What does a music "magazine" need to be in 2023? Sean Adams, of Drowned in Sound, on building a modern music publication

Music Ally Focus Ep. 93: What does a music publication need to be in 2023? We talk a lot on the podcast about marketing from the artist-side: getting projects to launch and connecting to as many people as possible. But what about the point after that - when music fans debate and discuss music – and explore and discover music they don't know that they don't know? Sean Adams, of Drowned in Sound, explains how he's going to build a modern music publication. Drowned in Sound was one of the UK's earliest music blogs back in 2000, and it then became one of the UK's leading music publications, growing into a successful record label, an early podcast, and also live shows on the way. Having “paused” Drowned in Sound for a few years, Adams is bringing the publication back - but in a format that connects with the needs of music fans in a 2023 environment. So what is the mix of content, platforms, and community that music fans need now if they want a jumping-off point that is more contextual and community-driven than a playlist? Sean explains his plans. Before he started working for Tower Records Watt Avenue in 1975, today's guest Mike Farrace had already run a Sacramento music magazine called “Rock & Roll News”. Following three years working at Tower Records Watt Avenue under Store Manager Mike Koontz, Farrace started working for Tower Advertising. Mike tells us all about his time as Northwest Advertising Ad Manager, chasing down labels and blank tape companies for advertising dollars. Yet the whole time he was in Advertising, Farrace was thinking about starting up a Music Magazine that would be a Tower in house exclusive. Spending a year submitting proposals to John Schairer, he was finally told by Carla Henson “Mike, he's just throwing those [proposals] in the trash.” Next, Mike Farrace went straight to Russ Solomon and within 20 minutes at lunch, they were plotting out what would eventually become PULSE! Magazine, an independent publication that reflected Tower Records, its customers and the music it sold in the best possible way. The first 3 issues were put together by Farrace himself and over the course of 222 issues it eventually built up an impressive in house staff. When PULSE! started it was the old fashioned paste up method of putting a magazine together. It wasn't for several years until PULSE! got into computer graphics typesetting/publishing. But that simple, convenient move got Mike Farrace thinking and reading about a digital future. This led to Tower having its first database store online which led to Tower selling music on the internet. Mike also tells us about the only time an artist got pissed at PULSE!, and how it was all Mike's fault. Later in our discussion Mike recalls seeing the end coming for Tower and how things ended for PULSE! and himself in 2002.

"A lot more love and care goes into it because it's in print..." Tom Preece is one of the founding editors of Yuck, the Manchester-based music magazine that released its fifth issue this summer. Publishing a music magazine is tough when nobody is allowed to go out and listen to live music, but now life is opening up more here in the UK and I was excited to hear how that's changing the scope of what Yuck can do, including planning for their first live event next month, and increasing the size and ambition of the magazine itself.

