Back in 2008, when Jim Cox was controller for investment management software company Advent Software, he was invited by that firm's founder and CEO, Stephanie DiMarco, to accompany her to an investor meeting. “I just sat there smiling and hoped that nobody would ask me a question,” comments Cox, recalling one of a number of experiences that he credits with helping him to step beyond his accounting career roots. The meeting's biggest take-away, Cox tells us, was about repetition. He explains: “Guess what? All 20 investors asked six of the same questions and two questions that were unique to them.” Looking back, Cox believes that DiMarco was providing him with an opportunity to not only develop a rapport with investors but also polish his communication skills. “When Stephanie brought me along, I think she was like, ‘Let's try this out,'" continues Cox, who stepped into Advent's CFO office in 2009, only 3 years after joining the company.    Cox had been recruited to Advent by a VP of finance who had formerly been a client of Cox's when he was an accountant at Pricewaterhouse.    “Be good to your clients,” advises Cox, who credits yet another client executive with encouraging PwC to relocate him to New Zealand for a 2-year stint. Asked about his early career's lengthy tenures at PwC (10 years) and Advent (9), Cox reports that he doesn't think that he missed out by not changing jobs more frequently. “You can stay at the same company, but it's about doing different things,” he comments. Today, having served in multiple CFO roles, Cox likes to measure his stint as Advent's CFO differently since its was publicly held: “I like to say that I was a public company CFO for 22 quarters—because when you're a public CFO, you live one quarter at a time.” –Jack Sweeney

GM-backed autonomous vehicle company Cruise is set to enter its rapid growth phase, targeting a revenue goal of $1 billion by 2025.Cruise surpassed 1 million driverless miles as of February as they have been operating more than 300 autonomous vehicles in its three markets: San Francisco, Phoenix, and Austin. The focus has now shifted to scaling operations to scale into new cities while preparing for volume production of their autonomous vehicle, the Origin at GM's Factory Zero in Detroit.According to calculations by Sam Abuelsamid, principal research analyst at Guidehouse Insights.Cruise will need 5,500 to 6,000 vehicles operating on a daily basis to achieve its $1 billion revenue target by 2025, That assumes Cruise is operating in 10 cities with 550 to 600 vehicles in each location, he said, and fares of about $2.50 per mile…all which is realisticThe Dimmitt Chevrolet team in Clearwater, Florida, is pushing the border of innovation as it launched an onsite rooftop solar array that will generate more than 1 GWh of energy annually, which is enough to power 750 homes. Over 2,000 panels were installed, leveraging tax incentives in a partnership with Energy Services of AmericaThe giant solar panel array will offset about 156 tons of CO2 emissions, cover 100% of the store's power needs, and pay for itself in under five years through energy savings.Telling it like it is - Something about cooling your showroom using solar energy is peak science. Hey loves! Today's episode is being brought to you directly by yours truly!   "There's resentment when we aren't aligned with our truth – we feel suffocated or suppressed when we can't speak our truth. This is your opportunity to clear that. Where in your life has resentment held you back? Where are you going today with that? What is it that you need to reconcile with yourself?"   In today's episode, I talk about: Speaking your truth even when it's scary Having your courageous conversations through the ‘service' and ‘love' filters Why your setbacks aren't your fault but are your responsibility How to move past resentment so that you can finally heal Welcome to The Brave Table! I've gotta be honest with you love, I just needed a break and reset after 8 months of go go go! I needed space to just breathe, so I took my little ones to Clearwater beach for a few days of crashing waves and sand in the toes. But this came after having difficult conversations in both business and personal life – you know, the scary conversations that are hard to start. So let's crack that open and talk about how to have your courageous conversations.   Plus, I dive into resentment and why it's the anchor that grounds us when something goes wrong, but is also the false reassurance that keeps us held back – in the same position at work that you hate, the same toxic relationship  5 years later, etc. This is the rubble in your road that needs to be cleared.   This is a short but powerful episode jam-packed with nuggets that will heal and inspire you. On Episode 646 of Hittin' Season, host John Stolnis of The Good Phight reacts to the catastrophic ACL tear suffered by first baseman Rhys Hoskins on Thursday afternoon down in Clearwater, an injury that will likely force him to miss the entire 2023 season, and also jeopardize his free agency next year. John analyzes how the Phillies will look to fill the void and take a look at some potential options outside the organization as well. Plus, Ranger Suarez's elbow injury will force him to miss the beginning of the season, too. Too many injuries.

INTERVIEW | US Patent System Needs to Be Fixed, Inventor Rights Activist Says

An American inventor is speaking out about a law he says has significantly affected the country's ability "to lead the world in innovation and stay ahead of our adversaries.""We're a 501(c)(4) [tax-exempt organization], and our mission is to restore to America something that has been actually just totally destroyed by Big Tech," Randy Landreneau, president of US Inventor, tells The Daily Signal. "And what that is is that if you're an inventor and you invent something really valuable, and you get a patent on it, you're supposed to have the legal ability to stop a large entity from just taking it, and that is what our patent system was created for."Landreneau has numerous patents and owns Complete Product Development, which is "a product design and prototyping company based in Clearwater, Fla.," according to his US Inventor biography page. "That's what worked so well in America for 200 years, what enabled us to lead the world in innovation and stay ahead of our adversaries, etc.," Landreneau says. "And Big Tech got a law passed about 10 years ago that really drastically destroyed that. It made it virtually impossible now to stop a large entity from simply taking what you had invented and patented."Landreneau was referring to the America Invents Act, which was passed by Congress and signed into law in 2011 by then-President Barack Obama, who at the time said the “much-needed reform will speed up the patent process so that innovators and entrepreneurs can turn a new invention into a business as quickly as possible.”Landreneau joins "The Daily Signal Podcast" to further discuss the U.S. patent system and some of the challenges he and other U.S. inventors are facing today. Hawaiian shirts are a regular fixture of Charlie Manuel's wardrobe. They fit his vibe perfectly since he spends much of his year in Florida. It was during our conversation with the World Series winning Manager that he and his wife, Missy, argue over colors. He prefers the monochrome color pallets, while she likes to pick out brighter patterns for him to wear. That's where our conversation with Charlie at Phillies Spring Training begin. He's been in Clearwater since Pitchers and Catchers reported to the facility. We flashed back to the evolution of Spring Training. Charlie's first major league camp was in 1968, and back then, it was intended for getting all players the out-of-shape players game ready again. Charlie recalled having to go to the hospital during his first camp. Conditioning is a lot lighter nowadays. Then there was the Tony Bennett story. After a game in Toronto, Charlie met Tony in a hotel elevator. He blurted out, “Hey Tony Bennett, sing us a song.” Tony's reaction – and the way Charlie recalled it – was hilarious. Second to that story is the time that Charlie met Julie Andrews. To be fair, it was made better by the alternate ending that Steve Morrison imagined. So what else is Charlie up to once the season starts? He visits PA affiliates in the summer and Florida affiliates during other points of the year. A lot of guys want to talk to him about baseball and aren't intimidated by him. He is a self-proclaimed top scout in the league. If you're looking for a tip, Charlie told us that fans should be excited about Johan Rojas in Reading and the younger players currently in the camp. Great catching up with Uncle Chuck!
