Tonight we had some music in celebration of Pride Month and Black Music Month, we checked out the new Ugly Pop Records compilation, "Left Without Much Fuss," and more.
This show had a lot of underlying themes which I probably don't need to spell out here. Sorry it was a day late. Hope you dig it.
Henry Rollins dives deep into the story of the Cramps, from his personal love of the band to being part of the resurrection of the record label, Vengeance Records.

Interview by Ali WilliamsSome bands age quietly into legacy status, then there is The Living End, who appear to have treated the passing of time as a personal dare. After decades of twisting punk, rockabilly, sharp-suited swagger and full-throttle Australian rock into something entirely their own, the band are now being welcomed into the ARIA Hall of Fame. For bass player Scott Owen, speaking with HEAVY Magazine's Ali Williams, the honour is still landing somewhere between pride, disbelief and that very Australian instinct to not make too much of the emotional bit in case someone notices. He admits the induction has made the band stop and reflect, which is no small task when you are part of a group that has spent most of its life moving at the speed of a getaway car with a double bass in the back seat. The Living End's first EP arrived in the mid-'90s, the first record followed in 1998, and Scott and Chris Cheney had already been playing together since around 1990. The mathematics, as Scott cheerfully points out, are “confronting”. Fair. Nobody asked time to come in here with a calculator and start being rude. But that long history is exactly why The Living End still matter. They were never neatly slotted into the machinery around them. In the '90s, when Triple J was a very different beast and Australian alternative music had its own wild ecosystem, The Living End were not simply alternative. They were, in Scott's words, “the alternative to the alternative” - a strange, sharp, highly flammable hybrid of rockabilly and punk that did not fit anywhere and therefore carved out its own corner by force. That identity has not softened. It has become the band's signature. Scott's double bass remains one of Australian rock's great visual and sonic weapons. It is not just an instrument in The Living End; it is part of the architecture. Alongside Chris Cheney's famously elastic guitar work and the locked-in chemistry that only comes from surviving decades of stages, buses, hotels, rehearsals, chaos and suspiciously romantic dinners together, the band still carry a sense of occasion every time they step up. Scott jokes that he and Chris have probably had more romantic dinners together than any couple in the world. Somewhere, a relationship counsellor just threw away their notebook. That chemistry also includes Andy Strachan, affectionately referred to by Scott as “the new guy”, despite having been in the band for around 20 years. Rock and roll timelines are ridiculous. A man can spend two decades behind the kit and still be treated like he has just wandered in with fresh ID and a lunchbox.Swinging back to one of the year's great live surprises: Jimmy Barnes joining The Living End onstage at the Hotel Brunswick. Scott says it was a hard secret to keep after finding out that morning, because the whole point was to blow everyone's minds without warning. Mission accomplished. When Barnesy appears unannounced at a pub gig, that is not a cameo. That is a national incident with vocals. For Ali, who had been in work mode in the media pit before realising she was casually talking to Jimmy Barnes himself, the moment became one of those live music memories that gets filed under: “This is why we leave the house.” It also reinforced something that runs right through the interview: the irreplaceable magic of real bodies, real instruments, sweaty venues and the shared lunacy of a crowd being lifted by noise. That idea sits at the heart of The Living End's current chapter. Their upcoming run carries the spirit of I Only Trust Rock N Roll, a sentiment Scott says came from the same place many of the new songs did: the strange, rattled, post-2020 world where everything suddenly felt unstable and everyone started wondering what, if anything, could still be trusted. For Scott, the answer is simple. Rock and roll still feels real. Still, for all the shifts around them, The Living End's purpose remains gloriously direct. They like to put on a show. They like leaving people wondering what the hell just happened. They like blowing the roof off the joint, whether that joint is a festival stage, a regional venue, or the kind of pub where the walls know more secrets than the patrons.Their latest album bares the same namesake as their upcoming tour - I Only Trust Rock N Roll. The album is available now on all platforms and for tickets and tour information head to www.thelivingend.com.auBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Air Week: May 25-31, 2026 Imperial Records, Pt. 11 – 1957-58 Imperial Records was a major player among the indie labels of the late 1940s and the entirety of the 1950s. Started in Los Angeles in 1946 by Lew Chudd, a Canadian raised in Harlem, Imperial began filling the ethnic and cultural voids left by the majors at the time. Chudd knew there was a large market for Latino Music in America, so he headed to Mexico City and recorded some Mexican jump bands that sold very well. He then included square dance records which also racked up sales as now square dances could be held without callers. He began recording Rhythm & Blues in 1947 and by ’49, he had hired Dave Bartholomew to scout talent in fertile New Orleans. The Braun Brother had beat him to The Crescent City by recording Paul Gayten and Annie Laurie first, but with Bartholomew’s help, Chudd was able to sign Fats Domino, Smiley Lewis, Archibald and Jewel King, dominating the New Orleans R&B scene. This week, we conclude our Imperial series with part eleven, focusing on Imperial’s R&B releases from the end of 1957 and the beginning of 1958. There’s a new hit-maker in town as Imperial signs the young heartthrob, Ricky Nelson as well as other Rockabilly, Rock and Pop acts. Chudd begins to move the label away from Rhythm & Blues and that great New Orleans sound that brought the hits over the past decade. Fats is still able to chart and does so with gusto as “What Will I Tell My Heart,” “Wait & See,” “When I See You,” “Sick & Tired” and “The Big Beat” all make the charts. Ernie Freeman scores one of Imperial’s best-sellers with his cover of the Bill Justis tune, “Raunchy” and Bobby Mitchell records the first version of “I’m Gonna Be A Wheel Someday.” 1958 is a great place for us to stop as we’ve covered Imperial’s R&B heyday over the past eleven week’s on your source for the “soul that came before Rock n’ Roll,” the “Juke In The Back.” LISTEN BELOW
Roll down the windows and put that pedal to the metal because we've got two hours of wild rhythms and deep cuts this coming Friday. We'll be digging into those slap-back echo, train-beat rhythms and wild-eyed energy of rockabilly music — that explosive blend of country, blues, boogie and early rock 'n' roll that rattled America in the 1950s and helped redraw the cultural map for a generation of teenagers looking for something loud, fast and a little dangerous. Now sure, everybody knows the giants — Elvis, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis — but tonight's show leans into the side roads and back highways of rockabilly history. Alongside a few familiar names, we'll spend two hours with the obscure cats, regional stars, one-hit wonders and forgotten firebrands producing some of the wildest sounds ever pressed onto vinyl. From Sonny Fisher and Ronnie Self to Roy Duke, Sonny Burgess, Johnny Garner and Laura Lee Perkins, this is the sound of American youth culture before it was polished, corporate or safe.
Features performances by local and national musicians "live" in the Mike Eisenstadt Live Performance Studio at WMNF.
A proper Manifesto roller coaster ride, from R&B to hardcore and destinations in between. We had new stuff from Taste Testors, the Strains, Bad Idea, Backroad Burners, Iris Paralysis, Miscalculations, Ultrabomb, the Sleeveens, NOi!se, Brigata Vendetta, Total Massacre, MK Ultras and more.

