This week, I talk with Cobie LaJeanne about her pitch-black thriller Blood in the Cradle. We dive into her inspiration for the story, how the book developed over time, and what it was like creating a detective with synesthesia!Blood in the Cradle SynopsisWhen decorated detective Chloe Van Belle receives a call about a severed limb in a fountain, she dreads returning to Encounters, a renowned angel-worshipping church tied to her dark childhood wounds. She's further shocked to learn six-year-old Lillian vanished [from the congregation] without being reported.Chloe's half-sister Rosie, a devout believer engaged to the reverend's son, remains unwavering that everything unfolds according to divine will, refusing to see the evil in front of her.An eerie search leads to Lillian's body tucked in a cradle with a vintage watch, linking the crime to a similar murder twenty years ago. The gruesome scene triggers Chloe's morbid fascination with death, making her visual-gustatory synesthesia, which gives murder a literal sweet taste, harder to hide. With Chloe's nightmares and half-memories resurfacing, she engages in a macabre game of cat and mouse with the killer. As casualties grow and evidence points to the highest levels of the church leadership, Chloe must protect Rosie and her team—but is it from a monster or herself? Tapputi is widely regarded as one of the first known chemists, and her name appears in a Mesopotamian cuneiform tablet dating to approximately 1200 BCE. She is believed to have worked in the Babylonian royal palace, where she held the title of “Belatekallim,” meaning a female overseer or supervisor. Tapputi is most famous for making perfumes, the descriptions of her work provide some of the earliest documented evidence of chemical distillation and solvent use—techniques that form the foundation of modern chemistry. If you ever wondered what caused the Great Nanny Unemployment Crisis of the early 90s, wonder no more. THE HAND THAT ROCK THE CRADLE is the worst kind of schlock: schlock that uses shock-value to fool audiences and critics into thinking it's profound cinema. Everybody's gotta start somewhere, and that applies to Curtis Hanson as much as it applies to anyone else. Still, it's weird to think of the man behind L.A. Confidential and 8 Mile as the director of THE HAND THAT ROCKS THE CRADLE - a movie that, to be charitable, is not quite on the same league as his other work. But can we at least agree that Rebecca De Mornay deserved her MTV Movie Award? It is the turn of the nineteenth century. The industrial age has begun. Steam powered ships has taken over the oceans. Factories are going up across Europe and America. There is a resurgence of activity in the castles in the mountains and when the Crimean War breaks out Zabella is sent to her grandmother, Rehema to learn about the dragons.Rehema mentally transcends the girl to the First Split (1000 A.D.), the wars her mother, Apollonia, fought to destroy the dragons as they had spread across Asia, Africa, and Europe. It began as they built castles and started controlling men with gold. The dragons led the Romans, Egyptians, and Chinese empires over the centuries. The dragons turn Molytans into Ogres as their generals that lead huge armies and protect them when their powers wane at night.New dragons come to power in Europe and now threaten the balance of power in the world. The world of dragons is one of total destruction. They take over an area and cause wars until the world is in ruins. The dragons can't be killed but can be drained of power causing them to turn into ruby-like stones. Only a dragon can consume another dragon, increasing its power.Apollonia becomes a sorceress and can retain her power for years out of water with the help of her sisters. She raises a champion in France to battle the dragons' growing threat of England's Vargrerot and Russia's Deyhezas. After destroying a Castle in the Alps and capturing its dragon in the Ruby Cradle, Napoli, the Dragon Killer, confronts the English at the Battle of Hastings. Apollonia returns to the sea and spawns two more mermaids. Afterwards she returns to the world of men to continue the hundred year war and is burned at the stake as Joan of Arc.Zabella knows she must prepare men to fight and destroy the dragons before the world is at war once more. She knows dragons can be killed.Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/houseofmysteryradio. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
On July 4, President Trump signed a sweeping new law that makes major changes to the social safety net—with serious consequences for families and children. Child and family policy expert Professor Taryn Morrissey breaks down the Republican-backed legislation, which slashes Medicaid, SNAP, and other key supports that millions of families rely on. She examines how the law shifts resources away from low-income and younger Americans—especially children—and toward wealthier, older households. Morrissey discusses how these changes could make inequality worse and what it would actually mean to put kids at the center of national policy. For more on this topic: Read Morrissey's recent opinion article published in The Hill: Trump's Medicaid and SNAP red tape will devastate millions of Americans Read her op-ed published in The Progressive: GOP Tax Bill Will Hurt Children and Families Check out the book she co-authored, Cradle to Kindergarten: A New Plan to Combat Inequality DrKfdZ5s5lsT6o5wu9hU

