Harvests, Heatwaves & Helpful Hacks – A Hot Week in the Garden

The veg grower podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jun 23, 2025 32:45

This week's episode of The Veg Grower Podcast captures the ups and downs of gardening during a heatwave. With the sun blazing down, it's been a challenge to stay on top of watering and weeds – but also a rewarding time for harvesting and experimenting with irrigation. Here's what you'll hear in this week's episode: Allotment Update I began the week with a big tidy-up on the allotment. Weeds had started to get out of hand, so I put time into clearing paths, tidying beds, and giving everything a proper water. The combination of heat and rainfall has helped the soft fruits come along nicely – with blackcurrants, cherries and even some overwintered onions ready to harvest. After lifting the onions, I sowed a full bed of maincrop carrots. I talk about the importance of not leaving beds empty and making good use of the space we have. I also talk about the difference mulch has made this week – particularly straw mulch, which I've used on some beds to keep moisture in. While compost is my preferred mulch, the straw's done a good job, and I reflect on how useful it's been with such high temperatures. Kitchen Garden Update Back at home, I've been experimenting with some new irrigation ideas. I trialled an AquaBox Straight system to deliver water directly to the roots, and picked up a Ryobi Stick Pump at Gardeners' World Live which helps move water from the waterbutt into the greenhouse more efficiently. Garlic was harvested this week too – including a few bulbs I grew from supermarket garlic. They've done surprisingly well and I'll be looking at how spacing and placement can improve yields for next year. On the downside, I've had a battle with raspberry runners and mares tail popping up in awkward places – including the driveway. I share how I'm managing them without turning to chemicals. Listener Letters This week I read out two emails: Courtney, a new gardener, got in touch for help with knotweed. I share some ideas on managing it and when to call in the council. Tanya is growing veg in containers and trying to save her own seed – we talk about how to get started with seed saving and how she can keep improving her soil. Recipe of the Week Chef Scott's back with a summer favourite: Broad Beans on Toast with Burrata, Parma Ham, Mint & Chilli. A lovely fresh lunch that makes the most of the season's harvest. Final Thoughts It's been a hot, busy, productive week in the garden. From mulching and sowing to harvesting and experimenting, there's always something new to learn. Tune in for all the updates, listener questions, and a few thoughts on how we manage our plots in heat like this.

Summer in 2025 is here - and after one of the sunniest and driest Springs on record, we enter the long days and sultry nights with the garden looking glorious but always looking to the horizon for a little bit of rain to keep things looking green and lush. Herbaceous borders are set to maximum colour, vegetable beds seem to multiply in growth weekly and the gardeners tan is ever present. So enjoy the long summer days, take some time to appreciate time in your garden and join the Talking Heads pair as they continue to look after the spaces they are in charge of, as well as enjoying their gardens at home.Lucy and Saul have been in the health wars recently - so much so that Lucy had to cancel her appearance at BBC Gardeners World Live, and Saul lost his voice for half the show so could neither record an episode of the podcast, nor bellow his usual Plant expert tours. But the pair are now recovered(ish) and reflect back on GWLive as well as look at some of the more prevalent questions from the public about problems and suggestions for their garden. LinkedIn link:Saul WalkerInstagram link:Lucy lucychamberlaingardensIntro and Outro music from https://filmmusic.io"Fireflies and Stardust" by Kevin MacLeod (https://incompetech.com)License: CC BY (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/)Support the show

This week's episode of the Veg Grower Podcast takes you on a field trip to one of my favourite events of the year – Gardeners' World Live in Birmingham. Each year this show brings together gardeners of every type — from balcony growers to estate keepers — and celebrates the joy of growing. It's full of inspiration, brilliant displays, expert talks, and of course, the latest gardening trends. I've attended many times, and every time I come away buzzing with ideas. What's in this week's episode? I caught up with Ade Sellars, a long-time friend and head of the “In Conversation” stage, to talk about kitchen gardening, lifestyle changes, and why he still proudly calls it a “kitchen garden”. I sat in on some cost-saving gardening tips from Adam, who reminded us all that you don't have to spend a fortune to garden well — especially with his tips on taking cuttings, bargain plants, and chop-and-drop mulching. I chatted with Kate, designer of the stunning Nectury Garden, a pollinator-friendly show garden packed with bee-friendly planting, recycled and artisan materials, and even a handcrafted greenhouse painted with honey-toned detail. You'll also hear snippets from Saul Walker (of Talking Heads Podcast) as we talked about emerging pests, new plant problems like Buddleia aphid, and how gardeners are adapting to climate changes. And we touched on the important link between gardening and mental health with Leigh, who blends his background in theatre and horticulture to create emotionally engaging gardening content — and even hosts fundraising events for mental health charities. Check out his upcoming event. Recipe of the Week As always, Chef Scott joins us to share a seasonal treat — this week it's a Courgette & Feta Dip with Mint and Chilli, a cooling summer snack perfect for sunny days. Gardeners world live Takeaways If you've never been, I can't recommend it enough! Gardeners' World Live continues to be one of the most inclusive and inspiring events in the gardening calendar. There's something for everyone — whether you're after show garden ideas, expert advice, a bit of retail therapy, or simply to feel part of a growing community.