Fats Domino continues his hit streak as both “Blue Monday” and “I’m Walkin'” top the R&B chart and “Valley of Tears” stalls at #2. These 3 singles would also crack the pop top 10! Dave Bartholomew records a cult favorite about the Signifying Monkey and produces some great sides from James “Sugarboy” Crawford, Faye Adams and Chris Kenner. Blues shouter Roy Brown returns to the charts in ’57 on Imperial with “Let The Four Winds Blow” and a cover of Buddy Knox’s Rockabilly hit, “Party Doll.” The line between R&B and Rock n’ Roll is blurred as we keep those records spinning on part ten of the Imperial Records Story on this week’s “Juke In The Back.” LISTEN BELOW

The opening riff of “White Wedding” is instantly recognizable—a skittering, syncopated guitar line quickly swallowed by pummeling drums. But the song itself is a bit of an enigma. Is it rock? Pop? New wave? Rockabilly punk? Like much of Billy Idol's career, the song exists somewhere in between. Idol was a shape-shifter, blurring genre lines in pursuit of bigger hooks, bigger audiences and, eventually, pop stardom.Raised near London and running with the Sex Pistols' inner circle, Idol arrived with genuine punk bona fides. We did a deep dive into the new Social Distortion record tonight, plus we sampled the new Hillbillies in Hell comp, a great new Power Pop comp from Soul Jazz, and the new Strains LP, "Queen Death." All this and more on Manifesto 809.
This week's guest, Sal Andolina, is the BPO's hottest switch-hitter in his permanent position of clarinetist, bass clarinetist and saxophonist. He has been a full-time member of the BPO for the past 21 seasons. His association with the Orchestra began in the late '70s when he was a standout performance major at the University at Buffalo as a full-scholarship student on the clarinet. Upon completion of his degree at UB under former BPO clarinetist James Pyne, Andolina pursued advanced clarinet studies with Stanley Hasty at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester and coaching with the legendary Benny Goodman in New York City. In addition to appearing as a soloist with the BPO, Andolina has been featured with the Rochester Philharmonic, the Grand Rapids Symphony, the Fresno Philharmonic, the Arts Nova Chamber Orchestra and the North American New Music Festival. More significantly, Andolina has been featured on at least 15 studio recordings, including his prized CD: "Like Benny to Me," a tribute to Goodman. Note, this episode was originally recorded on April 9, 2026 where we talked about his association with Michael Tilson Thomas. Sadly Mr. Thomas passed away on April 22, 2026.

