Join the Bonus Accessory crew every Friday as they dive head first into all things Xbox, Xbox Game Pass, & PC gaming. Many franchises are known to take some time off for a variety of reasons: poor performance financially and critically, developers wanting to tackle a new IP, and more tend to lead the conversation. But one franchise has been asked by fans to see a return for quite some time now, and of course that is Splinter Cell. While 8 years off is a long time, are we finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel? This week, we examine the new reports that a new Splinter Cell game is potentially in development, and what it could mean for the future of the franchise at Ubisoft. Does the recent reports of MEtal Gear Solid making its return at Konami seem too coincidental with the timing of this report? In what ways has the franchise potentially “evolved” in its time off? We dig into it. Also, an ex-Bungie pilar is starting his own studio with EA, Xbox is celebrating its 20th anniversary with a newly announced stream in November and more coming up on the newest episode of the Game Pass Gamecast! Be sure to subscribe and turn on notifications so you never miss a show when they drop every Friday morning!

In today's Daily Fix, we've got some bad news for all you Grand Theft Auto fans. The original, non-remastered versions of the GTA Trilogy games will be taken off Steam this week. Starting today, actually. Rockstar didn't give an explanation as to why, but they did warn everyone last week when they made the official announcement of the GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition. Gamers, of course, are not happy about this, with many bringing up the legitimate issue of game preservation, There's also the surprising lack of details as to what will be in the new versions of GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. It's been reported that the games have moved to the Unreal Engine complete with some graphical enhancements, but that's about it. No word yet on specific gameplay changes or any other extra features. So, if you want to play Grand Theft Auto 3 as it originally was back in 2001, buy it while you still can. Speaking of remakes and remasters, game development studio Virtuos is rumored to be working on another AAA remake in addition to the rumored Metal Gear Solid 3 remake. Via VGC, a LinkedIn profile reportedly belonging to a programmer at the studio referenced a triple-A remake that will have 4K support on certain platforms and "set piece destruction." Hmm...what game that features destructible environments is in need of a remake? Fracture? Red Faction? Let us know what you think in the comments! And finally, if you got yourself a brand-new Switch OLED over the weekend, DO NOT remove the screen protector that's already installed. It's there to actually protect you in case the screen itself shatters. That fancy new OLED screen is made of glass, not plastic like the previous Switch models. That thin piece of film will hold together any broken pieces and also help protect against scratches. So don't take it off! Also it'll save you a few bucks from buying your own.

Additionally, Nick feels compelled to give some VERY EARLY impressions of Far Cry 6 because right out of the gate, the game appears to be doing a few things right. Nolan gets nostalgic for Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty which still holds up remarkably well. Finally, Chris Davis shares his thoughts on two indie-games that he has been enjoying immensely, Hero's Hour and Kaiju Wars.

But, before we go, there's time to highlight some of our favourite games of 2021.   While our very fancy awards show makes up the majority of this final episode, it would be a shame not to include Huw Edwards. This week's Headlines & Hot Takes focuses on all the rumours surrounding some Konami comebacks. Silent Hill, Metal Gear, and Castlevania are all slated to be returning, so we chat about that for a bit. And then we talk about being used... Tech Corner really is a haven for hardware news.   Because we won't be around at year's end, the second ever Spotty Awards has been brought forward a few months. So, listen to us chat about some of our favourites from the last nine or ten months.   This week's Mystery Steam Reviews focuses on video games that were released in 2021. And we round out the show by opening The Weekspot mailbag to answer your Burning Questions on loads of stuff. But it's mainly you lovely listeners and viewers saying nice things.   One final note: if you did happen to listen or watch any episodes of our little podcast, thank you very much. It's been a pleasure to record over the last year. In today's Daily Fix, Tokyo Game Show is in full swing, and two of of Japan's biggest gaming companies showed us the goods. Well, unless you were looking for anything related to Final Fantasy 16. That's right, Square Enix revealed a new demo for its Final Fantasy 1 remake, Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origins. Tactical RPG Triangle Strategy got a new story trailer, which is neat. The game looks great and the team's previous game, Octopath Traveler, was a solid throwback RPG with a gorgeous art style. And the director of classic Final Fantasies 6, 9, and 12 is back with a new game called Dungeon Encounters, which is a dungeon exploration RPG. Cool! And Konami (remember them?) might just be giving the fans what they want and making new Silent Hill, Castlevania, and Metal Gear games. The current rumors involving Metal Gear aren't exactly brand new games but remasters of the older Metal Gear Solid games. However, there also may be a full-on remake of Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater in the works. Exciting! We hope this is true, as it's actually a little difficult to play the older MGS games on newer consoles, especially if you're playing on a PS5 (backward compatibility issues and whatnot). How about also giving us new remasters of Peace Walker and Acid? And, if I may be so bold, a remaster of Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes? Finally, Bandai Namco gave us a refresh of its company logo. And it's...kind of...okay? It definitely looks like a text bubble in a messaging app. Or a neon sign in front of a 90's-era arcade. And the logo wasn't all that was updated. Bandai Namco also revealed a new slogan for the company, "Fun for All into the Future." Guess that makes sense? What should Bandai Namco's new company slogan be? Put your best ones in the comments! It's your Daily Fix!

