Of the 73 million Americans who viewed The Beatles' live debut on The Ed Sullivan Show in February 1964, we know with absolute certainty that a high percentage had their lives changed forever – this is not hyperbole. And of those, many were moved to take up instruments or start bands. And of that fraction, a handful … 281: The Beatles and The Cars with Elliot Easton Read More »

Rock 'N Roll Hall of Famer Ricky Byrd Live on Game Changers with Vicki Abelson Hanging out with Rock'N Roll Hall of Famer, Ricky Byrd, is like going home. Back to the days… when we were both in a daze. I was booking the Rock 'N Roll Café on Bleecker Street, Ricky was already a rockstar, center stage as lead guitarist with Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, playing those iconic riffs in the fab MTV Music Video Days... when there were ashtrays on restaurant tables, and MTV played music videos. Just found a great pic of Ricky and Elliot Easton sitting in on our tiny stage in '87ish. All those years ago, and yet how fun to have seen Elliot play live last week with The Immediate Family and Zoom tonight with Ricky. One big difference, both Ricky and I are sober. 36 years for him, and the last many, being of service and giving back with his time, and his music. His current passion, partnering with AllSober.com to aid those struggling with addiction to gain inspiration from their sober heroes. He treated us to his Ain't Gonna Live Like That No More to punctuate the point. Ricky received the Drug-Free Heroes Award, presented by the Foundation For a Drug-Free World, The Faces and Voices 2019 Voice of Recovery Award, and the 2019 Italian American of Distinction Award, presented by Governor Cuomo, for his work in recovery. This Rockboy walks his talk. Old friends, it was an easy breezy walk down memory lane, littered with one-liners, and rim shots. Ricky may be a rocker but he's a Borscht Belt comic at heart. Fabulous stories about touring with Graham Parker, Roger Daltry, and Ian Hunter, the thrill of playing THAT riff from All the Young Dudes, having Simon Kirke of Bad Company behind him hitting those beats, backing Brian Wilson, sitting next to MeatLoaf watching his hero Jeff Beck, both of them weeping. We talked quite a bit about Beck, and Townshend, Eddie Van Halen, John Mayer, Albert King, the old days of the Filmore East, The Academy of Music, the Humble Pie, J Geils Band, and Black Oak Arkansas show we both were at when we were babies. Speaking of the Babys, we talked John Waite, Ricky's old, my new friend, and his hysterical speech whilst being inducted into the Rock 'N Roll Hall of Fame with Joan Jett and The Blackhearts. Why she didn't much react behind him, and looking past the front row where Paul and Ringo, his raison d'etre for becoming a musician sat with Funk 49s, Joe Walsh. And then, sharing the stage with them - and his great interactions with both Paul and Ringo. Ricky's fan love for his heroes is so relatable and fun to witness. Ricky's Rhapsody in Blues - An Instrumental Tribute to Jeff Beck is spectacular as are his other WIcked Cool released singles, Louanne, Alien, and Glamdenic Blues, and they're available here: https://www.rickybyrd.com We got the story behind each and why he requests we download rather than stream. I did as soon as we got off the interweb. I adore my old friend. I so enjoyed every second and every word of this conversation. It was such a treat to spend time again in his great company. Bernardo Chavez Rico grew up making classical guitars. He learned the craft from his father. Luckily for us, Bernardo decided to branch out into solidbody electrics. And the world was never the same, as musicians across all genres played his instruments at some point in their careers (Elliot Easton of The Cars? Yup…) We were fortunate enough to take this vintage Mockingbird for a spin, and decode its many knobs and switches. Enjoy! Like the show? This week, my guest curator is Joe Milliken, author of “Let's Go! Benjamin Orr & The Cars” and we are crafting a mixtape filled with our favorite songs from (you guessed it!) The Cars! We also talk about some of the subject matter from Joe's book, Benjamin Orr & Ric Ocasek's pre-Cars band Milkwood; The New Cars, a 2007 version of the band featuring Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes from The Cars, and Todd Rundgren on vocals. It's no secret that The Cars' self-titled album is my favorite album of all time, so this was an extremely difficult episode for me, as I had to make sure to spread the love amongst all of their other (equally amazing) albums! Daytona Beach native Dyer Davis may seem like a new name in music, but the 23-year-old has been on the music scene for nearly a decade. His love for music started at the tender age of 4 when he learned to play guitar. Davis' father, also a musician, fueled his love for music with the iconic sounds of the 60s and 70s. Davis felt the groove of blues-rock, inspired by the early records of the late Jeff Beck. To Davis, the blues was more than just a sound. It was a feeling. A foundation of the very music he was drawn to play. Of course, starting out as a young teen, Davis found himself in a few different rock bands of his own and even becoming a member of Rubber Soulchild from which, he has now departed. “I have had the pleasure of jamming out with some really amazing musicians over the year,” Davis said. “Robben Ford, Peter Criss, Elliot Easton, Rami Jaffe from the Foo Fighters, to name a few.” Davis dabbled in country music for a short stent, but the blues kept calling his name. Now, Davis said he's found his home through the music that originally inspired him to become a musician. Working alongside iconic musicians and producers Victor Wainwright, Billy Chapin, Patricia and Stephen Dees, among others, Davis debuted on the blues scene in February this year with the album “Dog Bites Back' with WildRoots Records. His fiery vocals and soulful guitar skills earned him a nomination for New Artist Debut Release at the 2023 Blues Blast Magazine Awards. The Dyer Davis Band will also be performing at the awards show Saturday, Sept. 23 in Peoria, Illinois. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
In the late '70's through the early to mid '80's the Cars were it. Their first album sold over 6 million copies and they had hit after hit including "You Might Think", "Drive", "Just What I Needed" and "Good Times Roll" to name more than a few. As you can imagine Rock 'n Roll Hall of Famer Elliot Easton, who's signature lead guitar work would become identified as part of the Cars "sound", has a story to tell and it's so good to hear how some of these major bands found themselves and their audience and Elliot and the Cars are no exception.
