Voiceover requires performance, communication, interpretation, and storytelling skills. There is no magic number of coaching sessions. Your background, experience, and existing skills will affect how much training you need. A demo should be the result of preparation, not the beginning of it. Your coach should evaluate you as an individual. Training shouldn't be a one-size-fits-all process. Your demo is a marketing tool. Every spot should demonstrate something meaningful to a potential buyer. Connection matters more than simply reading clearly. Your ability to communicate a thought and engage another human being is what makes the performance valuable. You need to learn to make choices independently. Your coach won't be sitting beside you when the audition arrives. Voiceover is a business. Performance is only one part of building a sustainable career. Vet your coach. Research their experience, work, reputation, teaching philosophy, and results before you invest. Don't be afraid of "not yet." More preparation now can save you from an expensive and ineffective demo later.

Hey there, hero!I've noticed that some people have forgotten, or have never learned, the most useful words you can use when you are getting feedback from those who might give you work.Without judging the quality of the feedback, without deciding whether to use their feedback or not, just say “thank you.”I've seen some younger (and older) creative types, when getting feedback, perceive any criticism as an attack. They then launch into an explanation of their choices, or contradicting the logic of the coach, teacher, casting director or editor, or any number of other defenses of their choices.There's no need to do that, unless asked to explain those choices.If that isn't requested, just thank the other party and move on. Whether you agree with them or not, there's no need to feel attacked.I mean, hey - you asked for the feedback (I'm talking about seeking work, not some “fan” telling you that you suck on social media = although “thank you” stops the conversation/trolling there as well), so be gracious about getting it.Just say “thank you.” And listen constructively to whatever else they have to say.Is that how you graciously receive feedback and constructive criticism? The Apps and Taps lecture series is designed for people who want to continue learning about how to make the most of their iPhones while totally blind. While it doesn't require people to have participated in the Unseen Touchscreen course, it assumes that participants have a basic working knowledge of how to use VoiceOver and the iOS operating system. Lectures of the Unseen Touchscreen course remain available in the CCB podcast if needed. In the Apps and Taps lecture series, we will dive deeply into various settings and concepts in the iOS operating system. One priority will be discussing new capabilities and changes which emerge in iOS, such as the arrival of Apple Intelligence. We will also go on deep dives into how to use a wide range of apps which are accessible using VoiceOver. These apps may be made by Apple and come on your iPhone. They may also be developed by third-party developers and be available from the App Store. Similar to the format used for the Unseen Touchscreen course, there will be two sessions per month. The first session will typically occur on the first Wednesday of the month. It will consist of a lecture which will be recorded for inclusion in the CCB podcast. Those who attend the lecture will be able to ask questions after the lecture is recorded, if time permits. The second session will typically be held on the third Wednesday of the month and will not be recorded. It will be an opportunity to ask any questions related to that month's lecture or any other topic related to using iPhones from a blindness perspective. This will hopefully make certain that people get help and ideas from fellow iPhone users with whatever their current issues or areas of curiosity might be. It will also be a chance to learn about any newly discovered accessible apps.

In this episode of the AppleVis Extra, David Nason speaks with Rocco Fiorentino, developer of FloType, an upcoming VoiceOver-first keyboard for blind and low-vision users. If you remember the speed and simplicity offered by Fleksy and later FlickType, FloType will feel immediately familiar. Rocco explains how his background as an audio engineer and producer gradually led him into development, first through scripting tools designed to make Pro Tools more efficient with VoiceOver, and eventually to building a keyboard intended to solve one of the persistent frustrations of touchscreen devices: typing quickly without needing to hit every virtual key precisely.FloType takes a very different approach from Apple's conventional onscreen keyboard. Rather than requiring you to locate individual letters accurately, you tap approximately where you believe the letters would be on a QWERTY keyboard. FloType analyzes the pattern of those taps and predicts the word you intended. Swipe right to accept the suggestion, swipe up or down to move through alternatives, and continue typing without having to find a spacebar. In the episode, Rocco gives a hands-on demonstration showing just how quickly this can work, including entering words, correcting an incorrect prediction, adding punctuation and emoji, deleting text, and switching to manual character entry when a word isn't in FloType's dictionary.There is considerably more going on than word prediction. FloType can be used system-wide through an iOS keyboard extension, while gestures provide access to editing commands that would otherwise require finding controls on the screen. Rocco discusses cursor navigation, manual entry, customizable sounds and haptics, key size and contrast options for low-vision users, and plans for a self-voicing experience. He also talks about an Apple Watch version currently being tested, where limitations in watchOS gesture handling present some interesting accessibility challenges. Multi-language support is another major goal, with English and Spanish planned as the initial languages when FloType reaches the App Store.The conversation also offers an interesting look behind the scenes at accessible app development. Rocco is totally blind and discusses using Swift and Xcode, AI-assisted development, sighted feedback for visual design, and extensive input from blind and low-vision beta testers. He explains why supporting another language involves far more than translating an interface: FloType needs to understand the vocabulary, grammar, keyboard layout, and patterns of each language well enough for its prediction system to remain useful. The pair also discuss FloType's eventual business model, the realities of maintaining an accessibility-focused app as Apple changes VoiceOver and its operating systems, and Rocco's commitment to ensuring the project can continue even if he is someday unable to maintain it himself.This episode should be particularly interesting to anyone who misses Fleksy or FlickType, finds conventional touchscreen typing cumbersome, doesn't use Braille Screen Input, or simply wants another fast way to enter text on an iPhone or iPad.
