Maaaaan this is a big one for me as I have been a fan of MOJOE for many years, and when we sat down to do this they informed me that I had never interviewed them before. Which is something I can't even fathom given the amount of times I have seen them live and how much I have listened to them and such. But I guess that is the case and this edition of Talk So Real is my first real talk with two of my favorites. MOJOE was a walking revolution from San Antonio back in the day. A live band hip hop experience that had it all and could not be questioned. The title of their Classic.Ghetto.Soul album summed it all up, and after a bit of a hiatus (in which rapper Easy Lee started a group called Third Root with MexStep and DJ Chicken George) they are back with a new album about to drop called Ancient Future Soul, which also sums things up. The guys played the record for me and a few other good folks and then we sat down to do the interview in the lovely upstairs portion of Simona's Coffee Bar in the Colton House Hotel on South Congress here in Austin. It really went down as they say. Word to Raf. On this episode we discuss such things as Beyonce and Solange's father Matthew Knowles signing them, Sun Ra, Johnna Lister, why sometimes people including myself and themselves need a hiatus, real soul music, Texas music, the game, we cover a lot of things and I think you will enjoy this one. Please tell a friend to tell a friend to dial into this Talk So Real movement, and thank you so much for your support.

Charles “Easy Lee” Peters (@thirdrootmusic) joined us in Episode 17 Easy is a poet, songwriter, MC, and Educator. We begin at the start of his musical career- fusing southern raps with timeless soul music, and his time touring the nation as a member of a signed group, Mo’Joe. From this point we discuss various ups, and downs that lead Easy to a passionate, and ultimately championed path in education. Finally we arrive at Easy’s current work with Third Root, a project he co-founded with Marco Cervantes (MexStep). We cover their progression, and how they found their sound working with an array of renowned musicians, and producers. We summarize by acknowleding Easy’s persistance, and how he accomplished a union between his passion for music, and possibly an even greater purpose- as an activist, teacher, and an inspiration. Third Root and Adrian Quesada present a powerful composition that pays tribute to the Justice or Else Million Man March Anniversary taking place in D.C. on 10.10.15. The track combines a riot starting beat, charging live instruments, and socially focused lyrics that bring to mind the work of Public Enemy and dead prez. The content of the track is rooted in conversations the band has had with Sis. Yonasda Lonewolf Hill and lectures that Minister Louis Farrakhan has been giving during his recent Justice or Else tour. Third Root is Charles "Easy Lee" Peters, Dr. Marco "Mexstep" Cervantes and DJ Chicken George. Third Root is a Hip-Hop project that consists of Charles Peters (Easy Lee of MoJoe) & Marco Cervantes (Mexican StepGrandfather). Peters is an accomplished poet/author/MC, and Cervantes is a producer/MC/Ph.D. professor in Mexican American Studies at the University of Texas at San Antonio. They joined forces to craft "Stand For Something", an album that focuses on the history and healing of black and brown communities. In high school, DJ CG and Marco were in a hip-hop group (Wasted Youth) with CG's brother Jerry and best friend Charles. Fast forward two decades, DJ CG reunites with his lifelong friend Mexican StepGrandfather and Easy Lee to present Third Root's newest collaboration, Third Root X DJ Chicken George - Mind Elevation and also announce CG's inclusion as Third Root's deejay. To mark the beginning of my new podcast series I've decided to offer up a DJ mix I recorded way back in 2003. "Ash Gardens" was the name of the street I lived on in Headingley during my first year at uni in 03/04. My musical influences at the time were parties such as Technique, Asylum and Basics. This shows in my track selection. You can see some "minimal" influences creeping in with Villalobos' track "Easy Lee" and some tech house courtesy of Steve Bug with "Okoubaka" as well as some Basics style dubby acidic house from The Lip Trick (Si Baker). There is also a few electro tracks in there such as "Come In To My Kitchen" by Joakim. The mix was recorded using 2 x 1200's, 1 x CDJ1000, 1 x Allen & Heath Xone:32 and an EFX500 FX unit..... ENJOY
