In this episode of the 'Stories to be tolled' blog series, Tracy DW looks briefly at the contemporary implications of the war and crisis. Through a critical lens, she asks how the narratives of victors and victims shape our understanding of history and reflects on its profound impact on the human condition and the complexities of narrative control in times of conflict. Listeners are urged to confront the uncomfortable truths of historical and ongoing injustices, from the colonial conquests of the past to the current geopolitical tensions. This short reflection serves as a poignant reminder that the lessons of history are not merely relics of the past, but vital insights that inform our present and future. Tracy invites listeners to reflect on the broader consequences of war, not just in Ukraine but in the historical context of colonialism and empire building. With a major war raging in Europe, a seemingly more expansionist Trump in the Whitehouse, and China's long held desire to invade Taiwan, is Britain prepared militarily? It's hard to tell. The current Labour government is still refusing to set out in detail its plans for Defence, including when it might increase spending to 2.5% of GDP. Instead, we are left waiting for the publication of a new Strategic Defence Review. So are Starmer and co missing an opportunity to be mega Orderers? To understand these issues and more, for our first episode in partnership with the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), we're joined by Matthew Savill. He's the Director of Military Sciences at the London-based defence and security think tank. His team focusses on understanding trends in modern warfare and its impact on military strategy, capabilities and planning. Before joining RUSI he spent over 20 years in national security roles in government, starting as an intelligence analyst, and later moving on to policy and operations, working in both the Ministry of Defence and the UK Cabinet Office, and on deployments in Iraq, the Middle East and Afghanistan. Jason and Matthew discuss on the UK's role in defense and security, the challenges faced by the UK in military procurement and capabilities, and the need for the UK to maintain its status as a major global player. They compare the approaches in France and the UK, and whether we're in a potential pre-war era, and whether Britain needs to maintain independent military capacities. As they Order the Disorder, they look at whether AI could be the way Britain becomes Mega Orderers, and Matthew leaves with a message for Starmer: invest in people. A Chinese envoy has called on both parties to the Russia-Ukraine conflict to remain calm and exercise restraint.
The 19th G20 Summit recently concluded on November 19, 2024 in Rio, and given that the overarching themes of the summit were quite relevant to the developing world, China's engagements struck home with countries like Brazil and South Africa. From talking about its major role in alleviating poverty and hunger, to launching an alliance on Open Science and reiterating the importance of 'Friends of Peace on the Ukraine Crisis', China's pitch at the G20 clearly demonstrated its ambitions to play a vital role in the grouping. In this episode of All Things Policy, Manoj Kewalramani discusses with Anushka Saxena how to see through some of China's rhetoric, and which statements and initiatives should one continue to watch out for. Manoj also talks about the daylight in India and China's perspectives on bilateral relations and the two sides' roles in the region and the world, as evident from the meeting between their foreign/ external affairs ministers on the sidelines of the G20 Summit. In the final days of Biden's presidency, the paranoia seems to have reached new heights. Behind the scenes, the so-called 'war party'—those pulling the strings of this administration—are making moves that could set the stage for disaster. And now, the decision to authorize Ukraine's military, or perhaps more accurately, NATO operators, to strike deep into Russia's territory using U.S.-made ATACMS long-range missiles has been made. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chroniclesoflife/support

A discussion with @dr.mohammadmalkawi1625 on the Ukraine Crisis and what it means for the current world order. Is the looming threat of another world war a fantasy? Or is it just a matter of time... The post Is WWIII Near? – Dr. Mohammad Malkawi first appeared on Islampodcasts.