Charlie FARREN burst onto the national scene in the early 80's as lead singer of THE JOE PERRY PROJECT, teaming up with Aerosmith lead guitarist Joe Perry and releasing an acclaimed album on Columbia Records. Farren penned the Billboard charting classics “Listen To The Rock” and “East Coast, West Coast”, also co-writing four songs with Perry including the hit “I've Got The Rock ‘N' Rolls Again”.The Joe Perry Project sold out theaters across the country and toured arena's & stadium's around the world with artists such as Ozzy Osbourne, Rush, Heart, ZZ Top, and Alice Cooper.FARREN subsequently formed FARRENHEIT, a trio releasing a self-titled debut album on Warner Brothers, produced by Keith Olsen. Three singles from that album, “Fool in Love”, “Bad Habit”, & “Lost in Loveland”, as well as video exposure on MTV, established FARRENHEIT as one of the era's premier rock acts. Highlights for FARRENHEIT included the coveted opening slot on the 75+ date BOSTON ‘Third Stage Tour', sold out from coast to coast, including a performance at the ‘Texxas Jam' to a sold out crowd of 85,000 people at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, TX.More recently, Charlie has been touring North America as ‘America's Special Guest' with Three Dog Night, REO Speedwagon, Cheap Trick, and many others. Sometimes life happens… and sometimes death happens. Everyone in the rock world was shocked to hear of Taylor Hawkins's untimely passing on March 25, 2022. We didn't know the man, but certainly thought a lot of him as a phenomenal musician who really was the driving force behind the Foo Fighters as well as modern rock n' roll in general. From videos and documentaries, he seemed like a really cool guy and sweet dude. This week we pay tribute to the smilin' heavy hitter and a hell of a singer, the only way we know how, by not playing a single note from the Foo Fighters. New to InObscuria? It's all about digging up obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal from one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. In this episode, we will focus on Taylor's solo material, guest appearances, and side projects. If there is one positive thing to come from this sadness, it would be that all of his great music gets the exposure it deserves.Songs this week include:Dave Grohl & Taylor Hawkins – “2112 Overture” from RUSH, Rock Hall Induction Ceremony (2013)Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Shapes Of Things” from Get The Money (2019)Brian May – “Cyborg” from Another World (1998)Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Louise” from Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders(2006)Coheed & Cambria – “No World For Tomorrow” from Good Apollo, I'm Burning Star IV, Volume Two: No World for Tomorrow(2007)Taylor Hawkins – “Southern Belles” from Kota (2016)The Birds Of Satan – “Wait Til Tomorrow” from The Birds Of Satan (2014)Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders – “Don't Have To Speak” from Red Light Fever(2010)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://twitter.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/InObscuria?asc=uCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Elliot Easton's well-constructed solos with The Cars were integral to their hits and were in many ways mini compositions within the songs. In our Truetone Lounge, we dive into how the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame member constructed those solos, and look deeply into the recording process of those seminal albums. Easton also thoroughly contrasts the producing styles of Roy Thomas Baker (Queen) and Mutt Lang (Def Leppard, AC/DC) on the various Car's albums and the hard work, and eye for detail that both producers shared. He also discusses his involvement with Gibson, Kramer signature models, and his custom orders with John Page that influenced the creation of the Fender Custom Shop in 1985. Elliot also discusses having Ringo Starr play on a track for The Empty Hearts, his supergroup that includes members from the Romantics, and Blondie.

