What does it really mean to push an industry forward without losing sight of the people climbing on your walls? On this episode of the Impact Driver Podcast, host Holly Chen invited Rylan Marshall-Meistrich (he/him) into the studio to hear his answer. Rylan has been climbing since 2004 and setting since 2005, starting out at ROCK'n & JAM'n (now The Spot Thornton), one of Colorado's earliest climbing gyms. He then worked at Planet Granite in San Francisco and a stint in Tahoe before returning to Colorado in 2017 as head setter at Movement Boulder. Now, Rylan is Movement's Colorado Director of Setting. With nearly two decades of setting experience, Rylan has set at nearly every discipline of USA Climbing nationals and holds a USAC Level 5 certification. Outside the gym, he runs a small recording studio in his basement and has been playing music since middle school—a side of him that shows up more in his setting philosophy than you might expect. General Topics Covered What is a routesetter's job, really?  Setting for your audience: from professional athletes to the birthday party room Setting for yourself: when it can serve the climber and when it only serves yourself The fine line between creativity versus usability The impermanence problem: why routesetting innovation often has to happen slowly and what that means for setters trying to push the envelope  How trends move through the industry and the difference between duplication and emulation  The difference between vertical and lateral career progression in routesetting  The USAC pipeline, online presence, and how setters are building reputations in a more competitive field Where competition bouldering is heading, and an honest reckoning with what experience actually means with a long career Show Notes Movement Gyms Colorado Necessity Breeds Invention – the Impact Driver Podcast with Andy Nelson On Eye-Pro, Ugly Boulders, and Influencers – the Impact Driver Podcast with Kegan Minock Lessons From the Sharp End of Modern Setting – the Impact Driver Podcast with Mike Bockino Steal Like an Artist: 10 Things Nobody Told You About Being Creative by Austin Kleon Born from the Climbing Life: Episode 4—Drifter's Escape—The World's Hardest Trad Climb Closing Notes If you'd like to nominate someone as a guest next guest, have a topic you want to see us tackle or have questions, we'd love for you to reach out. The Surfer’s Journal presents Soundings with Jamie Brisick

Australian-born, California-raised Rob Machado is known for many things, but perhaps most of all he's known for making it look easy. After an accomplished amateur career, Machado, a member of the New School generation, joined the world tour in 1993. He rose to second overall in 1995, the year he famously high-fived Kelly Slater in the semifinals of the Pipe Masters with the title on the line. He finished in the top 16 in following years, including number three in 2000, the same year he won the Pipe Masters.  But a broken wrist caused him to drop to 46th in 2001. He hoped to get the injury wild card into the 2002 season. But he didn't. At the time, after almost a decade on the world tour and numerous event wins, it felt like a slight. Now it looks like divine intervention. Machado set off on the path that he's been on for the last 20-plus years. Free surfing. Board exploration. Far-flung travel. One of the world's best surfers unshackled from the constraints of competition and let loose. Machado's been featured in many surf films, including Momentum in 1992, What's Next? in 1996, Thicker Than Water in 1999, Shelter in 2001, and The Drifter in 2009. He founded the Rob Machado Surf Classic in 1997. He's thrown the first pitch at more than one Padres game. He's jammed onstage with Eddie Vedder and Jack Johnson. The list goes on and on. In this episode of Soundings, Machado talks with Jamie Brisick about stepping away from competition, unlocking states of bliss in the water, the peak moments of his career, desire, creativity in surfing, and his high-five with Kelly Slater in the channel at Pipe. Presented by Rainbow® Sandals. Produced by Jonathan Shifflett. Music by PazKa (Aska Matsumiya & Paz Lenchantin). Become a TSJ member at surfersjournal.com.

The Drifter is a gritty, story-driven point-and-click adventure developed by the indie studio Powerhoof, led primarily by Dave Lloyd alongside artist Barney Cumming. It blends mystery, suspense, and sharp writing into a modern take on a classic genre. With its striking pixel art and cinematic pacing, the game feels like a love letter to the golden age of 80s and 90s adventure games—revived through today's indie scene. We loved diving into its dark, layered narrative and seeing how it brings new life to a style of storytelling that still holds up when done this well.Stick around until the end for a live point-and-click adventure game.Safe travels, nomads.

One of the top choices for shoppers on a budget, Benjamin has found out that things aren't as cheap as they used to be—but that doesn't mean the Chevy is bad, does it? Maybe it just depends on where you're buying, as prices vary significantly when you cross the border. Also is a 1.2L turbo three-cylinder engine enough for keeping up with traffic? Benjamin has all the details. Then the show goes into some big-screen talk, as Benjamin recently interviewed Sung Kang, one of the stars of The Fast and The Furious franchise, as he prepares his new movie Drifter for release. Sung Kang talked about his first car, cars on set, and more to Benjamin who relays it all to you deal listener. Thanks for listening!

