Text us about this show.Local 5 Live is a show that airs weekday mornings at 9:00 AM CT on WFRV-TV in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Millaine Wells and Lisa Malak are the hosts and these ladies love music. One of the great weekly features of Local 5 Live is bringing in a band or artists from the local music scene to perform live and share their stories. This has given those artists a good amount of exposure and it's brought more viewers to Local 5 Live. If one thing can be said of the NE Wisconsin music scene, there's a ton of support for it and Local 5 Live is a big part of that. The tables are turned on this episode with both Millaine and Lisa answering the questions about Local 5 Live and their love of the local music scene. All songs on this episode used with permission of the artists and copyright holders."Normal, IL" written and performed by Hunter Gatherer℗ 2025 Hunter Hildebrandt. Send a textBack in 2022, I talked with Ben Vaughn, whose music and radio show I've been a fan of for years. Ben has enjoyed a great career as a performer, songwriter, composer for film and TV, and record producer. He's produced records by Ween, Arthur Alexander, and Charlie Feathers, and also collaborated with Alan Vega, Alex Chilton and Los Straitjackets. His songs have also been recorded by artists including Marshall Crenshaw, The Morells, and Deer Tick. Needless to say, Ben Vaughn has encountered some colorful characters in his musical journey. His friend Laura Pochodylo, who works for Sun Records in Nashville, wrote the names of those colorful characters down and placed them in a hat. Names like Jonathan Richman, Arthur Alexander, Willie Nelson, Nancy Sinatra and more. So, what do they do with those names? Laura selects a few at random and Ben relives the stories—no pre-planning, no filter —just telling it like it was, straight from the hat. The new podcast is called, of course, Straight from the Hat and on today's episode of Frets, I happily welcome…the return of Ben Vaughn.Songs featured in this episode:“Quote Unquote” by Ben Vaughn“Asking for a Friend” by Ben Vaughn“My Reservation's Been Confirmed” – a Herman's Hermits song (one of my favorites) covered by Ben and written by Charles Silverman, Derek Leckenby and Keith HopwoodListen to Straight From the Hat here.Find music by Ben Vaughn here.Save on Certified Pre-Owned ElectronicsPlug has great prices on refurbished electronics. It's what he does with them that makes Dan's music unique and a great anytime listen. Imagine taking Paul Simon's singer-songwriter chops and combining them with Tom Petty's rock & roll, Van Morrison's soul, and Al Green's rhythm & blues and you have some great original music coming right out of America's heartland. "Straight From The Hat" The New Jersey born Ben Vaughn has put out close to twenty albums, including personal favorites of mine like Beautiful Thing, Mood Swings and Ben Vaughn Blows Your Mind. Aside from his own records, Vaughn has produced records by Ween, Los Straitjackets, Nancy Sinatra, and Charlie Feathers, had his songs covered by everyone from Marshall Crenshaw to Deer Tick and collaborated with the likes of Alex Chilton, Alan Vega, and Rodney Crowell. Vaughn loves punk and surf and rockabilly and folk and country and the blues, which explains the versatility of his collaborations. And if that wasn't an impressive enough resume, let's add these two career highlights: he penned the themes for both Third Rock From The Sun and That 70's Show. Oh, and he hosts the fabulous radio show The Many Moods of Ben Vaughn. Vaughn's discography demonstrates his musical dexterity, it also showcases his brilliance as a songwriter—filled with humor, wisdom and grace, Vaughn's work is always soulful, introspective and impossible to resist. But here's the thing about Ben Vaughn--he loves music. Whether it's noise rock or doo wop, he just loves taking it all in. And that open mindedness has gotten him in a lot of rooms with a lot of people and it's granted him access to a wealth of experiences. And those experiences can now be heard on Vaughn's bi-coastal, cross-generational music history podcast titled Straight From The Hat With Ben Vaughn. Along with co-host Laura Pochodylo (from Sun Records) on the program Ben shares stories about musicians, producers, and all the various characters from his career, with names drawn directly from a hat. www.benvaughn.org Instagram: @benvaughnmusic www.bombshellradio.com www.alexgreenbooks.com www.stereoembersmagazine.com (http://www.stereoembersmagazine.com) Stereo Embers The Podcast: Instagram + BLUESKY: @emberspodcast Email: editor@stereoembersmagazine.com
