I'm joined by guest Phil Stacey as we discuss the Grateful Dead's third album, Aoxomoxoa. Show notes: - Recorded at CompCon world HQ - Aoxomoxoa was released in 1969 - A big year for rock music - Tons of legendary albums came out: Zeppelin, Who, Beatles, Neil Young, Stooges, MC5, Stones - First two Dead albums were commercial failures - Went way over budget in studio, stuck to their guns - Very experimental sound - Robert Hunter contributed lyrics to most of the album - Songs featured eccentric characters, way out lyrics - Plenty of drugs were part of the process - The old West, the devil, the rose were recurring themes - First album ever recorded using 16-track technology - Band spent $180k on the album - Jay: A lot to like about this album - "Dupree's Diamond Blues" sounds like a Kinks song - "What's Become of the Baby" is 8 minutes of weirdness that should have been left off album - When bands release unnecessary hits compilations - There was a definite '60s resurgence in the mid-80s that led to growth in popularity of the Dead at colleges - And then jam bands really caught on: Phish, Allman Brothers, Blues Traveler, Widespread Panic - Iconic Dead skull and lightning bolt logo was released in '69 - Phil: Band was very good at mobilizing fanbase - Dead merch is so unique and well-known - The confounding popularity of "Africa" - "China Cat Sunflower" is a Dead classic - Some songs evolve in concert, some don't get played at all - Aoxomoxoa sounds like the Dead - Jay: Jams can be fun, but you don't necessarily want to put them on a record - We'll listen to more live stuff vs. studio albums going forward - Next up: Live/Dead Completely Conspicuous is available through the iTunes podcast directory. Subscribe and write a review! The opening and closing theme of Completely Conspicuous is "Theme to Big F'in Pants" by Jay Breitling. Voiceover work is courtesy of James Gralian.

I don't often feature audience recordings on the Deadpod but this one is so clean and of such a great show that I decided to share it this week.. this comes to us from October 9th, 1982 at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto, CA. This was by all reports, a fun, sunny day on which both band and audience thoroughly enjoyed themselves and each other. You can hear it in the songs.. some favorites of mine 'On The Road Again' with a nice transition into 'Beat It On Down The Line'.. a great version of 'West L.A. Fadeaway' a song I usually don't much care for.. 'Dupree's' is fun as well.. and the ending 'Music Never Stops' into 'Deal' is smoking.. This was supposed to be from Rango Keshavan's Master recording, as mastered by Charlie Miller.. wonderfully sounding tape.. I hope you enjoy it!     Grateful Dead Frost Amphitheatre - Stanford University Palo Alto, CA 10/9/82 - Saturday   One Alabama Getaway [4:58] > Greatest Story Ever Told [4:02] They Love Each Other [7:34] On The Road Again [3:32] > Beat It On Down The Line [3:22] West L.A. On this Friday the 13th I decided to bring you probably one of the most famous Friday the 13th shows the Grateful Dead performed - this one from Friday, July 13, 1984 at the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. While the show is justifiably famous for the appearance of Dark Star in the 2nd set; I'm completionist enough to include the 1st set this week. All in all, this is a good 1st set and a fine example of early-to-mid 80s Dead. Always a beautiful place to see the band, the crowd is treated to a rocking 'Bertha->Greatest Story' to start the show. 'Dire Wolf' which follows is always a treat, and Bobby does a good job on 'C C Rider'. There are solid versions of the rest of the tunes, with the possible exception of 'Dupree's' where Jerry gets a bit lost. :)     Grateful Dead Greek Theatre - University of California Berkeley, CA 7/13/84 - Friday   One Bertha > Greatest Story Ever Told ; Dire Wolf ; C C Rider ; Loser ; Cassidy ; Dupree's Diamond Blues ; Hell In A Bucket> Might As Well   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here: http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod071318.mp3   I hope you have a very LUCKY day ;)   thanks to all of you who listen to and support the Deadpod     a short note on my logo.. after over 10 years of publishing the Deadpod, I was served a letter form Rhino/Warner Brothers/GDP informing me that my logo was an unauthorized use of Grateful Dead trademarks. Personally I don't get it, but I don't have the resources to fight it so I've had to remove the classic Deadpod stealie.. just so you know why it is fading away..

