Rick Estrin and Nathan James join me on episode 131 for a retrospective on James Harman.James ‘Icepick' Harman was born in Anniston, Alabama in 1946. After moving between various locations, including Florida, New York, New Orleans and Chicago, he settled down in Southern California in the early 1970s where he established himself in the vibrant blues scene there.Harman was a formidable song writer and had his own unique view on life which he delivered through his powerful singing voice. His harmonica playing was highly accomplished but he didn't get too bogged down in the technicalities of the instrument, just playing it to great effect.Harman released numerous albums under his own name from the 1970s to 2019, and also recorded with other artists, including three albums with ZZ Top.Links:Nathan James website: https://www.nathandjames.com/James Harman appreciation: https://bluesjunctionproductions.com/an_appreciation_of_james_harmanPlaying with ZZ Top: https://billygibbons.com/2016/10/james-harman-mystery-man-zz-top-band/Videos:James Harman Tribute Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cf-z0fByTsMJames Harman interview from 2013: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SkbDA4jpB_cGrit Soup with Rick Estrin and Nathan James:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o7x1BajhVfcAlbums on YouTube:Thank You Baby: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_xc_lneR8cExtra Napkins: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVwrq57PM-QStrictly Live in '85: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XR1OEhF6Hr0&list=PLSzXohOP-AmcgBdbKmj-DNYiP6CfPTGUYBlack and White: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_0qUrM_XBwLiquor Parking: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fL9y1bydpCIDidn't We Have Some Fun Sometime album intro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1WhxC8Q1roPodcast website:https://www.harmonicahappyhour.comDonations:If you want to make a voluntary donation to help support the running costs of the podcast then please use this link (or visit the podcast website link above):https://paypal.me/harmonicahappyhour?locale.x=en_GBSpotify Playlist: Also check out the Spotify Playlist, which contains most of the songs discussed in the podcast:https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5QC6RF2VTfs4iPuasJBqwT?si=M-j3IkiISeefhR7ybm9qIQPodcast sponsors:This podcast is sponsored by SEYDEL harmonicas - visit the oldest harmonica factory in the world at www.seydel1847.com or on Facebook or Instagram at SEYDEL HARMONICAS--------------------------------Blue Moon Harmonicas: https://bluemoonharmonicas.comSupport the show

Hello everybody!! Welcome to season 3!! Do you remember hero Yvonne Smith from episodes 6 and 59! She is the abductee/contactee hypnotherapist and this season is dedicated to her 30 plus years of leading CERO (Close Encounters Research Organization)Currently they are working on a book and documentary that should be out next year. It follows members of CERO and how their lives have been impacted by having these experiences. This season we will speak to a different contactee, abductee, and experiencer each episode. My favorite part of this phenomenon is hearing the stories of the people known as contactees, abductees, and experiencers. In June 2021 GA-20 announced the new album “GA-20 Does Hound Dog Taylor: Try It…You Might Like It!,” a 50th anniversary celebration of Hound Dog Taylor, to be released August 20 via Colemine Records in partnership with the legendary Alligator Records. Stubbs has spent the past 13 years as guitarist for Blues legend Charlie Musselwhite. During that time he has also backed up and toured with such Blues giants as John Hammond, James Cotton, Junior Watson and James Harman. Stubbs also leads his own original instrumental psych-rock band, 'The Antiguas.' Hound Dog Taylor as per Wiki “Hound Dog” Taylor was born with an abnormality: he had a sixth, very pinky finger on each hand. He grew up around Tchule and Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta, as did several other black blues musicians ( BB King , Albert King , John Lee Hooker , Muddy Waters , etc.). He made his first musical experiences playing the piano. He didn't really start playing the guitar until he was 21 years old. His musical style was strongly influenced by the then rising Elmore James . In his twenties he played in the Mississippi area, where he could be heard with Sonny Boy Williamson on the legendary radio show " King Biscuit Time ". But Taylor was expelled from Mississippi by the Ku Klux Klan in 1942 because he had a relationship with a white woman. He worked in Chicago as an electrician and other part-time jobs until the late 1950s. He also appeared as a guitarist in pompous night bars in southern Chicago. He was called “Hound Dog” because he was so fond of women and chased the steppe wolfish after them. During this time he changed his previously classic e-tuning to an energetic bottleneck style. In 1957 he finally devoted himself only to his music career. In 1960 he met the guitarist Brewer Phillips . The two became friends and formed the band The HouseRockers . With the first singles such as Baby Is Coming Home, Take Five and Christine , however, they met with little interest outside of Chicago. In 1965, drummer Ted Harvey joined the band. With him, the HouseRockers found their typically loud, hard blues accent with Taylor's rough voice and his slide play (bottleneck) on cheap Japanese guitars as well as Phillips' bass lines, which, played on a Fender Telecaster , replaced the missing bass. Bruce Iglauer , later Taylor's manager, got to hear the band for the first time in 1969 in Chicago's Eddie Shaw's. However, Iglauer's boss did not want to sign a record deal with Taylor. With its own financial support, Iglauer made it possible in 1971 to release Taylor's first record on the Alligator Records label . Without knowing it, he founded the now world-famous blues label. The album was a success with 9,000 records sold. The singles Give Me Back My Wig and It's Alright became the most famous songs. In 1973 the second record Natural Boogie came out on the market. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/somethingcame-from-baltim/support