Joe Gauvain - is an active-duty Chief in the United States Coast Guard and the co-founder of Drifter Hydration, an innovative hydration system built for the toughest environments on earth. Throughout his Coast Guard career, Joe has been stationed in multiple locations around the globe, spending much of his service in the rugged, unforgiving terrain & seas of the northwest and Alaska, where resilience, preparedness, and durability are not optional—they're survival. An avid outdoorsman and dedicated backcountry hunter, Joe has spent years pushing deep into remote wilderness, often hunting animals at high altitude in some of the harshest conditions imaginable. Through those experiences, he repeatedly encountered the limitations and failures of traditional hydration systems used by hunters, mountaineers, and expedition travelers. Drawing from his operational experience in the Coast Guard and countless days in the backcountry, Joe helped develop what would become the Drifter Hydration System—a rugged, durable alternative to the traditional water bladder. Built to withstand extreme environments, the system has quickly become a trusted tool for serious backcountry hunters, mountaineers, and outdoor athletes who demand reliability when they're far from civilization. Joe Gauvain joins Bobby Marshall in studio on The Mountain Side Podcast to talk about life in the Coast Guard & what led him to join the US Coast Guard, operating in Alaska, backcountry hunting, innovation in the outdoor industry, and how hard-earned lessons in the wild helped shape a product that's redefining hydration for those who truly like to get after it. Musician and author of White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story, Sean Kelley and Continental Drifter and Guitar player of The Bangles, Vicki Peterson are my guests for episode 1428. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story follows ten disparate musicians from humble beginnings at a dive bar residency in Los Angeles through lineup changes, addiction, marriages, divorces, and industry letdowns. The Continental Drifters, composed of members of The Bangles, The Cowsills, The Dream Syndicate, The dB's, and more, found each because they'd been burned by the music industry and sought refuge in a freewheeling environment where they could experiment without constraint. When everything fell apart in New Orleans a decade later, they ended up with so much more. White Noise & Lightning: The Continental Drifters Story Drops next Friday, Sept. 27 along with We're All Drifters: A Tribute To The Continental Drifters, a 2 CD tribute album featuring Marshall Crenshaw, Kim Richey, Rosie Flores and more. Find the book HERE. We have a great conversation about the book, the journey of the Continental Drifters and more. I had a blast getting to know Vicki and Sean. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Welcome to part two of my drifter vs. driven presentation. This is where everything clicks—and where things get uncomfortable in the best way possible. In part one, I helped you recognize where drifting starts and why so many people feel stuck even though they're working hard. In this episode, I walk you through how driven people actually break free from those patterns. This isn't a hype talk. This is about identity, belief, and the internal systems that quietly control your behavior. I share the frameworks I've used in wrestling, business, and life to move forward when fear, resistance, and old habits try to pull you back. If you've ever felt like you know you're capable of more but can't quite access it, this episode will show you why. Key Highlights: ◼️Why the most powerful driven identity you can adopt is becoming the learner—and why it's completely anti-fragile ◼️How clarifying your values creates real motivation instead of relying on willpower ◼️Why having a definite purpose is the true dividing line between drifters and driven people ◼️How resistance is proof you're on the right path, not a sign to stop ◼️Why rules, standards, and guardrails matter more than motivation ◼️The only belief that truly matters—and why you don't need talent, luck, or special gifts to win Drifting doesn't happen because you're lazy or broken. It happens because unconscious patterns are running your life. In this episode, I show you how to surface those patterns, replace them with faith-driven systems, and start moving forward on purpose. If part one helped you see where you've been drifting, part two gives you the framework to become driven. Listen closely—because once you understand this, it becomes almost impossible to keep playing small. ◼️If you've got a product, offer, service… or idea… I'll show you how to sell it (the RIGHT way) Register for my next event → https://sellingonline.com/podcast ◼️Still don't have a funnel? Most people don't fail because they lack talent, opportunity, or intelligence. They fail because they drift. In this special midnight mastermind session recorded live at Mastermind in Paradise, I share a concept I've been wrestling with for years: the difference between drifters and the driven. This isn't a motivational talk. It's a deep psychological breakdown of why so many capable people stall out—and how a subtle habit of drifting quietly takes control of nearly every area of life. This is Part one of a two-part series, and it's where I trace this idea back to Napoleon Hill's Outwitting the Devil. I break down the forces of fear, faith, and hypnotic rhythm, and how they shape your decisions long before you're even aware of them. If you've ever felt busy but not