Gary Ritchie y Cupid's Carnoval cierran un programa repleto de emociones y pop bitelsco para ir preparando las navidades con nuevos villancicos.⦁ The Empty Hearts, Coat-Tailer⦁ The Empty Hearts, Well, Look At You ⦁ Dear Stella, Time Machine ⦁ The Weeklings, (Break My Heart in ) 3 ⦁ The Weeklings, Little Tease (Alive If You Want It, live) ⦁ The Grip Weeds, Give Me Some Of Your Ways ⦁ The Grip Weeds, Infinite Soul⦁ The Reflectors, Teenage Hearts ⦁ The Reflectors, U Should Be My Girl ⦁ The Yum Yums, Crush On You⦁ The Yum Yums, Can't Get Enough Of Your Love⦁ Bill Lloyd, Don't Kill The Messenger⦁ Bill Lloyd, You Got Me⦁ Andy Bopp, I Am A Jetfighter⦁ Gary Ritchie, Tunnel Of Love⦁ Cupid's Carnival, She Don't Care⦁ Cupid's Carnival, Better Times Ahead⦁ Gary Ritchie, Rain

The duo of Richard Otcasek and Benjamin Orrzechowski was first formed in the late sixties. They formed several bands over the years, including the Paramount-signed but short-lived Milkwood of '72. Their last band before The Cars was Cap'n Swing, which consisted of Ric, Ben, Elliot Easton (née Steinberg), Glenn Evans on drums, Todd Roberto on bass, and Danny Schliftlin on piano. Ric Ocasek - Connect Up With Me (1982) Cheezy synths abound. Benjamin Orr - Too Hot To Stop (1986) Fake drums abound. Cap 'n Swing - Come Back Down (1977) Cap 'n Swing - Dream Trader (1976) Cap 'n Swing - Bye Bye Love (1976) Cap 'n Swing - Indigo (1976) Elliot Easton - New For Me (1985) Elliot Easton - I Want You (1985) Greg Hawkes - Jet Lag (1983) Greg Hawkes - Voyage Into Space (1983) Milkwood - Along The Way (1972) Milkwood - Makeshift Pawn (1972) Milkwood - With You With Me (1972) Ocasek and Orr - Every Day (1974) Gilbert Neal - Jackie Don't Go (2016) The Modern Lovers - Pablo Picasso (1976) I just don't get it. But David Robinson of The Cars was in this group, and that's why I include it here. Guitarist/singer/actor/Broadway performer CELISSE (aka Celisse Henderson) has been gravitating to the stage since she was just — no joke — two years old. In addition to playing lead guitar for Lizzo on Saturday Night Live (where she wielded a three-pickup SG much like that of her hero, Sister Rosetta Tharpe), Celisse performed at Gibson’s recent Gibson at the Grove event at NAMM, gracing a bill that included Billy Gibbons, Lzzy Hale, Elliot Easton, Don Felder, Jimmy Vivino, and Slash. She has also worked with Melissa Etheridge, Trey Anastasio, and other stars. On this episode, host JUDE GOLD plugs in with Celisse at the Gibson Showroom in Los Angeles, CA. Presented by GUITAR PLAYER magazine and GUITARPLAYER.COM.
JIMMY VIVINO may be best known as Conan O’Brien’s Fedora-wearing musical director, but — speaking of hats — “late-night guitar hero” is just one of the “hats” Jimmy wears on a regular basis. An in-demand bandleader, Jimmy’s latest gig was last week at the NAMM convention in California, where Gibson hired Jimmy to lead a stellar ensemble backing Slash, Don Felder, Elliot Easton, Celisse, Lzzy Hale, Jared James Nichols, Richie Faulkner, Billy Gibbons, and others. On this episode, Jimmy plugs in with host JUDE GOLD, shares a revered Magic Sam guitar breakdown (as well as licks and approaches behind his concert album, 13 Live), and reflects on adventures spanning everything from the Gibson event and the Conan show to his stints with Hubert Sumlin, Chuck Berry, and other guitar legends. Brought to you by GUITAR PLAYER magazine and GUITARPLAYER.COM
It Came From Boston: 5 experienced musicians come together to make something new: keyboard whiz Greg Hawkes; the bassist with the killer voice, Benjamin Orr; drummer David Robinson from the legendary Modern Lovers; one of the tastiest guitarists in the business, Elliot Easton; and singer/songwiriter/guitarist & mastermind Ric Ocasek. Merging classic guitar rock with the burgeoning synth-pop sounds to bring New Wave to the masses, The Cars defined that sound for the late-70's/Early '80's. It all started on local Boston radio with this song. "Just What I Needed" (Ric Ocasek) Copyright 1978 Lido Music, Inc.
