I've said this before: if I had a time machine, I know exactly what I'd do with it.  No, I wouldn't steal a sports almanac or try to get my parents to kiss at the big dance. I've already graduated high school, so I wouldn't use it to pass my history final, either. No, I would head back in time at 88.8 miles per hour to the Copa Room at the Sands in 1960, to see the greatest show one could see for $5.95. Dinner included. Like many of you, I have a decidedly romantic view of “old Vegas.” A time where women were ladies and comps were truly comps. When men wore hats (thanks for nothing, JFK).  And when you could see a legend performing in the lounge. Often for free. I also have a decidedly romantic view of the mid-century crooners. Dean Martin, with a voice dark and syrupy like bourbon, and a total cheeseball when live on stage. Sammy Davis Jr., the most talented of them all, who could sing, dance, and act all his contemporaries under the table. And of course, the man himself: the Chairman of the Board, the one who made loneliness seem cool: Mr. Francis Albert Sinatra. When I want to relax for the evening, it's an old fashioned in my glass and the Rat Pack on my stereo. Despite peaking in Las Vegas 60 years prior, the Rat Pack is also inextricably intertwined with our Vegas trips today.  The men of The Summit provide the soundtrack to our early evenings. While we shower and dress for an evening on the town, pre-dinner cocktails in our hotel room glasses, Sammy, Frank, and Dino provide the soundtrack. No two days in Vegas are the same; but the Rat Pack is part of the ritual that binds them together for my wife and I. Indeed, the bellman has no sooner closed the door and my wife is asking me to turn on the Bluetooth speaker and put on music. Not just any music; our Vegas music.  The only music that will do. When planning a recent trip, I mentioned to my wife that there was a Rat Pack impressionist show a little off strip. “And why haven't we seen it yet?” Was her response.   “The Rat Pack is Back” is not a new show to Vegas.   With a history of more than 20 years, the show was previously at several venues in Vegas, including the Rio and the Plaza before finding its current home at the Tuscany, just east of the Strip on Flamingo in 2015.  In fact, if you've seen the movie Get Him to the Greek, you've seen a little of the Rat Pack is Back show at the Plaza.  Russell Brand's character musician stops by to see his dad, who is a drummer in the show. I'm not sure what I was expecting when I purchased our tickets to The Rat Pack is Back… Maybe 80 minutes or so of mediocre, karaoke-style covers of my favorite songs? What we experienced ended up being so much more, and it's a show that we will definitely be returning to see again. The Rat Pack is Back is performed in a small theater at the Tuscany in Las Vegas, in an intimate venue appropriately named “The Copa Room.” It features 3 impressionist performers, of which 2 are great and 1 is just okay.  (Our Dean Martin didn't really look or sound like Dean Martin. I'm looking into whether he was out for the night, or just plain out.) An especially enjoyable aspect of the show was the live, seven-piece band backing the trio.  I often caught myself watching the piano playing conductor as she guided the band through their various cues. True to their subjects, the band and impersonators often had moments of playful banter between them. The Copa Room at the Tuscany is unfortunately a shadow of its namesake at the Sands, but this didn't take away from our experience.  A relatively small-for-Vegas room, seating consists of movable “wedding venue” seats, with small cocktail tables between the front VIP tables. Lucky for us, the small size of the room contributes to a more intimate setting.  Seating is assigned by “area” and is first come, first serve. I paid for VIP seating, and we arrived early enough to be granted front row seats on stage right.  One gets the feeling you could slip the host a twenty for an upgrade, if you want to capture more of that old-school feeling. True to old Vegas form, there's a bar in the theater and drink service during the show.  I was a little disappointed that there is not dinner served during the show, like the Sands shows of old.  The Tuscany offers an optional dinner package with The Rat Pack is Back tickets, but the meal is served in another location on the property, not in the Copa Room itself.  We opted for Bugsy and Meyers down the street at the Flamingo instead. As I mentioned before, the quality of the impersonators was excellent. While Kyle Diamond doesn't quite have Sammy Davis Jr's squint, and Chris Jason is a little too much of an Italian goombah to be a dead ringer for Sinatra, the experience is close enough for me. The performers each have their own moments to shine, both solo and together on stage.  Songs are rarely performed all the way through, which serves to keep the show from stalling out. There's canned banter amongst the performers, and if you've ever heard recordings of the Rat Pack, most of their dialogue is accurate. This leads to an early and probably necessary disclosure that this is a show that takes place in the middle of the previous century, and therefore has the humor to match. The jokes aren't what I would call crude, but they certainly aren't politically correct.  