Epidode 311: When I met lifelong musician Red Young on board Delbert McClinton's Sandy Beaches Cruise, I knew I had to interview him. He's had one of those journeyman's careers that ties together all the threads of American music, from pop to R&B to jazz. He's a pianist, Hammond organ specialist, singer, arranger and producer, and at 76 years old, he's seen it all. He's worked with Kinky Friedman, Joan Armatrading, Dolly Parton, Sonny & Cher, Linda Ronstadt, Eric Burdon of the Animals, Marcia Ball, Janiva Magness, and of course Delbert McClinton himself, whom he met in his home town of Fort Worth, TX some sixty years ago. Sit back and enjoy the stories.
A two-time Grammy Award winning American Roots musician and an 8th generation Louisiana Creole performer who leads the Zydeco Experience Band with accordion and vocals as they take their audiences on a multi-cultural tour of the world. The band creates a hypnotic mix of zydeco-roots-reggae-folk-soul-gospel and New Orleans jazz that is carefully crafted to lift spirits and force bodies onto the dance floor. Their zydeco music has been featured in the historic Disney film, The Princess and the Frog in collaboration with legendary songwriter Randy Newman and has been written up in Rolling Stone and Billboard Magazine. Terrance has recorded with Paul Simon, Art Neville, Dennis Quaid, the Meters, Marcia Ball and Dr. John. He toured with Los Lobos, the late Robert Palmer, Dave Matthews Band and even shared the stage with Steve Wonder. Simien has deep Creole roots and continues to redefine his genre and elevate his cultures visibility by touring to more than 40+ countries and performed over 9000 concerts. He created an outreach educational program called Creole for Kidz about the History of Zydeco for K-12 and college students that has helped raise the cultural IQ of 250,000 students, parents, teachers and administrators around the globe.

I had the opportunity to chat with Austin rock duo The Caughtery. Formed in 2020, The Caughtery is long-time Austin music veterans Lisa Tingle and David Gayler, whose contemporary rock output is influenced by musical threads running from the 60s through current. Their 2022 debut EP "The Caughtery" presents a series of “musical paintings”, expressing the pressure and fragility of the human state over the last few years. In September of 2023, they released "The Rain Song," paying tribute to Led Zeppelin, produced and recorded by David Gayler and mixed by legendary producer Tim Palmer (Pearl Jam, Tin Machine, U2, Ozzy Osbourne, HIM, The Mission), who also worked with Robert Plant on his '"Shaken n Stirred" solo album. "This is one of Led Zeppelin's most beautiful songs. A beautiful ballad legendarily created based on George Harrison's belief and comments to the band members that Led Zeppelin needed to compose more ballads. Mr. Plant and Page apparently took that to heart and created this masterpiece," says Lisa Tingle. Lisa Tingle has received multiple honors at the Austin Music Awards (Female Vocalist of the Year, Band of the Year, Best Song, Musician of the Year, Album of the Year), and has toured / performed with legends such as Etta James, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Double Trouble, Eric Johnson, Stephen Bruton, Monte Montgomery and Marcia Ball. David Gayler is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, songwriter and studio owner based in Spicewood, Texas. Having moved here from New York in the mid-80s, Gayler has been in various bands over the years, opening for such notable artists as The Romantics, Charlie Sexton and Jerry Jeff Walker, and was also a member of the Party Band during MTVs journey down to Texas in the late 1980s.What is the Caughtery ?"Cutting or making new sound but cauterizing it and sealing it as you go along the path." Episode 273: Thirty years ago, legendary R&B singer Delbert McClinton proved he was ahead of his time by launching his Sandy Beaches Cruise, a January festival at sea that featured his friends and associated artists from the bluesy side of Americana. Since then, the music cruise business has flourished across many genres. A company called Star Vista Live bought Sandy Beaches from Delbert a few years ago and now does the management while Delbert himself acts as host. I got a fortunate invitation to act as artist interviewer on this year's cruise, and they let me report my own account of this luxurious but accessible experience. In this hour you'll hear from Delbert himself, Mavericks lead singer Raul Malo, cruise lifer Marcia Ball, emerging artist Yates McKendree, singer Etta Britt, gospel great Anne McCrary, and more.

