Ep. 42 - The Great Escape & Escape from New YorkThis week, we are escaping into the worlds of two films video game auteur Hideo Kojima considers massive inspirations: John Sturges' The Great Escape (1963) and John Carpenter's Escape from New York (1981). These classic escape thrillers provided the structural blueprint and antihero swagger for Kojima's gaming masterpiece Metal Gear Solid. We look at how The Great Escape defined high stakes stealth mechanics and tension on screen, while Snake Plissken's dystopian, punk rock cynicism birthed Solid Snake himself. It is a double feature about cinematic cross-pollination, the evolution of antiheroes, and how obsession turns beloved media into groundbreaking art. Whether it is Steve McQueen jumping fences or Kurt Russell sneering at the government, both films prove that great video games owe everything to classic action cinema.

Gavin Brivik is the latest guest on The Film Scorer! I've been familiar with Gavin's work for quite a while, probably dating back to his score for the 2021 film Wild Indian, which was one of those situations where I hear someone making great music on under the radar indie films and wonder when they're going to break out. How to Blow Up a Pipeline helped put Gavin on the map while scoring seasons one and two of The Pitt has really changed things, earning him an Emmy nomination in the process. One of the driving keys to Gavin's success, in my opinion, is that he's a longtime listener to the show, which is actually how we start the conversation and why it has an in media res beginning - it was too good for me to keep out. All this is just window dressing, however. While we touch on The Pitt, Pipeline, and my own Film Scorer project, we really planned to dig into his latest score: Faces of Death, which is sort of a legacy sequel to the 1978 film of the same name. As a result, we end up going down perhaps the most philosophical conversation that's ever been had on the show, largely stemming from the question of "What makes a piece of art evil?" and going from there. But don't despair, there's still plenty of film music conversation, and we even break the news that Gavin is scoring the Rainbow Six Siege games series, which includes a collaboration with Metal Gear Solid. Gavin's score for Faces of Death, and much of his other music, is available on all major platforms while the film itself is now available on Shudder. You can find out more about Gavin on his website.

We're going back to the very beginning of our journey and revisiting MGS1 with it's Gamecube remake, Twin Snakes. As one would expect, we had a great time overall especially thanks to Ryuhei Kitamura's ridiculous cutscenes. And Speaking of Kitamura, we also watched his 2000 film, Versus which love it or hate it, there's nothing else like it.Episode 87: Notacon

After we had a way better than expected time with MGS1's VR missions, it's only fitting that we find ourselves a little let down by MGS2's VR missions. There may be more missions, but there is way less variety, and not as much of the unique missions that MGS1 had to offer. But don't worry, we make up for the lacking VR missions by getting sidetracked on various topics such as: God of War, Woodkid, Gamera, Hugh Jackman, Metal Gear Survive, and much more!Episode 86: THE Dr. Thomas Koppelthorn

Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up through Displace Issues covered: a wry tone, avoiding technobabble, countering drama with comedy, who various characters are talking to, layering in narrative, setting games in real places, consumer cultures, global customer bases, stepping over a line, getting some Sam time, delivering a variety of types of experience through a game mechanic, detecting player stories, guards becoming keys, different ways to tackle bank lasers, infinitely recursive stacks and punch cards, talking to the old guy, the many uses of a sticky camera, using quick save as a gadget, fire and alt-fire, load-outs, multiplayer asymmetry, pacing of play, whether every role was equally fun to play, office buildings, nuanced level design, a long way around to a briefcase (aka a not-so-brief-case), a high quality bar, cloth sims, high fidelity shadows, integrating new technical features into gameplay, physically-based rendering, making artistic and design choices that support the design. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: William Shakespeare, Hamlet, Metal Gear Solid (series), Hitman (series), Thief (series), Ghost Recon (series), James Franco, Jonah Hill, The Interview, Jack-Ax (series), Sony, Bourne (series), Grand Theft Auto (series), Far Cry (series), Marvel Cinematic Universe, Assassin's Creed (series), America's Army, Evolve, Dead by Daylight, Interstate '76, Xbox, PlayStation, Unreal, Clint Hocking, Harley Baldwin, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia.    Next time: Finish the game? Players were stunned. It felt like a genuine invasion. And they hated it.The viral hate train began in March 2026. Two months later, the new Xbox CEO killed it.The backlash wasn't really about the technology. It was about what the technology misunderstood. Game design requires a careful balance between challenge and ease that makes it worth playing. Things are quiet recently. It feels like we're waiting for something to pop-off; some new announcements, or tantalizing rumors, or whatever. We have a little of that this week, though -- perhaps as usual -- it's good news mixed-up with a few questionable items. Let's start with PS5 sales, which picked up substantially in the days leading up to the hardware's global price increase. We then move into the surreptitious release of once-hidden Grand Theft Auto Online numbers, which shows a game still making around $10 million a week, with around two-thirds of its playerbase on PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. Then, we get into first and second party fare: More details about the unannounced (but heavily rumored) Faye-driven God of War spinoff, casting and performance capture details for Hideo Kojima's PHYSINT, word of a Bloodborne animated feature in the works, and a Metal Gear Solid film, too, both being steered by Sony Pictures. And did Insomniac's Spider-Man 3 get leaked, too? Inquiries from the audience help us round things out, as always. Why is PlayStation 2 Colin's least-favorite Sony console? Is there room for the point-and-click adventure genre in modern gaming? Will Xbox really go back down the path of exclusivity? The Nerdpocalypse
Metal Gear Solid Movie Happening, Avatar Getting Cheaper, Jonathan Majors Window Fall

After 20 years of development hell, Metal Gear Solid is finally becoming a movie with Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein attached, and Hideo Kojima doesn't appear to be part of the production. Netflix greenlights Extraction 3 with Chris Hemsworth and Idris Elba returning for summer 2026 production in Sydney and Europe, continuing Tyler Rake's story from the Extraction 2 cliffhanger. In a stunning admission, Disney and James Cameron are discussing making future Avatar movies "cheaper and shorter" after Avatar: Fire and Ash earned $1.4 billion with insiders calling the franchise "culturally exhausted" despite the massive box office. Jonathan Majors and co-star JC Kilcoyne fell six feet through an unsecured window on the set of his Daily Wire action movie comeback vehicle, with Kilcoyne requiring stitches across both hands; the incident sparked a crew strike after over half the production team walked off citing safety concerns including falling props, black mold, missing oversight, and a special effects supervisor with a prior explosives conviction, while producers responded by saying they "don't negotiate with communists." Amazon MGM Studios officially greenlights RoboCop series reboot for Prime Video under new TV chief Peter Friedlander, with Peter Ocko as showrunner and James Wan executive producing, reviving the franchise after years in development limbo and previous failed attempts at legacy film sequels. Plus: Cameron potentially passing Avatar franchise to younger director or finishing the story as novels, Lipovsky and Stein's hot streak includes Gremlins 3 and animated Venom movie, and the question of whether Avatar 4 and 5 need to happen after $6.7 billion across three films. Every story is either franchise resurrection, franchise exhaustion, or production chaos. The Nerdpocalypse is a weekly podcast covering the latest movie news, TV show news, trailer reactions, and pop culture commentary.