Poyo! This week on the NXpress Nintendo Podcast, Cameron Daxon, Marc Kaliroff, and Campbell Gill are joined by Eliza from Kirby Informer to break down everything there is to know about the recent Nintendo Direct, including a healthy amount of hype around everyone's favorite pink puffball. It may be a few days since the Direct aired, but even now there's so much to say about what has to be one of Nintendo's most bonkers presentations in recent memory. From the reveal of Kirby's first full-throttle foray into the third dimension with Kirby and the Forgotten Land (sorry, Crystal Shards) to the unbelievable cast of the Mario movie, this showcase packed a little bit of everything for everyone – and that's not even to mention the expansion of Nintendo Switch Online to include Genesis and N64 games, the long-awaited gameplay blowout of Bayonetta 3, and the release date of Disco Elysium's Switch port, among many, many other announcements. After wrapping up these announcements, Marc shines an indie spotlight on UnMetal, a Metal Gear Solid parody that manages to keep up a surprisingly consistent sense of humor that may even delight Kojima himself. Raiden something happened to me last Thursday when I was driving home. I had a couple of miles to go - I looked up and saw a glowing orange podcast in the sky, to the east! It was moving very irregularly... suddenly there was intense light all around me - and when I came to, I was home. What do you think happened to me? Welcome back to the podcast! Today, we're going to be talking about Metal Gear Solid 2, the sequel to Metal Gear Solid and arguably the game that cemented Kojima as a designer with an eye for details who was willing to do some of the strangest things in AAA games. And also made it clear that he really wanted to make movies. Regardless of how you feel about MGS2's plot, or many of Kojima's plots generally, the game tells its story through some of the most elaborate cutscenes and lengthiest dialogue ever seen to this point in the industry, and that was debatably among the things most discussed when the game came out. Beyond that though, this game is mechanically a step up from its predecessor as well, and does a lot more with its stealth action framework than people were used to, making use of the new first person aiming mechanics as well as a robust inventory of usable items to force its players to think outside the box (ha ha) to tackle its challenges. The game gained notoriety from the surprises it kept hidden in the lead-up to its release, and even afterward received praise for being inventive and focusing on things games usually didn't at that time. All that said, it's been twenty years since it first released, so we have to ask if it held up? Is it still a justifiable favorite MGS2 game even when stacked against its later sequels and prequels? Find out, as we talk about the bizarre twists and questionable plot decisions made in the game, the variety of ways you can deal with the games obstacles, and when the bird crap comes back. Thank you for joining us once again. The spoilers for this game are more or less a known quantity by anyone who plays games these days, but I still don't want to get too much into them here because they were the type of thing that really intrigued me when I played the game the first time. If you've played MGS2, what was your favorite weird thing that happened? Do you think it held up, or is it kind of a nightmare to play these days, or did you always find it kind of pretentious? Let us know in the comments or over on Discord! Next time, we're getting into Halloween, our favorite time of year, and we'll be talking about The Medium, so I hope you'll join us for that.