#antones #fabulousthunderbirds #stevierayvaughan #austinmusicians Angela discusses her long career and talks about her friends in the music biz: Stevie Ray Vaughan, Muddy Waters, Huey Lewis, Gregg Allman, Janis Joplin and more. In the early 1960s, Strehli learned the harmonica and bass guitar before becoming a vocalist. In 1966 she visited Chicago, and attended concerts given by Howlin' Wolf, Muddy Waters and Buddy Guy. In her final university year, Strehli and Lewis Cowdrey formed the Fabulous Rockets. Strehli then sang as a backing vocalist for James Polk and the Brothers and assisted with Storm, which had been formed by Cowdrey and Jimmie Vaughan. In 1972, she was a founding member of Southern Feeling, along with W. C. Clark and Denny Freeman. Three years later Strehli became the stage manager and sound technician at Antone's, a nightclub in Austin, Texas. By 1986, Strehli had recorded Stranger Blues (EP) which help launch Antone's own record label. Her debut album was Soul Shake (1987, Antone's Records), and she appeared on Dreams Come True, with Lou Ann Barton and Marcia Ball (1990). Her own effort Blonde and Blue (1993, Rounder Records) assisted in building the Austin, Texas blues scene, alongside nightclub owner Clifford Antone, Kim Wilson, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmie Vaughan. In 1998, Strehli released Deja Blue, and Blue Highway followed in 2005. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Angela StrehliHusky-voiced blues and soul singer Angela Strehli has often been called the "First Lady of Texas Blues." Indeed, her contributions both on and off stage have done much to propel the Austin blues scene toward international prominence. Whether recording with such friends as Marcia Ball, Lou Ann Barton, Sue Foley, and Stevie Ray Vaughan, or helping mastermind policies behind the success of Antone's---the legendary Austin blues club---she has performed with unerring taste and verve. For a major modern blues figure, the sultry blonde has not recorded prolifically, preferring to treat each album as a special event. However, the albums she has chosen to share with the public are remarkably entertaining and expressive slices of gut-bucket blues revival and scintillating uptown soul.
Piano playing/Songwriting Legend, Marcia Ball, talks about getting into the music business in the late 60's, Austin's early days, Arlyn Studios when it was a honky-tonk, Freeda and the Firedogs. The world class stages she's been on, and Clifford Antone. Recorded at Arlyn Studios and hosted by Karl Anderson.

#746 - Marcia Ball The Marcia Ball Interview is featured on The Paul Leslie Hour. So, we have a short interview from the archives and it's just for you. Marcia Ball is a renowned blues singer and pianist. Paul E. Leslie has had the grand pleasure to see her a couple of times in concert, and her records are worth seeking out. Marcia Ball was born in Orange, Texas. So she's Texas born, but really she was raised and I guess you could she's from Vinton, Louisiana. She has a lot of the Gulf Coast and Louisiana influence in her work. Whether she's performing her own songs or someone else wrote, it's distinctly Marcia Ball. People who love real music love her material and have for years. So, this interview with Marcia Ball was taped out doors. It was recorded at this funky coffee shop in the very funky Little Five Points neighborhood of Atlanta. She was playing at the Variety Playhouse, naturally. They had just a few minutes to talk before Marcia Ball would be taking the stage. Now, maybe you have just a minute to help support the show. We're thankful that you're listening to this - but we would be forever grateful to anyone who can do the extra good deed by going to thepaulleslie.com/support It keeps this show going. And right now, we're about to embark on new goals and your help will allow us to get to that next level. Let's start the show. Take us back there.

This was the beginning of a new era where Marcia's talent was being recognized as she became one of Ms. Griffiths' background vocalists. Listen to her recent interview and get acclimated with the exceptional vocal energy as exercised on each track.

