​On August 4th, the Lake County Audubon Society says it banded three new piping plover chicks in Waukegan. and named them Pebbles, Drifter and Dune. ​Now, the Audubon Society says the chicks have died, and likely were the victims of predators, though it's impossible to know for sure without locating the bodies. Volunteers knew where to watch for the new chicks, and they all disappeared sequentially. The first day, monitors only found two plovers. The next, there was only one. The day after that, no chicks were around. The piping plover chicks' father Pepper now is flying alone in Waukegan, and soon may start his journey south to his wintering grounds in Florida.

Michael Zentner has followed a fairly normal career path in the restaurant industry, but in many ways has had an unusual level of success. He started by washing dishes in restaurants in his native Rhode Island and then attended The Culinary Institute of America before working in restaurants in Idaho, Boston, and Washington, D.C., including a stint with chef and restaurateur Michael Schlow.He moved to Charleston, South Carolina, to be closer to his wife Courtney's family, cooking at Charleston Grill under chef Michael Weaver. That came to an end with the pandemic, and the Zentners started a catering and event business called The Drifter. In 2025, they decided to open a restaurant and found an 1820s townhouse that he turned into a 24-seat restaurant called Merci. The signature dish is Beef Wellington, but Zentner also celebrates the bounty of the region by cooking with the local produce. It's open just four days a week and is always busy. Australian-born, California-raised Rob Machado is known for many things, but perhaps most of all he's known for making it look easy. After an accomplished amateur career, Machado, a member of the New School generation, joined the world tour in 1993. He rose to second overall in 1995, the year he famously high-fived Kelly Slater in the semifinals of the Pipe Masters with the title on the line. He finished in the top 16 in following years, including number three in 2000, the same year he won the Pipe Masters.  But a broken wrist caused him to drop to 46th in 2001. He hoped to get the injury wild card into the 2002 season. But he didn't. At the time, after almost a decade on the world tour and numerous event wins, it felt like a slight. Now it looks like divine intervention. Machado set off on the path that he's been on for the last 20-plus years. Free surfing. Board exploration. Far-flung travel. One of the world's best surfers unshackled from the constraints of competition and let loose. Machado's been featured in many surf films, including Momentum in 1992, What's Next? in 1996, Thicker Than Water in 1999, Shelter in 2001, and The Drifter in 2009. He founded the Rob Machado Surf Classic in 1997. He's thrown the first pitch at more than one Padres game. He's jammed onstage with Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson. The list goes on and on. This is a fun episode, y'all. Nick Petrie received his MFA in fiction from the University of Washington and won a Hopwood Award for short fiction while an undergraduate at the University of Michigan. His story “At the Laundromat” won the 2006 Short Story Contest in The Seattle Review, and his  first novel, The Drifter, won the ITW Thriller and Barry Awards. It was also nominated for Edgar, Anthony, and Hammett Awards. He won the 2016 Literary Award from the Wisconsin Library Association and was named one of Apple's 10 Writers to Read in 2017. Light It Up was named the Best Thriller of 2018 by Apple Books. Light it Up, The Wild One and The Price You Pay were shortlisted for the Barry Award. A husband and father, he has worked as a carpenter, remodeling contractor, and building inspector.  He lives in Milwaukee, where he is hard at work on the next Peter Ash novel.