Kid Ramos Interview: Absolutely one of THE most positive forces of energy I’ve met! Kid shares some really personal and intimate stories about beating cancer and surrendering his pain up to God, his musical parents, and how they both shaped his life… and the tragic ending of his stepfather. Difficulties getting his career started, taking a break from music, Licorice Pizza, being yourself, connecting with Carlos Santana, why there simply aren’t that many things in life that are important, and more. What a GREAT guy! Kid Ramos Interview: Blues guitarist Kid Ramos has released 4 solo LPs, worked with blues harp band leader James Harman for 8 years, has played up and down the California coast, and was part of of Roomful of Blues, the Big Rhythm Combo, The Fabulous Thunderbirds, The Mannish Boys, Los Fabulocos, and The Proven Ones (#1 LP on Billboard!) Troy Gonyea has spent his fabled career working both sides of the musical street: touring the world supporting hall-of-fame-stature legends and using that unique experience to perfect his own sound. Now, with the release of his new live album, “Click Click Spark,” that two-lane journey has led the supremely talented guitarist, singer, songwriter, and bandleader to the intersection with stardom. Troy Gonyea strapped on his first guitar at age thirteen and never looked back. Before he was out of his teens, Gonyea was gigging with members of Muddy Waters’ band, playing at Buddy Guy’s Legends club in Chicago, and fronting his own trio. By the time he hit his mid-thirties, Gonyea had toured the globe and recorded with legendary performers like Booker T Jones, Kim Wilson, Sugar Ray Norcia, James Harman, Jerry Portnoy, and Anthony Geraci, held down the prestigious guitar chair in the Fabulous Thunderbirds for four years, played on two Grammy-nominated recordings, and been nominated for a Blues Music Award and a Boston Music Award. Through it all he continued to front his own band, perform as a solo act, write his own music, and record two well-received CDs of his own.