Dion and his music have long represented a special time and place, reflective of a moment when a song could mean so much. When a singer could sum up what it means to be young, in love and on top of the world. R & B, blues, doo-wop and that first wave of rock all influenced Dion's approach to music. “I Wonder Why” was Dion's first hit with The Belmonts and over the next two years the group earned a reputation not only for topping the charts, but for creating some of the most vital and exciting doo wop music on the American scene. With songs such as “I Wonder Why,” “A Teenager In Love” and “Where or When,” Dion & The Belmonts earned their place in music history. The great music kept coming as Dion ventured out as a solo artist in 1960, racking up a string of #1 hits. Over an incredible four-year run he cut one classic after another from the rollicking “Runaround Sue” to the driving “Lovers Who Wander” to “The Wanderer.” He quickly rose to the top ranks of recording artists. In 1968 Dion shot to the top of the charts once again with “Abraham, Martin and John,” a song that was as much an anthem for that era as his early hits had been for theirs. What followed in the ‘70s and ‘80s was a string of acclaimed LPs, many of which reflected his early interest in roots music. He turned increasingly to folk blues and gospel, again earning a reputation as an innovator. In 1989 Dion entered the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. One of the Hall's earliest honorees, he was inducted just one year after the Beatles and Bob Dylan and at the same time as the Rolling Stones, Otis Redding and the Soul Stirrers. In over six decades he has never stopped writing, recording and performing new music. His voice is unmistakable. His music is original and entirely his own. His story is more relevant than ever. Today, I'm joined by Texas blues singer and pianist Marcia Ball. Marcia plays her grand piano right here on the podcast, and it is nothing short of awesome, in fact it's probably the best performance we've ever had on the show. However, she's very humble throughout our discussion, meanwhile my jaw is on the ground in amazement at the talent this lady has. We talk about how she found her love for singing, the difficulties she faced during the pandemic, and what the future looks like for live music. We also talk about the relationship between Louisiana and Texas and the history behind Mardi Gras. And then she treats us with an amazing performance of her song "La Ti Da." Listen in and enjoy! “I've been lucky at every turn. Musically, personally, professionally, it's just been a gift to me. I feel like I have it all.” - Marcia Ball Time Stamps: 07:11 - How Marcia found her love for singing. 09:06 - The different genres she has played across her career. 12:23 - How she heard about Professor Longhair. 16:36 - The different shows she has lined up for the summer. 17:25 - The difficulties Marcia found being creative during the pandemic. 21:05 - Where Mardi Gras originated and what it's like in New Orleans. 23:40 - Marcia's favourite memories from Mardi Gras. 27:41 - Her emergency Gumbo recipe. 28:12 - The work Marcia does for the non-profit ‘home'. 30:26 - Combining food and music and what the two have in common. 34:44 - The different way you perceive time as you get older. 35:43 - The most regretful professional decision Marcia made. 38:47 - An exclusive live performance of "La Ti Da." 44:24 - What the future looks like for her. 45:19 - Notable influential women that Marcia has written songs about. Marcia Ball shares her life as a traveling musician, teaches us how to make real gumbo real quick, and the secrets to roux in a jar... which no one will admit to.
David Ball is one of our best traditional country singers, a regular on the Grand Ole Opry and that rare classic indie who had big radio hits in two different decades. But before he twanged us up with Thinkin' Problem, in his well-spent youth, he was bass player and singer in Uncle Walt's Band, one of the most exceptional and under-appreciated ensembles in roots music history. The acoustic trio was made up of Champ Hood on fiddle and Walter Hyatt on guitar. All three contributed to the complex sound and stellar songwriting, but it was Walter Hyatt's peculiar energy and intellect that stamped the group with his name and personality. Uncle Walt's Band's biggest fans were some of the biggest names in their base in Austin TX, including Lyle Lovett and Marcia Ball. They were truly something, but eventually they went their separate ways. Walter Hyatt died in a plane crash in 1996. Hood died of cancer in 2001. Here, Ball talks about the band and the new Anthology of its best work out now on Omnivore Recordings.
