Country, gospel, and rhythm and blues are the major arteries that flow to the heart of Americana musical traditions, each influencing the other through shared themes of storytelling, emotion, and spirituality. Gospel's uplifting harmonies and spiritual fervor inspired both the heartfelt narratives of country music and the soulful expressions of rhythm and blues. Similarly, rhythm and blues infused gospel energy into secular music, while country music borrowed melodic and vocal elements from both genres. The "golden age" of these genres is often considered to be the mid-20th century, roughly the 1940s through the 1960s, when their innovation and cross-pollination laid the groundwork for modern popular music, including rock and roll. This week on Deeper Roots we're going to flip through some classic old records (as we love to do) and highlight the morning with performances from the likes of Otis Spann, Merle Travis, Sue Foley, Sturgill Simpson, and a few dozen others.

SUE FOLEY is an amazing guitarist. She's a Canadian musical triple talent as a blues guitarist, singer and songwriter. With her painted fingernails, Sue strokes, strums, shakes and shimmies a six-string, unleashing a tone that doubles as her voice, loud, proud, and true. Her new acoustic solo album, ONE GUITAR WOMAN is a moving tribute to the female pioneers of guitar, the women whose music and lives delivered the inspiration and paved the way for those that followed. JAKE YBARRA Texas-born is a brilliant, multifaceted Texas-born musician. His heartfelt and literary lyrics explore cinematic themes of love, loss, and the human experience, resonating with listeners on a deep emotional level. His debut album “Something In The Water” is full of heartfelt tales that display his story telling ability, that invite comparisons not only to his songwriting heroes but also to his favorite authors such as Ernest Hemingway. The next hour of The Roadhouse is all about the guitars, from crunchy blues rock, to hill country minimalism, to a bit of southern twang, and the smooth soul of Memphis. I've got Billy F Gibbons, The Black Keys, Mick Fleetwood, Sue Foley, and B.B. King. With very few exceptions, the hour is about blues guitar, and it's certainly another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
It's an hour of contemporary blues this week, even though some veers off toward blues rock. I've got some excellent female blues artists, a good mix of regions, and a track from a very interesting tribute album. Ricci/Krown, Hitman Blues Band, Beth Hart, Sue Foley, and Johnny Tucker will keep you moving for the hour. Sitting or standing, I think you'll be dancing through another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
In the next edition of The Roadhouse, it's an hour of professional blues musicans. No amateurs, here. Dave Specter, Sue Foley, Gaye Adegbalola, Sugar Queen and the Straight Blues Band, and Corey Harris are ahead. They're musicians focused on their chosen craft and we're just listeners focused on another hour of the finest blues you've never heard.
