Joni Mitchell's rich, colorful altered-tuning chord voicings have set her work apart in its own musical universe, where the rest of us guitarists either scratch our heads in wonder or have to do dissertation-level research to unpack just how she gets her sound. Dawes guitarist and songwriter Taylor Goldsmith gained firsthand experience with Mitchell's songs when he joined her on stage—just check out 2022's “Joni Jam” from the Newport Folk Festival, which also included Brandi Carlile, Blake Mills, Jon Batiste, and others.Goldsmith joins us on this episode of the 100 Guitarists podcast. Together, we talk about Mitchell's chord voicings and progressions, her tunings, what it's like to share a stage with her, and Goldsmith wonders: Was Bob Dylan's “Tangled Up in Blue” a nod to the songwriter's 1971 album? When we wrap up our conversation, we cover a new release of energetic, forward-leaning guitar cumbia by Los Pirañas and an album of Bach Partitas for Telecaster by guitarist Noel Johnston.Check out the L.R. With the recent visit  with a real-deal 1950 Broadcaster, I had the chance to experience the unique tonal options that Leo Fender's original blend control offered over your run-off-the-mill tone control. The only problem, was that awful #1 position, that put a suffocating blanket over the neck pickup. I started searching for a modified wiring scheme, and I found my episode from a couple of years ago with Rick Holmstrom, Mavis Staples' guitarist and bandleader. In it, he described his modified Broadcaster blend wiring that made the first position just a slightly lower volume, and slightly darkened neck pickup sound in position 1. I tried it, and loved it, and am sharing it with you now. I also share 2 YouTube Channels I have been enjoying, Adam Levy's, and Shane Theriot's.https://www.youtube.com/@AdamLevyGuitarhttps://www.youtube.com/user/TheRiotguitarInfo on the wiring:https://www.askzac.com/post/rick-holmstrom-mavis-staples-my-birthday-trip-to-new-orleans-ask-zac-162Follow me on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/askzac/To Support the Channel:Patreon  https://www.patreon.com/AskZacTip jar:  https://paypal.me/AskZacVenmo @AskZac Or check out my store for merch  - https://my-store-be0243.creator-spring.com/Support the show

Today we look at one of the rarest and coolest members of the Telecaster family, a December 1950 Fender Broadcaster. To  give some context, I cover what Fender was up to in late 1949 through the Summer of 1950 with the single and dual pickup Esquire, and how the addition of a truss rod caused the Broadcaster to be born. We also take a look at what makes the Broadcaster different feature wise from the later Telecasters, including the unique blend control that would be phased out in 1952.Support the show

Wielding a fully customized war-torn and home-built Telecaster, blues-rock phenom and guitar luthier SETH LEE JONES taps into a fierce musical mojo whenever he takes his amps off standby and starts to wail (which he does quite a bit on this episode). Enjoy, as Seth reveals how he incorporates slide guitar moves, “steel bends” (courtesy of push levers on his guitar's bridge), heaps of overdrive and sustain, a fleet of cool guitar pedals, and a sprig of shred guitar into every solo he takes (including the ones on his new album, Tulsa Custom), making him one of the most exciting guitarists to emerge from Tulsa, Oklahoma — a great music town! — in recent years. This episode is presented by GuitarPlayer.com and hosted by JUDE GOLD. NOTE: Seth, as you'll hear him mention, often plays in Dropped-D tuning, and does so on this episode. If you need a refresher on Dropped D, the tuning is D, A, D, F#, A, D, low to high.

Brian, Blake, and Richard are joined by not one but two very special guests for Episode 536 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Roundtable of Chief Guitar Officers with Scott Heydt and Judd Silver  Scott and Judd have been friends for many years and after both had spent a lot of time working in the music industry they came together to create a show - the Chief Guitar Officer podcast. What on earth possessed them to do that? Madness I say! They have fantastic stories to tell and a great perspective on the music industry and we think you will absolutely love this episode. The conversation continues into a look at the state of printed and online guitar magazines and the future of music publishing and advertising. This turns into a discussion about Scott's past with Gary Vaynerchuk, and an unusual coincidence that brought all the guys together. This is quite the origin story with at least one common thread - the guitar. David Gilmour may also get a mention. The interviewers become the interviewed as Judd and Scott ask Richard and Blake about how their love of the guitar properly started and we go deep with some psychology that resonates with everyone. Richard turns the tables and we hear about Scott and Judd's early influences before talking about which guitar is the best - Stratocaster or Telecaster...Egon Spengler, VHS, Crushing It, Rockonteurs, Jim Irsay, Alexi Lalas, Fender Custom Shop...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone!We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCdVrg4Wl3vjIxonABn6RfWwContact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