Camille James Harman:Born in Shreveport, Louisiana and raised by her adoptive parents in Lafayette, Camille James Harman always knew she was destined to take the road less traveled. Camille studied liberal arts at University of Louisiana, and while there, took on the role of prop mistress in a local community theater production. From her vantage point backstage, she enjoyed watching the actors so much that she acted in the next play and garnered rave reviews. While pursuing an MFA in Drama at the University of New Orleans, Camille booked her first television movie, "Silent Cries,” an NBC ‘Movie Of The Week,' opposite Annabeth Gish. The WW II film was shot in New Orleans, and it gave Camille the opportunity to perform with a British accent and begin building SAG credits. Legendary producer Brandon Tartikoff wrote a role specifically for her in a pilot project shot in New Orleans with actor Jim Gleason.Camille took a hiatus from acting to focus on raising her now teenage son, and she has come a long way since her first credit. This winter, you can see her in the highly anticipated film, “Vice,” directed by Adam McKay, which is set to be released on Christmas Day, 2018. The film, from Annapurna, stars Christian Bale as Dick Cheney, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld and Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush and is already receiving pre-release award season buzz. “Vice” tells the story of Dick Cheney and his rise to power as Vice-President to President George W. Bush. Camille plays Mary Matalin, Counselor to the Vice President, and counts her role as this powerful woman to be her most exciting to date. She spent many hours researching and watching interviews of Matalin to prepare for the part, and discovered that she had much in common with the now New Orleans-based political consultant. Following “Vice,” Camille can next be seen as a news anchor in the comedy film “Loqueesha.”https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6266538/Camille currently resides in Los Angeles with her husband Jeff, who is a well-known astrologer, their son Aidan, who is also an actor, and their pet cat and dog. She is active in faith-based charities as well as groups that support veterans and first-responders. She looks forward to building her list of film and television credits. In her free time, Camille enjoys visiting museums, listening to live music, and exploring historic homes and gardens. Camille and her husband Jeff are partners in a production company, Conjunction LLC, currently in discussions to produce several projects. Camille is passionate about acting, but her favorite role continues to be wife and mom.Music List: 1. The Neverending Paegent by Colin Clyne2. Berlin by Airport Impressions3. Steve Kozak is one of Canada’s finest blues artists has been turning heads of blues fans in Canada for over thirty years since he first broke onto the Vancouver scene in the mid-eighties. When it comes to tasty West coast blues guitar, Kozak’s name is at the top of the list in this nation - just ask greats like Duke Robillard and James Harman who have shared the stage with this gifted bandleader, instrumentalist, writer and singer. Gaining national recognition in 2012, Steve Kozak won a prestigious Maple Blues Award for New Artist or Group of the Year. Steve was also awarded The Ambassador of the Blues Award for 2012 by the Blues Underground Network. Stephen Hodges joins us this week on Music Makers and Soul Shakers. Stephen is an incredibly creative and grooving drummer who plays on the most iconic Tom Waits' albums (Swordfishtrombones, Rain Dogs, and Mule Variations to name just a few!), all of Mavis Staples' recent recordings, and lots of other cool sessions and albums. He worked with David Lynch on the "Fire Walk With Me" Soundtrack, and cut his teeth in the bars of Long Beach and Los Angeles in the late 70's and early 80's alongside Los Lobos and the Blasters. Stephen discusses his early days as a drummer/composer for modern dance classes, working in seedy bars in through the 70's, getting his mind blown by Howling' Wolf, developing his unique drum setup with James Harman, and landing gigs with Tom Waits and John Hammond. This is a hilarious and energetic interview with a very humble and generous musician and much can be learned from him by drummers and non-drummers alike!
This edition of The Roadhouse is focused on the 2016 Blues Music Awards. I'm featuring nominees in almost all the major categories to put together a compelling hour of blues. Diunna Greenleaf, James Harman, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, The Ragicker String Band, and Mr. Sipp provide a representative slice of the nominees and, certainly provide another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 571st Roadhouse.
Playlist: Jeff Pitchell, It Comes To Me Naturally, Erin Harpe & The Delta Swingers, Love Whip Blues, Scott Ellison, Fishsticks and Jelly, Toots Lorraine, Let Your Tears Fall Baby, James Harman, (I Am) The World’s Badluckest Man, Royal Southern Brotherhood, The Big Greasy, Rusty Wright, Love’s Gonna Treat You Right, Victor Wainwright & The Wildroots, Boom Town, JJ Appleton & Jason Ricci, Black Limousine, Damon Fowler, Third Rate Romance, JC Smith, Cold Sweat, Mike Henderson Band, Possession, Spiritual Rez, Alone Again, Orb Mellon, Love & Violence, Sugar Ray & the Bluetones, Ninety Nine Brandon Santini, This Time Another Year, Big Mean Sound Machine, Contraband, Funky Dawgz Brass Band, Do Whatcha Wanna, Balkun Brothers, Oh Yeah, Brian Charette, Late Night Tv, Mojomatics, Soy Baby.
Playlist: Danny Pease & The Regulators, Blood Sweat and Beers, Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, Trying To Make One Hundred, James Harman, Bonetime, JC Smith, Jump For Joy, Golden Novak Band, Hands On, Jason Ricci, Down At The Juke, Damon Fowler, Tightrope, Eddie Shaw, Louisiana Blues, Sugar Ray & The Bluetones, Hungry But Happy, Big Mean Sound Machine, Whoa Gosh, Brandon Santini, You Ruined Poor Me, Spiritual Rez, Wake Up Boy, Rusty Wright, Corvette Sunday, Josh Garrett, Honey For My Queen, Albert Castiglia, Till I Fell In Love With You, John Ginty/Albert Castiglia, The Quirk, Roots Of Creation, That’s How Strong My Love Is, Shawn Holt & The Teardrops, You Done Me Wrong, Jeff Pitchell, Whiskey River, Brian Charette, Late Night Tv, Mojomatics, Soy Baby.
This edition of The Roadhouse is unintentionally harp-heavy. James Harman, Jimbo Mathus, Morry Sochat, Charlie Musselwhite, and Danielle Miraglia make for an hour of toe-tapping and, yes, chair-dancing blues in the 536th Roadhouse. Though I didn't really intend to do a harp-spotlight show, it definitely makes for another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
Spring in The Roadhouse Studios bring a more airy feel than you might otherwise get from blues. James Harman, Slam Allen, Jack Owen & Eugene Powell, Doug MacLeod, and Steve Earle & The Dukes keep this edition moving. And, in keeping with that airier feeling, I'll take a decided turn toward the acoustic in the second half of the hour. Very few things will make you feel better than spring, or another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 528th Roadhouse.

This edition of The Roadhouse perpetuates the feeling that blues is truly good-time music. Albert Cummings, James Harman, The Sugar Prophets, Doug MacLeod, and Dion move us through the hour. One song leads to the next and before you know it, you've experienced another hour of the finest blues you've never heard - the 366th Roadhouse.
In the midst of a summer heat wave in the Midwest, the 332nd Roadhouse delivers a big batch of hot blues. Texas Slim, Guy Davis, Lightnin' Malcom, Roy Rogers & Ray Manzarek, and James Harman push the mercury to the top of the thermometer. It's definitely one of the hottest hours in the blues and certainly another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.

This edition of The Roadhouse is served up as a series of seemingly unconnected threads. Step back, though, and it all starts to make sense. A little blues rock, some acoustic blues, some jump blues, a couple of cuts with a gospel tinge to them, maybe a little R&B. I can't really pick out a theme, but they do seem to fit together pretty well under the ramshackle roof of The Roadhouse. James Harman, Saturday Night Fish Fry, Marie Knight, Hound Dog Taylor, Albert King - all great artists the 139th hour of The Roadhouse.
