She reveals that Hive was inspired by a ballet that she's collaborating on with her partner, the writer Peter Thomson, who shares her fascination with queen bees. Anna talks to Sally and Peter on a visit to a local beehive and then joins Sally during the first rehearsal with harpist Catrin Finch, who explains why the harp is perfect for capturing the sound of a beehive. Anna captures the buzz as the piece is rehearsed with the BBC National Orchestra Of Wales, and finally, the hive of activity that is the world premiere at The Royal Albert Hall. My guest in this episode is the world-class musician, griot (praise singer), composer, djembe master, virtuoso and pioneer - Seckou Keita - he's a rarity, seated in tradition whilst constantly pushing the boundaries of his art. A true master of the kora - a 22 stringed West African harp - Seckou, from Southern Senegal, was a childhood prodigy, born of a line of griots and kings. Seckou has graced the international stage since 1996, earning worldwide acclaim for his kora playing and appearing with a host of fellow artists including Paul Weller, Salif Keita, Damon Alban, Youssou N'Dour, Miriam Makeba and Neil Finn. It was whilst performing as part of the Africa Express Presents The Orchestra of Syrian Musicians in 2016, that he met Paul for the first time - playing a sensational version of Wild Wood as part of the concerts. In 2019, he won 'Musician of the Year' at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards - whilst also picking up the award for 'Best Duo/Band' with Catrin Finch. November 2020 saw the release of the On Sunset Remixes EP - with Seckou's beautiful remix of Rockets featuring as one of the 5 tracks. Film critic Jason Solomons brings a touch of glamour to tonight's proceedings with his report from this year's Cannes Film festival which opened this week. Tove Jansson was the Finnish creator of the Moomins, stories much loved by children (and adults) the world over. A new film, Tove, tells the story of her extraordinary life in post-war Helsinki, the ambivalence she felt towards the success of the Moomins, and how her ideas about freedom were challenged when she fell in love with theatre director Vivica Bandler. The film's director, Zaida Bergroth, talks about the choices she made in telling the story of this iconic author and artist. Welsh culture that is ancient, and modern: Catrin Finch, commissioned by the Llangollen Eisteddfod, plays the harp and is working with a choir - but not just male voices, a choir of singing refugees and asylum seekers. A beat boxer is involved, too. Meanwhile the artist Luke Jerram has turned to another Welsh tradition, throwing a huge, beautiful patchwork quilt over the town bridge. Presenter: John Wilson Producer: Harry Parker

Indie popsters The Lightning Seeds, Welsh harpist Catrin Finch, Irish folk duo Ye Vagabonds and yoga-to-music teacher Grace Johnson are our guests in this latest episode. Ian Broudie of The Lightning Seeds describes how it’s easier to write a miserable song than a happy one; Catrin Finch explains why she finds collaborations with non-classical artists so liberating; Brian Mac Gloin of Ye Vagabonds has a theory on the resurgence of stripped-back Irish music; and we unroll our mats to do some stretching with Grace Johnson who is teaching yoga… to live music. *Backstage is a regular podcast where we go behind the scenes for exclusive interviews and insights from leading and emerging artists who’ll be taking to the stage at Sage Gateshead, and discover some of the activities that take place, and the communities that meet there.

The continuing investigation into how a senior Nazi evaded justice. Producer: Gemma Newby Sound design: Neil Churchill Research: James Everest and Lea Main-Klingst Original music by Catrin Finch and Sekou Keita
The war is over and Otto Wachter has disappeared. Whilst his friends are committing suicide or being tried for mass murder Otto has escaped high into the mountains with the help of a young SS soldier. Meanwhile his wife Charlotte is working on getting him out of Austria. Barrister and author Philippe Sands continues his investigation into how a leading Nazi evaded justice. Producer: Gemma Newby Sound design: Neil Churchill Research: James Everest and Lea Main-Klingst Original music by Catrin Finch and Sekou Keita Otto Wachter: Stephen Fry Charlotte Wachter: Laura Linney Other parts by members of the BBC Radio Drama Company

