Send us a textRev. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that "Riots are the language of the unheard" and in April of 1992, the black community in Los Angeles felt very unheard. The Previous year in 1991, 25 year old Rodney Glen King had been involved in a high speed chase. Noticing the spot light from a helicopter, Rodney realized that things had quickly gotten out of hand and, ended up pulling off Interstate 201, onto the right hand shoulder of Foothill Blvd. What followed was caught on video, by a nearby resident named George Holliday..... and the world would see one of the most horrific beatings, that did not result in death. By some miracle, Rodney was not killed, but doctors would say that some of his bones had been so pulverized that the looked like grains of sand...13 days after this, a 15 year old black girl named Latasha Harlins, at the request of her grandmother, had gone into a corner store to pick up some orange juice for her and her siblings, Latasha walked walked to the front counter with $2 in hand to pay for the 1.79 orange juice, again, this interaction was caught on film, the store owner seemed to have believed Latasha was going to steal the juice, despite the cash in her hand, after a short but intense interaction with the store owner, Latasha tried to walk away. The store owner would pull out her gun, and end the life of a 15 year old child. When Latasha's killer got off, with community service and a fine, the black community was horrified, and when the 4 officers who beat Rodney, nearly to death, were acquitted, they had had enough, and with in minutes the riots would begin. They would last for 6 days, leaving some neighbourhood, reduced to rubble. This is the case of the 1992 LA Riots.Support the showIf you're interested in receiving bonus episodes, early release dates, an everything scary sticker and ‘thank you' as well as a shout out on our regular feed! Today, we are extremely excited to have on John Ganz, author of the new book When the Clock Broke, a retelling of the 1990s that touches on politics, music, television, and the history of right wing cranks who ultimately would become a prelude for Trumpism. There's a ton that we discuss: The LA riots, Pat Buchanan, Murray Rothbard, Sister Souljah, and much more. If you're interested in how the fringe elements of the 1990s became much less fringe by 2016, this is a wonderfully written and engaging history that not only feels relevant and prescient, but also funny and alive. NORTON WEEK continues!  This is of course referring to the legendary actor Edward Norton who broke out big-time with his first ever on-screen appearance in the '96 legal thriller Primal Fear which garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor.  Two years later in '98, he delivered two VERY memorable performances in two VERY different movies which both left their marks on any one frequenting the cinema for years to come - these two seminal films came out just about a month apart and they would make a truly BIZARRE double feature. :) Tony Kaye (mostly before Norton took over during post, as has been reported since its release) directed a very searing portrait of two brothers Daniel and Derek Vinyard who have immersed themselves in hate and bigotry.  The older brother Derek is played by Norton in a performance which earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor - he becomes the leader for a Neo-Nazi gang and is eventually sent to prison after committing a brutal murder in front of their home.  His younger brother Daniel is played by Edward Furlong who eventually joins this gang after his brother is incarcerated.  The story follows the struggles of both brothers along with their mother played by Beverly D'angelo.  Other co-stars include Fairuza Balk, Elliott Gould, Stacy Keach, Ethan Suplee, Guy Torry, and Avery Brooks.WARNING: There are some racial epithets spoken by characters in this movie contained within clips from the movie included in this podcast.Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon  https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Dan Lindsay and his partner, TJ Martin have made some of the best documentary films in the last decade. The first film they made together, 2011's Undefeated, won them an Oscar and tells the story of a high school football coach in Memphis trying to keep his team together despite incredible adversity. On the show Dan talks about the pressures of winning an Academy Award at such an early stage of your career and he also discusses their next films which have met and exceeded expectations. LA92 is a wildly original film that chronicles the 1992 LA Riots using only archival material. The team followed up that film with Tina, the story of Pop Icon Tina Turner. Both of these films won Dan and TJ Emmy Awards. On the show we talk about how he and TJ work together as a partnership, the highs and lows they've experienced in their careers and we talk extensively about how Dan approaches storytelling, filmmaking and maintaining a career and work life that allows him to make the kinds of films he wants to make. He is the author of First Strike: Prison and Educational Enclosures in Black Los Angeles and Joy and Pain: A Story of Black Life and Liberation in Five Albums. For this episode we invite Dr. Sojoyner to the podcast to discuss his latest work Against the Carceral Archive: The Art of Black Liberatory Practice which offers a distillation of critical, theoretical, and Black organizing and activist work over the past three decades. Working from collections at the Southern California Library the book examines the study and practice of the LA chapter of the Black Panther Party,  the Coalition Against Police Abuse, Urban Policy Research Institute, Mothers Reclaiming Our Children, and the collection of geographer Clyde Woods.  We ask Sojoyner about how he thinks about carcerality and the archive in relation to domestic warfare, and discuss the collections and documents he examines in the book and what they reveal about the practices of organizations grounded in the struggle for Black Liberation in Los Angeles.  