Do I need to make myself smaller to make the man I love feel bigger? Or am I simply with a man who can't handle the woman I've become? For generations, women were told the ideal man was the alpha male — successful, dominant, powerful, protective and very definitely the one leading the relationship. But what happens when she's the successful one? This week on Uncut & Uncensored, Caroline is joined by Sergio for a very personal — and predictably unfiltered — conversation about the rise of the “hype husband” and why a man proudly standing behind a powerful woman might actually be the ultimate sign of confidence. From husbands taking the photos and carrying the handbags to men openly celebrating their wives' careers, more women in the spotlight are showing the partners who help make their success possible. But does supporting a powerful woman make a man less masculine — or does it take an incredibly secure man to do it?Caroline and Sergio know this conversation better than most. They get into male ego, successful women, money in marriage, age-gap relationships, masculinity, who really wears the trousers, supporting your partner's career, building businesses together and what happens when a woman earns more than her husband. So maybe we've been defining the alpha male incorrectly all along.Maybe the strongest man in the room isn't the one who needs to be more successful, earn more money or get more attention than his wife.Maybe it's the man confident enough to watch her shine and think: “That's my wife.”Subscribe to Uncut & Uncensored with Caroline Stanbury for more conversations about marriage, sex, money, confidence, ageing, relationships and all the questions women are really asking themselves at 2AM. Keith Reza sits down with actress Karen Cliche for a fun, wide-ranging conversation that moves from horror movies and Hollywood stories to real-life fears, career pivots, family, and the strange things that stay with us from childhood. Karen talks about her new movie The Ice Cream Man and what it was like acting opposite Eli Roth while he was also directing. She shares how that creative dynamic worked on set, how they built believable parents for the film, and why grounding horror in recognizable family energy makes the chaos hit harder. The conversation also revisits Karen's work in Thanksgiving and Saw VI, including the physical demands of horror performances and how imagination plays a huge role in selling fear on screen. Beyond film, Karen opens up about life between Canada and Los Angeles, being in the process of applying for a U.S. work visa, her thoughts on fame at conventions, food, health-conscious pizza experiments, protecting kids from exploitation, and even a wild detour into pyramid theories. It's funny, candid, and packed with the kind of unexpected tangents that make Reza Rifts such an entertaining listen. Guest Info Karen Cliche is a Canadian actress known for roles in The Ice Cream Man, Thanksgiving, Saw VI, and Mutant X. She has worked across horror, television, and thriller projects for years and brings both humor and honesty to conversations about acting, filmmaking, and life in the industry. This month, on Laura Flanders & Friends, we're taking a closer look at criminal justice—through the lens of abolition, accountability, and the power of the creative arts to tell fuller, truer stories. This week we'll explore a new documentary, CYCLE, that's breaking the silence around police killings. Subscribe to Laura on Substack: https://lauraflanders.substack.com/ Description: Would we know from our media that over 1,000 people are killed by police every year in the U.S.? The stories of George Floyd and Breonna Taylor are exceptions, but for the victims we don't hear about, there's CYCLE. The newly-released investigative feature documentary from LionArt Media focuses on the 2019 killing of Ty'rese West, an 18-year-old Black teenager from Racine, Wisconsin who was shot to death after being pulled over by a Mount Pleasant police officer for riding a bicycle with no headlights. No videos were taken, the details of West's death were withheld from the community and the subsequent police report. Made in close collaboration with West's mother, Monique West, the film follows the story of Ty'rese's death and the lawsuit that ensued. CYCLE is an invitation, “. . . to interrupt the silence that follows so many cases that never go viral — cases where there's no footage, no public pressure, and no accountability,” say director Laura Dyan Kezman and co-director William Howell, both Racine natives. Kezman is an award-winning director, DP, and editor, and the founder of LionArt Media committed to telling bold, socially driven stories that examine justice, culture, and civic engagement. Howell is a cinematographer, editor, and director based in Milwaukee. He was the cinematographer of ‘The Rise and Fall of Coo Coo Cal' and the director of the 2020 film ‘You Don't Know Me'. Join the CYCLE directors and Laura Flanders for this powerful conversation on police accountability and community action, plus a commentary on the media quiet about Trump's massive military build-up in the Caribbean. “. . . We started this film in 2019 with the intention of not making an angry film, but we didn't