progressing, committed but stuck, this episode will help you see exactly where your momentum breaks—and how to start taking it back. Key Highlights: ◼️What “drifting” really means and why Napoleon Hill believed it controlled 98% of people ◼️How fear works at the subconscious level to sabotage decisions before you consciously make them ◼️The difference between faith-driven action and fear-based hesitation ◼️Why habits—not circumstances—determine whether someone becomes driven or disappears ◼️How hypnotic rhythm locks people into patterns of failure or success ◼️The ten drifter identities and how to recognize the one you default to under pressure This episode lays the foundation for understanding why willpower alone never creates lasting change. I show how drifting is learned, reinforced, and normalized—and how driven individuals interrupt those patterns to reclaim control of their future. Part one is about awareness, identity, and breaking free from unconscious momentum. In Part two, I'll go deeper into how to reprogram those patterns, replace fear with faith, and deliberately build the rhythms that create real, sustained progress. ◼️If you've got a product, offer, service… or idea… I'll show you how to sell it (the RIGHT way) Register for my next event → https://sellingonline.com/podcast ◼️Still don't have a funnel? He had just published a fascinating piece on his Substack, Hickman's Hinterlands, arguing that America wasn't unreasonably expensive — Americans themselves were simply demanding more out of their lives: living in urban hotspots, seeking out fancy apartments or big houses, refusing to take bets on up-and-coming areas. Hickman told this story through his personal lens; he resides in upstate New York (but, as you'll see in a moment, is also a bit of a nomad) in a rural, dilapidated town that also happens to be incredibly cheap and quite beautiful.I loved the story; it felt like a fresh narrative, delivered in a wholly unique voice. I began devouring Hickman's writing — on class, on the birth of his daughter, on the death of his mother, on what it's like to travel via bus through rural America, and even on his longing (and our shared affection) for the desert. So, a few months ago, I got Hickman on the phone and pitched him on the idea of writing for Tangle. What stories was he turning over in his head? What piece did he want some help with from a sharp and unique editorial team? What was he working on next? He was brimming with ideas, but one in particular caught my attention: a story about how he missed being homeless. Hickman had spent years as a kind of nomadic “bum” (his words) hitchhiking across America, and in a flourish, he described all the ways in which he felt more alive and more intellectually stimulated during that time in his life than any other. I was intrigued, and I pushed him for a draft.Ad-free podcasts are here!To listen to this podcast ad-free, and to enjoy our subscriber only premium content, go to ReadTangle.com to sign up!You can subscribe to Tangle by clicking here or drop something in our tip jar by clicking here. This year, we decided to do things a little differently. Instead of scrolling through another massive online retailer, we teamed up with our friends at Strike Zone Fishing in Jacksonville, Florida — one of the best local tackle shops in the South — to put together a holiday guide built around real-life use, local connection, and good gear that lasts. In this podcast, Chase Hancock and Hunter Leavine break down some of our favorite products of the year — everything from stocking stuffers and fly kits to gear we've tested on Drifter trips across the world. We've spent a lot of time in the field (and on the water) putting this stuff through the wringer, and these are the things that actually made the cut. Watch the full video, check out our full product list at captains collective.com, and remember: the best gifts can't be wrapped — they're the memories you make with the people you love on the water. We close out #NewOIRvember 2 with a movie that New World Pictures didn't release, but they nearly could've if they hadn't chased off Roger Corman to start Concorde Pictures, where he released THE DRIFTER in 1988. starring Kim Delaney (New World's Tour of Duty) as hard-working designer who has a hard time driving from Los Angeles to San Francisco and back again, who meets a tall dark stranger in Miles O'Keeffe (ATOR, THE FIGHTING EAGLE, THE CARTEL) who - does he smell? He smells, right? He's a drifter, so...smelly is a big possibility, right? How dangerous is it to lose your sense of smell? We discuss!  Written and directed by Larry Brand, who also acts in the movie, Brand's directorial debut, and also the debut of him writing, acting, and directing a movie as well, this also brings up the problems with conducting your business at the Oki Dog and giving family heirlooms to a stranger. Also, how important is project management? Why are people not going to movie theaters anymore? And, do cats like the ocean? THE DRIFTER brings up some serious and delicate topics, and we do our best to rip the door off of them all.  So sit back and relax on that motel floor in the room you've just rented from some motel that is somewhere between the Bay Area and Los Angeles but also somehow near mountains, and enjoy this smoldering, sex-filled thriller that tears the lid off of doing your due diligence when hiring people. Background checks, folks! Don't be afraid of them!  For all the shows in Someone's Favorite Productions Podcast Network, head here: https://www.someonesfavoriteproductions.com/.
