Text us about this show.Steve March-Tormé and Michael Murphy return to Into The Music to introduce you to the title character of their new album, Dalton Diamond. This is an album just over four decades in the making having originated in a West Los Angeles bedroom as the idea of Steve along with his friend, Craig Copeland. In the mid 1980s, nine of the album's were written by Steve and Craig and two additional songs that round out the narrative were written forty years later by Steve and Michael. The feel of the album harkens back to the 1970s southern California country rock of the Eagles, J.D. Souther, Jackson Browne, and The Flying Burrito Brothers to name a handful of Dalton's influences. This episode serves as a preview of the album and Steve and Michael throw in a live performance for good measure. Text us about this show. There's no shortage of talent when it comes to jazz in NE Wisconsin and The Chalk Down Trio is proof of that. Guitarist Alec Riegsecker, bassist Andrew Wilson, and drummer Ryan Thomas are three very talented young men that have jelled together to make music that bridges the jazz and funk realms. What makes them the musicians they are is their willingness to be open to what older, more seasoned jazzers in the area have to say and learn from them. It doesn't hurt that they also pick up bits and pieces from the other bands they play in and let that inform The Chalk Down Trio's style. These days she's doing it as a member of the Willy Porter Band, in the duo of Porter Nickerson, fronting her own Carmen Sutra Band, and singing with the accompaniment of Kostia. In 2023 she released her first solo album, Room To Grow, which is a rich tapestry of original songs along with a cover or two that show off Carmen's ability to deliver great interpretations of other's tunes. Text us about this show.Dan Rodriguez and Jamie Kent have a second musical home in northeast Wisconsin. Though they both live in different areas—Dan in Minnesota and Jamie in Nashville—they have a thriving following in the local scene and a love for the same. Both have made regular appearances at the annual Mile of Music Festival in Appleton and this will be the third year they curate and host 91.1 The Avenue's annual Christmas On The Avenue event at the Fox Cities Performing Arts Center. With these two, it's good music and good times. They're more than songwriters and musicians—they're performers with a lot of heart."So Good" written and performed by Dan Rodriguez℗ 2018 Independent. Barry and Abigail discuss Just Can't Get Enough: New Wave Halloween and sample Voodoo Ranger Juice Force, Voodoo Ranger Peach Force IPA, and Voodoo Ranger Tropic Force IPA from New Belgium Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado. The Most Popular IPA in the Country Is Voodoo Ranger. So Is the Second. Abigail first saw a live performance of The Rocky Horror Picture Show in Gainesville, Florida, at the late great High Dive. Read more about this historic music venue! Barry compared Every Day is Halloween by Ministry to Midnight Oil (perhaps Arctic World or Sell My Soul?). We granted one credit at the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music to F.O.T.P. Joe Turocey for his comparison of Superfine by Cloud Eleven to Life on Mars? by David Bowie. Barry revealed to Abigail that Danny Elfman is the lead singer of Oingo Boingo. Barry and Abigail recognized Elfman's vocals in Dead Man's Party in Jack's Obsession and Poor Jack from The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, respectively. We listened to the original Halloween Theme - Main Title by John Carpenter to compare it to the version by MX-80 Sound. We also listened to several different interpretations of The Munsters theme to compare them to the version by Comateens. We shared the original TV show theme, as well as interpretations by Los Straitjackets, Herman and the Humans, The Escalators, and The Coffin Daggers. Barry shared a clip of Dave Edmunds' biggest hit, I Hear You Knocking, as well as the original by Fats Domino. Abigail entered The Creature From the Black Lagoon by Dave Edmunds into the Abigail Hummel School of Speaking Smartly About Music with a comparison to Goin' or Comin' by Terry Anderson and the Olympic Ass Kickin Team. After listening to Halloween by Sonic Youth, we listened to a clip of their song Kool Thing, which appears on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock. After listening to Halloween by Dead Kennedys, we listened to a clip of their song Holiday in Cambodia, which also appears on Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock! Introducing the Band:Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Nick Lowe. Nick Lowe is . . . wait, you don't really need a bio for Nick Lowe, do you? If there's any questions about who he is, please take the time to listen to our lengthy Political Beats episode with guest Matt Murray. In an interview that has been months in the making, your Political Beats hosts get the opportunity to spend a little more than an hour with the legendary Nick Lowe. Cards on the table, both of us were a little nervous to be speaking with one of our musical heroes. Nick made it comfortable and entertaining, as if anything else would be expected. The conversation begins with a discussion about his fantastic new album, Indoor Safari. The record is a collection of songs from EPs released over the past half-decade or so, many of the tunes re-recorded or slightly changed from the initial versions. These performances are so crisp, so lively. “Crying Inside,” is a perfect example of a top-notch, sublimely written and executed, late-career Nick Lowe song. “A Quiet Place” could be the single best band performance on the album. “Blue on Blue,” would fit in alongside anything on The Impossible Bird and the Bacharach-influenced “Different Kind of Blue,” truly benefits from the full band arrangement not heard on the version found on the 20th Anniversary edition of The Convincer. As the liner notes claim, “Indoor Safari isn't a journey back in time -- it's a journey out of time, to a music that stands the test of any time.”We begin our chat in the present but quickly move far afield, with discussions about his early career, the thought process that started his “second half” of music (starting with The Impossible Bird), his songwriting techniques, and a few nerd/fan questions near the end. We hope to have asked a few questions that perhaps haven't been asked before.Be sure to check out Nick and Los Straitjackets live this fall. Tour dates are here (Click on "Show All Dates" to see them all.) If you're out and about, you might see Scot at the Detroit show and Jeff at one of the Chicago shows. After all, we're big fans.

Eliot's line from 'East Coker', "Old men ought to be explorers", never gets... old. It is inspiring, counter-intuitive, awesome, and, yes, within our reach. And everyone's -- not just that of "old men". But I never understood it -- really -- until I met Los Straitjackets: their music, I mean. How did Los Straitjackets "shine a light" (CCR) on Thomas Stearns Eliot? Well, they did so because it doesn't take many listens to realize that Los Straitjackets are often at their best in the last 40 seconds of each track. At first you hear a fairly predictable riff on a familiar song, but then, in the last verse -- sometimes in the last 28 seconds -- they explode, and the song goes through the roof. Listen to "Christmas Weekend", which begins this cast; or "Linus & Lucy", or "Fury", or "Tempest" (which ends the cast), or "Yeah, Yeah, Yeah", or "Rudolph the Red-Nose Reindeer (!), or... About 70% percent of their songs catch fire at the very end. Now, if I want to be a T. S. Eliot kind of a man -- and play my life like Los Straitjackets play their songs -- what do I do? What makes this happen in one life, such as yours or mine? The answer to the question comes in -- are you ready? -- the last third of this podcast. The images are (1) putting your life on the right foot (i.e., death/resurrection) rather than on the wrong foot (i.e., action/consequence); and (2) assimilating the negativities of your "Voyage of Life" (Thomas Cole, 1842), which can only really happen if you are in the presence of the Compassionate Christ (Bertel Thorwaldsen/Church of the Advent, Birmingham, 1966). Without God's Mercy (as in "The Green Pastures", 1930) it can't happen. Within God's Mercy, it can happen. In the blink of an eye. I never met T.S. Eliot. Would sure love to have. But I did meet Los Straitjackets! Really did. They all autographed my copy of their single, "The Sox Are Rockin'". One's still speechless. Wouldn't you be?