Some may consider this a criticism, others a feature. Purists will note that not all of the song choices are accurate. Sammy Davis Jr. sings Mr. Bojangles, a song that wasn't written until 1965, and he didn't sing until 1972, and Sinatra sings the Theme from New York, New York, a song that was written in 1977 and recorded by Sinatra in ‘79. There's also a bit of early ‘60s eye candy, with a leotarded playboy bunny brought on stage to flirt and verbally parry with the men. I've been clear in other reviews that I appreciate the female form - especially in my Vegas shows - but her inclusion here felt almost gratuitous, as though the show's creators felt that the Rat Pack is Back couldn't stand on its own without some T and A.  I don't think the bunny took away from the show, but I also don't think she really added much to it either. As always, we make it a point to cover the Audience Fuckery Factor in these reviews for the sake of our listeners who want to see shows, but don't want to be the center of attention.  While we enjoyed our front seats, “Frank Sinatra” made a joke that I was banging on his door for 45 minutes the night before, until he finally let my wife out. We laughed, but you may not like light-hearted sexual assault jokes made about your spouse. There was another woman,  “Delores,” who was in the front, closer to center, and the performers made several jokes about her throughout the show. None were mean-spirited, and she seemed to enjoy the attention.  If you don't, I would recommend requesting a seat three or more rows back.  This reminds me of another aspect of the show I really enjoyed: all three impersonators made it a point to head into the audience at the end to take pictures with the crowd, including Delores.  These days, it seems like every Vegas performer wants you to pay for a special VIP package to take photos or speak with you, but the fact that these guys came out to take some photos and chat with us without hesitation was a fun bonus. All in all, I would definitely recommend the Rat Pack is Back, especially if you have a hunger for the Vegas of Old. I know that we will certainly make an effort to see it again. Showtimes are nightly at 7:30pm, but dark on Sundays. Tickets start at $90, but I recommend spending another $10 per person for the VIP seating, or you will be sitting along the perimeter of the room.

If there is something that is practiced by every culture I've ever encountered is boiling leaves, herbs and/or flowers to make comforting or delicious drinks. In my household my mother preferred teas over conventional medicine : anis estrella for the stomach, manzanilla for insomnia and bugambilia to scare the flu away were amongst the many other “creations'  that she came up with over the years to alleviate even the most stubborn of pains. But it was not until I tried tea in Taiwan that I found an amazing array of flavors connected to the different leaves, processes and ways to prepare it. Tea leaves, just like agave, are great  and ancient storytellers. Not only have humans consumed tea for thousands of years but some of the trees used to make puer   can be more than hundred years old. When I met  Mónica Favila, today's invitee, I was thrilled at the prospect of better understanding this medium and trying some of the delicious expressions that she collects.

They don't call it a “Monk Fast” for nothing. For the record, I'd never heard that term until 2023!How I perform the fast…First, the disclaimer once again: I AM NOT A DOCTOR. PLEASE VISIT YOUR DOCTOR AND DISCUSS ANY CHANGES TO YOUR DIET FIRST.For better or worse, I dove head-first into this experiment with almost no research.I had no idea there are terms like “dirty” fasting.To get through the day, I will probably have about 5-6 cups of hot tea and drink a lot of water, sometimes carbonated. I also have coffee in the morning. That coffee has a touch of coconut oil and sometimes I'll add a touch of butter.Apparently, this is known as “Fat-Fasting”. I didn't know that.Purists are likely to say that those are calories and it's a “dirty fast.”For me, this experiment is about health and I'm confident that those fats are healthy. Further, the reduction in calories from a typical day of 2,000+ to approximately 50 is fasting.Less than 100 calories (far less), during a thirty-six hours period is substantial.I will also take my usual dose of psyllium husk (approx a tablespoon) with some salmon oils, around noon.So there you have it, the quick and “dirty” What? Why? and How?The challenge was to complete every Monday (all five) in October; that happens today.At 55, I expect that I will continue to test, experiment and explore. Today is the feast of Saint Joseph Calasanz, a Spanish priest who died in 1648 and worked in Rome. He founded a religious organization known as the Purists to help children attend who were abandoned by their families.