quite know what the film needed to be yet. Then COVID hit, Ahmaud Arbery was killed, and then Breonna Taylor was killed, and then George Floyd was killed . . . We felt it then, that this was something so much bigger than us in terms of us telling Tyrese's story in that moment.” - Laura Dyan Kezman “The call to action, that's when I see, more than anything, that we achieved our goal. People are not leaving these theaters angry . . . They're leaving and saying, what can we do? What can I do? What can we do together as people to help create this change?” - William Howell Guests: • William Howell: Co-Director, CYCLE • Laura Dyan Kezman: Director, Editor & Producer, CYCLE Full Conversation Release: While our weekly shows are edited to time for broadcast on Public TV and community radio, we offer to our members and podcast subscribers the full uncut conversation. If I know deep down that I want more… am I brave enough to risk the life I have to find out what else is possible? What if you know you want more from your life — more happiness, more money, more passion, more freedom — but you're terrified that going after it could cost you everything you already have? This week on Uncut & Uncensored, Caroline sits down with bestselling author and spiritual teacher Gabby Bernstein for an honest conversation about manifestation — but not the light a candle and wait for a Ferrari kind.Gabby explains why manifesting isn't simply about asking the universe for what you want. It's about changing the beliefs that may be stopping you from believing you can have it in the first place.Together, Caroline and Gabby get into the questions so many women are quietly asking themselves: Am I allowed to want more? What if I leave and regret it? What if I start again and fail? What if I've become too comfortable? And what if the life I've worked so hard to build isn't actually the life I want anymore? They dive deep into money and abundance, imposter syndrome, menopause, hormones, sex and intimacy, sexless marriages, self-worth, comparison, relationships and why women find it so difficult to put themselves first. This isn't about blowing up your life tomorrow. It's about asking yourself whether you're making decisions from fear — or possibility.Because maybe getting the life you want isn't about manifesting harder.Maybe it starts with finally believing you're allowed to have it.And if this conversation has left you thinking, “I know I'm ready for something more, I just don't know what comes next,” then perhaps it's time to give yourself the space to find out. This November, Caroline is bringing a carefully selected group of women together on a private island in the Maldives for the next Stanbury Retreat — four days away from the noise, expectations and everyday responsibilities to focus entirely on you, what you want, and the chapter you want to create next. If you feel like you're at a turning point in your life, apply now to join Caroline in the Maldives, 14–17 November 2026.[APPLY FOR THE MALDIVES RETREAT HERE]Subscribe to Uncut & Uncensored with Caroline Stanbury for more honest conversations about relationships, money, confidence, ageing, reinvention and the questions women are really asking themselves at 2AM. This month, on Laura Flanders & Friends, we turn to the state of journalism—at a moment of deep disruption, consolidation, and consequence. But journalists aren't simply standing by—they're pushing back, reimagining their work, and, in many cases, taking matters into their own hands. This week we'll hear from the long-running independent collective Third World Newsreel, still thriving in an era some are calling “media carnage,” showing what it looks like to endure—and to resist. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate Description: It's almost unheard of for an independent media collective to survive as long as Third World Newsreel has. Since 1968, they have chronicled some of the most pivotal movements in human history and continue to expand on their collection of over 700 titles. There's lots to learn about how they've adapted through technological revolutions, political persecutions, philanthropic booms and busts — and how the oldest media arts collective in the U.S. is making do in today's “media carnage”, as Laura Flanders puts it. Joining us are JT Takagi, an independent filmmaker, sound recordist, and the longtime executive director of Third World Newsreel. Tami Gold is an artist and activist whose documentaries grapple with everything from imperialism to sex work. Her films include My Country Occupied, Another Brother and Land Rain Fire among many more. Puerto Rican-born Juan Carlos Dávila works in film as well as TV, where he reports on social movements around environmentalism, militarism and the struggles of the working class on the island. His films include The Stand-By Generation, Viequez: An Endless Battle and Drills of Liberation. Join us as we look at the past, present and future of Third World Newsreel and ask how film can be used as a tool for organizing. “I'd say we feel more urgent now than ever before. Every day there's something happening that makes it clear that our rights and liberties, and people's lives all over the world are at stake. Not being in touch