We aren’t born with an understanding of how to spend, earn, and save, so why is there so much judgement around the subject of personal finances? Desirae Odjick has made it her mission to be a supportive, welcoming, non-judgemental force through her writing on Half Banked. If you think saving for retirement has to be a restrictive practise, you’re wrong! If you think you’re “bad” at money, Des is happy to correct you! In preparation for this episode I welcomed your questions via Instagram (@laurakelly.co) to ask during my interview with Desirae, and she’s answering them here! From questions like, “the wedding is over, I’m poor, now what?!” to “how do I balance paying off my debt AND saving for retirement?” — you will love Desirae’s honest, thoughtful, and nurturing responses. “Being good at money doesn't mean you have to give up the things that you love.” - Desirae Odjick Desirae Odjick is very interested in helping you be great at money. The best part is that she breaks it down in a way we can all understand. This is sorely needed in the world of personal finance education. Desirae originally started Half Banked because she ran the numbers and it turned out that she would have to save half her income to achieve all of her savings goals. And what better accountability than publishing updates on the internet along the way? Two years later and now she's the one giving the advice - because she's been through it and learned a lot along the way. We all need a helping hand when it comes to meeting our financial goals. There's a reason why you're good at engineering, or doctoring, or dentisting, or whatever it is you do to make money. It's because you're probably not super great when it comes to personal finance. Well, Desirae is. She can afford her dog(expensive!), her new house(expensive!!) and still meets her goal of saving 10% of her income before all that stuff (like living the life you want) gets in the way. How? By paying attention. (a.k.a. budgeting and tracking) A budget is a tool for freedom, not a prison. The hard truth is: you can't have everything. At least not all at once. So if you put your priorities in a budget, you actually know if you can afford them or not. I enjoyed chatting with Desirae at FinCon 2017 in Dallas, Texas (even though we're both Canadian!). At FinCon 2017, I had the pleasure of sitting down with my three of my favourite Canadian personal finance bloggers: Desirae Odjick from Half Banked, Andrew Daniel from Family Money Plan and Bob Lai from Tawcan. This episode was recorded live on the last day of the conference, and has us chatting about their experience at the conference and what takeaways they'll be leaving with, their thoughts on blogging and everything in between.
Desirae runs the blog Half Banked, a blog by "one millennial's half-baked attempt to save HALF her income." On her website, Desirae shares her stories, experiences, and the lessons she learned as she took on this passion project. "Why do you want to create a budget? What is driving you to do this?" She started this blog so she would have a more structured way of achieving her goals. It started when Desirae decided that she wanted to buy her own house. In the beginning, she wanted to become one of the more adventurous millennials she has met - those free-spirited individuals who traveled the world and went on one adventure to another. Eventually she realized it wasn't for her. "It's all about leading with what's most important for you at a certain point." On this episode, Desirae shares how she's perfectly happy where she is now - and that situations don't always have to be "and/or." You can actually have both. One can achieve financial stability, without giving up the fun and all the good things in life. "There is no one-size-fits-all approach to finances."
Desirae Odjick, the blogger behind Half Banked, shares her personal finance journey and best money tips for saving and investing for millennials. Long description: I know I said Desirae Odjick, the blogger behind Half Banked, is like a mini-me, but I think what I really meant is she's like a sister from another mister. Once we started chatting, it's like we'd already knew each other, and it was such a treat for me to interview her after following her blog for so long. In this episode, we talk about it all. We touch on how her mom paid her to read personal finance books (which sounds like a dream, but I'm obviously a huge nerd), why she started her blog, how she's on a journey to save half her income, and how she budgets the "low tech" way with a good ol' budget spreadsheet. We also talk a bit about investing, something I think a lot of millennials are afraid to start because they're either afraid of the risk or just don't know where to start. Luckily, Desirae created a great foundational (and free) course to get anyone started on their investing journey. She also mentions that she invests with Wealthsimple, one of the leading robo-advisors in Canada, which is one route you may want to look in to. And if you sign up with Wealthsimple, you can get a $50 bonus when you sign up with them. Desirae has a number of other super helpful resources to help anyone just starting out with taking control of their money, so I've listed them all below. I've also recently made a free email course, called the Get Your Financial Life Right Challenge, that goes through all the basics of personal finance in 10 days.