President Xi Jinping said on Monday that a political settlement of the Ukraine crisis and an early ceasefire are in the best interest of all parties, and urged the international community to create conditions for direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine.Xi made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who arrived in the Chinese capital on Monday morning. "Peace mission 3.0" is how Orban captioned a picture posted on social media platform X soon after his arrival in Beijing.Orban's visit to the Chinese capital comes on the heels of his trips last week to Moscow and Kyiv, where he proposed that Ukraine consider agreeing to an immediate cease-fire with Russia.During the meeting in Beijing, the two leaders engaged in in-depth discussions on the Ukraine crisis. Orban briefed Xi about his recent visits to Russia and Ukraine. Xi commended him for his efforts to promote a political resolution of the Ukraine crisis and outlined China's views and propositions on the matter.Xi said that priority should be given to adhering to the "three principles of no spillover from the battlefield, no escalation of fighting and no adding fuel to the fire by relevant parties", in order to quickly cool down the situation. He underlined the need for the international community to provide assistance for direct dialogue and negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. Only when all major powers exert "positive rather than negative influence" can a ceasefire occur, he said.Xi said that China has been actively facilitating peace talks in its own way, encouraging and supporting all efforts conducive to a peaceful resolution of the crisis. Noting that the basic principles and efforts of China and Hungary are aligned, he said that China is willing to continue its communication with Hungary and relevant parties. On Wednesday, Xi reiterated China's position on the Ukraine crisis during his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Astana, Kazakhstan. He said that China is willing to continue making positive efforts to promote a political settlement of the crisis.Following his meeting with Xi, Orban posted on X that China is a "key power" in creating the conditions for peace in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. "This is why I came to meet with President Xi in Beijing, just two months after his official visit to Budapest," Orban wrote.Hungary assumed the rotating presidency of the European Union at the start of July.During his meeting with Orban on Monday, Xi expressed the hope that Hungary would play an active role in promoting the healthy and stable development of China-EU relations and in achieving positive interactions between them.Xi also emphasized that there is no geopolitical wrangling or conflict of fundamental interests between China and the EU.China-EU relations are of strategic significance and global influence and should be kept stable and healthy, he said, adding that both sides should work together to address global challenges. He emphasized the need for both sides to uphold partnership, continue to promote two-way opening-up and strengthen international cooperation, in order to contribute to promoting global peace, stability, development and prosperity. On bilateral relations, Xi said that China will further comprehensively deepen reform, promote high-quality development and advance high-level opening-up, which will provide new opportunities for and inject new impetus into China-Hungary cooperation. He called for maintaining high-level exchanges between the two countries, deepening political mutual trust, and enhancing strategic communication and coordination. Both countries should continue to firmly support each other, strengthen practical cooperation in various fields, and actively participate in the high-quality development of the Belt and Road Initiative, Xi said.Recalling Xi's state visit to Hungary in May, Orban said his country advocates strengthening cooperation with China, and opposes forming "small circles" and stoking bloc confrontation.Hungary is willing to take the opportunity of its rotating presidency of the EU to actively promote the sound development of EU-China relations, he said.Orban noted that China wants world peace and has put forward a series of important, constructive initiatives amid a turbulent international situation.China has used practical actions to demonstrate its ability as an important stabilizer in promoting world peace, Orban said. Hungary highly appreciates and values China's role and influence in global affairs, and is willing to closely maintain strategic communication and cooperation with China, he added.Reporter: Cao Desheng

Daily attacks by the Russian military in Ukraine have damaged dozens of towns and villages in the south and east of the country but also in central areas - including the city of Dnipro, which was shelled again early this Friday, UN humanitarians said.An array of military hardware has been deployed against heavily populated areas, such as drones and a new, frightening threat: relatively inexpensive glide bombs that can fly up to 80 kilometres and cause heavy damage. The effect has been to reduce the ability of humanitarians to reach vulnerable communities who are unable or unwilling to leave their homes, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).The UN agency says that 80 per cent of energy infrastructure in Ukraine's second city, Kharkiv, has now been damaged and that 14,000 people have been forced to evacuate from frontline areas and border communities in the east in just the last week. With more on the worrying situation, here's IOM Eastern Area Coordinator Leila Saleiravesh , speaking to UN News's Daniel Johnson just after a fresh attack on the city in Dnipro, where she and her team are based.