Against the Carceral Archive is a great text to come to grips with the level of rigorous study, analysis and dedication that are required for effective organizing agains  t the forces of racial capitalism and the imperialist state. Thank you to Dr. Sojoyner for this book and for joining us for this conversation. We'll include links to the Southern California Library which provided collections for Sojoyner's research here and continues to be an amazing resource for people in struggle in Los Angeles. And if you appreciate the work that we do, we strongly encourage you to become a patron of the show, you can so for as little as $1 a month and all of your support adds up to make this show - and our own study groups - possible on a weekly basis.  Links: Southern California Library Pick-up a copy of Against the Carceral Archive: The Art of Black Liberatory Practice

Meet Al Bowman. He started out working in the LA Music Scene owning, and driving limos for such superstars as Whitney Houston, who introduced him into the world of celebrity seat filling. That provided an introduction to such luminaries as Patti LaBelle, Tommy Lee from Motley Crue, The Beach Boys Brian Wilson, and even silver screen star Martha Ray. Through a chain of events, including the 1992 LA Riots, and the emerging grunge rock scene in Hollywood, his focus changed from driving stars, to creating awards shows for stars to walk the red carpet. Enter Bill Gazzarri (“The Godfather of Rock” and the owner of the legendary Sunset Strip rock club "Gazzarri's"), and The honorary mayor of Hollywood Johnny Grant, who became mentors and the inspiration for Al Bowman to begin producing music awards shows in Los Angeles for the independent artist, with the same flair, and fanfare as the big shows provided. Bowman's awards shows included: The Los Angeles Music Awards, Hollywood Fame Awards, Phoenix Music Awards, Producer Choice Honors, and the Las Vegas Fame Awards. Al has now created The Nashville Music Awards, along with creating a non-profit organization called “The Nashville Music Foundation”, providing something to the independent creative community. Al's goal is to inspire the future of music by honoring the past. Bowman explains how a simple act as walking the red carpet at special events, can assist in elevating your exposure on a national, and Global level. Hope everyone is having a great holiday season so far and that you are ready for one hell of an interview. It is my honor to have legendary DJ/Producer LA Riots on for his 1st SITB! Daniel and I caught up last week and had an amazing conversation that I'm really excited to share with you. In 217 we discussed: Journey Into Music: Daniel has been around the world and has a very unique life story. He was born in New Zealand but grew up in North Carolina and always loved music. He fell in love with drum n bass and started pursuing a career as a DJ. He eventually made his way out to LA where he spent a bulk of his life. LA Riots was born in the early 2000's and since then he's grown to become a household name in electronic music. Discography: Throughout the interview, we touched on the evolution of his sound and how many different foundational influences still play a huge part in his current style. LA Riots has put out music on some of the world's most recognized labels like Dim Mak, Musical Freedom, Realm, Spinnin' and Hood Politics - just to name a few. We got the backstory on tracks like "House Philosophy", "I Call That Love", and "I Promise You" which was sooo much fun to hear. Amazing producer Life nowadays: Daniel moved to Bali last year and has taken a different approach to life and music - his only goal is to be happy. He spends most of his days surfing and is living life to the absolute fullest. He's been in the music industry for a long time and it was refreshing to hear his perspective on what really matters in and outside of this rat race. We also got the backstory on a documentary that he's been working on called "Amen Brother" which shines a light on a mixed race band called "The Winstons" whose track has been sampled by thousands of artists without ever being compensated. Cannot wait for this to come out. We've been trying to line up this interview for quite some time and I'm so glad we made it happen! Thank you so much for making the time to come on my friend and I'm looking forward to connecting with you again soon. Let's get into it right now so you can hear his full story for yourselves - this is episode 217 with LA Riots

This week marks the 30th anniversary of the 1992 Los Angeles Riots, also known as the LA Uprising. Before the uprising, tensions in South L.A. were at an all-time high from years of untamed police abuse, gang violence, and strained relations between the Black and Korean American communities. In 1991, a Black teenager named Latasha Harlins was shot and killed by Korean storekeeper Soon Ja Du after she accused Harlins of stealing a bottle of juice. Around the same time, the Black community was also stunned by the video of four white police officers brutally beating Rodney King. A year later, on April 29, 1992, all four officers were acquitted and the Black community of South Los Angeles reached its breaking point. The acquittal set off five days of violence, destruction, and looting, with Koreatown being the main target. Now, 30 years later, several Black and Korean communities are commemorating the anniversary of the riots by reflecting on the past, and moving forward together. This week on Into America, Trymaine Lee speaks with Rodney King's daughter, Lora King, about her relationship with her father and how she's continuing his legacy through the Rodney King Foundation. For a transcript, please visit msnbc.com/intoamerica. Follow and share the show on Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram, using the handle @intoamericapod.Thoughts?
