Ashleigh Flynn is a long time Portland musician who was primarily a solo artist for much of her career. But that all changed in 2015 when a friend introduced her to Nancy Luca, who had an all-female cover band. She and Luca hit it off and drew other women into a new all-female band: Ashleigh Flynn & The Riveters, an homage to Rosie the Riveter, the WWII-era icon of female power and can-do spirit. The band is celebrating 10 years of making Americana music that embraces joy and creativity as a facet of resistance with a new album called "Good Morning Sunshine,” which drops this week. The band will play a record release concert at Mississippi Studios in Portland on Saturday, April 5, before they hit the road on tour. Flynn joins us in studio with Luca and other members of the band to play a few songs and give us a sneak peek of the album.

When you think of women working with rivet guns, you might picture a woman with her hair wrapped up in a red polka-dot bandana, flexed muscles and the famous words, “We Can Do It.” Just as Rosie the Riveter inspired countless women to take on roles in industries traditionally dominated by men during World War II, Habitat for Aviation aims to ignite the same spirit of courage and innovation in women aspiring to enter the aviation field.“We really take a lot of inspiration from our World War II Rosie the Riveters, who stepped into these factories when the men went off to war,” says Habitat for Aviation's founder Beth White. The group's multi-generational, all-women team of “Modern Rosie's” are currently building a Rans S-21 airplane. Beth's journey into aviation began with a memoir that sparked her curiosity and inspired her to take a discovery flight. In this episode, Beth reveals how an unfortunate life-changing event led her to create Habitat for Aviation, a nonprofit that's preparing the next generation of airplane mechanics, pilots, and avionics specialists. Plus, you'll hear from some of the young women participating in the airplane build. Beth provides insights into Habitat for Aviation programs and discusses resources, such as EAA's Young Eagles, which offers free discovery flights to youth. She also gives practical advice for anyone interested in getting a pilot certificate. Share this episode with your friends, family, and colleagues. They may be the future airplane mechanics, air traffic controllers, pilots, and other aviation professionals working to keep us safe. In this episode of the Work in Progress podcast, I'm joined by Brittany Greer, the executive director of Rosie Riveters, a nonprofit that is working to close the gender gap in the STEM workforce. There are an estimated 2.8 million unfilled STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) jobs in this country. Meanwhile, women make up just 28% of the STEM workforce. Since 2016, Brittany Greer has been working to change that. The nonprofit she founded aims to inspire girls aged 8 to 14 from diverse backgrounds to explore careers in the field through hands-on learning kits. "It's all of the materials needed to complete the project operationally. We do everything from explore hydraulics – making a hydraulic desk lamp where the arm goes up and down – to exploring the science of sound. To build a harmonica, we have popsicle sticks and rubber bands and straws and if you put those together in the right way, you can make a harmonica that vibrates and make sounds," explains Greer. She says that part of the lesson of each Rosie Riveters learning kit is to understand how that science project connects to a career in STEM. For example, the connection between the science of sound to a career in the audio-visual industry. She adds, "The whole goal of our programs is not only excitement and awareness of the opportunities that are available in STEM, that's one part of it. The real core of what we do is providing girls in our programs with an opportunity for productive struggle, a space to get things wrong before they get them rights." As a result, the young girls not only build critical thinking and problem-solving skills, they build their confidence. "It's watching a kid go from, 'I can't,' to, 'Look what I did.' Because once you get through the struggle and you have completed the task and you did something that you didn't think was possible or you didn't think was fair, there is a radiance that comes off of a participant after that moment and they're excited to show you and talk about it," explains Greer. Greer believes that building those skills and building confidence is what drives more young girls to consider STEM as a career. "If you can invest in them early, they will know that they can come and find you at the end. You're going to have a far greater participation rate of of people who have not gone to participate in your space before because you're welcoming them and you're inviting them, and you're showing them the opportunities that are available to them. "I think the more that we can do that, the more that we can open up opportunities that haven't previously been available to a lot of the population," Greer adds. Listen to the podcast here, or wherever you get your podcasts, to learn more about how Rosie Riveters gets the kits into the hands of the girls they are hoping to inspire. My guest today on the Online for Authors podcast is Meredith Ritchie, author of the book Poster Girls. Her historical fiction novel takes place in North Carolina during WWII, and is based on the true but forgotten events that happened in her hometown. When her triplets left for college, she wrote Poster Girls as a cure for acute empty nest syndrome. She now lives in Charlotte with her husband, two cats, four chickens and grown adults that occasionally return to her cozy coop. Poster Girls was named 2022 "Best of the Nest" for fiction by QC Nerve magazine and was recently named as part of the 2024 North Carolina Reads program sponsored by NC Humanities, a division of the Library of Congress. A lifelong learner, Meredith believes history told in the form of stories can never be forgotten, especially history that happened in our own backyard. In my book review, I stated that Meredith tells a delightful story about a group of "Rosie the Riveters" working in a bullet factory in Charlotte, NC during WWII. The story comes from two points of view - Maggie and Cora. Both women are married to soldiers, have moved to Charlotte from other areas, and love books - enough to start a friendship. However, others aren't quite as keen to see this relationship, since Maggie is a white woman of privilege and Cora is a poor, black woman. These two women are strong and fight for themselves and for one another. I enjoy how Meredith shows how, despite her good intentions, Maggie often 'gets it wrong.' I also love how she shows that Cora, who interprets life through a lens of racism, also gets it wrong. Most importantly, I love how the two characters persevere despite it all. If you love a good historical fiction, especially one that makes you think about issues we face today, then, this is the book for you. Sacramento study recommends ways to improve the city's entertainment economy. Also, Sacramento Jewish leaders discuss how they are observing Hanukkah amid ongoing war. Finally, the author of “Poster Girl” and the story of WWII women welders. Improving Sacramento's Entertainment Economy Last year, Sacramento created a new position to build the city's nighttime economy so that entertainment venues, restaurants, bars and other businesses can thrive after hours. Tina Lee-Vogt became the city's first Nighttime Economy Manager in October 2022. In the year-plus since leading the new Office of Nighttime Economy, Tina has been canvassing downtown and midtown Sacramento listening to what's needed, the city's strengths, and the challenges to creating a vibrant entertainment economy. Tina returns to Insight with what she learned from a Sociable City Assessment and Music Economy Census conducted this year, as well as the changes that could happen in 2024. How Sacramento is Observing Hanukkah Today marks two months since the attack on Israel by Hamas. Today is also the start of Hanukkah. Rabbi Mona Alfi, from Sacramento's Congregation B'nai Israel and Rabbi Yossi Grossbaum, from the Chabad Jewish Community Center, join Insight to discuss how their congregations are celebrating the holiday while their hearts and minds are on the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas. We will also understand what conversations are taking place within their communities during a rise in antisemitism. “Poster Girl” and the Story of WWII Women Welders During World War II millions of women took up jobs on production lines and in the defense industry to fulfill wartime orders for aircraft, munitions, and ships. These “Rosie the Riveters” and “Wendy the Welders” broke down barriers, and became symbols of inspiration and empowerment. On the 82nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor, we speak with historical novelist Shelley Blanton-Stroud about her newly-released book “Poster Girl,” which captures the experiences - and hardships - faced by these female patriots.

