Roger welcomes Robert Lawson, economist, author, and director of the Bridwell Institute for Economic Freedom at Southern Methodist University. Lawson is the co-author of “Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World.”In this episode, they discuss Lawson's firsthand observations from socialist regimes including Venezuela, Cuba, and North Korea and how central planning continues to fail the people living under it. They explore the dangerous appeal of socialism in modern political discourse, the real differences between Scandinavian welfare states and actual socialist systems, and why economic freedom remains essential to human flourishing. Plus, they highlight the power (and unfortunate rarity) of an engaging and accessible economics education that equips students with a lifelong understanding of how the world works.Robert Lawson is a founding co-author of the Fraser Institute's Economic Freedom of the World annual report, which presents an economic freedom index for over 160 countries tracking which nations thrive—and which collapse—based on policy choices. He received the 2025 TFAS Gary M. Walton Award for Excellence in Economic Education. The Liberty + Leadership Podcast is hosted by TFAS president Roger Ream and produced by Podville Media. Bruce Handys tekst i The New Yorker kan du lese her.Philip Nels blogg-innlegg kan du lese her. Denne episoden er basert på en tekst publisert i Klassekampen i 2020, skrevet av Ingeborg Sivertsen Landfald. ---Takk for at du hører på Barnebokprat, en podkast fra Norsk barnebokinstitutt.

The story was told that It was pardoned mid-fight and the news of this event made papers, which was then published throughout many parts of Europe. https://youtu.be/fmh1JeGAVP0 Here's why: almost a hundred years ago, the Austrian economist Ludwig von Mises explained that socialism, even if run by benevolent despots and populated with workers willing to work for the common good, could still not match capitalism's performance. Socialism requires abolishing private property in the means of production. But private property is necessary to have the free exchange of labor, capital, and goods that establish proper prices. Without proper prices, socialist planners could not know which consumer goods were needed or how best to produce them....Socialism also gives tremendous power to government officials and bureaucrats who are the system's planners—and with that power comes corruption, abuse, and tyranny. It is no accident that the worst democides of the twentieth century occurred in socialist countries like the Soviet Union, Communist China, and Nazi (National Socialist) Germany, where planners simply decided to eliminate populations they thought interfered with their plans. - Robert Lawson and Benjamin Powell, Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World Dr. Ben Powell is the Executive Director of the Free Market Institute at Texas Tech University and a Professor of Economics in the Rawls College of Business and a Senior Fellow with the Independent Institute. There is a disturbing trend of politicians and their enablers trying to make socialism cool again. Larry White gives it a fitting label — “Murder Chic.”First came the “communist party” shirts — a clever-enough cartoon depicting Stalin, Lenin, Marx, Castro, and Mao having a rowdy time. Then those hideous fur hats came into vogue. But perhaps most unsettling is Kristen Ghodsee's new book, Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism, which has the truly Orwellian subtitle, “And Other Arguments for Economic Independence.”Let that sink in for a second…Luckily, few are falling for the propaganda.Ghodsee's book sales are in the basement (#432,614 in Books and #776 in Communism & Socialism alone), while Socialism Sucks: Two Economists Drink Their Way Through the Unfree World is already ranked #1 among new releases in the “Beers” category; 38,000th (and climbing) overall — a full week before the release! The book is a hilarious new broadside by the The Independent Institute's Ben Powell and his co-author Robert Lawson.“In Cuba… the central planners decided they only need two kinds [of beer]… Both taste like Budweiser that's been left out in the sun.”Powell and Lawson know that academic arguments did not cause the fall of the Berlin Wall. Rather, it was the superiority of goods and services available in West Berlin that forced the Soviet tyrants to let their people go… shopping. The book demonstrates this with flair—comparing the swill from former Soviet-bloc countries to the diverse and alluring brews of the free world. What better way to dismantle the new wave of socialist propaganda than to launch Socialism Sucks to the top of the Amazon best-seller rankings before its launch?Ben Powell returns to the show this Sunday to share his journey “drinking his way through the unfree world.”Want to annoy a commie?A good buzz may be the most effective form of persuasion out there.Help set Ben and Bob's book to #1 in the Communism in Socialism category.
