Sometimes the most compelling villains are the ones who correctly identify a real problem: a collapsing society, a broken system, an impossible moral dilemma, or a truth the hero would rather avoid. In this episode, we look at four video game villains who may have been right in their diagnosis—but heinously wrong in their prescription. Time Codes: 1. Intro (0:00) 2. Metal Gear Solid 2 (3:54) 3. We said we were going to cover both MGS1 and MGS2's VR missions this time, but it turns out we had way too much fun and way too much to say about MGS1's VR Missions, so we stuck with that. We've got quite a lot to talk through like giant soldiers, murder mysteries, puzzles, and more!Episode 85: JAV Flashbang (Alleged)

In 1998, a Metal Gear Solid villain named Psycho Mantis read your memory card out loud and made your controller vibrate on its own. Players were stunned. It felt like a genuine invasion. And they loved it.In 2026, Microsoft built an Xbox assistant that could do roughly the same thing. Plus some more. Track your history, read your screen, coach you through the game. Players were stunned. It felt like a genuine invasion. And they hated it.The viral hate train began in March 2026. Two months later, the new Xbox CEO killed it.The backlash wasn't really about the technology. It was about what the technology misunderstood. Game design requires a careful balance between challenge and ease that makes it worth playing. And an AI assistant wasn't really reducing friction, it just introduced a different, kind of insulting type.So where does AI actually belong in gaming?Daybreak is produced from the newsroom of The Ken, India's first subscriber-only business news platform. Things are quiet recently. It feels like we're waiting for something to pop-off; some new announcements, or tantalizing rumors, or whatever. We have a little of that this week, though -- perhaps as usual -- it's good news mixed-up with a few questionable items. Let's start with PS5 sales, which picked up substantially in the days leading up to the hardware's global price increase. We then move into the surreptitious release of once-hidden Grand Theft Auto Online numbers, which shows a game still making around $10 million a week, with around two-thirds of its playerbase on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Then, we get into first and second party fare: More details about the unannounced (but heavily rumored) Faye-driven God of War spinoff, casting and performance capture details for Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT, word of a Bloodborne animated feature in the works, and a Metal Gear Solid film, too, both being steered by Sony Pictures. And did Insomniac's Spider-Man 3 get leaked, too? Inquiries from the audience help us round things out, as always. Why is PlayStation 2 Colin's least-favorite Sony console? Is there room for the point-and-click adventure genre in modern gaming? Will Xbox really go back down the path of exclusivity? Can we act as an effective billboard for a listener's pregnancy announcement? In a surprise announcement from Deep Silver and 4A Games, Metro 2039 will soon be announced on Thursday as part of an Xbox First Look at 1 pm ET. Are Sean and Marc excited about a new game in the series after an earlier game was canceled? Also, Asha Sharma has hit on a hot button topic not only for Sean, but for many gamers, that Xbox Game Pass is too expensive and it has led to speculation that one of the ways to combat this would be to remove Call of Duty as a Day 1 game, but whether this happens or not, other measures must be taken if they want to lower the cost for Microsoft internally and thus be able to lower the cost for gamers as well. Sean and Marc discuss some strategies Asha and Co could implement to make this a reality. Plus, Sean's been playing another indie RPG in Dosa Divas, the last title from Outerloop games, and the mash-up of music game and beat-em-up in Dead as Disco, Marc has some ranting and raving to do about Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Epic and Disney are making an Extraction Shooter, Amazon Luna is removing purchased games, Xbox finally gets an achievements overhaul, Marathon costs a lot of money, there's finally been movement on a Metal Gear Solid movie and more! You can also watch this episode in video form on the W2M Network Youtube Channel, please give us a like, comment on the episode, and give the channel a subscribe and follow as well: https://youtube.com/live/sJhfjDXxAd8Listen as a podcast and give us a review on these platforms... After 20 years of development hell, Metal Gear Solid is finally becoming a movie with Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein attached, and Hideo Kojima doesn't appear to be part of the production. Netflix greenlights Extraction 3 with Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba returning for summer 2026 production in Sydney and Europe, continuing Tyler Rake's story from the Extraction 2 cliffhanger. In a stunning admission, Disney and James Cameron are discussing making future Avatar movies "cheaper and shorter" after Avatar: Fire and Ash earned $1.4 billion with insiders calling the franchise "culturally exhausted" despite the massive box office. Jonathan Majors and co-star JC Kilcoyne fell six feet through an unsecured window on the set of his Daily Wire action movie comeback vehicle, with Kilcoyne requiring stitches across both hands; the incident sparked a crew strike after over half the production team walked off citing safety concerns including falling props, black mold, missing oversight, and a special effects supervisor with a prior explosives conviction, while producers responded by saying they "don't negotiate with communists." Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlights RoboCop series reboot for Prime Video under new TV chief Peter Friedlander, with Peter Ocko as showrunner and James Wan executive producing, reviving the franchise after years in development limbo and previous failed attempts at legacy film sequels. Plus: Cameron potentially passing Avatar franchise to younger director or finishing the story as novels, Lipovsky and Stein's hot streak includes Gremlins 3 and animated Venom movie, and the question of whether Avatar 4 and 5 need to happen after $6.7 billion across three films. Every story is either franchise resurrection, franchise exhaustion, or production chaos. The Nerdpocalypse is a weekly podcast covering the latest movie news, TV show news, trailer reactions, and pop culture commentary. For episode 285, I'm joined once again by my co-host Myles Hughes, with producer Steve Prusakowski working behind the scenes. We recorded this episode last week, due to my vacation and Myles' show, so it's not the timeliest of topics, but we still have some good stuff. There's some chatter about the new Faces of Death film (reviewed by yours truly here), though the bulk of our time is spent on Hideo Kojima, the legendary video game designer. We teased a periodic "Kojima Korner" segment months ago, so here it is, in all its strange glory. Between the Death Stranding and Metal Gear Solid franchises, there's a ton to cover. As always my friends and faithful listeners/readers, I do hope you all enjoy the latest episode of the Awards Radar Podcast, our 285th one to date (here's to many more). Of course, feel free to revisit the previous installments by clicking the Podcast tab (here) on the top of the page. Plus, listen to us on Apple Podcasts (iTunes), Spotify, and other platforms. More to come each and every single week, so from the bottom of my heart, thank you for listening!
We review Studio Ghibli's most overlooked, and arguably underestimated film, Ocean Waves, a subtle, bittersweet hymn to nineties teenage youth, centered around a love triangle between two high school friends and a pretty, new female transfer student, that perfectly evokes the nostalgia of youthful romance. Tune in for the full review! Timestamps: [00:00] Intro + The films of Metal Gear Solid 3, Robotrix, Sketchy, Kingdom, Saint Seiya [51:55] Review: Ocean Waves (1993) [2:26:10] Bluesky Comments
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we begin a new series on The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask. We of course set the game first in its time and at Nintendo before turning to the opening and the feel of the game. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Through the first Clock Tower entry Issues covered: our ten-year anniversary, 2000 in games, a little timeline of Zelda, making a sequel on a short development cycle, reusing engines and making a better version of your game, reusing technology, switching from cartridges to optical media, asset reuse for characters, pricing changes and getting your money's worth, falling into the warm bath, consumptive conservatism, the strange opening and some title cards, us not remembering things about Navi, choosing the legend based on the hardware or the design idea, fitting the legends together, a continuation of Ocarina, film analogues, wanting to be in the room where it happened, presenting a known quest fabric to present you with not knowing very much, getting your ocarina back to reuse a mechanic, Skull Kid as marionette, getting new masks and therefore new powers, a diversion into a film, an unsettling feel to conversations, talking about RPGs and feeling the pressure of the main plot (or not), a lower-priority feature, thinking about your audience and what types of players you have, writing quality to support your main quest, admitting you're a video game, a debatable priority, building it into your character, how we play games heroically or not, where's the wish fulfillment. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: PlayStation 2, The Sims, Deus Ex, Final Fantasy IX, Diablo II, Baldur's Gate II, RE: Code Veronica, Chrono Cross, Pokemon Yellow, Thief II, SEGA DreamCast, Spyro: Year of the Dragon, Vagrant Story, SSX, Skies of Arcadia, Rayman 2: The Great Escape, Paper Mario, No One Lives Forever, Donkey Kong Country (GBC), Crazy Taxi, Soul Calibur, Jet Set Radio, Star Wars: Starfighter (series), Smuggler's Run, Eiji Aonuma, Shigeru Miyamoto, Uncharted 2, Mass Effect 2, Ultima (series), Warren Spector, Richard Garriott, Ultima Underworld, Jedi Knight, Outlaws, Full Throttle 2, RTX Red Rock, Gladius, SquareSoft, Nintendo 64/GameCube, Twilight Princess, Roblox, Fortnite, Minecraft, LEGO, Capcom, Groundhog's Day, Outer Wilds, Rogue, Run Lola Run, A Trip to the Moon, Georges Méliès, Breath of the Wild, King of Masks, ColonelKovalyo, Morrowind/TES (series), Fallout (series), Metal Gear Solid, Republic Commando, Halo: Infinite, Paul Crocker, Troy Mashburn, Justin Dinges, Richard Lemarchand, Clint Hocking, Naughty Dog, Crystal Dynamics, Insomniac, Spider-Man (series), Sucker Punch, Ghosts of Tsushima (series), Sasha, Symphony of the Night, Lani Lum, Hitman (series), Dwarf Fortress, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: More Majora's Mask! Notes: The word Brett was searching for was "optical" media. We regret the brain fog and blame the cold medicine.