with the history and media that shows the truth of what's going on is really decimating people's ability to, as Juan said, know what to follow and what to do.” - JT Takagi “We need to retake the theater, the physical space that is being ignored by the corporations. Perhaps now that is the opportunity that we have . . . A theater is being rented by people who are organizers, and they're using their collective spirit and know-how to organize huge, huge crowds to come.” - Tami Gold “People can shoot stuff with the phone . . . I see a lot in Puerto Rico that people are still wanting to produce with the corporate industry standards. Many young filmmakers like myself tend to think that we need so many personnel to be doing films. Right now we can actually make films with less.” - Juan Carlos Dávila Guests: • Juan Carlos Dávila: Documentary Filmmaker, Multimedia Journalist, Puerto Rico Correspondent, Democracy Now! • Tami Gold: Filmmaker, Artist, Activist • JT Takagi: Executive Director, Third World Newsreel Watch on YouTube this episode that includes video clips referenced in this episode from Third World Newsreel; PBS World Channel 11:30am ET Sundays and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). A three-and-a-half-hour epic can be gorgeous and still leave you arguing in the parking lot. That's exactly what happened after we watched Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey, so we sat down for a full roundtable review with Jeremy, Michael, Mario Andrew, and James St. Simon to sort out what we loved, what we questioned, and what the film might be saying underneath the spectacle.[CONTAINS SPOILERS]• quick ratings and first reactions from readers and non-readers of Homer• whether an adaptation can be judged apart from its source material• why characterization matters more than plot changes• casting choices that distract from ancient Greece and break suspension of disbelief• the medium problem of turning an oral epic into a nonlinear film narrative• pacing, structure, and why a trilogy might help or hurt• the removal of the gods and the shift toward a secular psychological journey• an Orthodox Christian way to “take the nectar” from Greek myth• virtue themes, fidelity, and why the love story feels cleaner on screen• standout scenes like the sirens motif, the dog recognition, the Trojan horse claustrophobia, and “people from the sea”• Athena's beheading image, war guilt, justice, and the Dark Knight question of who carries the costWe start with honest first impressions from both Odyssey readers and people seeing the story fresh. Then we dig into the hardest question any film adaptation faces: can you evaluate it as a stand-alone movie when the source material is one of the pillars of Western literature? Along the way, we compare what works in beloved adaptations like The Lord of the Rings with what fails when writing and characterization drift too far. We also talk about pacing, Nolan's nonlinear storytelling, and why some viewers feel the film is rushed while others feel locked in the whole time. The biggest friction point is authenticity and immersion. We debate casting choices, modern cultural incentives, and why even a strong performance can break the spell when you keep noticing the actor instead of the character. From there we move into the deeper critique: the film's largely secular approach. Homer's Odyssey is infused with the gods, cosmic order, and reverence, but Nolan's version leans toward psychological guilt, war scars, and the modern theme that “the enemy is us.” As a Christian podcast, we ask what that shift costs, and how an Orthodox Christian approach can still “take the nectar” from Greek literature, pulling out virtue while leaving the rest.If you care about Christopher Nolan films, Homer's Odyssey, Greek mythology, or the moral questions around war, justice, and homecoming, this conversation is for you. Am I waiting to feel confident before I start living like the woman I want to become?Does the way you look actually change the way you perform — and could getting dressed be one of the most underrated tools for confidence and success? In this episode of Uncut & Uncensored, Caroline gets honest about image, money, confidence, ageing and reinvention. After losing almost everything and rebuilding her life, businesses and identity, Caroline asks an uncomfortable question: does looking successful actually help you become more successful?Dress as the woman you want to become before you've fully become her, why women are still judged differently as they age, the pressure to "dress your age," working from home without letting yourself disappear, and why confidence is sometimes something you put on until you remember it was yours all along. If you've been waiting for the promotion, the money, the body, the relationship or the "right time" to finally show up as her — this episode is your reminder:Wear the dress. Book the flight. Enter the room. Stop saving your best self for later. And if you're ready to put yourself in a room with women who are doing exactly that, join Caroline this November for the Maldives Private Island Retreat. In this episode of The Dirt on Flowers, Lynds and Shannon answer listener questions about growing flowers, running a flower