Purists love to tell us that many songs with “blues” in their title — “Blues in the Night,” “Birth of the Blues,” “Lovesick Blues” — technically are not blues at all. (Shoot, even the great “St. Louis Blues,” while it certainly opens with a traditional 12-bar blues structure, wraps up with 16 bars in a habanera rhythm that its composer W.C. Handy called his “tango section.”)Of course, many of these cited songs aren't meant to be blues, but to be about having the blues, and 1950s classic rocker “Singing the Blues” certainly meets those specs.A perfect honky tonk tune of its time, “Singing the Blues” was written by 20-year-old Arkansas native Melvin Endsley in 1954. The following year, Endsley took his song to Nashville to pitch it backstage at the Grand Ole Opry. And it worked. In 1956, Marty Robbins recorded the song (which is credited, by the way, with putting Robbins on the musical map). It was pretty good for Endsley's career too. His writing talents were in high demand after Robbins's success. Over his 50-year career, Melvin wrote some 400 songs that were recorded by hundreds of artists.Living the BluesMelvin Endsley himself had more than a passing acquaintance with the blues. In 1937, when he was three years old, he contracted polio, requiring him to use a wheelchair for the rest of his life.Then, starting at the age of 11, he spent three years in the Crippled Children's Hospital in Memphis. However, the resourceful youngster parlayed that into a life-altering experience. While in the hospital, Melvin regularly listened to music on the radio, and he taught himself to play the guitar.After returning to Arkansas, the teenaged Endsley began performing on local radio shows. By the time he was 20, he had an original song — "It Happens Every Time" — that caught the attention of a couple of established artists, Don Gibson and Dorsey Burnette, who encouraged him to continue his songwriting. Within months, Melvin had created the song that would change his life. While “Singing the Blues” was first recorded by Marty Robbins, its best-known recording was released in October 1956 by Guy Mitchell, whose rendering of it spent 10 weeks at No. 1 on the U.S. Billboard chart from December 1956 to February 1957.Two other charting versions of the song — Robbins' original along with one by English singer Tommy Steel — also were released almost simultaneously with Mitchell's.Since then, “Singing the Blues” often has been revived. In the 1960s, for instance, Bill Haley & His Comets, Hank Snow and Dean Martin all made recordings of it. In the 1970s came versions by Black Oak Arkansas and by Marie Osmond. In the 1980s, it was Gene Summers and Randy Travis, while the ‘90s saw takes by The Kentucky Headhunters and by Paul McCartney.The English Football ConnectionWeirdly, the tune also has resonated with English football fans. It has been sung since the ‘60s by fans of various clubs, usually offering parodies of the opening lyrics. For example, Everton fans sing, "I've never felt more like singing the blues, when Everton win and Liverpool lose. Oh Ev-er-ton, you've got me singing the blues." Our Take on the TunePamela Bowen, who has been our band manager for more than 20 years, is a major influence on all things Flood, from the venues we visit to the tunes we play when we get there. So when Pamela recently suggested we augment the roots music portion of our repertoire with some more classic old-time rock, we started casting our thoughts back to the tunes that stirred our youth, like this from the Fifties.Our first public performance of the song was last week at Sal's Speakeasy, where, as we reported here earlier, it even made Pamela's video from the night. Will baseball purists embrace the new rules in place this year?

In this episode of RAMP the Profs take a close look and listen to the 90s and 2000s era of Metallica.  The music Metallica produced after 1991 was polarizing, both enraging some early fans, but also introducing legions of younger fans to the band and their new sound.  Purists claimed that Metallica had abandoned their thrash roots, sold out, and a few viewed the band's change in direction as a betrayal!  Angry metal "Luddites" proclaimed they would never support the band again after the more commercial sound of their self-titled Black album in 91.  Ironically, it was that same album that catapulted Metallica into the stratosphere as the biggest and most successful metal band in history.  Court and Matt offer a different and more even-handed take on Metallica's later catalog, giving credit where due, and acknowledging that there were a few clunkers along the way as the band struggled to find it's identity.   Court and I also want to thank all of our listeners, and in particular our long-time listeners for the years of support and interaction on the RAMP FB page.   Rock on mates!