Thank you Jim Dudukovich! In this episode we talk about cool bands and stories, like how our guest sat in on drums with the Circle Jerks in New York because Chuck Biscuits, the drummer, wasn't able to play and our guest knew all their songs.Jack Rabid is the publisher and creative genius behind "The Big Takeover," a bi-annual music magazine published out of New York City, going on 42 years now.  It reads like a music encyclopedia or mix tape guidebook, including 60-80 pages of album reviews written by Jack himself.  Jack's a drummer and vocalist and has played in a number of bands.  And he's a veteran of the “punk era,” emanating from New York City.  But mostly, he's a music lover.  This interview kicks right in, mid conversation, with us talking about Jack's softball game that he just got home from.  I ended up just hitting record, 86'ing the formalities of a “hello,” and rolling tape.  No one talks about music like Jack Rabid.  Here we go…======================== BAND REFERENCES IN THIS EPISODE! ======================== Talking Heads, XTC, Ramones, Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, Tony Bennett, Sinatra, Xavier Cugat, Death Cab for Cutie, Deep Sea Diver, Wire, Springhouse (Jack's band), Leaving Trains (Jack played with them), Chills, Nirvana, Belly, Velocity Girl, Throwing Muses, REM, Even Worse (Jack's Band), Last Burning Embers (Jack's Band), Beatles, Circle Jerks, Legal Weapon, Saccharin Trust, Naked Ray Gun, Big Black, The Effigies, Blood Sport, Fastbacks, Hüsker Dü, The Screamers, The Dells, Engelbert Humperdinck, Glen Campbell, Dionne Warwick, Jimi Hendrix, Blondie, Television, Strawberry Alarm Clock, Velvet Underground, Mothers of Invention, MC5, The Cars, The Police, Bad Brains, Henry Rollins, Ian MacKaye, James Brown, The Who, Jerry Lee Lewis, The Killers, Otis Redding, Sam and Dave, The Undertones, X, The Mutants, The Zeros, DOA, The Subhumans, The Dead Kennedys, The Stimulators, Mad, Iggy Pop, the Cramps, Link Wray, Professor Longhair, The Ruts, Sham 69, The Damned, Dead Boys, Buzzcocks, Justin Sullivan, New Model Army, The Neats, Wipers, Catherine Wheel, Radiohead, Louis Armstrong, Jimmy Rogers, Gene Autry, Max Romeo, Stooges, Heartbreakers, New York Dolls, The Adverts, The Everly Brothers, Love, Carl Perkins, Oscar Peterson, Hank Williams, Stephen Foster, Blasters, The Undertones, Screamin' Jay Hawkins, Howlin' Wolf, Joy Formidable, David Bowie, Brian Eno, Iggy Pop, Lou Reed, Cheetah Chrome, John Lydon, Captain Beefheart, Ruts DC, The Gas, Joe Pernice, Bevis Frond, The Who, The Byrds, Bo Diddley, Ike and Tina Turner, Lesley Gore, Marvin Gaye, Ray Charles, Fats Domino, Billy Bragg, Colin Hay, Connie Smith, and George Jones.========================THE BIG TAKEOVER- Website:  https://bigtakeover.com/- Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/BigTakeover/ - Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/bigtakeovermag/?hl=en- Radio Show:  https://bigtakeover.com/radio/ ========================BRENTON HUND PODCAST   - Facebook:  http://www.facebook.com/brentonhundpodcast- Instagram:  https://www.instagram.com/brentonhundpodcast/- YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/========================SOCIAL MEDIA BY:  https://www.socialsweetheart.coLOGO DESIGN BY: https://taylorhembree1993.wixsite.com/ohokmedia

Becoming a music journalist isn’t for the faint-hearted. And running your own online magazine is 100 times the effort. Starting your own magazine is a rewarding way to get into dance culture, especially if DJing isn’t your bag. But there’s a myriad of things that could go wrong when starting your own online magazine. That’s even if you can get the thing started in the first place. Web design, writing, graphics, newsletters… The list goes on. These are all things you need to think about if you want to run a successful online magazine. Our guest on this show is Mike Tomlinson, the founder and head of Zone Focus. An online magazine that aims to shine a light on underground music in the North West and beyond. Mike shares the Zone Focus journey, offers some tips for others looking to start their own magazine, and he shares the reasons why he’s adding a record label into the mix. Are you thinking about building an online brand but don’t know where to start? This show is for you. Maybe you’d like to get into music journalism and want to hear some stories from someone who’s seen it all, check out the podcast. Or, maybe you’d just like some insights into the club scene in the North West. We got you covered.

On this episode I chat with Gaynor about her business and we find out more about the world of virtual assistants.  Gaynor has a wealth of knowledge and is happy to help and assist those wanting to become part of this lucrative industry.   ABOUT GAYNOR: Who is the person behind Typewrite Transcription and Typing Services CC? I was born on the 21st of March 1975 in Kensington, South Africa, and, with the exception of a few years after I was married in 1996, I’ve lived here my whole life. I went to school at Leicester Road Primary School and Jeppe Girls High where I matriculated in 1992 with a university exemption and half colours for chess (I was the captain of the chess team and was on the tennis team too). After studying graphic design for a year, I decided it wasn’t for me and did a secretarial diploma at the then Germiston Technical College (in which I obtained a distinction in Information Processing, a fancy name for typing). I always had an entrepreneurial flair. During school I sold artwork through advertising in the Top 40 Music Magazine, for R5 a piece! (Lots of drawings of Michael Jackson were done at the time!) I also worked part time in the local Checkers.   https://typewritetranscription.co.za/ https://wattsinvolved.co.za/
