This story is about a risk to dogs and other pets -- from a common household item and the consequences can be deadly. On the weekend, listener Ian Reid wrote to us, hoping to raise awareness about a problem he did not foresee. His email says, in part:"I lost a beloved dog this weekend due to suffocation from a chip bag. It was tragic, quick, devastating and so unnecessary. Quick research on the internet shows that this is the most common cause of pet strangulation."To talk more about this, we reached out to Bonnie Harlan after finding out about her non-profit organization, which is called: Prevent Pet Suffocation. Bonnie is located in Texas, and she receives emails and requests from people all over the world whose pets have suffocated in food packaging. She had a very similar experience, which prompted her to start her non-profit. She spoke with guest host, Alex Guye.

It's known as a 'silent' disease, as there's typically no symptoms until an individual fractures a bone. Ian Reid is an endocrinologist and Distinguished Professor at the University of Auckland. He was part of the Bone and Joint Research Group who were awarded the Prime Ministers Science Prize in 2015 for their work revealing the widely held belief of needing extra calcium for bone health is a myth. He has the latest results of a study which finds an injectable treatment for osteoporosis reduces fractures by a third in women over 65 years.