I'm not gonna lie, I'm not a huge fan of pop music. That said, I must admit I'm not totally immune to the genre. I've been spotted dancing to Taylor Swift occasionally. Over the summer, I might (according to unreliable witnesses) have sang Britney's Baby One More Time at the karaoke. In my world, pop is okay with when booze is involved (with moderation, of course). Okay, I won't usually blast N'Sync or One Direction in my car or listen to that kind of stuff alone; that's the line I won't cross, trust me. Yet, this week, we delve into Pop territory. I know, I'm always ranting about Rock n' roll but trust me on this one, because we're not far away from that world. And it's actually way more punk that you might think. You see, Kit Major, the artist I got this week on Hanging On Sunset, piqued my curiosity when she said she mixes Sonic Youth and Britney Spears. To some ears, that's demonic, that's even a blasphemy against the rock culture. But in a way, it's also very liberating to sabotage the sometimes snobbish mindset of the so-called 'true' music lovers. Kit Major literally explodes the norms of music by blending things that didn't blend before. Anyway, that's how music always evolve. There wouldn't be no Elvis if it wasn't for the blending of Gospel, Rhythm N' Blues and Country. Purists will cringe. But as soon as the concept of purity is involved, I'm out! Who wants to be that guy? Not me! So, I invited Kit to the show and I have to say, her love for Britney is equal to that of Green Day, Lady Gaga, and David Bowie. As most people in the new generation, she doesn't care and doesn't apologize for mixing those things. That's pretty punk, in my opinion. That's right, Boomer! Kit's just released God Complex, and she also gratified us with a live acoustic version of Rot Ur Mind, since, yes, we're launching HOS TV! Kit honoured us by debuting this new video format. Today, I am doing a special session. It’s a review of a book called Bitcoin Billionaires by Ben Mezrich. Accessibility: ALearning: AEnjoyment: A OverviewBitcoin Billionaires is one of those books you could see being made into a movie. It’s not that far fetched given that the author, Ben Mezrich, also wrote the award winning “Social Network”, the movie about Facebook. In some ways, it feels like Bitcoin Billionaires continues that story except the focus is now shifted to the Winklevoss Twins. Tyler and Cameron Winklevoss became famous as the tall, Harvard-educated, Olympic rowers who alleged that Mark Zuckerburg ripped them off while founding Facebook. The author weaves the bold story of how the twins became among the first bitcoin billionaires along with a colorful dose of bitcoin history. The Winklevoss twins founded Gemini, one of the largest US based crypto-exchanges and Nifty Gateway, a leading NFT marketplace. The book lays bare the tension between ideologues like Ronald Ver and businessmen like Tyler and Cameron. Additionally, key developments like the Mt Gox hack and the Cyprus banking crisis also feature in the story. Mezrich does a great job making bitcoin history fun to learn. Key storiesStoring bitcoin in banks: The twins have taken extreme measures to safeguard the private keys to their mountain of bitcoin. The private keys - a long alphanumeric code - are split up and stored in bank safety deposit boxes across the country. Funny how banks are keeping crypto safe probably without them even knowing it. 2013 Cyprus banking crisis: What would you do if you woke one morning and 10+% of your life savings were gone? This was the reality for bank account holders in Cyprus in 2013. The banks were too big to fail but the government didn’t have the funds to bail them out. As a last resort, the government dipped into all bank accounts while everyone slept. This set off a bitcoin price rally as consumers lost confidence in fiat currency. Flashforward to 2021, the US has printed unprecedented trillions of dollars related to COVID. There are rising concerns about the US government spending and the dollar’s value. Part of the current bitcoin bull run is motivated by investors seeking shelter for the funds.Silk Road takedown: Ross Ulbricht founded Silk Road to enable anonymous transactions. It quickly became synonymous with drug smuggling, human trafficking and money laundering. Silk Road used bitcoin as its primary currency until it was shut down in 2013. However, the damage was already done. Bitcoin had become associated with criminals and the dark web, a shadow it’s still struggling to shake today. Silicon valley vs crypto: Early bitcoin enthusiasts were outsiders in Silicon Valley. The Winklevoss twins were occasionally shunned by folks wary of not upsetting Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook. This outsider mentality is helpful as an innovator and an entrepreneur. Along the way, bitcoin became less fringe and much of Silicon Valley has embraced cryptocurrency to some degree. Google has gone from banning crypto ads to adding cryptocurrency prices in Google Finance. Bitcoin ETF: The Winklevoss twins began the quest to launch the first US-based bitcoin ETF in 2013. 