On this week's episode of The Game Deflators Podcast, John and Ryan share the latest additions to their gaming collections before diving into what they're currently playing—John continues his long trek through The Witcher, while Ryan experiences Metal Gear Solid for the very first time. The duo then shift gears to industry news, discussing Nintendo's recent revelation about the percentage of Switch 2 owners who upgraded from the original Switch, Tencent's unusual “Mickey Mouse defense” in its court battle with Sony, and the U.S. Patent Office's decision to reexamine Nintendo's patent on summoning mechanics. Wrapping things up, the guys take a nostalgic detour with a quirky retro review of Mega Man Soccer for the SNES, debating whether this oddball spin-off is a hidden gem or simply a relic best left in the past. 00:00 Introduction to the Podcast and Current Games 03:21 Nintendo's Patent Issues and Market Trends 06:02 Exploring the Witcher Series and Gameplay Experiences 09:04 Ryan's Metal Gear Solid Journey 12:06 Dungeons & Dragons Update 15:17 Nintendo's Switch 2 Sales and Consumer Loyalty 18:13 Nintendo's Patent Controversy 28:56 Patent Controversies and Gaming Mechanics 32:43 The Impact of Competition on Nintendo 34:44 Crafting Games and Market Dynamics 36:53 Trademark Battles and Character Design 45:29 Mega Man Soccer: A Frustrating Experience 55:22 Outro Want more Game Deflators content? An old piece of games industry lore has recently reemerged, and it has people wondering about a tantalizing what-if. Back in 1999, The Matrix hit theaters, and the co-creators of the film happened to have been huge fans of Hideo Kojima, himself a year removed from the launch of Metal Gear Solid. And, as was reported at the time, there was potential that Konami would allow Kojima to pursue a licensed Matrix game post-MGS. A lot of new information has since emerged about what did and didn't happen here, and it makes for a great conversation starter. So let's lean into it, shall we? Our conclusion: Perhaps Kojima doing MGS2 instead of a Matrix game means he likely dodged a bullet (pardon the pun). Other news this week includes some quiet updates seemingly being made to PlayStation Portal's functionality, leaks from Bluepoint's cancelled God of War game, the most recent China Hero Project title in the form of Loulan: The Cursed Sand, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! Following Freedom Wars, Patapon, and Everybody's Golf, what should Sony's and Bandai Namco's next collaborative re-release be? Do PC players have any reason to invest in the modern PlayStation ecosystem? Will the culture war consume Naughty Dog's Intergalactic? Does Colin type so fast that his keyboard smokes? In episode 19 of (Pop) Cultural Marxism, Isi and Ajay are joined by fellow BISR faculty Joseph Earl Thomas to discuss Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch Productions' much-anticipated sequel to Ghost of Tsushima. To kick off the episode, Isi and Ajay chat about recent cultural news and highlights, from the Japanese government calling on OpenAI to refrain from using anime and manga as training data, to the #SwiftiesAgainstAI campaign, to Paul Thomas Anderson's One Battle After Another (2025). Turning to Ghost of Yotei, Isi, Ajay, and Joseph consider where the game succeeds (its strong start, visual beauty, sharp soundtrack, and the satisfying chunkiness and texture of its combat scenes) and where it doesn't (its loadout system, simplistic puzzles, dearth of opportunities for stealth mode, and social and political quandaries its narrative and design raise). They explore the films and television shows that influenced Yotei—from Lady Snowblood and Samurai Champloo to the films of Takashi Miike, Akira Kurosawa, and Sergio Leone) and ask whether and where the game successfully incorporates cinematic techniques and conventions into its storyline. Along the way, they discuss the game's dicey depiction of the Ainu and the colonization of Hokkaido, consider whether the pleasure of open-world gaming has diminished or transformed in the years between Yotei and Tsushima, and interrogate the shape of the game's revenge plot. In this episode of Ojai Talk of the Town, we sit down with artist Tom Pazderka — a Czech-American painter, sculptor, writer and thinker whose journey from communist Czechoslovakia to America as a teenager has deeply shaped his practice. Born in Český Brod in 1981 and emigrating to the U.S. at age 12, Pazderka says those early years of dual identity and upheaval still echo in his work. LUM+4LUM+4MeetFactory+4We explore his recent achievements — his solo exhibition at the Carolyn Glasoe Bailey Foundation and his award of a residency at Taft Gardens — and how his practice engages with themes of memory, ideology, home and the stark beauty of process. (Pazderka often burns wood panels, layers ash and oil paint and works in monochrome to evoke both the material and metaphoric weight of his experience.) Bender Gallery+1We also talk about how Ojai has become both studio and sanctuary — how the landscape and quiet enable his reflections, and how this community intersects with his work of reinvention, belonging and creation. Join us for a rich conversation about art, exile, finding home and making something new out of what we leave behind. We also talked about El Chapo Traphouse, Slavoj Zizek and Metal Gear Solid. We did not talk about Rene Girard, Martin Heidegger or Grand Theft Auto 6.Learn more about Tom and his art at https://tompazderka.com/home.html