You've probably heard that Phil Lesh and Bob Weir have been playing some wonderful 'duo' shows together this month.. while I'm still contemplating playing one of the audience tapes of one of these gems, I decided to bring you another 'Phil & Friends' acoustic show that started the genre - this took place back on September 24th, 1994 at the Berkeley Community Theater in Berkeley CA, a benefit for music in the local schools. It was of course the last 'acoustic' Dead performance, and for the most part is quite sweet and wonderful to hear. I hope you enjoy this performance, and I do envy those of you lucky enough to see Phil  & Bob this tour!     Phil Lesh and Friends Live at Berkely Community Center on 1994-09-24 Acoustic Set ( 95:31 ) 01 Bob Weir VH1 Unplugged Intro 02 Walking Blues 03 Lazy River Road 04 K.C. A real classic recording of some outstanding good ol' Grateful Dead this week, as we enjoy the band's performance on June 27th, 1969 at Veterans Auditorium in Santa Rosa California. This is one long set, as there were several bands on the bill this night and we get to hear some of the first performances of several songs destined to become classics. Slewfoot - the opening number wasn't one of those, but this is likely to be something you've never heard before - an old Johnny Horton number, with Jerry on Pedal Steel (he would also be on pedal steel guitar on Dire Wolf and Green Green Grass of Home on this set). Mama Tried follows, the 4th time the band has played it, even more country sounding than it would sound in years to come. A beautiful High Time follows, in only its third appearance.. Dupree's Diamond Blues follows then Me & My Uncle, still new in the band's rotation. A very different opening to Casey Jones is a treat to hear, as is Bobby handling the vocals on Dire Wolf. Other highlights include Pigpen on his only number here, "Big Boss Man", and of course Dark Star and St. Stephen.. Green Green Grass of Home, was made popular by Porter Wagoner on the country charts around this time..  I hope you enjoy this great recording of some wonderful early Dead..    Grateful Dead Veterans Auditorium Santa Rosa, CA  6/27/69 - Friday One - 1:20:44 Intro [0:05] ; Slewfoot [3:04];[0:17] ; Mama Tried [2:41] > High Time [5:55]%[0:07] ; Dupree's Diamond Blues [3:57];[0:24] ; Me And My Uncle [3:20];[0:04] % Jam [1:28] > Casey Jones [4:36];[3:24] ; Dire Wolf [2:24];[0:50] ; Sittin On Top Of The World [3:23] > Big Boss Man [5:42];[0:11] % Dark Star [25:53] > Saint Stephen [6:52] > The Eleven [2:37] > Green Green Grass Of Home [5:30];[1:42]  Encore - 9:30 It's All Over Now, Baby Blue [8:#58#]    Peter Grant on banjo on Slewfoot, Jerry on Pedal Steel on Slewfoot, Dire Wolf and Green Grass   You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:  http://traffic.libsyn.com/deadshow/deadpod100716.mp3   Your kind contributions allow the Deadpod to continue to exist..  thank you so much ..    Peace and joy to you and yours..

This week I reached back to find a show befitting the 4/20 occasion and decided that despite its flaws only April 20th, 1969 would do. This one has been on the request list for some time, but it is a gas. This is of course a great example of 'good ol' Grateful Dead' with Pigpen featured prominently on Good Morning Little Schoolgirl and Lovelight, but it also includes a mind-bending Dark Star, a wonderful St. Stephen and a pair of wonderful encores - Dupree's Diamond Blues and Mountains of the Moon... not to mention the always powerful 'Death Don't Have No Mercy'.. Granted the recording suffers from some hiss in spots and doesn't have quite the headroom I would like, but if you let yerself explore where this wild band of outlaws takes you on this evening 43 years ago I'm sure you'll smile............. I must say that my listeners are simply the best ! I received an simply perfect request this week for the show we're going to start listening to this week as I was casting about in my mind trying to decide what to play... and what a show it is. This show not only shows the band in a period of transition from their slower tempo early '77 style of playing to the more uptempo arrangements of 1978 but its simply one of the best shows of the entire year. The first set which we'll listen to this week, not only blasts out of the gates with a fabulous Bertha->Good Lovin' , but keeps up a most memorable and high energy performance on every tune. Not to be missed, the set closing Let It Grow is truly outstanding, and really shows the unique ability of the band to fire off in all directions yet to find the 'one' and bring us all back into harmony and love.. whew.. a great set and the second set from next week is even better.....Grateful DeadCotterell Gym, Reid Athletic Center, Colgate UniversityHamilton, NY11-4-77Set I:Bertha -> [7:52]Good Lovin' [6:32]Brown-Eyed Women [6:07]Cassidy [5:19]It Must Have Been the Roses [7:31]Sunrise [4:34]New Minglewood Blues [5:51]Dupree's Diamond Blues [6:25]Let It Grow [14:11]You can listen to this week's Deadpod here:http://media.libsyn.com/media/deadshow/deadpod110609.mp3thanks for listening - and enjoy the show!

Time for something a little different, here's a show I've wanted to play for some time, a really solid show that features Jerry in fine voice and the band playing tightly.. I especially enjoy the Jack Straw->Sugaree opener and the West LA in the first set, Bobby announces it's Brent's birthday (which its not).. but Brent does close the set with a fine 'Far From Me'....Please note: I understand that I had a misplaced song in the original podcast - my appologies - if you downloaded the first version you may need to re-download the corrected one..Grateful Dead Boston Garden Boston, MADate 9/18/82 - SaturdayOne Jack Straw [5:03] > Sugaree [11:43] ; Mama Tried [2:31] > Mexicali Blues [4:49] ; West L.A. I don't always get to play requests - but sometimes I can and this week I'm sharing a show that was recently requested - October 2nd, 1977. This is a fine performance - and a Betty board to boot. I think the fun they're having back on stage is clearly reflected in their playing. This is a fine recording of a fun show I think you'll enjoy. I need to take a moment to THANK everyone who contributed to the Deadpod last week!! Your support will be a huge help to keep us strong and to support our community radio station KOPN. I'm going to do my best to get those copies of 'Rockin' the Cradle' out to you as soon as I can. I have to wait to get them from Rhino, and I go in for surgery in a little over a week - so it might be a little while before they go out - so please be patient. I'll get them out to everyone! thanks again!!!It's not too late to make a donation - just click the button on the left hand side of the page!
