On the Saturday November 16, 2024 edition of The Richard Crouse Show we meet multi award-winning Canadian singer-songwriter and pianist Laila Biali. She has headlined festivals and venues spanning five continents from New York City's Carnegie Hall to Beijing's National Centre for the Performing Arts, and the Washington Post says she “masterfully mixes jazz and pop, bringing virtuosity and unpredictability to songs that are concise and catchy.” Her latest album “Wintersongs,” is her 10th recording as a bandleader and her first release in almost 2 years. Best described as a musical love letter to winter, it's an entirely fresh and original offering, composed from a serene cabin surrounded by snow-capped mountains during a writing retreat in the heart of Canada's Rocky Mountains.  We will talk about “Wintersongs,” how a car accident altered the course of her career, singing with Sting and much more. Then, we get to know documentary filmmaker and investigative journalist Roxana Spicer. Her new book “The Traitor's Daughter,” is about her decades-long quest to understand her extraordinary mother, who was born in Lenin's Soviet Union, served as a combat soldier in the Red Army, and endured three years of Nazi captivity.

The Juno-winning Canadian jazz singer and pianist Laila Biali is back with a new album, “Wintersongs,” which was inspired by some time she spent in Banff. She says the album brings her back to her roots as a classical pianist — a path that was cut short after a car accident changed her life at 15. Laila sits down with Tom Power to talk about the record, how it blends different sides of herself, and a difficult new challenge she's facing in both her life and music.

JUNO award winning musician Laila Biali is heading to the province and will perform at the Harvest Music Festival on Saturday. She has a brand new album - it's called Your Requests.

The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

Singer, pianist and songwriter Laila Biali recently released Your Requests, built around a collection of songs from the Great American Songbook that were requested by her fans. After a string of projects of her original songs and more contemporary covers, the album was a departure for her. After spending years living in New York, Laila moved back to her native Canada to raise her son, along with her husband, drummer and producer Ben Wittman, who she met when the two were working with the singer-songwriter Paula Cole. Laila had established herself in New York as a reliable and sought after collaborator - she worked with Sting, Chris Botti and Suzanne Vega. After moving to Toronto she began focusing more on her solo career. It paid off. In 2018 she won a Juno Award for Vocal Jazz Album of the Year. And she hosts the popular radio show Saturday Night Jazz on CBC 2. Here she talks about her career, what it's like being married to her closest collaborator, motherhood, loyalty, leaving New York to return to her native Canada, leaning into limitations, and how the pandemic led her to renew her “vows to music.” www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.wbgo.org/studios