On September 15, 2019 the world lost an amazing songwriter with a killer voice, wild imagination, superb guitar skills, and endless creativity. Truly one of a kind! We here at the show are talking about the late, great, sensational Ric Ocasek and he is sorely missed. Along with Greg Hawkes, Elliot Easton, David Robinson, and another brilliant talent that shed this mortal coil way too soon Ben Orr the Cars were formed. Together they spawned hit after hit, provide utterly timeless. For this episode we focus on their fantastic albums and pay tribute two artistic souls that have passed on. Scot and Jeff discuss The Cars with Kevin Madden. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) with guest Kevin Madden. Kevin is the executive vice president of Arnold Ventures. He's a Republican strategist and former advisor to President George W. Bush, Governor Mitt Romney, and Republican House leaders John Boehner and Tom DeLay. Kevin is on Twitter at @KevinMaddenDC. Kevin's Music Pick: The Cars The team at Political Beats mourns the death of Ric Ocasek by doing what we do best: obsessively listening to and breaking down his career in The Cars. This is a nice, tight compact show, like the best of their hits. In fact, we dove so deep into their discography that you might think we're foolish. All three of us are really big fans of the debut album and Ben Orr's vocals. And all of us choose a different second-favorite album alongside the consensus number one, THE CARS, one of the best debut albums of all time. Why don't we know Ric's real age? Why did “You Might Think” win the first MTV Video Music Award, beating out “Thriller”? How did Elliot Easton score a solo album deal in the 1980s? Answers to those questions and much more on this week's tribute to Ric Ocasek and The Cars.
Six-Pack of Ric Ocasek, Volume Two On this Six-Pack episode, Alex Alt of the Sly Dog Music-Cast, Ben Montgomery of the Records Revisited Podcast, and Eric Miller of Pods & Sods celebrate the life and work of Ric Ocasek. Ric's career as a songwriter goes back to the late 60s, his relationship with Benjamin Orr started in 1967 and the two stuck together through the 70s in various configurations. But it wasn't until the two found themselves in Boston and connected with Elliot Easton, Greg Hawkes, and David Robinson that The Cars were truly born. They came out strong with what many consider to be the greatest debut album ever. A series of multi-platinum albums and a slew of hits followed until they kinda broke up in the mid-to-late 80s. Ric continued for the following decades as a beloved solo artist and highly successful and coveted producer. His unique style as a songwriter and singer coupled with his image as the coolest guy in any room have made him a true rock and roll icon and hero to many. Ric passed away earlier this week while recovering from surgery and so we wanted to pay tribute. So sit back, brush your rock and roll hair, and join us as we honor one of the greats, Mr Ric Ocasek.

We're kicking off a series on the artists behind some of the indelible hits of the 80s with a legend, Wally Palmar of the Romantics! They are one of the most successful power pop bands ever and recorded a couple of hits that are still ubiquitous today like "Talking In Your Sleep" and, of course, "What I Like About You" (which was actually not a big hit when it came out in 1980). Despite some well-deserved success and a healthy touring schedule today, there were some lean years in the middle that the Romantics had to endure through, but came out the other end on top. We talk about the ups and downs of their career, the diversity of their albums, and how they've soldiered on for 40 years. We also discuss his wonderful side project The Empty Hearts, the supergroup he's in with guys like Clem Burke of Blondie and Elliot Easton of the Cars. Please enjoy! http://www.romanticsdetroit.com/

In the early 80's my older brother came home from a Queen concert and was raving about this band called Billy Squier. Of course, he picked up the album, and when he played it and when I listened to it, I immediately fell in love with their music. Needless to say, they really rocked our home in Brooklyn from that day on. Little did I know, that just a short few years later, I'd get the chance to befriend them and learn more about them and their music. Watching Alan play live was a true musical experience. Alan St. Jon is a prolific keyboard player and is an invaluable member of the Billy Squier band, his unique backing vocals and very special keyboard sound is fresh and original. Their album "Don't Say No" sold over six million copies. World renowned writer and critic Chuck Eddy's book entitled "The 500 Greatest Rock Albums in the Universe" rated Billy Squier's album "Don't Say No" at number 67 and "The Tale of the Tape" at number 122. Alan has a long list of accolades and has worked with musicians whether supporting their tour or recording on their albums, the list is too long to put down in words here, but, some of them are: Cher, Twisted Sister, Ronnie Spector, Foreigner, Ted Nugent, Phoebe Snow, Brian Setzer, Alice Cooper, Tommy Shaw, Iggy Pop, Cinderella, Michael Bolton, Fiona, Paul Young, Peter Wolf, Leslie West, Desmond Child, Elliot Easton, John Entwistle and more. His extensive recording experience has enabled him to work side by side with a number of Grammy Award winning producers such as Jack Douglas who produced Aerosmith and John Lennon, Andy Johns of the Led Zepplin fame, Mac who produced several Queen albums and Desmond Child who produced Michael Bolton, Bon Jovi and Cher. Alan latest chapter of his life now includes being an author and illustrator of a children's book series called: "The Adventures of Moo Moo and the Furry Slippers" a series of children's books to help kids face the daily challenges of life.
