Ricky McKinnie, the leader of the Blind Boys of Alabama, was born and raised in Atlanta, where he got his start singing in the church alongside his mother. Not long after that, while still in his teens, he embarked on a career as a singer and a drummer, often performing with a band called the Soul Searchers. Around the age of 20, he began to lose his eyesight, but as Ricky says, he never lost his vision. After playing with the Blind Boys of Alabama from time to time, he became an official member of the group in 1989, and since then, in various roles, he's helped lead the band through years of success, fame, and Grammy Awards. Now the group is the subject of a fascinating new book called Spirit of the Century: Our Own Story. Sid talks to Ricky about why the Blind Boys have endured for so long, their hit version of “Amazing Grace,” what he's learned over decades as a blind musician, and the song that always gets the crowd out of their seats. The Blind Boys of Alabama are a legendary American gospel group founded in 1939 at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Deaf and Blind in Talladega, Alabama. Originally called the Happy Land Jubilee Singers, the group consisted of mostly visually impaired students who found solace and inspiration in singing together. The original members were Clarence Fountain (baritone), George Scott (baritone and guitarist), Johnny Fields (bass), Velma Traylor (tenor), and Olice Thomas (baritone). Though the lineup has changed throughout the years, with none of the original members remaining, the core mission of the Blind Boys of Alabama has stayed consistent: creating uplifting and powerful gospel music. The Blind Boys of Alabama are credited with pioneering a unique approach to gospel, incorporating elements of soul, blues, and R&B into their sound. Their music has resonated with audiences for decades, and they've achieved incredible success, including: Winning six Grammy Awards Being inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame and the Alabama Music Hall of Fame Receiving the National Heritage Fellowship from the National Endowment for the Arts The Blind Boys of Alabama have also collaborated with a wide range of artists from various genres, including Prince, Lou Reed, Peter Gabriel, Bonnie Raitt, and Ben Harper. Jimmy Carter (NOT the 39th U.S. president) is a legendary gospel singer and co-founder of The Blind Boys of Alabama. The group has been around for decades and they've just released their first album in six years, “Echoes of the South,” which is also the title of the first radio show they ever appeared on in the mid-1940s. Jimmy tells Tom about his love of gospel, what it was like touring in the south during segregation, and the advice he'd give to young musicians as he's just retired at 91 years old.
It's a bonus episode! Here's a little radio piece I made back in January to promote a Blind Boys of Alabama concert here in Olympia. The gospel singing group has been in existence since 1939 or so, with its members changing over time... you know, like Menudo, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band or the London Philharmonic. I spoke with Ricky McKinnie, who's been in the group since 1989. He tells me about his background in gospel music, his own experience of blindness, the group's latest Grammy nomination, and the ins and outs of a group that has been evolving for over three quarters of a century. Short and sweet, hope you like it!

