This episode Fred flies solo with listener request to discuss the actual cost of making games. This means everything that goes into the budgeting for the publisher: development, marketing, and manufacturing. Real world examples are used to explain the history and actuality of what a game costs and why that price tag you see at the store has a very complicated reasoning behind it. Opening Song: Never Forget - Halo 3 Closing Song: Aerith's Theme - Final Fantasy VII
We return with a (hopefully) bi-weekly lecture series on a high level overview of video games. In this returning episode, Fred and Eli discuss how Nintendo rose to such unrivaled influence in North America. The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was synonymous with the term "video game" through the mid-late 1980s in a way no other console really has since. In this episode we discuss not only how this happened, by why one company was able to command most of a market for such a distinct period of time. Songs (in order of appearance): Training Theme - Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (NES) Act 4, Part 2 Level Theme - Ninja Gaiden (NES) Title Theme - Zelda II: The Adventure of Link (NES) Stage Theme - Karnov (NES) Main Theme - Metroid (FDS) Mission 4 Theme - Double Dragon II (NES) Stage Theme 01 - Gauntlet (NES) Dungeon Theme - Faxanadu (NES)
Fred and Trees return to discuss, um, the fact that this podcast feed keeps changing all the time. Well this time it's as permanent as a podcast gets. Weekly shows, Fred and Trees, talking about video games new and old. We may have other shows, we may have more GH101, and we may soon see the return of Jam but nothing is set in stone yet. For now the two just get back into the old discussions with why Fred abandoned his lecture series, what Trees has been up to, and a few questions from the community. Intro Song: Facehammer by Ozzed (ozzed.net) Opening Song: Rock in a Hard Place - Halo Anniversary Closing Song: Trilla Death - Jedi Fallen Order

This week GH101 is celebrating Thanksgiving with guest Klaitu and a discussion on retro gaming today. They discuss the different options from actual hardware to both software and hardware emulation. It also delves into the cost involved in each option. Opening Song: Forest Interlude - Donkey Kong Country 2 (SNES) Transition Song: Witchwood - Fable (Xbox) Closing Song: The Four Orbs - Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (PS1)
Fred and Jam close out the ongoing series GH101 (but leave room for one-offs) with a requested favorite from some of our listeners: The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap. Released on Gameboy Advance in the mid 2000s, it's an interesting blend of mechanics from both the Zelda series and a sprinkle of Mario as well. It was also developed by Flagship and Capcom in conjunction with Nintendo.

Here's a very brief rundown of Fred's thoughts, plans, and enthusiasm going into E3 2019!

Here it is, the big one, the final podcast that Fred and Jam are doing on the regular. It by no means signifies an end to this show, these hosts, and especially the content. Instead it's GH101 taking a stance that properly covering games requires time and consideration, especially when it comes to picking the best medium (audio, video, article) to cover a game or topic. The rest is in the hefty 3+ hour show, so we'll just let the hosts explain it.

Topics include Street Fighter's 30th Anniversary (and Capcom's as well) in addition to the way video games look to the mainstream. Your big questions regarding future episodes are answered and the final GH101 livestream is also given a date. A prize awaits after the ending music.
GHX has returned (and GH101 is close behind). Fred opens the show with a statement about a certain YouTube streamer, Trees is enchanted by both Disney and a certain portable game, and Fred asks if gameplay mechanics should be protected by copyright.

Everyone's got a bunch of Game of the Year award shows starting around this time, but how many can say they are celebrating the titles that came out 20 years ago. Fred and Jam take a bunch of retro games, a bunch of retro categories, and make the award show we should have gotten in 1996 but never did.
As is per usual for us here at GH101, 40 games enter (20 from each host), and 10 leave. It's nostalgic, it's arbitrary, we may annoy due to the lack of Pokemon, but it's our official Top 10 Gameboy games.
Wow, another year and another fantastic episode of game soundtracks. This year GH101 was delighted to get so many listener submissions that it amassed over 30 songs and nearly two and a half hours! If you want the full playlist, it can be had over on the main site, gaminghistory101.com
There has been much appeal to the hardware side of retro gaming and with so many new products coming out it's time to get back to basics. While Gaming Tech 101 will have its own feed and episodes, Fred figured he'd give you a taste over here on the GH101 feed. In episode 0 Fred discusses what GT101's intentions are and then delves into the growing world of NES clone consoles hitting the market. From NOACs to FPGAs and even Nintendo's own "mini" slated for holiday, it's all covered in this first preview episode. GT101 will be a bi-weekly podcast.
I know that E3 2016 is not retro, but for some of us contemporary games can hold as much value as games of the past. For that reason, and because GH101 hosts are involved in the All Games E3 coverage, we will be providing those shows here. If you are not interested, just skip anything that starts with "E3 2016." We will be back to retro after E3. This episode touches on the pre-E3 announcements and brief pressers including Destiny: Rise of Iron, Watch Dogs 2, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. There is a brief discussion on Sony's choice to not bring the PS4 Neo to E3. All music is from the games listed above.

The GH101 community chimes in on its choices of the top 10 games on the console. Some are unique but clearly many in the final result are crowd pleasers.
This week Fred is joined by special guest Rob "Trees" (formerly of EZ Mode Unlocked and GH101 alum) to ask, "What's your favorite game?" They gather answers from the listeners and then have some fun with them.
Not the most popular console among the GH101 community, but thanks to a handful of people we have a short, but delightful list of games beloved on Sony's first portable. Be sure to give it a listen and find out what's coming up for our July Top 10.
To wrap up our Resident Evil/Silent Hill series (for a while at least), the GH101 team (with special guest Vos) dive into Silent Hill 4: The Room and Resident Evil: Code Veronica. Oddly enough, while SH4 has often been regarded as not originally part of the franchise, it turns out it was always a Silent Hill game and developed by Team Silent but it is a different experience when compared to the games before it. In contrast, Resident Evil: Code Veronica was originally to be Resident Evil 3 and marks the ultimate form of what originally began with the traditional feel and "tank controls". Fred, Jam, and Vos break down each game and what makes them significant iterations in each series.
Hideo Kojima, best known for the quirky stealth series Metal Gear and Metal Gear Solid has also delved into the world of visual novels and point-and-click adventure games. If you aren't aware of them, it's probably because Snatcher released on the Sega CD only and didn't clear 10,000 units sold in the US and Policenauts has never released outside of Japan. Thanks Fred's lucky ownership of a super rare game and emulation/fan translations for all other instances, the GH101 crew delves deeply into a nearly 3 hour podcast on Kojima's futuristic adventures with some of the worst shooting sequences in all of gaming.
This week Fred and Jam are celebrating the 100th episode complete with top 5 lists, listener call-ins, guests, giveaways, and tons of talk about games from "back in the day". Join us to celebrate 100 episodes of GH101!
Not only are we graced with guests Jam (@Jamalais) and GH101 alum Rob "Trees" (@Treeslounge00), but Strider gets a reboot. After that the main topic is all about food in video games stemming from a lesson best taught by "Weird Al" Yankovic: if you integrate food your product will see more success. Also introducing a new theme song by listener Jake McClenahan (@NeoJakeMcC) so let us know what you think.
This week we are trying something new. Fred is flying solo (just this week) and he's talking about Microsoft's poor messaging of the Xbox One, the way it should have been handled, and in true GH101 fashion the myriad of consoles that have failed in the past.
This week Fred from Gaming History 101 and Derek from the Playground Podcast (and contributing writer on GH101) discuss the concept of "neo retro" titles. We define neo retro as any game that looks like, plays like, or collects games from the past and releases them today.