Text us about this show.In just a short five year span, Michael Grabner has become one of Wisconsin's most prolific singer-songwriters. From his first album, Restart (2021), to his solo acoustic sophomore effort, A Story I Can't Tell (2023), through the nine singles he's dropped since, Michael's growth and maturity as a songwriter is all on display. Those nine singles are combined with three new tracks for a new album called The Rock Garden Recordings and it's Michael's best collection of songs to date. Every song is performed by the trio of Michael on vocals and acoustic guitar, drummer Ric "Spatula" Armstrong, and Rock Garden Studio producer Marc Golde on everything else. Now Michael has assembled The Ghosts of Electricity, his band that brings these gems to the stage and they more than do these songs justice. Eddie Angel joins me on the show today. Eddie is a guitarist, producer, and one of the founding members of the legendary instrumental surf-rock band Los Straitjackets.Eddie grew up in Southern California, steeped in classic rock 'n' roll, surf music, and vintage guitar tones, and he's spent decades helping keep that spirit alive while pushing it into new territory. Eddie was a well respected guitarist in the California rockabilly scene, and moved to Nashville to work with the Planet Rockers in the 80's. Sometime in there, her formed a new band that became Los Straitjackets, and put out their first record in 1995. They also donned some luchador masks and have basically never taken them off since. They've gone on to record 14 studio albums, and 8 live albums. Their newest album is called “Somos” and is up there with their best work as a band. What started as an instrumental surf outfit quickly became something much bigger, blending rockabilly, garage, country, and cinematic guitar music into a sound that's unmistakably their own.Another interesting facet to Eddie's career is as a collaborator, most notably working with Nick Lowe. The partnership between Lowe and Los Straitjackets has also gone on for years and is something they both continue to explore when the opportunities arise. Collaborations with Deke Dickerson and Eddy Clearwater are also notable projects that are a great example of interesting things coming along when you remain open to ideas. In this conversation, we talk about Eddie's early influences, the origins and evolution of Los Straitjackets, and what he's learned from a lifetime of playing, producing, and collaborating at the highest level. You can get all the latest info and tour dates for Eddie and Los Straitjackets at: losstraitjackets.comEnjoy my conversation with Eddie Angel! This season is brought to you by our main sponsors Larivée Guitars, Audeze, Izotope, FabFilter, and Chase Bliss. Text us about this show.Becca Murray just doesn't have a good appreciation of the music she plays—she understands it. After stints in synth-pop band Ultra Key and rockin' out with 90-Proof, she's gone solo (well, in a manner of speaking) with her first EP. Skating By contains six well crafted original indie pop songs that display writing and playing chops that most first efforts lack. Becca writes from her own point of view as a woman in her upper twenties, but her lyrics will connect with a broad variety of listeners from all walks of life. The music is well done filled with hooks and melodies that are memorable. And live? Becca brings the goods to every performance whether that be with her band, The Wildflowers, or fronting the classic rock cover band Atomic Blonde. Writer, vocalist, guitarist... Text us about this show.Gale Bird is the trio of husband and wife Joshua and Melissa Gale and friend Sean Monahan. Hailing from Charleston, SC, they combine lots of stacked vocal harmonies and southern grit with a lot of heart in their uplifting original songs. Their influences are quite varied and include the Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Rascal Flatts, Need To Breathe, Coldplay, and Alan Jackson. Along with those there are shades of jazz, soul, and straight up rock and roll in their music. They say they're "reshaping alternative country" and when you listen to their originals, you know they're only getting started. For Gale Bird, it's faith and being honest about their convictions that has them soaring in the Charleston music scene. All songs provided by Gale Bird and are used with their permission."Lookie Here" performed by Gale Birdwritten by Joshua Gale, Sean Monahan, Matt Ciclon, and Melissa Gale© 2025 Holy City Music."Roses" performed by Gale Birdwritten by Joshua Gale, Sean Monahan, and Matt Ciclon© 2025 Holy City Music."I Still Do" performed by Gale Birdwritten by Joshua Gale, Melissa Gale, Sean Monahan, Matt Ciclon, and Lance Henderson© 2025 Holy City Music."Eyes On You" written and performed by Gale Bird© 2024 Holy City Music.Melody Audiology LLCAudiology services for all. Some shows are just a pile of shiny stuff passing over the electrodes in the hosts' brains, and this one's some of that: a rant about how much damage your pressure washer is causing (your cars and your homes), the things living in the woods and what you're doing to be prepared for them (bears in Japan, more bears in Europe, wolves in Colorado, and rioters in your front yard), Vanagons, Synchros, Dude Food, the lethal levels of fail in statist electric car manufacturing and ownership (and the lethal levels of stupid in their owners' brains), and some pretty-far-into-the-Dead-Guy-ales history of the sinking of the S.S. Edmund Fitzgerald (notwithstanding his confusion of Lake Michigan with Lake Superior...). On top of all that goodness, there's a fine assortment of surf guitar from the Los Straitjackets and the Torquays (though we forgot the Professors and Dick Dale).