Walk with me dear LordWalk with meWalk with me dear LordWalk with meOh Lord on this tedious journeyI want Jesus to walk with me …I heard that song on the AM station. Seems like it was the AM 1010 station WELS in Kinston NC - Andy & the HotFoot Club if I'm not mistaken. I remember him playing old songs & old sermons. I think it was in the 1990s. But I never knew the name of the group that sang the song. I searched high & I searched low, & your know old songs like that by singing groups can be hard to find. I asked myself, “ Is it the Five Blind Boys of Mississippi?” But it was not them. I knew it had to be an old group that had been singing for years. I asked myself, “How about the Five Blind Boys of Alabama?” Sure enough it was them. For some reason, I love the way they sing Jesus Walk With Me. The style sounds like country gospel. I love the instruments and how the band put the music together for the song. It sounds like a prayer, and I do need Jesus to walk with me. How about you? The Five Blind Boys of Alabama has done a great job singing Jesus Walk With Me. The group was founded in 1939 in Talladega Alabama. The group enjoyed even further exposure and success in 2000s. The Blind Boys of Alabama performed “Free At Last” at the White House on Feb. 9, 2010. In 2010, the Blind Boys were inducted into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame. The Blind Boys of Alabama have the rare distinction of being recognized around the world as both living legends and modern-day innovators. They are not just gospel singers borrowing from old traditions; the group helped to define those traditions in 20th century and almost single-handedly created a new gospel sound for the 21st. Since the original members first sang together as kids at the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind in the late 1930s (including Jimmy Carter, who leads the group today), the band has persevered through seven decades to become one of the most recognized and decorated roots music groups in the world.Touring throughout the South during the Jim Crow era of the 1940s and 1950s, the Blind Boys flourished thanks to their unique sound, which blended the close harmonies of early jubilee gospel with the more fervent improvisations of hard gospel. In the early 1960s, the band sang at benefits for Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and were a part of the soundtrack to the Civil Rights movement. But as the years passed, gospel fans started to drift away and follow the many singers who had originated in the church but were now recording secular popular music. And the Blind Boys, who refused many offers to ‘cross over' to secular music, also saw their audiences dwindle. However, the Blind Boys persevered and their time came again, starting in the 1980s with their starring role in the Obie Award-winning musical “The Gospel at Colonus,” which began a new chapter in their incredible history. It's almost unbelievable that a group of blind, African-American singers, who started out touring during a time of whites-only bathrooms, restaurants and hotels, went on to win five Grammy® Awards, a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, be inducted into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and to perform at the White House for three different presidents.Few would have expected them to still be going strong—stronger than ever, even—so many years after they first joined voices, but they've proved as productive and as musically ambitious in recent years as they did in the beginning. In 2001, they released Spirit of the Century on Peter Gabriel's Real World label, mixing traditional church tunes with songs by Tom Waits and the Rolling Stones, and won the first of their Grammy Awards. The next year they backed Gabriel on his album Up and joined him on a world tour, although a bigger break may have come when David Simon chose their cover of Waits' ‘Way Down in the Hole' as the theme song for the first season of HBO's acclaimed series The Wire. Subsequent Grammy-winning albums have found them working with the likes of Ben Harper, Robert Randolph, Aaron Neville, Mavis Staples, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Allen Toussaint and Willie Nelson. In 2013 the band worked with Justin Vernon (of Bon Iver) to release I'll Find A Way, a powerful collection of gospel and spiritual songs new and old, featuring some of the Blind Boys' most fervent vocals as well as contributions by a new generation of Blind Boys fans, including Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, Patty Griffin, and Justin Vernon himself. In 2014 the Blind Boys released Talkin' Christmas!, a collaboration with Taj Mahal, that continued the band's streak of creating original and interesting work. It includes new versions of Christmas standards, covers of hidden gospel gems, and seven brand-new holiday songs featuring Money Mark on keyboards, Taj Mahal on vocals and songwriting collaborations with Stax Records soul legend William Bell.