Narrated by actress Jane Lynch. The individual stories of more than two dozen women caught up in World War II, from the American Home Front to Auschwitz Concentration Camp in Poland. Included in this hour-long film are also the personal stories of the incredible women who served in uniform in the military or were “Rosie the Riveters” at home building the tools of war, whether they were black or white. This documentary focuses on the role of women in history's most violent conflict, from the perspective of those who served, witnessed or were caught up in a war that proved women were the equal of men when it came to patriotism, service or in some cases, self-preservation during watershed moments which called for steadfastness.
Hear about different aspects of women's lives in World War Two through five new fictional books recommended by Cheryl McKeon of the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza. "The Enemy at Home: A Thrilling Historical Suspense Novel" (Kevin O'Brien, 2023), set in Seattle, has a serial killer targeting Rosie the Riveters. "Good Night Irene: A Novel" (Luis Alberto Urrea, 2023) is based on the author's mother's true experiences as a "Doughnut Dolly" on the war front, which combines war descriptions with "laugh out loud funny" tales of female friendship. "The First Ladies" (Marie Benedict & Victoria Christopher Murray, 2023) tells of the friendship between Eleanor Rosevelt and Mary McLeod Bethune, the "first lady of the civil rights movement." "Flatlands" (Sue Hubbard, 2023) and "The Secret Book of Flora Lea" (Patti Callahan Henry, 2023) each explore the experiences of grown British "Pied Piper children" who were sent from urban areas to rural foster homes for safety. And for a break from war, check out "The Book of (More) Delights" (Ross Gay, 2023). For more information, visit www.bhny.com. Produced by Brea Barthel for Hudson Mohawk Magazine.

Marina Metevelis answered the call to defend the United States as one of the iconic bandanna-clad Rosie the Riveters.Marina was sixteen when Pearl Harbor was bombed in 1941—an event that inspired her to apply for a job at the Wichita aircraft plant where the B-17 Flying Fortresses met the wings that carried them into battle.