He is a world class guitarist, an accomplished teacher of music, a remarkable composer, and simply an appreciator of beauty in art and life. Text us about this show.Anthony Nix is not a country musician. He's a country artist. He works his craft and shares his heart through the majority of his songs. He works hard to deliver original and honest performances both in the studio and on stage. He's diligent at what he does because he knows it doesn't just mean something to him, but to his fans. He's uncompromising about laying out who he is as a musician and as a person. Although he spends time in and around Nashville, he's proud to be rooted in the Wisconsin music scene and it's evident in original songs like "Around Here." Anthony's original music has two foundations—country and honesty—and it makes for one heck of a listen. In 2024 she released her debut album, Red Hot Lover, from which two of the tracks won WAMI Awards and in recent years joined two of Wisconsin's biggest bands, Vic Ferrari and STEEM. From starting out in a working country band at the age of ten up to now, there has been no stopping her. As for her recordings, she pulls in some of Wisconsin's top talent to write with and to back her. In other words, Kathy has the respect and loyalty of the artists around because she's earned it. Text us about this show.To say Miles Nielsen has seen and experienced a lot over his three decade career in music would be an understatement. Let's cut to the chase... when your dad is Rick Nielsen, guitarist for Cheap Trick, you get inspired to follow in his footsteps but you do it your way. Miles has done just that. Over his three decade career he not only has grown as a music maker, but as a devoted husband, father, and friend. He's gone through the heartache of losing one of his closest friends and musical partners to cancer. He's played the roles of a support player and leader in bands that garnered national attention. Yet he remains grounded knowing he's fortunate to be making music with people he loves. Text us about this show.A year ago I had Dr. Hannah Formella Zdroik of Melody Audiology LLC on the show to discuss hearing protection and preservation for musicians, music professionals, and fans alike. She returns on this episode to discuss the latest technology and strategies for helping those with hearing issues. She also gives us a glimpse into her own music theater endeavors that are helping to bridge audiology and performance. Protecting our hearing is crucial and one of the most important subjects we've covered on Into The Music, so it's our hope you find this installment as informative as it is enjoyable.Melody Audiology LLCAudiology services for all. Text us about this show. There are singer-songwriters and then there is Mathew Haeffel. It is truly hard to pin the singer-songwriter label on him because his original compositions go well beyond what you'd expect from an artist in that genre. Mathew is a songsmith who creates music in a way that a visual artist might create a striking painting. He specializes in juxtaposition, combining dark and light elements that contrast each other whether that be in his lyrics, instrumentation, or both. Often you will hear him sing pensive words over a lively beat, but listeners are often left with a bit of encouragement because of the way Mathew is able to bring the light out of the dark in his songs. A truly unique artist that is worth discovering."Didn't I" written and performed by Mathew Haeffel℗ 2010 Mathew Haeffel. Text us about this show.Patrick Zyduck, also known as Elysian Stew, is a finger style guitarist who writes in the moment. The bulk of his originals are instrumentals that paint soundscapes that draw in and envelop the listener with rich acoustic textures and moods. His inspirations for writing range from a rain storm to owls to backpacking on Mount Rainier. On top of that, he is an avid cyclist and knows firsthand how physical activity and musicianship work with each other to improve one's playing. His style draws on past guitarists like Merle Travis and Chet Atkins as influences, but also acknowledges current artists like Kaki King, Mike Dawes, and Gwenifer Raymond. Text us about this show.To say that The Mascot Theory created their new album, Cosmic Hit and Run, under pressure would be an understatement. They set out to create a concept album about helplessness, loss, grief, healing, and hope and in the process they lived it all. The finished product is nothing short of brilliant. Although each song can stand on its own, within the narrative of Cosmic Hit and Run they make for an incredible listen from beginning to end both musically and lyrically. Taking what they learned from working with producer Terry Manning and building on that, they have released what could be their—dare I say it?