farm, and making money throughout the year. They talk about embracing weeds and finding a realistic “weed tolerance,” along with their favorite spring and summer color palettes for bouquets. They also dive into ways flower farmers can create income beyond the growing season, including subscriptions, workshops, dried flowers, holiday sales, and forcing bulbs. The conversation gets plenty of laughs with some of the “dumb shit” they've found on the internet, including a very specific dahlia-related invention. They also share what they're experimenting with to continue supporting their community after DirtCon, including a fun walkie-talkie-style app.Be in the know for DirtCon 2027If you want to dive in deeper with us each month, join our membership group - The Dirt on Flowers Insiders! This month, on Laura Flanders & Friends, we turn to the state of journalism—at a moment of deep disruption, consolidation, and consequence. But journalists aren't simply standing by—they're pushing back, reimagining their work, and, in many cases, taking matters into their own hands. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate Description: Journalism is at an inflection point. Under a hail of lawsuits, firings, new hires, and mercenary mergers, the business of media is in shambles even as the need for reliable, truthful information to reach voters is greater than ever. Where does that leave journalists? In this episode, Laura and her guests discuss the money media's dangerous denials and obfuscations, the problem with bothsidesism in a time of fascism, and the coverage of Renee Good's killing in Minneapolis. Dean Obeidallah is a lawyer, writer, award-winning comedian and host of SiriusXM radio's national daily program “The Dean Obeidallah Show”. Joy Reid, formerly host of the award-winning ReidOut on MSNBC, is a best-selling author, and host of the Joy Reid Show on YouTube. The decline of legacy media isn't all bad news — especially for those, like Palestinians and others, who were always shut out of it — and the rise of independent platforms, savvy media consumers and new mechanisms for collaboration just might usher in a new age of great journalism, just when we need it. Join Dean, Joy and Laura for this rich conversation on resistance, reporting, and survival. [This conversation was recorded on January 14, 2026] “What I would like corporate media to understand, their job is not to make money for shareholders and executives to get bonuses, but serve the people, make them smarter, even if it means losing access. I know that's a lot to ask, but that's what I would like because an educated, informed electorate is the key to saving this republic.” - Dean Obeidallah “It is a crime against journalism for the editorial director of a news network to say our job is not to deliver the news, but to go viral. That's crazy.”- Joy Reid Guests: • Dean Obeidallah: Host of SiriusXM radio's The Dean Obeidallah Show • Joy Reid: Host of The Joy Reid Show Watch the episode released on YouTube; PBS World Channel 11:30am ET Sundays and on over 300 public stations across the country (check your listings, or search here via zipcode). This month, on Laura Flanders & Friends, we turn to the state of journalism—at a moment of deep disruption, consolidation, and consequence. But journalists aren't simply standing by—they're pushing back, reimagining their work, and, in many cases, taking matters into their own hands. This week we explore whether worker-owned media might offer a path forward, as reporters and editors respond to industry collapse by building new models rooted in accountability and collective power. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to LauraFlanders.org/donate Description: The business of media is in danger — but it sure isn't dead. Many of the rising stars that were poised to “save journalism” like Vice and Buzzfeed have either entered bankruptcy or stopped reporting on news. There have been layoffs across the industry and many newsrooms have cut back on the resources available to journalists. But workers have also organized unions, including high-profile campaigns at Condé Nast and The New Yorker, and started worker-owned media like Hell Gate and Defector. This month on “Meet the BIPOC Press”, Laura Flanders is joined by three journalists who have lived through the struggles and are a part of the solutions. Alex Sujong Laughlin is a supervising producer and co-owner at Defector; Esther Wang is a worker-owner at Hell Gate; and Tammy Kim helped organize unions at Al Jazeera America and The New Yorker, where she is a contributing writer. How do they think about the future of journalism, and what difference does it make when journalists have the freedom to speak truth to power — especially when it comes to reporting on policing and Palestine? Guests: • Tammy Kim: Contributing Writer, The New Yorker; Contributing Editor, Lux Magazine • Alex Sujong Laughlin: Supervising Producer & Co-Owner, Defector Media • Esther Wang: Co-Founder, Hell Gate; Former Senior Political Reporter, Jezebel Note- Full Conversation Release: While our weekly shows are edited to time for broadcast on Public TV and community radio, we offer to our members and podcast subscribers the full uncut conversation.