Kevin Nash and Sean Oliver stare straight at the end of the world this week. From doomsday conspiracies and nuclear torpedoes to fake Twitter wrestlers and open carry in Florida, the guys explore what it means to live in an era where every day feels like the last. Nash talks about a 6'10” model, a second moon, his social media firestorms, and what he'd do if given absolute power. Then it's back to sports and spectacle: Monday Night Football vs. Monday Night RAW, Dak Prescott's ceiling, the Lions' redemption, and WWE's billion-dollar balancing act in Saudi Arabia. Kevin opens up about marriage, mistakes, and the hard-earned wisdom that comes after a lifetime of highs, losses, and locker room lessons. It's dark, funny, honest, and more than a little fatalistic. The world might be ending—but Nash and Oliver will still have a mic in front of them. In honor of the 25th Anniversary of The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask, we have a real treat. Originally for the $5 Patrons, we have unlocked one of our longest and most in depth episodes of Novel Not New, and it's available just in time for the spooky season. We hope you enjoy. Ahhh, Majora's Mask. A real odd duck in the Zelda series. There are weirder ones, sure: that Tingle DS game is pretty strange. In its own mundane way, Link's Crossbow Training is quite bizarre. But those are mere spinoffs. Majora's Mask adopts its own weird persona while managing to be a full Zelda game. The first Zelda led by Eiji Aonuma. The one that was gonna be for the 64DD. And for my money, one of the best. Let's see what lies behind the mask. It's week 3 of the Spooktacular Express and this is, without a doubt, the scariest episode we've ever done. Put on your helmets, tune in and drop out as we take you to the realm of your VR nightmares. To make things even spookier, we've enlisted the "help" of an amporphous, soulless, faceless monster: generative AI. That's right, we're combining a game series with AI Slop(TM) to create the most terrifying VR experience possible. Andrew is taking us back to a game we almost remember. Kyle is taking us to the government. Todd is taking us to a pervert cave. *DISCLAIMER: This episode is a bit. We here at DT!HQ think that AI sucks and we don't condone its use in creative spaces.

No, you're not still in a dream: Metal Gear Solid 3 is now over two decades old. Despite its age, the peak of Hideo Kojima's tactical espionage action series remains more relevant than ever thanks to a shiny, new remake released this year. But is Delta's faithfulness its fatal flaw? On this episode, join Bob Mackey, Maddie Copp, and Brendan James (of the Blowback podcast and Chapo Trap House's new MGS miniseries) as the crew decides if feeding on a tree frog in stunning 4K is truly worthwhile. [School of Everything Else 2025] This is a follow-up to our 2021 episode on the legendary 1998 original PS1 Metal Gear Solid. This time I have brought in Willow to explore the two major PS2 instalments. We begin with what feels like creator Hideo Kojima answering the impossible question as to how to improve upon his first masterpiece (which goes so far beyond the two MSX games as to leave them feeling like prototypes) by trolling the fanboys who wanted a power fantasy. In the most audacious bait-and-switch of all time, our grizzled hero Solid Snake is snatched away from our control, and instead we are slid into the skin-tight bodysuit of blonde-haired rookie, Raiden. What follows is metatextual in the extreme, frequently absurd, occasionally groan-inducing and at times frighteningly prescient. Then we go back in time to the mid-1960s with Snake Eater; an epic Cold War crawl through the Russian jungle. This entry in the series houses one of the most memorable and tragic antagonists in video gaming history, coupled with one of the most powerful conclusions. This one, with its overly complex camouflage, foraging and first-aid most definitely warranted its recent Delta remake. In my playthrough the mechanics effected the story in a way that even meta-minded Kojima could not have intended. (NOTE: These were originally released as barebones, raw footage After School Club episodes. This presentation involved an editorial overhaul with music and game clips finally in place.) Next Week: Django Unchained

THE STUCKMANIZED INTERVIEW!! From YouTube Critic to Horror Director! Why He Quit Reviewing "Bad" Movies & the Personal Trauma That Inspired SHELBY OAKS. — Greg Alba sits down with Chris Stuckmann for one of our most personal, craft-focused conversations yet. We cover the full journey from YouTube film critic to feature filmmaker, the decision to stop reviewing movies he dislikes (and the rise of “performative mocking” online), and how fatherhood and a former religious background (ex–Jehovah's Witness) shaped his storytelling. We dig into SHELBY OAKS (theatrical release Oct 24, with early Thurs night shows Oct 23): inspirations like Lake Mungo and Noroi: The Curse, why Japanese horror gets under the skin, M. Night Shyamalan's influence (faith vs. fear), and how Chris writes with the edit/shot list in mind. Production talk galore: 20-day indie shoot in