—masterpiece. Cosmic Hit and Run isn't just an album, it's a journey—one that you'll want to repeat often. This episode features an Into The Music first! Text us about this show. It's pretty clear when you listen to Tim Case's music that his Wisconsin roots go deep into his soul. Many of his songs have at least references to people or places around the state, but they serve as devices to tell a narrative rather than promote Wisconsin outright. It's just what he knows through his life experiences and observations, so he weaves these elements into his thoughtful lyrics. His 2025 release, Hall of Mirrors, is an album that is influenced by artists like Bob Dylan and John Prine with a sound not unlike albums produced by Daniel Lanois. Call it atmospheric Americana if you like. Tim is creating some beautiful music and using it to give a down-to-earth observations of life."What Am I Missing?," "Bloodbath," "Shots In The Dark," and "The Exit" written and performed by Tim Case℗ 2025 Tim Case. Hello friends! Eddie Angel, guitar player and founder of Mexican wrestling mask wearing, instrumental rock band, Los Straitjackets is my guest for episode 1517! Los Straitjackets have spent the last decade backing rock legend, Nick Lowe and have just released their first album of all-original material in over a decade, Somos Los Straitjackets on Yep Rock Records. They're hitting the road in the U.S. on their own after a gig with Nick Lowe this Saturday October 5th at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Go to losstraitjackets.com for tour dates, music, merch, and more. Eddie and I have a great conversation about the birth of the band, the origin of the masks (he even wore the mask during our Zoom meeting), why they play instrumental music, keeping the band going for over 30 years, playing and recording with Nick Lowe for over a decade, making Somos Los Straitjackets with producer Alex Hall, hearing The Beatles for the first time and much more. I had a great time getting to know Eddie. I'm sure you will too. Let's get down! Follow us on Instagram, TikTok, X, Facebook, Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or anywhere you pod. Send someone the gift of Johnny with Cameo. If you feel so inclined. Venmo: venmo.com/John-Goudie-1 Paypal: paypal.me/johnnygoudie

Text us about this show.Kostia is, in a word, special. He's not only a prolific composer and pianist, but one of the most genuine human beings you could ever know. Born and raised in St. Petersburg in the former USSR, Kostia made his way to the United States in 1989 and within a week of arriving he had his first recording deal with Narada Records. Over the years he has been active in the Milwaukee music scene accompanying vocalist Carmen Nickerson and playing keyboards for guitarist Daryl Stuermer (Genesis, Phil Collins). He is a Grammy nominated artist whose compositions are easy to get wrapped up in and a gentleman in every sense of the word. Text us about this show. The Tunes came on the scene only two years ago in 2023. From the start, this band was put together to be something bigger than the sum of its parts. Woodie Larsen (guitar), Jon Wheelock (vocals, bass), and Adam Hatton (drums) are the nucleus of The Tunes and when playing live they include players like Joe Sly (keys), Tyler VanderHeiden (bass), Malakai Flynn (guitar), and Jordan Miles (keys, bass). This band has a lot of fun doing what they do and the proof is in their music. Combining elements of 1960s soul, funk, classic rock, and a healthy dose of the 90s, The Tunes' sound is unique and riveting and leaves audiences wanting more. Check out The Tunes on this episode and when the music plays, crank it!Listen to Woodie Larsen's 2024 Into The Music interview here."Whenever" and "My Ol' Lover" performed by The Tuneswritten by Jon Wheelock, Adam Hatton, and Woodie Larsen℗ 2025 The Tunes. Playlist;(sintonía) LOS STRAITJACKETS “In my room”HUGO MONTENEGRO and HIS ORCHESTRA “Good vibrations”ROY ORBISON “Help me Rhonda”FRANK BLACK “Hang on to your ego”YO LA TENGO “Little Honda”THE JESUS and MARY CHAIN “Surfin USA”JOAN JETT “Fun fun fun”MELOPEA “Siempre haciendo surf”BILLY CHILDISH and THE HEADCOATS “409”THE CYNICS “Be true to your school”SHONEN KNIFE “Don’t hurt my little sister”RONNIE SPECTOR “Don’t worry baby”ELTON JOHN “God only knows”ALEX CHILTON “I wanna pick you up”KIM FOWLEY “Almost summer”SHE and HIM “Do it again”NIKKI SUDDEN and THE MERMAIDS “Wonderful / Whistle-In”Escuchar audio
