Five Eight emerged from the Athens scene in the late 1980s with live shows fans described as "brilliance bordering on a train wreck," delivered with frontman Mike Mantione's trademark honesty and immediacy. As mentioned, there's a documentary called "Weirdo: The Story of Five Eight," created by filmmaker and music journalist Marc Pilvinsky, which was filmed over a nine-year period. Ahead of the Five Eight show this Saturday, we listen back to Kim's 2024 conversation with Five Eight's Mike Mantione and documentarian Marc Pilvinsky. ✦ Artist and music enthusiast Kosmo Vinyl spent several decades immersed in music and began his professional career at London's pioneering indie label, "Stiff Records." Beatle proteges Badfinger were an Apple band that simultaneously produced some of the finest pop/rock of their era while beset by management malfeasance leading directly to their decimation by suicide. It was fifty years ago that Pete Ham, their songwriter responsible for “No Matter What,” “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue” and co-writer with Tommy Evans of “Without You” took his life at 27. Only a few months before, he and the band recorded one final album (at Apple Studios), Head First. Multi-instrumentalist and singer/songwriter Bob Jackson, the group's newest addition, was fully on board with the project, which went unreleased at the time but through his determination, was tracked down and fully realized in late 2024. In this conversation, Bob discusses his tenure in the band alongside Pete, Tommy, Mike Gibbins and the late Joey Molland, as well as his work with them through the years that followed as well as the lasting impact of the two tragedies. This week we return to Hartford Connecticut for the second set of the band's performance on April 17, 1982.  This set starts out with a smokin' 'Shakedown Street' featuring some exuberant Brent runs and interplay with Garcia. They then go into a top version of 'Sailor>Saint' which culminates in a bit of a Spanish Jam before leading into Drums and Space. 'Uncle John's Band' comes out of Space, not a usual occurance, and leads too into a hot 'Not Fade Away'. 'Wharf Rat' takes the ballad spot, and they rock out with 'Around and Around'; into a killer 'One More Saturday Night'. You might notice there are no stops between these second set songs on this night.  What a classic set list we have on this week's Deadpod. While this show took place back in 1991, none of the songs debuted earlier than 1972. Better yet, they are all played with joy and authority reminiscent of earlier periods in the band's history.  The tight opening China>Rider portends a great second set, and we are not disappointed for following this we have a fine 'Looks Like Rain' highlighted by some Healy echo on Bobby's vocals, then Garcia leads the ensemble into a long and dreamy 'Dark Star. The Star goes seamlessly into an interesting drums and space but then returns before leading into a continuation of 'Playin' In the Band' from the previous evening. Jerry then brings out 'Black Peter' in the ballad spot and delivers a soulful rendition. The set closing 'Lovelight' brings the crowd one last chance to shake their bones. “Da Baby a real one” ~ Trap Dickey Hartsville, South Carolina artist Trap Dickey skips class with Lalaa Shepard of The Progress Report to speak about his song “Blue Devils” blowing up online, putting on for the Carolina's,  ‘Trap Or Die' project, plans for upcoming music, fatherhood, and leaving the streets to become a full-time rapper. 

Do you know the tragic story of Badfinger? Behind such life-affirming songs as “No Matter What,” “Day After Day” and “Baby Blue” and the much-covered power ballad “Without You” lay a dark tale in which Badfinger's manager defrauded the band and left them destitute. Bob Jackson played keyboards and guitar in the last Badfinger lineup that featured Pete Ham, the honey-voiced singer-songwriter behind most of those hits. This lineup recorded the album Head First in late 1974, but Warner Bros. refused to release it amid the manager's financial misconduct. Ham took his own life months later. Olive GreenThe greens are an interesting color for casual clothing tops and olive green appears to be trending for 2025. Olive Green tends to be one of the warmer toned greens with a slight yellow undertone.  4. Powder BlueAnother trending color for this year, Powder Blue is one of the lighter blue colors. It's in the range of blue-greens if you look at a color palette. It tends to be a pale blue color that is much lighter than a navy blue, for example. Color names light Sky Blue or Light Blue would be in this spectrum, with something like a Baby Blue being a slightly more vibrant variation. 5. RedReds are looking to be popular again in 2025, following up on the trend that saw vibrant reds sell well in 2024. There are many variations of reds, but fiery reds will be a dominant red this year. Fiery red is a bold red, with a reddish orange tone. It can be a great base layer for the right graphic design, especially if you're looking for a statement top. 6. MustardMustard is an interesting color. It's sometimes a love it or hate it color, but for those who love it, it can be a statement piece. Rich and warm in tone, mustard is a yellowish-brown color, closer to a Dijon mustard if you consider the condiment. It can be a light or dark shade. Mustard falls somewhere between yellow and orange on the color spectrum. Will 2025 be a breakout year for mustard? 7. LavenderPurple is often a popular color and lavender is a very pale purple shade. It can appear in quite a range of shades and tones for t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies. Lavender is best described as a blue-tinged pale, light gray-purple color. Neutral BeigeThe neutrals is a trend that we clearly saw emerging in 2024 and it is expected to continue in 2025. Neutral Beige colors make a great base for graphics and as an option to a plain white top. Where white t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies are more stark in nature, the neutrals add a little more color structure and softness, making them a very popular addition to any wardrobe. Watch for color names like Sand or Natural for this color style. 9. PinkThe pinks were popular in 2024 and we expect to see this continue into 2025, based on all of the data and color predictions that we reviewed. Light or pale pinks, in particular, are what to watch for this year for many of the same reasons that neutral beige will be popular (but with a little more distinction than a true neutral color). 10. Navy BlueNavy Blue is a very popular base color for t-shirts, sweatshirts and hoodies and will be a go-to choice for a dark colored top in 2025. For their new LP, X’s Cigarettes After Sex are playing some of the world’s most iconic venues including Madison Square Garden, London’s O2, and the hallowed stage of the Kia Forum in Inglewood for two sold-0ut nights in LA.  X’s is a little different from previous CAS albums. While those have primarily centered around a composite of different relationships, for X’s bandleader Greg Gonzalez captured the emotional arc of one important love affair that lasted four years. “Baby Blue Movie” is a down-tempo banger whose title references softcore adult films while the lyrics and melody feel like a warm embrace.