Episode 807 brings you punk rock, hardcore, country, rock & roll, and more. Plus, Willie Nelson turned 93. Nedra Talley, the last living Ronette, passed away, age 80. I also sort-of resurrected an old, short-lived segment most people probably won't remember.
Happy belated birthday to Iggy Pop and a Preacher Boy digital download giveaway! We also had some power pop, punk rock, hardcore, rockabilly, rock & roll, psychobilly, folk punk, and more.
Rockabilly guitar great Darrel Higham joins us to talk about his work with Marty Wilde on the new LP Let's Rock This Place + Xena Arielle from Sister Luv returns to talk about Cliff Richard's 1967 EP “Carol Singers” and the “All My Love” single.
This week's show peels back the velvet curtain of the Golden Age of Country music and introduces some lower chart shed shakers from the outskirts of Nashville. While the charts were full of polished crooners and weeping violins, there was a different sound brewing in and around the perimeter—a raw, frantic energy that didn't belong in a ballroom. These are the tracks that blurred the line between the honky-tonk and the garage. We'll deliver the distorted side of that golden age with some familiar names (Buck Owens, Jerry Reed, Johnny Bond) and some of those who were lost to those dusty Ernest Tubb Record Shop dollar bins (Eddie Zack, Jimmy Swan, Benny Barnes), all in a package meant to get those fingers poppin'. Hope you can join us for some gritty, low-fi country vibes.
Today, 25 years ago, we lost Joey Ramone. Crazy to think it's been so long! Played some Ramones and related stuff in his memory. The Fret Rattles, "As the World Falls Apart," LP pre-order went live tonight, and as of writing this post, I only have one left on Bandcamp. I played some new tracks from the album as well. I debuted the upcoming Total Massacre EP, "A Time of Whatever... ," tonight. It releases April 24th. Had a brand new single from Stevie Tombstone tonight as well, "Pictures of You." And those are just the highlights...
Big show! Happy birthday to the first Clash album. Brand new Preacher Boy hot off the presses! New Fret Rattles and news about the new album release. We also had new stuff from Taste Testors, Miscalculations, Pleasants, and Disposable Dogs. And, of course, more!

“Beyond the Duplex Planet” is a feature documentary about artist David Greenberger and his unconventional work with senior citizens. In 1979, fresh out of art school, Greenberger took a job as activities director at the Duplex Nursing Home in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts. He began conducting quirky interviews with the home's senior citizens, rejecting a pat oral history approach in favor of questions that would spark engagement: “Which do you prefer – coffee or meat?” “Why do people spit?” “What do you think George Washington's voice sounded like?” and “What is embarrassment?” The result of this was The Duplex Planet, an early ‘zine, complete with excerpts from the interviews, as well as offbeat music reviews and poems, unorthodox illustrations and graphics, all by the residents themselves. Over time this material has become the basis for spoken word shows, podcasts, graphic novels and numerous albums, many of these projects featuring well-known artists. Champions and/or collaborators of Greenberger and his senior colleagues include people like magicians Penn & Teller, cartoonists Daniel Clowes and Lynda Barry, musicians Dave Alvin, Bill Frisell, Peter Buck (REM), David Hidalgo and Louie Perez (Los Lobos), artist Ed Ruscha, actors Lili Taylor and Martin Mull, and legions of other fans. Greenberger's work interviewing seniors continues to this day. Beyond the Duplex Planet explores notions of aging and its intersection with art and community. It's also a revealing look at the life of an artist devoted to documenting the elderly who is himself moving into his senior years. The film will have its world premiere at SxSW this month with a number of screenings. And it’s being distributed by Filmwax friend Jim Browne’s Argot Pictures. Beth Harrington is an Emmy-award winning independent producer, director and writer, whose fervor for American history, music and culture has led to a series of critically acclaimed films. Her independent production Welcome to the Club – The Women of Rockabilly, a music documentary about the pioneering women of rock ‘n' roll, was honored with a 2003 Grammy nomination and has been seen on public television and at film festivals in the U.S. and abroad. Beth's most recent work, The Winding Stream – The Carters, The Cashes and The Course of Country Music appeared at over 30 festivals worldwide including a SXSW premiere and has won many top festival awards. Earlier work with WGBH-Boston for the NOVA science series was honored with two national Emmy nominations while her local work with Oregon Public Broadcasting has resulted in six other regional Emmy nominations for historical and public affairs program producing and writing. A rock ‘n' roll singer and guitarist, she is most noted for her years as a member of Jonathan Richman & The Modern Lovers on Sire Records. https://youtu.be/nzgbOeFOFYk