Philippe Sands interviews two Nazi hunters from the US Department of Justice to go through the evidence against Otto. Meanwhile Otto's son Horst continues to maintain his father's innocence. Producer: Gemma Newby Sound design: Neil Churchill Research: James Everest and Lea Main-Klingst Original music by Catrin Finch and Sekou Keita Otto Wachter: Stephen Fry Charlotte Wachter: Laura Linney Other parts by members of the BBC Radio Drama Company
Philippe Sands investigates the mysterious disappearance of senior Nazi Otto Wachter, who was indicted for mass murder. Philippe begins by travelling to a castle outside Vienna to meet an old man who believes his father was murdered, while a voice from the past offers up clues to how it might have happened.Producer: Gemma Newby Sound design: Neil Churchill Research: James Everest and Lea Main-Klingst Original music by Catrin Finch and Sekou Keita

Alexis Normand from Saskatoon feminist vocal group Rosie and the Riveters joins us on Episode 372 of Folk Roots Radio to chat about their great new album "Ms. Behave". Named after the World War 2 feminist labour icon, Rosie the Riveter - the band are a study in contrasts – three voices, the bright red lipstick, the curls, the post war dress, vintage harmonies and a sassy choreographed stage show - coupled with songs that whether playful or serious are deliberately intended to provoke, empower and inspire. It’s a great interview - well worth sticking around for. And, as always, we also check out more of the latest new releases including new music from Chris LaVancher, Joe Jencks, John McCutcheon, Catrin Finch & Seckou Keita, David Leask, Scott Anthony Andrews and Tom Rush.

Ballet Cymru have perhaps one of the most inspiring stories of grit and perseverance in the entire landscape of Welsh arts, if not in the whole of the UK. Over thirty years old, run for much of that time as a passion project by founder Darius James and a very small band of itinerant artists, in the last couple of years they have made a new home for themselves in a very impressive studio building on the outskirts of Newport. They have now a national reputation, and it’s one for subverting expectations, of being rooted in, perhaps surprisingly, a working-class ethic. They now have a strong CV of innovative work, eye-catching collaborations with the likes of Cerys Matthews, Georgia Ruth and Catrin Finch, and guest choreographers, not least Tim Podesta who is about to unveil his Shadow Aspect starring principle dancer of the Royal Ballet Mara Galeazzi. Gary Raymond met with Darius James and his Assistant Artistic Director and partner Amy Doughty to talk about Shadow Aspect, about the history of Ballet Cymru, that amazing journey, and about all of the amazing ways they give things back to the community.
Work for harp by Salzedo performed by Catrin Finch, harp on April 14, 2001 and work for violin and piano by Ravel performed by Benjamin Beilman, violin and Alessio Bax, piano on May 17, 2015.Salzedo: BalladeRavel: Sonata for Violin and Piano (1923)Harpist and educator Carlos Salzedo was born in France and trained at the Paris Conservatoire in piano at the age of nine, before taking up the harp and returning to the Conservatoire to earn a degree in that instrument as well. In 1909, knowing no English whatsoever, Salzedo emigrated to New York, where he’d been invited by Toscanini to join the Metropolitan Opera orchestra. A few years later, he wrote this piece—a virtuosic showcase for the harp, firmly rooted in the harmonic vocabulary widely employed in France at the time. Salzedo would go on to found the harp department at the Curtis Institute and teach at Juilliard, splitting his time between Europe and the States, and his influences lives on, through his pupils and his compositions. We’ll hear the piece played by harpist Catrin Finch.Next up, another Frenchman enamored of America: Ravel. His Sonata for Violin and Piano, written between 1923 and 1927, displays an interest in the uniquely American art form, jazz, which was all the rage in Paris at the time. Ravel wrote the piece before traveling to the States himself, in 1928, but the middle movement in particular (called “Blues”) was clearly inspired by the American music he’d heard performed in Europe. We’ll hear the sonata played by violinist Benjamin Beilman and pianist Alessio Bax, from Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. First, the Salzedo, performed by Catrin Finch.
