. Jane has attended and spoken at many Burns Nights all over the world, so there's no one better to talk about with Burns's life which had several links with food and drink: there's Burns Night and the Address to a Haggis, his time as an exciseman and as a farmer, and his time at the Globe. Then there's the Globe itself and all of the precious artefacts contained within it that have been painstakingly conserved by owners Teresa Church and David Thomson.David and Teresa also own the Annandale Distillery, which produces a delicious and unique single malt whisky. It's available unpeated and called Man O'Words, after Robert Burns, and the other is peated and called Man O'Sword, after the other local historical figure associated with Dumfries, Robert the Bruce. Most investors never question the hierarchy they're operating in. They borrow money, take on operational risk, manage tenants, absorb volatility, and send a large portion of every payment upstream to the lender.  If something breaks, if a tenant stops paying, if the market turns—the obligation to the bank doesn't change.  This is the Mr. Burns model: the banks sit at the top of the building collecting checks, while everyone else does the work below. The slow flip model flips that hierarchy entirely. Instead of rehabbing properties or betting on appreciation, the investor becomes the lender. Short-term private money is used to acquire low-dollar properties, then paid off quickly through long-term owner financing.  For the first few years, the deal feels tight. Cash flow is modest. But once the private capital is gone, the asset is owned free and clear—and the payments keep coming for decades. No leverage. No refinancing risk. No dependency on market timing. What makes this approach powerful isn't just the math, though the math is staggering. It's the positioning. Ultra-affordable housing behaves differently from traditional rentals. Demand doesn't disappear in downturns. People can always move down in price—but there's a floor they can't go below. And by structuring the deal as the bank, the investor removes themselves from the operational chaos that destroys so many otherwise "good" deals. In this episode, we sit down with Scott, a real estate investor who's been in the game since the 1990s, got crushed in the 2008 collapse, and rebuilt with a model explicitly designed to survive the next downturn.  We talk about why slow flips aren't about patience for patience's sake, how amortization quietly creates generational cash flow, and why the investors who win long term are usually the ones willing to give up speed early in exchange for control later. He has been investing in real estate since 1994 and has completed well over six hundred deals, continuing to be a leader in the industry. Two days ago, a three-judge 9th Circuit Court of Appeals panel voted 2-1 to allow California's new re-districting of congressional seats remain in place for the upcoming 2026 mid-term elections, effectively ensuring that the Democrats will secure an additional five House seats.  The majority opinion consists largely of 70 pages of politically partisan word-salad so commonly produced by the liberal 9th Circuit when it simply wants to lock in a win for the Progressive Fascist Democrats.The dissent by Judge Kenneth Lee, however, is ON FIRE, and exposes the racist fecklessness of California Governor Gavin Newsom—a man who appears incapable of not lying about any subject whatever—in pushing this Prop 50 re-districting through the already super-majority California.

CIA Director Bill Burns' past meetings with Jeffrey Epstein have raised serious concerns about the extent of Epstein's influence over powerful government figures. At the time of their encounters in 2014, Burns was serving as Deputy Secretary of State, while Epstein had already been a registered sex offender for six years following his 2008 conviction. Despite Epstein's criminal record and widely known reputation, Burns reportedly met with him multiple times, including at Epstein's townhouse in Manhattan. The alleged purpose of these meetings was to seek career advice on transitioning to the private sector—an explanation that only deepens the discomfort surrounding such a relationship. For a high-ranking diplomat to consult a convicted sex offender for professional guidance signals either shockingly poor judgment or a normalization of Epstein's continued access to the elite.What makes the situation even more troubling is the lack of transparency from government institutions. The CIA has issued vague assurances that the meetings were harmless and limited, but they have not explained why a senior U.S. official would be turning to Epstein for any form of counsel in the first place. Meanwhile, the White House has refused to comment. These evasions come at a time when public trust in the Epstein investigation is already eroded, and they only reinforce the perception that Epstein's true reach into the halls of power is being deliberately downplayed. A South Dakota tribal leader discussed working with the state government on health care and law enforcement during a speech Wednesday, as South Dakota Searchlight's Meghan O'Brien reports. Rosebud Sioux Tribe President Kathleen Wooden Knife delivered the annual State of the Tribes address to lawmakers. She backed two pieces of legislation that impact tribal nations. She wants support to move toward a tribal-managed care model. That would pool Medicaid funding and allow tribes to negotiate costs for off-reservation care. She says support for managed care is essential for tribal members. “Imagine that when a patient is looking for an appointment, the managed care call center helps find the best appointment, with the least waiting time.” State. Rep. Will Mortenson (Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe/R-SD) from Fort Pierre is sponsoring a bill to help with the effort. “I think this is among the most groundbreaking proposals that will come before the legislature this year.” President Wooden Knife also supports a bill that would add tribal police to the state's legal definition of a certified law enforcement officer. That would add protections, like making it easier to prosecute people who assault tribal officers on non-tribal land. State Rep. Peri Pourier (Oglala Sioux Tribe/R-SD) from Rapid City, who recently switched her party affiliation from Democratic, is on a state committee studying the overrepresentation of Native American children in foster care. There is no legislation on that this year, but she says committee members are making progress. “They're getting in the room, they're having the conversations they need to have, and they're coming up with mutually beneficial solutions.” There are nine tribal nations in South Dakota. Nearly 10% of people in the state identify as Native American. The Ketchikan Indian Community recently purchased and will convert the former Salmon Falls Resort into the state's first tribally led addiction healing center. (Photo: Hunter Morrison / KRBD) Alaska has one of the highest rates of fatal drug overdoses in the country, but addiction treatment services in Southeast Alaska are limited. As KRBD's Hunter Morrison reports, the Ketchikan Indian Community (KIC) is looking to change that by opening the state's first tribally led addiction healing center. About 15 miles north of downtown Ketchikan, Second Waterfall gushes into a rocky shoreline. The natural wonder can be seen – and heard – from inside the clubhouse of the former Salmon Falls Resort, a longtime tourist destination for fishing, dining, and lodging. A long and blue staircase out the door leads directly to the large fall. The 11-acre facility has gone through many hands over the years and was foreclosed on in November. KIC purchased the property, in cash, two days after finding out it was up for grabs. KIC President Gloria Burns says the new facility will blend Western and traditional healing practices that will focus on an individual's needs. “It met all of the qualifications we needed to be able to really move forward on a wellness center. For some people, they're going to say that ‘my dissociation for not speaking my language is so profound that I can't get by, and that is my path to healing.' Some will say to us, ‘I dream of fish every day in the morning glory, I need to be on the water, I need to be providing for my family.'” A 2020 study from a Ketchikan nonprofit found that addiction treatment is one of the most pressing health needs in the area, but the island has just two addiction treatment facilities. Southeast Alaska's only detox center, in Juneau, closed about a year ago. Unlike some tribally run healing centers, which are only open to tribal members or Native people, KIC's new facility will be open to everyone. “We recognize that it takes the entire village to make somebody well. You can't make the body well by just making the hand, and the arm, and the foot well. You have to make everything well.” The tribe is still fleshing out a plan for what the healing center will look like and how it will operate, but Burns hopes it will be open next fall.