Link to Article: https://bit.ly/3AFDH8TConsole Features That Changed The Landscape of Gaming ForeverThe 5th generation of video games was perhaps one of the most important in gaming history. The transition to 3D. While a lot of games from earlier in the gen are hard to go back to these days, there's no denying the impact it had on gaming as a whole. Leading the revolution were the two main consoles that gen. Nintendo 64, from Nintendo Co., Ltd., and industry newcomer PlayStation, from Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc. In fact the PlayStation itself was the result of a sour deal between Nintendo and Sony regarding a CD-based add-on for the Super Nintendo, leading to Sony to take on the gaming market themselves. Both consoles were perhaps the most innovative platforms for their time, helping to define the way 3D games should look, feel, and play. The Nintendo 64 was rather forward thinking with its odd, but interesting controller design, featuring an analog thumb-stick in the center to allow for 360 movement at various speeds depending on how far its moved, as well as 4 C-Buttons designed for Camera control. Features that were demonstrated in its flagship title, Super Mario 64. As it was the most powerful home console that generation, the N64 allowed for high quality 3D graphics to accommodate its unique control interface. The system innovated in other ways too, such as having 4-controller ports built into the system, encouraging more multiplayer-oriented titles such as Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros., and Mario Party. The system also hosted a ton of accessories, including the Rumble Pak, which allowed for force feedback vibration in games, put to good use in its pack-in title, Star Fox 64. If that wasn't enough, the console also featured a bay for expandable RAM, IE the Expansion Pak. For as unique and innovative as the N64 was, it's biggest flaw was and will always be, its cartridge format. Only being able to hold a meager 64 MB AT MOST, cartridge size was the biggest limitation developers would have to go through if they wanted to make the most out of the Nintendo 64.That's where Sony's PlayStation comes in. While CD-based platforms weren't a new thing at the time of the PlayStation's launch, the PlayStation was not only one of the first consoles that used CDs as standard rather than as an add-on, but it's arguably the first console that was actually powerful enough to do the format justice. While not quite as strong as the N64, the PlayStation's specs were pretty impressive for its time, allowing for high quality 3D models and environments. With its combination of cutting-edge 3D graphics and CD format, the PlayStation fundamentally changed how games could be presented. A standard CD could hold 700 MB, which meant characters could be fully voiced, pre-rendered videos could be played, high-quality music could be streamed, and game worlds could be bigger and seemingly limitless. The PlayStation could finally allow for games to be as cinematic and lengthy as any good book or movie, and the use of the format combined with the console's power, made it appealing to a hip young casual audience who would've otherwise never touched a game controller. Unlike the N64, the PlayStation was able to create interactive Musicals (Parappa The Rapper, Bust a Move), Sprawling, text-heavy adventures (Final Fantasy VII), Lengthy story driven experiences (Metal Gear Solid), and easily implement popular songs in-game (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater). The PlayStation also featured other innovations. The Memory Card, while more a necessary evil than a forward thinking feature, was the first time a console allowed for save data back up independently from the game itself, allowing game data to be easily transferred from console to console. Playing MGS2 some 20 years after its initial release on PlayStation 2 in 2001 is... well... it's an experience. In fact, it's completely and eerily prescient. What starts out innocently enough as a conspiracy theory-laden, Solid Snake-driven adventure ends up turning into a shockingly timely commentary on technology, war, government, and humanity itself. Snake's and Raiden's adventure through the Tanker and Big Shell is widely considered one of gaming history's greatest, and after giving it another go with fresh, modern eyes, we're pleased to say it's still a tour de force. Mario, this podcast is out of control! I tried to help it but it's too big and mad. Welcome back to the podcast! It's been a long time since we've talked about a Mario platformer (depending on if you could Mario Maker, it's been two to three years), so with Nintendo celebrating the 35th anniversary last year and releasing the Switch port of 3D World, it seemed like a good time. So we waited a year and then did it. Our lack of timeliness aside, 3D Word was the Wii U's entry into the world of 3D Mario platformers, and like the console it was originally on it was, let's say, differently appreciated. 3D World follows the design sense of Super Mario 3D Land, a game that was on the 3DS and tried to merge the 3D and 2D Mario titles in the way it was presented and designed and this felt normal and pretty good on a handheld console. 3D World, however, puts the spotlight on some of the stranger aspects of this choice now that it sits in the same circle as games like Mario Galaxy or 64. It being different than Mario's other 3D outings is not inherently a bad thing, though, and the game is still as charming and polished as you've come to expect, but whether or not it's what you're looking for in a Mario game will be up to you to decide. As an added bonus, we'll be talking about Bowser's Fury, a game that is more in the design space of Mario Sunshine et al., which came packed in with the Switch port of 3D World. We're going to be talking about camera controls and perspective in a game that is trying to be a hybrid of 2D and 3D platformer design, presentation and absolutely nailing the musical interpretation of Mario, a game series that helped create the video game music paradigm, and we try for several minutes to remember the names of some Mario 64 levels. Thank you for joining us again this week! It really has been a startlingly long time since we've discussed a Mario game, and despite this being a newer title (in the form of the Switch port), it's still one of the more off-beat games and one we probably would have gotten around to had the port never released. How did 3D World strike you? Did you think Bowser's Fury was worth getting the game for, or maybe not think we should have devoted almost half the podcast to it? Let us know in the comments or over on our Discord! We've been going back to some older games recently, and we've got one more to go before we hit Halloween hard. Next time we're going to be talking about Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, a heavily anticipated sequel and one that didn't do what a lot of people expected, so we hope you'll join us for that.