THE BLIND BOYS OF ALABAMA first rose to fame in the segregated south with their thrilling vocal harmonies and roof-raising live show. Their 70-year recording career would see them rack up five GRAMMY Awards (plus one for Lifetime Achievement), enter the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, collaborate with everyone from Mavis Staples and Stevie Wonder to Prince and Lou Reed, and perform on the world's most prestigious stages. From the Alabama Institute for the Negro Blind, where the original members met as children, all the way to The White House - where they've performed for three different presidents - the band's story is, in many ways, America's story, and that story is at the heart of their emotional new album, 'Almost Home. This week on the show, to help honor Black History Month, we bring you a conversation with members of the foundational gospel group The Blind Boys Of Alabama - including longtime singer Ricky McKinnie, and beloved senior member Jimmy Carter who has been with the group for four decades. Formed in the late 1930s with talent discovered at the Alabama Institute Of The Negro Blind, the troupe has superseded its limitations by bringing its own high-spirited version of jubilee gospel throughout the world. Their music was often the backdrop to the civil rights movement as Martin Luther King JR. toured the south, and Jimmy and Ricky are amazed and grateful that their message was still ringing true during the Black Lives Matter protest movement of the tumultuous last year. While the members of the band have changed through history, the group has stayed steadfast to preserving a kinetic church-based music that doesn't seek to evangelize, but can bring people of all faiths together. Indeed, watching Jimmy and the other bespectacled members walk with hands on each other's shoulders into the youthful crowds of adoring festival goers from Bonnarroo to Jazzfest is really something to behold. Their body of work continues to grow. In the last few decades they've gamely collaborated with a wide range of secular artists from Peter Gabriel to Ben Harper to Bonnie Raitt, made an album with Bon Iver (the stellar 2013 release I'll Find A Way) and shrewdly reworked the ominous Tom Waits classic “Way Down In The Hole” which became the theme for HBO's The Wire. Their newest full length Almost Home, a treatise on morality and mortality, is particularly moving. It features songs written by Marc Cohn, Valerie June, The North Mississippi All Stars and many others - and was the last record that longtime member and bandleader Clarance Fountain was a part of before he passed away. Fountain was part of the group for for nearly sixty years. As Jimmy playfully mentions throughout the conversation, they've never let being blind stand in the way of doing what they do best: putting on a show. They're entertainers at heart and it's so small feat that they've brought a nearly lost form of swinging, soulful (and expertly arranged) gospel from the small southern towns where they grew up, all the way to the White House, where they've held court for three different presidents. They've won five Grammy Awards along the way. Stick around to the end hear their rich cover of Bob Dylan's “I Shall Be Released”.

Mavis Staples continues to release acclaimed albums of protest soul music in her 80s, and a guitarist in one of the world's biggest bands puts out a solo record.
I am someone who, maybe like you, loves and at times lives for music. It carried me through countless troubled times. So now, during a global pandemic, and the second lockdown in my homeland of Ireland, I am going to make a series of podcasts singles in a series I call 'Music Puts Wings on the Human Spirt, " to quote Sinatra. One of the great joys of being a music interviewer is that now and then music acts sing or play a song for you, be it privately on tape or during a radio broadcast, and sometimes, as in the case of Leonard Cohen, they recite a song lyric for you, or sing part of a song. Either way what good are treasures if they are not shared? So here is a clip of the Five Blind Boys of Alabama blessing with an a live rendition of the old Golden Gate Quarter recording, Walk in Jerusalem Just Like John. Amen to that. I hope it raises your spirits
Two multi-instrumentalists blending American and Italian traditions, using hip hop as a tool for change in Papua New Guinea and the legendary gospel group The Blind Boys of Alabama. Recorded live on stage at WOMADelaide 2020, under the figs trees at Botanic Park.
My guest today is Mr. John Leventhal. John is a guitarist, songwriter and producer, having won 5 Grammys and 16 nominations for records he has produced. (I may be incorrect about this, it might actually be more…) As usual on the Riff Raff, I have “selfish” ulterior motives and tend to interview people who were influential to me as a guitarist/producer and John is at the top of that list. He was a big influence on the way I approach working with singers and in the studio. His uncoventional approachs to folk, country and rock/pop genres is hard to pin down and that's exactly why I like his sound so much. John is married to Roseanne Cash, an amazing singer/songwriter and the daughter of country legend Johnny Cash. (For this interview I get to play one of Johnny Cash's guitars!) In this interview we discuss guitars, producing, working with singers, songwriting, alternate tunings, his early career, “letting go” of preconceived ideas, the importance of good time, and much more. We also do quite a bit of playing and you get to hear John do his thing. There is some really great gems at the end so if you are a fan of John's we were really just getting going.... This interview took place on a snowy day at John's studio in New York City, March 2017.Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/the-riff-raff-with-shane-theriot/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