Emerging as a powerful figurehead for a possible 2024 presidential run, our former and 45th President, Donald Trump, demonstrated his unyielding resolve to rectify the ongoing conflicts in Israel and Ukraine swiftly after his potential reelection. This resolve was voiced in a triumphant proclamation, after he triumphed decisively in the Iowa caucuses, earning the votes of a whopping 20 delegates. Trump delivered a powerful critique of current President Joe Biden, describing him as the 'least effective president' our nation has witnessed. He firmly stated that had he continued his presidency, conflicts involving Russia and Ukraine, as well as Israel, wouldn't have seen the light of day. Labeling the Ukrainian and Israeli situations as exceedingly unfortunate, he questioned the series of events that led up to such a state of affairs. However, his determination remained unmoved. 'We are on the path to devise solutions; to instigate swift and decisive actions,' the former president confidently declared. Dealing a masterful stroke on this particular Monday, Trump succeeded in etching his name into the annals of political history. He became the inaugural Republican or Democrat presidential candidate to seize victory in the Iowa caucuses, securing the majority of the votes, even in freezing conditions. The last occasion when a candidate nearly managed such a feat was during the 1984 Democrat caucus, with Walter F. Mondale capturing 49 percent of the votes. The triumphant outcome in Iowa was painstakingly validated through the live televised hand-counting of paper ballots. Upon tallying all caucus participants, the results revealed Donald Trump standing victorious with 51 percent of the votes and a significant delegation of 16 members. Hence, the voice of the people echoed through the chilly Iowa night. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

NATO Kosovo conflict resembles pre-2022 Ukraine crisis The Duran: Episode 1605
As we pass the anniversary of Russia invading Ukraine, we are revisiting this special Ukraine emergency episode on the True Fiction Project Podcast. I spoke with Yuriy, a journalist on the ground in Kyiv who had taken up arms to fight for the freedom of his country. Yuriy recalled waking up to the early morning attacks in Kyiv and he shared how this unwarranted conflict has affected his family and the civilians of Ukraine. He spoke to the heroic and sacrificial patriotism of his fellow Ukrainians. Yuriy's main concern was to appeal to Western allies to take to the streets in an effort to help convince NATO to help Ukraine by establishing a no fly zone. Later in the episode, we hear two fictional stories that give us a glimpse into the sobering realities that the people of Ukraine are still facing today. IN THIS EPISODE: [01:59] Yuriy recalls the morning when the Russians first attacked Kyiv [05:36] Ukrainian neighbors become family as they fight for their freedom [08:40] Yuriy shares about the location and safety of his family and pleads for Western allies to help stop the destruction of Ukraine [14:00] Yuriy talks about his wartime duties, helping foreign journalists [15:57] An appeal for a no fly zone to be issued for Ukraine and Yuriy's concern for Ukrainians and all of the people of the free world [19:28] Fiction Story #1: Mornings in the Kyiv Metro was written and voiced by Parker James [24:02] Fiction Story #2: Dearest Papa story was written by Anjalika Sharma and voiced by her daughter, Anika KEY TAKEAWAYS: Yuriy makes a strong plea for Ukrainian allies to do everything in their power to demand that NATO help establish a no fly zone and protect Ukrainian civilians. From Yuriy's perspective, Russia's attack is not a war against only Ukraine. If Russia's agenda is not halted it may impact free people all over the world. Free speech may be another casualty of the Russia Ukraine situation as President Vladimir Putin is taking extreme steps to control what the Russian public knows about the invasion of Ukraine. He has signed a law that imposes stiff sentences on journalists who air what he deems to be false information. In “Mornings in the Kyiv Metro,” we see the loss, confusion, and hardship of Russia's attacks through a child's eyes. In “Dearest Papa,” a father and daughter are separated by the Ukrainian war with only memories and letters to comfort them.
