On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Bob Lanzetti, best known as one of the founding members of Snarky Puppy. I've admired Bob's playing for a long time, so getting the chance to talk with him felt especially meaningful. We begin with something many musicians quietly carry with them: the fear of hand issues and how that concern evolves over the course of a career. Bob reflects honestly on how he thinks about it now compared to earlier years. From there, we rewind to the beginning—growing up around his dad's guitar, discovering The Beatles, and the simple invitation that changed everything: “Learn this song and you can sit in with my band.” That moment set Bob firmly on the path toward becoming a guitarist. He traces his journey through early mentors, jazz studies, and eventually to the University of North Texas, where he found a musical community that would change his life—and where Snarky Puppy first came together. We spend time talking about the musical ecosystem around North Texas as well, especially the gospel and R&B scenes that shaped Bob's ear in ways the classroom couldn't. Bob shares how Snarky Puppy actually learns and rehearses music—often through oral tradition, demos, and Logic sessions—and how the band's three-guitar setup works without stepping on each other's sonic space. Along the way, he reflects on something younger musicians often overlook: the importance of restraint, listening, and self-balancing within a band. One of my favorite parts of the conversation centers on Bob's Nosferatu project, where he composed and performed an original score for the classic silent film during the COVID years. That project opened the door to exploring 20th-century classical textures, string writing, layered guitars, and production techniques. We wrap up by talking about the wide range of influences that shape Bob's music—from Charlie Christian and Jim Hall to Sonic Youth and Derek Bailey—and what's ahead in 2026, including GroundUP Festival, touring with Snarky Puppy alongside the Metropole Orchestra, his trio work, and the growing role of producing in his creative life.Key TakeawaysMusicians confront physical concerns over time — long careers require resilience and perspective.Early invitations can shape a life path — a simple opportunity to sit in with a band set Bob on the guitar journey.Community matters — the University of North Texas and the surrounding Dallas scene were foundational for Snarky Puppy.Listening and restraint define great band playing — especially in complex ensemble settings like a three-guitar lineup.Musical learning often happens by ear — oral tradition and demos play a huge role in how bands develop material.Creative side projects expand the palette — Bob's Nosferatu score opened the door to new textures and production ideas.Producing can become another creative outlet — shaping the sound of recordings scratches the same itch as performing.Music from the EpisodeB - Bob LanzettiAnonymous - Bob LanzettiThe Seven Deadly Sins (from Nosferatu) - Bob LanzettiJenny is a Donkey - Bob LanzettiAbout the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with pedal steel guitarist Travis Toy for a wide-ranging conversation about craft, longevity, and what it really takes to build a career on the road. Travis has spent decades shaping the sound of modern country music—from his long run with Rascal Flatts to his current role touring with Luke Bryan—and his perspective comes from thousands of nights onstage. We start by tracing his musical roots in Kentucky, where Travis grew up surrounded by music and developed an early obsession with the pedal steel guitar. Those early years of practice and curiosity laid the foundation for the disciplined approach he still brings to every gig today. From there, we talk about the realities of the Nashville scene: arriving in town, finding opportunities, and slowly building a reputation that leads to bigger stages and long-term touring gigs. Travis shares stories from his early days in Nashville and reflects on what it meant to spend years touring with Rascal Flatts before stepping into a new chapter with Luke Bryan. We also dig into his solo instrumental record and why writing original music was important to him. Along the way, Travis talks about how his background as a drummer and his love of fusion music still influence his phrasing and groove on pedal steel. It's a thoughtful look at touring culture, social media, and the mindset required to stay grounded in a career that lives on the road.Key TakeawaysMastery starts early — Travis's obsessive practice as a young musician shaped the discipline he brings to every gig.Pedal steel continues to evolve — modern players are expanding the instrument beyond traditional roles.Reputation matters in Nashville — professionalism and reliability open doors to long-term touring work.Touring is a long game — sustaining a career on the road requires balance, perspective, and resilience.Musical influences cross genres — Travis's background as a drummer and fusion fan shapes his approach to steel guitar.Writing original music can deepen your voice — his solo record gave him space to explore the instrument in new ways.Longevity comes from staying grounded — focusing on the music and the people around it keeps the career moving forward.Music from the EpisodeEntry Point (Travis Toy)JDT (Travis Toy)Wingman (Travis Toy)Alabama Jubilee (Travis Toy)Hot Button (Travis Toy)About the PodcastThe Bandwich Tapes is a podcast hosted by Brad Williams, featuring conversations with musicians, composers, producers, and