The Jay Franze Show: Your backstage pass to the entertainment industry
Send us a textJason Chapin takes us behind the curtain of his father's most enduring musical legacy. As the 50th anniversary of "Cats in the Cradle" approaches, Jason reveals the surprising true origins of the iconic song – a poem written by his mother Sandy about the distant relationship she observed between her first husband and his father. What began as an observation of family dysfunction would eventually become Harry Chapin's signature hit, though not without skepticism. "My mother told my father there's no way this is gonna be a single," Jason shares. "Back then, hit songs were not about fathers and sons." Against all expectations, the song climbed to number one, cementing its place in music history. The discussion weaves through Harry's multifaceted career, from his early days making Oscar-nominated documentaries to his late-blooming music career at age 30. Jason offers fascinating glimpses into his father's creative process, his relentless work ethic that produced 11 albums in just 10 years, and his equal dedication to humanitarian causes. We learn how Harry co-founded Why Hunger in 1975, performed approximately 100 benefit concerts annually, and became such a persistent presence lobbying Congress that lawmakers would try to avoid him – leading Harry to famously corner them in Capitol Building restrooms. This episode paints a portrait of an artist deeply committed not just to his craft, but to making tangible change in the world. Jason explains how his father's legacy continues through the new documentary "Harry Chapin: Cats in the Cradle 50th Anniversary," featuring interviews with Billy Joel, Judy Collins, Whitfield Crane from Ugly Kid Joe, and many others who've been touched by his father's music.Whether you're a longtime fan of Harry Chapin or discovering his work for the first time, this conversation offers valuable perspective on how one song can transcend generations, and how an artist's impact can extend far beyond their music. As Harry's credo reminds us: "When in doubt, do something."LinksJay Franze: https://JayFranze.com Support the show

First up on the podcast, South Africa's Cradle of Humankind is home to the world's greatest concentration of ancestral human remains, including our own genus, Homo, Australopithecus, and a more robust hominin called Paranthropus. Proving they were there at the same time is challenging, but new fossil evidence seems to point to coexistence. Producer Kevin McLean discusses what a multihominin landscape might have looked like with Contributing Correspondent Ann Gibbons. Next on the show, should robots grow and adapt like babies? Host Sarah Crespi talks with roboticist Philippe Wyder about a platform for exploring this idea. In his Science Advances paper, Wyder and his team demonstrate how simple stick-shaped robots with magnets at either end can join up for more complicated tasks and shed parts to adapt to new ones. Belesene Spaziergänge mit dudeliger Musik durchleben wir diese Woche dank Lissi in Der Buchspazierer und hetzen mit den Heads of State durch Europa, nicht ohne politisch gemischte Gefühle. Um dem Namen unseres Podcasts endlich mal wieder etwas Sinn einzuhauchen, war unsere dieswöchige Gästin gleich zwei mal in der Sneak, und zwar in der Stephen-King-Verfilmung Life of Chuck sowie in Electric Child. Christoph hat in Oben ausgiebig Tränen vergossen und Lisse legt Stefan wärmstens The Studio ans Herz. Every baby deserves safety. In this episode of Canadian Podcast, ZAK sits down with Jordan Guildford, the founder of Gems for Gems and The Gems Cup, to share the deeply personal story behind Hope's Cradle, a quiet solution to a devastating problem. After the heartbreaking abandonment of a newborn on Christmas Eve in 2017, Jordan and a dedicated team, including homicide detective Dave Sweet, worked to create an anonymous safe surrender space for newborns across Canada.Hope's Cradle is now installed at select fire stations and continues to grow nationwide. It offers dignity. It offers safety. It offers a way forward for women facing what feels like the end of the road. This isn't just about crisis. It's about compassion, collaboration, and saving lives, one cradle at a time.
Over half of the women who have abortions have some Christian religious affiliation, and they believe that abortion was the solution to their problems. But now they live with shame, regret, and unacknowledged grief that leaves them suffering in silence. While they wonder if they've committed an unforgivable sin, women are afraid to turn to the church for support. Kim Ketola knows this pain personally. She will join us to offer practical steps, biblical retellings, and personal experiences to start broken-hearted women on the road to rediscovering God’s love, mercy, and grace.Become a Parshall Partner: http://moodyradio.org/donateto/inthemarket/partnersSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

What does it take to create healthy neighborhoods that include broad, deep, and permanent pathways to prosperity for low-income families? That question is the focus of today's episode with Carol Redmond Naughton, CEO of Purpose Built Communities based in Atlanta. “I really have become an advocate for community development as a way to move the needle on health outcomes. And I'm not talking about simply putting a kidney dialysis center in the bottom floor of a senior high rise,” Naughton says. “I don't mean to say that that's not a good thing to do, but we've got to move upstream. We've got to be way upstream and be thinking about: How are we building communities and supporting children, so those children 60 years from now will not need kidney dialysis?” In a conversation that was first published in 2022, Naughton speaks with Movement Is Life's Dr. Tamara Huff about the difference between access to health care and health outcomes and the importance of addressing the social determinants of health. She also calls on all of us to reflect on the systems that have kept people trapped in poverty — especially Black and Brown communities — and consider what it takes to create communities that support a “cradle to college pipeline.” Never miss an episode – be sure to subscribe to The Health Disparities podcast from Movement Is Life on Apple Podcasts, YouTube, or wherever you get your podcasts.