While Shawn is an avid supporter of the Metal Gear Solid franchise, this is Rich's first experience with MGS2. Will their opinions of the game differ or be the same?  Tune in and find out!   Also be sure to check out this month's Concertcast, which features an event that we've never tried before, an album fantasy draft.  This month's topic: Top 6 Grunge Albums. We want to know from our listeners, who has the best list? As always, we are happy to hear your thoughts on the games we play on our discussion page (linked below). We will respond to your comments and are always happy to discuss the games in detail. Please be sure to rate and write a review of the show on iTunes and/or Podbean to help us increase our listenership. Thanks for the listen, we hope you enjoy the show!  Episode 86 discussion thread: http://www.rfgeneration.com/forum/index.php?topic=19591.0 Show Notes: Intro - 00:01:03 Bulls#$tin' & What's New - 00:04:15 ConcertCast - 00:15:14 News - 01:04:16 Pickups - 01:10:51 Whatcha Playin' - 01:33:31 Question of the Month - 01:47:59 MGS2 Discussion - 02:01:22 Upcoming Titles - 03:10:22 Outro - 03:15:28 Songs in order of appearance: Opening theme by Cameron Johnson of Atma Weapon (http://atmaweaponnc.bandcamp.com) Would? - Alice in Chains Second Skin - The Gits Blinding Sun - Mudhoney Sex Type Thing - Stone Temple Pilots Everglade - L7 Plump - Hole Fell on Black Days - Soundgarden

Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Ratchet & Clank. We delve primarily into the variant game play we start to see at this point in the game, though admittedly with other topics sprinkled in. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up through Bomb Factory Issues covered: voice cast, Ratchet's longer story arc, dark and snark, opposing ideas of what have to be done, building story around archetypes, attitude mascots, moving from mascots to more realistic rendering and characters, PlayStation moving to more "mature" themes, Microsoft pulling Sony, changing strategy, wanting the variant game play to reinforce the setting, spline enemies, aim down sites, using tools to create problem-solving scenarios with weapons, having lots of rewards for completing variant play, enjoying being able to visit a space a second time, sticking with a single design structure for years, fighting the Snagglebeast, what we have to look forward to, miniaturization for backwards compatibility and as a business plan, picking the right version of a game to play, not looking to fans for what they want, having the tools to talk about game design through engaging with the podcast, talking about the end of Death Stranding. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Lost, Hitman, Pulp Fiction (obliquely), David Kaye, Transformers, GI Joe, Paul Giamatti, Mikey Kelley, Michael Richardson, Mortal Kombat, TMNT, Jim Ward, Prince of Persia, Star Trek, Mario (series), Nintendo, Sonic the Hedgehog, Crash Bandicoot, Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, The Last of Us, Sly Cooper, Infamous, Ghosts of Tsushima, Spider-man (PS4), Sony Santa Monica, Twisted Metal, God of War, Xbox, Halo, Assassin's Creed, Mass Effect, Mark Cerny, Starfighter, Rogue Squadron, Starfox, Zelda (series), Spyro, Sunset Overdrive, Tony Hawk, Jet Grind Radio, Kingdom Hearts, Death Stranding, Ben "from Iowa" Zaugg, PSOne, Metal Gear Solid, LucasArts, Truffles Mochachino, Final Fantasy VI, Square Enix, Waypoint Radio, Chrono Trigger, Sebastian Deken, Bloodborne, Sekiro, Dark Souls, Horizon: Zero Dawn, biostats, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.