creative thinkers about their musical journeys. On this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I sit down with guitarist and composer Mark Lettieri for a conversation that lives right at the intersection of groove, discipline, and musical curiosity. Mark has spent years carving out a distinctive voice on the guitar—whether through his solo work, his baritone guitar explorations, or his playing with Snarky Puppy and Fearless Flyers—and this conversation is a window into how that voice developed. We talk about what has been a particularly full year for Mark: touring internationally, playing iconic rooms like the Blue Note, and balancing the demands of the road with the rare gift of time at home. For Mark, staying active isn't just part of the job—it's a creative engine. The more he plays, the more ideas emerge. One of my favorite parts of our conversation centers on restraint—the idea that what you don't play can matter just as much as what you do. Mark reflects on the records he grew up listening to, where the entire band worked together to shape a moment, and how those lessons show up when he's on stage or in the studio with world-class musicians. We also get into the nuts and bolts of being a working musician today: communication in the studio, professionalism on the gig, showing up prepared, and reading the room. Along the way, Mark shares stories about his early career in advertising and PR, a surprising David Crosby connection that introduced him to open tunings straight from the source, and what's ahead—including a fascinating upcoming project with sitarist Purbhayan Chatterjee, new baritone-driven material, and the continuing musical adventures that connect his solo work, Snarky Puppy, and Fearless Flyers.Key TakeawaysRestraint is musical power — sometimes the most impactful choice is knowing when not to play.Groove starts with listening — the pocket comes from how musicians respond to one another in real time.Professionalism matters — showing up early, prepared, and ready to collaborate keeps you in demand.Baritone guitar as a voice — Mark has helped expand the instrument's role beyond heavy music into funk and groove-based contexts.Creative momentum comes from staying active — touring, writing, and performing feed the creative cycle.Musical identity evolves — Mark's journey reflects influences from rock, funk, jazz, and beyond.Collaboration drives discovery — projects like his upcoming work with sitarist Purbhayan Chatterjee push his sound into new territory.Music from the EpisodeMagnetar (Mark Lettieri - feat. I'm super happy to have the delightful couple Jackie Berkley and Zach Schmidt of Golden Everything on the show this week!! Both lovely humans and talented artists with separate paths, Zach and Jackie recently formed an amazing alt-country super-duo, and are celebrating their successful debut album together, Sweet Old World, an absolute gorgeous take on folk, country and Americana vibes. I discuss with Zack and Jackie about how their choices have lead to a healthy outlook in what can be a crazy and difficult world we call the music business. With a new album and a new baby at home, this dynamic couple is making it all happen by building a strong and organic team from the ground up. It's admirable and inspiring.Making their combination even more intriguing, Zach is a long-time stalwart on the Nashville music scene. He has two solo albums to his name and his most recent 2021 effort, Raise A Banner, is produced by Sadler Vaden and features The 400 Unit as his stellar backing band. Zach and Jackie's origin story is a meet-cute for the ages, and Zach's story of becoming a songwriter is truly legendary. We all go deep in this fun and engaging conversation, and I can't wait to share this one with all of you!!Show Notes:For more information on Golden Everything and Zack Schmidt as well as tour dates click HERE:Episode Chapters:00:00 – Episode Intro with Host Josh Rosenberg 04:36 – Spring Awakening and New Beginnings07:36 – Performing at Newport Folk Festival 10:38 – Family Life and New Arrivals 13:31 – Musical Backgrounds and Influences 16:48 – The Journey to Nashville 19:36 – Biking Across America and Songwriting 24:40 – The Journey of a Lifetime 26:38 – The Impact of Music on Life 29:36 – Inspiration from Real-Life Stories 32:48 – Finding Community in Nashville 33:38 – The Magic of Santa's Pub 39:35 – Collaborations and Musical Connections 44:40 – Creating Music Under Pressure 49:09 – The Journey to Collaboration 52:29 – Navigating Parenthood and Music 56:11 – Health Challenges and Resilience 59:29 – Plans for the Future 01:04:36 – The DIY Approach to Music 01:06:37 – Songwriting Through Parenthood01:09:50 – Episode Outro with Host Josh RosenbergFor more information on Roadcase:https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email: info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music: "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer
"This recording from Machu Picchu was very beautiful on its own, with the resonant sound of hoof beats, and the sounds of birds and insects seeming to suspend time. I wanted to make sure any transformation of those sounds still honored those qualities. I wanted the piece to linger over those sections, so they're extended--by looping and by dropping pitch, to allow these sounds to touch lower parts of the sonic spectrum. (Even with years of digital work, my roots are in tape.) "I arranged the transformed sections of the field recording into a structure based on these excerpts of the recording, their transformed (or not) speed and pitch, and each excerpt's relations to the other excerpts around it. "The suspended-time quality of the original recording led me (as a guitar player) to think of the instrument most likely to mirror that quality: the pedal steel. I recorded multiple improvisations with the pedal steel in which I responded to the sounds of the field recording excerpts, in a kind of dialog with the sounds. They exist in their place and time, and my sounds exist in another, though we can communicate across those distances." He has been playing music since he could walk and, currently, Amico is one of the amazing players that make up Charles Wesly Godwin's band The Allegheny High. - Amico has a wild story. A couple years ago, he started touring with Charles Wesly Godwin as the Merch Guy! You'd find him at the tables slingin' Lean Mean T's and and records. He spent a couple years working his way through the ranks of a merch game until an opportunity came where The Allegheny High needed a Pedal Steel player to fill the shoes of Read Connolly. Being a life long musician, Amico Demuzio stepped right up to the plate and the rest became history. This week, we sit down and talk about it all. From the first time he picked up an instrument to the very first show with Charles Wesly Godwin and The Allegheny High… and how his gear didn't work for it! This week I am excited to share a collaboration with photographer, avid runner, and pedal steel ringer, Bill McCullough! Bill is an amazing photographer based in Austin whose street work I have admired for years. We met courtesy through the Artist Run Club when the group visited the studio he and his wife Meredith Miller, an accomplished printmaker and book artist share. Bill has also played pedal steel with the lauded Austin band, Knife in the Water for going on 20 years. We met on Bill's porch and played for a long time. What a joy! This piece is a kind of supercut of a small portion of what was a pursuit of pure pleasure. Bill shot the images and I put them in a code blender. Ross Shafer made his mark creating a popular brand of mountain bikes, called Salsa, and a line of small but crucial bicycle parts that no one had brought to the market before. Now he's making what might be the world's most beautiful “pedal steel guitar.” Could Shafer's relentless eclecticism offer a model for a second Renaissance?"From bicycles to “pedal steel” guitars: One maker's quirky frontiers" originally appeared in the Summer 2016 issue of Craftsmanship Quarterly, a multimedia, online magazine about artisans, innovators, and the architecture of excellence. What we covered:The fear of failure can be your biggest struggle and your best allyThe importance of failure and why giving up isn't an option. Why belief in yourself is your biggest weapon against difficulties and adversities. Why happiness shouldn't be the end goal. How important motivation can be when you want to know what it's like to succeed. The importance of having a strong mindset, especially when you're just starting out.Tweetable Quotes:“I love being happy as much as the next person does. But if you set happiness as your goal, you're setting yourself up for failure. The key is fulfillment, not happiness.”“People aren't afraid of failing so much that they're being afraid of being a failure.”“All people need is permission. They just need somebody to go “yeah, go ahead. You can do this.”“Once you realize that failure doesn't mean that you're a failure, it gives people the license to act more broadly”“It can be a little overwhelming. But if you take things really slow again, just starting out real simple (and) childlike.. You'll find it immediately..“Learning is a lot of failures.”Links Mentioned:Kurt's TwitterKurt's InstagramKurt's LinkedInJoshua GrangeAaron EmbryConor OberstK.D LangLex PriceNatasha BedingfieldNick CaveRobert RandolphTemple GrandinTodd HanniganThe Echo GuildGuitar Institute of Technology (GIT)The Joshua Tree InnTiny BuddhaThe New York TimesThe Red Hand File

Devon Teran plays the sweet and dusty sounds of America's Crossroad Kansas City. On pedal steel and guitar, he is equally layered and melodic, as likely to compose sparse layers as walls of screaming noise. Devon Teran is a founding member of Timbers. He also supports several artists including Marty Bush, AM Merker, Kristin Hamilton, David Luther and others. . In Today's episode, Devon breaks down how the reality of an artist is not to be the best but to move people. He shares his journey of collaborating with multiple bands and stepping into a new phase of his music career. We also talk about self-development, pursuing music with a day job, and raising a family in the midst of the music industry. This episode we talk about finding parking and tips for those looking to invest in property in the neighborhood. Featured musical guest Isaac Stanford talks about his musical project Slowey & the Boats and life as a lap/ pedal steel player in Philadelphia.
Pedal Steel veteran Nathan Guilford (Buddy South, Modulated Spiral Groove) takes a spin, luck listener. Nathan and Dan talk about the history and evolution of the steel guitar, from Hawaii to Rusty Young to Robert Randolph. Nathan and Dan break down Randy's breakout hit, Mama Told Me Not to Come. Starting with the Animals, the song passes through Ry Cooder, Three Dog Night, and then some very surprising (some would say disturbing) covers. Then we spin the Wheel and both try to say something nice about the love theme to "Overboard." Thanks Nathan! Keep of rockin. And coutryin.
