Ah, it feels like just yesterday we spotted Bill Engvall in Designing Women's fourth season (E21 Tough Enough). It was the perfect opportunity to talk about a real Southern phenomenon: The Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Nikki clued us in on a really interesting Designing Women crossover – and she used her CRAZY good Internet sleuthing skills to track herself down in a live taping from 20 years ago. It's really impressive, y'all.

Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Frank L. GoldwasserFormerly known in blues circles as “Paris Slim”, Franck L. Goldwasser was born and raised in Paris, France in the 1960's and studied fine arts before moving to Oakland, California in 1983. A self-taught guitarist and vocalist, Goldwasser began studying the recordings of Elmore James, B.B. King and T- Bone Walker at age 16. In 1978, Goldwasser's first public appearance finds him jamming with the renowned harmonica player Sugar Blue (of Rolling Stones' "Miss You" fame), then a Paris resident. Gaining experience while sitting-in with with visiting American bluesmen such as Luther Allison, George Smith, Jimmy Dawkins and Phillip Walker, Goldwasser lands his first professional gigs as backup guitarist for his idol Texas-bred California bluesman Sonny Rhodes in Paris and Reims. Following Rhodes' invitation to come to California, the Frenchman spends three months in Oakland and Los Angeles in 1981, meeting and jamming with Big Mama Thornton, Smokey Wilson, Lowell Fulson, Frankie Lee, Mark Naftalin, Buddy Ace, Troyce Key and J.J. Malone, Cool Papa and Mark Hummel, while documenting the West Coast blues scene for the French music magazine Soul Bag. Having moved permanently to the San Francisco Bay Area in June 1983 , Franck Goldwasser immerses himself in the then-vibrant East Bay blues scene, quickly landing a job in singer-guitarist Troyce Key's band. While gigging every weekend at the famed Eli Mile High club, he hones his skills working alongside West Coast blues titans Percy Mayfield, Lowell Fulson and Jimmy McCracklin, as well as Bay Area blues luminaries Omar “The Magnificient” Shariff (formerly Dave Alexander), Johnny Heartsman, Ron Thompson and Elvin Bishop.

Sugar Blue has certainly pushed the boundaries of the harmonica, with his rapid fire licks, lots of high end runs and gorgeous tone. It was perhaps his early jazz influences that shaped his distinctive sound, although there is no doubt that he has paid homage to the harmonica greats, spending time with some of the classic players. As well as numerous solo albums, Sugar has recorded with many illustrious names, including the Rolling Stones, Willie Dixon and Frank Zappa, to name but a few. He spent his childhood among the musicians and show people who knew his mother, including the great Billie Holiday, and decided that he wanted to be a performer. Blue received his first harmonica from his aunt, and proceeded to hone his chops by wailing along with Bob Dylan and Stevie Wonder songs on the radio, he was soon to be influenced by the jazz greats such as Dexter Gordon and Lester Young.

THE CALIFORNIA GUITAR TRIO has enthralled listeners with a singular sound that fearlessly explores the intersections between rock, jazz, classical, and world music. It even throws in the occasional surf or spaghetti Western tune for good measure. Comprised of Bert Lams, Hideyo Moriya and Paul Richards, the group has established a unique, personal connection with audiences. CGTs 14 albums, streamed over 47 million times on Pandora, offer diverse snapshots of the groups mercurial muse. The trios most recent release Masterworks showcases its classical side, with expansive takes on Bach, Beethoven, Arvo Prt, and Schubert. SUGAR BLUE is the Grammy Award winner who has played with legends from Willie Dixon to The Rolling Stones. Hes been called “One of the foremost harmonica blowers in all of Modern blues (Rolling Stone MAGAZINE) He began his career as a street musician and made his first recordings in 1975 with legendary blues figures Brownie McGhee and Roosevelt Sykes. Sugar Blue has played and recorded with musicians ranging from Willie Dixon to Stan Getz to Frank Zappa to Johnny Shines to Bob Dylan, he is perhaps best known for his signature riff and solo on the Rolling Stones hit “Miss You. His new release is Voyage on M.C. Records. WoodSongs Kid: Matt Chalk is young bluesman from Grove City, Ohio. This 16 years old received a Generation Blues Scholarship from the Blues Foundation last year.

Sugar Blue cut his teeth performing with blues greats Roosevelt Sykes, Brownie McGhee, Victoria Spivey and later put the funky harmonica riff in the Rolling Stones famous hit single “Miss You.” He would record on 3 Rolling Stone Albums. During the 80’s, following a brief stint in Europe and recording with Louisiana Red, Blue moved to Chicago to soak in the rich harmonica scene led by Big Walter Horton, Carey Bell, James Cotton and Junior Wells. While there, he was recruited into the Willie Dixon Band and recorded on his Grammy-winning album, Hidden Charms and also collected his own Grammy trophy for the album Blues Explosion. He released his first studio album in many years called, Voyage, available from MC Records.

We actually started by speaking with Lisa Grissom from Tall City Blues Fest, a Music On The Couch Festival Partner.  Lisa gave us a great overview of this year's lineup and events that occur during the festival.  At the end, Talent Curator, Ronn Reeger, joined us to chat. Sugar Blue - a miscomunication between Sugar and I gave us no time to talk.  We did play two songs and rescheduled Sugar to June 20th So Thrilled! A short two weeks after his induction in the Blues Hall Of Fame, Eddy “The Chief” Clearwater  came by and I had a great conversation about his growing up in Mississippi, moving to Chicago and his years of performing while we checked out tunes from Soul Funky. The Honey Island Swamp Band formed in California after Katrina had displaced the members, they have been making music over the last 10 years. Luther Dickinson produced their new album, Demolition Day.  Aaron Wilkinson joined me to tell us his journey and the circumstances behind the band's formation.  He also discussed the progression of the band's music over their first 5 allbums. Couch Kid New Music brought Bridget Kelly and Tim Fik back to The Couch to talk about their new album Outta The Blue.  These two have become good friends and it was fun to share their new music about a week before the album releases.