Ohio, a year of prep, DP Andrew Baird, why the First AC (focus puller) is the unsung set hero, PAs saving the day, and how star Camille Sullivan (Hunter Hunter) elevated scenes so intensely the chest mic captured her heartbeat; plus working with Sarah Durn and Keith David (The Thing, They Live). Industry context: Mike Flanagan producing, NEON distributing, The Newton Brothers scoring, festival reactions (Fantastic Fest, LA premiere), and how being on set changed the way Chris now reads reviews and watches indie films. We also hit fun stuff: Metal Gear Solid directional-mic jokes, Tarantino vs. Scorsese-style self-watching, first horror clips he'll show his kids (Jaws, Jurassic Park moments), comic-book horror he'd love to tackle (Clayface, Scarface, Scarecrow), and why he still feels like “a guy from Ohio who got it done.” If you're into horror filmmaking, YouTube career arcs, screenwriting, directing, faith and art, or modern indie distribution, this one's for you. For our 5 year anniversary special we took a look at our backlogs and voted a single game for each person to finally beat and cross off the list. On this episode we see what everyone's true colors are and if they actually stood by their word to play those games. Does Brian finally beat Elden Ring? Does Darkside finally play Metal Gear Solid 4? Does Sonic Frontier have a chance of meeting Melbro's hype game expectations? Tune in to find out all that and more! But before we get into all that, we take some time to look at our fantasy bracket and how our games list of 2025 releases is doing. For some of us, it's not going too well. Who would have know The Hobbit: Tales from the Shire would be a bust? If you want to check out our Fantasy roster, please check us out by going to www.fantasycritic.games and searching for 'The Beats'.

With practically every “important” PlayStation 2 game being remastered, remade, and reimagined, it wasn't a surprise when Konami announced Metal Gear Solid Delta. The question wasn't “would it exist?”, but “should it exist?” This week, The Besties discuss why Metal Gear Solid 3 benefits from a high-definition, low-tweak update. And they debate just how loyal a remake should be to its source material. Get the full list of games (and other stuff) discussed at www.besties.fan. Want more episodes? As the clock ticks down toward the looming release of Hollow Knight Silksong, we say goodbye to a bygone era. Strangely enough, that era ends with us revisiting three established franchises with vastly different approaches to modernization. Nick and Chris Davis talk about the impressive - but slightly unambitious - remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Brad delves into Shinobi: Art of Vengeance which has reinvented the franchise with a shift of genre and a beautiful new coat of paint. Meanwhile, Krispy declares No Man's Sky: Voyagers to be the ultimate expansion which softens the barrier-to-entry and out Starfield's Starfield. In 1998, the world was ruled by Rayman. You could not go anywhere without seeing Rayman street art. Thousands of children died attempting to cut their own limbs off and suspend them from midair. All that changed when Solid Snake was brought into the third dimension. Brendan and Felix kick off their journey through the greatest story ever told by surfacing onto Shadow Moses. This is where Solid Snake realized he could be more than just a paid killer, Meryl Silverburgh witnessed the ugly reality of war, Roy Campbell was promoted from uncle to father, and Liquid Snake didn't actually achieve much of anything besides scoring some sunglasses off of a former member of his dad's love triangle. Put on your sneaking suit, let some strange woman shoot some crap into your arm, and soak your cardboard boxes in urine. It's time to fight your brother through various states of undress.

Sony is a many-tendrilled corporation, which can be both a blessing and a curse. But in fully leveraging all that the wider company does well, it seems they're closer than ever to achieving the "One Sony" goal from years and decades past. Enter Physint (sometimes typed PHYSINT, for some reason), a Hideo Kojima-led project revealed last year as a mysterious cross-pollination between PlayStation and Sony Pictures, one that appears to go into a distinctly Metal Gear Solid-like direction. With Death Stranding 2 now in the past, Kojima is confirmed to be working on Physint itself, presumably for PlayStation 6, which raises some questions, like: What will the game be like? When will it come out? Will it be a commercial success? We know so little about it, and yet, that's never stopped us before, so why start now? Plus: Arrowhead rather blatantly teases a Helldivers 2/Halo crossover, Strauss Zelnick expresses confidence in GTA6's Spring '26 release window and promises that BioShock 4 will indeed launch one day, rumors percolate about upcoming Resident Evil remakes, Crimson Desert gets delayed, PUBG is the next game to reveal it's leaving PlayStation 4 behind, and more. Then: Listener inquiries! What's the best stoner game? Are people overreacting to recent PlayStation executives' chatter about moving away from hardware? Is Danganronpa actually bad? Did we actually (and unintentionally) get someone fired from their job? Download Cash App Today: https://capl.onelink.me/vFut/ty57yree #CashAppPod.
