Chicago blues musician, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater, spoke with Carol from the Test of Time. Clearwater talks about the Chicago blues scene, his Cherokee heritage, and the good fortune of his first headdress. At 83, Clearwater shows no sign of slowing down. He's working on songs for a new album and planning a European tour this year.
Merry Christmas 'CastFans and welcome to yet another explorative episode in the world of Amps and Axes. In this installment, the guys bring you a player who more than qualifies as an elder-statesman in the music we know as The Blues. Coming up in Chicago, he befriended and shared stages with Blues legends like Otis Rush, Magic Sam and Muddy Waters. Making his own mark on the music scene with his upside-down, left-handed- strung right handed style of playing, he has toured the world, so please help us welcome Chicago Blues legend and Alligator recording artist , Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater. Enjoy!
Blues veteran Albert Castiglia has the privilege of being able to say he cut his teeth as a member of the touring band for the late great Junior Wells before joining the Sandra Hall Band. Aside from Hall and Wells, Castiglia has shared stages with some of the greatest players in the genre like Pinetop Perkins, Phil Guy, Ronnie Earl, Billy Boy Arnold, John Primer, Lurrie Bell, Jerry Portnoy, Eddy "The Chief" Clearwater and Otis Clay, among others. He decided to take a shot as a solo artist around 2002 and never looked back; releasing nine albums to date including his latest to make waves, ‘Big Dog’ on Ruf Records which was produced by Blues pro Mike Zito and self-described as a “game changer.”
We actually started by speaking with Lisa Grissom from Tall City Blues Fest, a Music On The Couch Festival Partner. Lisa gave us a great overview of this year's lineup and events that occur during the festival. At the end, Talent Curator, Ronn Reeger, joined us to chat. Sugar Blue - a miscomunication between Sugar and I gave us no time to talk. We did play two songs and rescheduled Sugar to June 20th So Thrilled! A short two weeks after his induction in the Blues Hall Of Fame, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater came by and I had a great conversation about his growing up in Mississippi, moving to Chicago and his years of performing while we checked out tunes from Soul Funky. The Honey Island Swamp Band formed in California after Katrina had displaced the members, they have been making music over the last 10 years. Luther Dickinson produced their new album, Demolition Day. Aaron Wilkinson joined me to tell us his journey and the circumstances behind the band's formation. He also discussed the progression of the band's music over their first 5 allbums. Couch Kid New Music brought Bridget Kelly and Tim Fik back to The Couch to talk about their new album Outta The Blue. These two have become good friends and it was fun to share their new music about a week before the album releases.