BBC Gardener's World Live runs from 12 - 15 June this year so the HortWeek Podcast took the opportunity to talk to Immediate Live horticultural director Bob Sweet and event director, Lucy Tremlett about shows past and present. After record attendances for the BBC Gardeners' World Live May Spring Fair show held at Beaulieu, Tremlett is looking forward to some 90,000 visitors over the four days. The main stage will feature BBC Gardeners' World lead presenter Monty Don, fellow presenters Adam Frost, Rachel de Thame, Frances Tophill, Sue Kent and Nick Bailey with a headline garden. Show designer Pip Probert and Plant Geek Michael Perry will also appear.Hot Off the Potting Bench is a new plants awards feature with up to 100 launches vying for the Peter Seabrook Award.Last year's winner was a hydrangea from Allensmore. Judges include David Hurrion, Boyd Douglas-Davies and HortWeek editor Matthew Appleby. There is also a garden for the 30th anniversary of the APL (Association of Professional Landscapers) and a stand for Plant Healthy to remind "visitors, the general public, gardeners should watch out for in their gardens about bringing plant material into the country".Central to this year's show is the Make A Metre Matter campaign "encouraging our audience to turn a metre of their space, whether it's their garden, whether it's a windowsill, whether it's balcony, and turn it into something that does something good for the planet. So thinking about encouraging a bit of biodiversity into the garden, or it's thinking about growing some edibles and reducing your food miles. It's just encouraging everybody to have a go".Tremlett says: "We aim through our show gardens here and through our exhibits to relate very much to take home ideas, what's achievable, and the things that people really can grow, do and grow in their own gardens...the whole show and its background going back a long, long time is about the fundamentals of gardening and we very proudly stick to those principles."Sweet brings a long pedigree in garden shows having run events with the RHS Chelsea, Hampton Court, Tatton Park, Cardiff and Scotland's National Gardening Show. After enjoying the 2025 Chelsea Flower Show earlier this year, he said: "it certainly warms the cockles of your heart when you see the expertise of some of the growers and what they've been able to achieve". On the podcast he reminisces about the impact he had on Chelsea during his tenure."There's so many aspects of Chelsea that I feel there's a little Bob Sweet stamp on when I go around...there's lots of little hints of my career left behind there which I'm very proud of" from the names of the various routes through the show to fundamental changes to the way awards were judged. He also lifts the lid on some of the more light-hearted aspects of the show and the mischief-makers he has had to contend with over the years. Hosted on Acast. The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) is under fire. It is the world's biggest donor and spends billions of dollars a year, funding programmes around the world, like fighting malaria in Bangladesh, clearing unexploded landmines in Cambodia and Laos and providing medical supplies in Sudan. But President Trump says it is run by “radical lunatics” and he and billionaire Elon Musk, who's got the job of trying to slash American government spending, want to shut it down. They have paused almost all international spending for 90 days and issued “stop work” orders to their staff. BBC journalist Nathalia Jimenez tells us what USAID does - and why the Trump administration wants to close it.A large proportion of USAID funding goes towards healthcare and HIV medication in sub-Saharan Africa. Makuochi Okafor, the BBC's Africa Health correspondent tells us what impact closing USAID could have in this region.Anselm Gibbs, a BBC reporter based in Trinidad and Tobago, tells us about programmes USAID funds in the Caribbean. And Hilde Deman from Search for Common Ground, an international NGO that uses USAID funding in countries affected by violent conflict, talks about the impact to their work in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Tom shares two inspiring frameworks he's developed to guide HR professionals in their leadership journey. The Intentional Leader Model encourages HR leaders to adopt deliberate and thoughtful leadership practices, and the CHRO Impact Framework helps HR professionals enhance their effectiveness. These models highlight the importance of intentionality, purposeful leadership and self-reflection to drive performance and personal growth. Tom shares insights on how you can: Prioritise Purpose and Self-Awareness: Tom highlights the importance of aligning tasks with your purpose, be mindful of how you spend time, ensure your efforts contribute to your long-term goals, helping to prevent burnout and boost productivity.  Develop Boundaries: Advocating that strong leaders set clear boundaries, Tom discusses delegating tasks that don't energise you and making self-reflection and personal development priorities for authenticity and resilience in leadership. Leverage HR's Role in Sustainability: Tom discusses how, by engaging with frameworks like the UN Sustainable Development Goals, HR leaders can challenge the status quo and drive positive change on a global scale, promoting fairness, equity, and environmental sustainability.   Thank you to Hex Talent and Development for supporting How HR Leaders Change the World Is your organisation doing everything it can to ensure its people and teams are reaching their full potential?