8 years later, there are now 2 Canada-based bitcoin ETFs but none in the US. Major firms like Fidelity have now also proposed ETFs. I think the SEC will eventually approve a US-based bitcoin ETF. This struggle highlights some of the difficulties associated with innovation and introducing a new asset class. Purists vs Pragmatism: There is some tension within the bitcoin community between purists and pragmatists. Some bitcoin purists are wary of the existing banking sector and governments. They would prefer to operate in a peer-to-peer, permissionless, tamper free environment without government oversight. On the other hand, pragmatists prefer to operate within the existing banking sector and seek government regulation to foster growth.Charlie Shrem: was the brains behind BitInstant. In 2012, BitInstant was the leading vehicle by which early adopters purchased bitcoin via a network of over 700,000 store locations.The author suggests that 23-year old Charlie was caught up in the tension between purists vs pragmatism. He was ambivalent about enforcing KYC (Know-Your-Customer) requirements and alerting authorities to suspicious transactions.  Ultimately, Charlie was arrested and imprisoned for money laundering. He was released in 2016. His fall from grace highlights the importance of coloring within the confines of the law and delegating (he served as CEO and Compliance Officer). The optimist in me is rooting for a comeback story for Charlie. Let’s see. ConclusionI really enjoyed Bitcoin Billionaires. I probably wharfed it down in a couple long reading sessions. The book is accessible and engaging. I highly recommend it for folks who are new to crypto and want to learn about the history and key characters. Debating WordPress Page Builders is like your crazy uncle talking politics at the holiday dinner with the family. But let's do it anyway? Full disclosure, I sell a plugin called Conductor, that often gets confused as a page builder. There's a lot of noise in this space, and lots of strong opinions. For good reason. A page builder changes the way someone experiences WordPress – for better or worse. It's how, when you're using it across your website, you create your content, generate sales pages, or sell products. It removes the need to learn coding, placing that power into the hands of someone who can navigate a drag-and-drop interface. Hopefully. And that's the problem. Purists are outraged that a site owner would choose to overlay all of this technical debt to WordPress, when whipping out SublimeText and crafting a template.php from scratch is so much more “right.” FFS do it the right way Which is the secondary argument to all of this, are page builders “doing it the right way?” WordPress isn't easy, and builder plugins can help ease some of that pain. But the right way, would be to to code it from scratch, or at least that's what some will lead you to believe. Less code is used when you create it from scratch, naturally. Builders add more complexity to a theme, as to say, a theme dictates how pages are created — then you inject a builder's layout logic. Your competing against the WordPress experience. WordPress is moving to page building, you heard it here first. Purists also feel burned (heck, frightened) about builder plugins. Here's a story about how I saved $300 by NOT calling a professional I own a home with a steam furnace. I don't fully know how it all works, but I do know it fills with water, the water is set to boil, creating steam that is pushed to radiators throughout the house. Winter is coming; it's getting cold. The first night we turned the heat on, the furnace didn't “boot up.” Did I call an HVAC professional, on a Sunday? Last time I did that, it cost $300, so I took to YouTube. I researched all the possible issues with my furnace: The thermocouple might be bad. The water basin is too full, or not full enough. The vent to the chimney isn't open.   I found out that the venting system was stuck, and replaced the part — myself. A small business HVAC person never received my call. I saved over $300. Software is getting easier, education is everywhere — now what? Page builders usher in a new kind of DIY'er to WordPress. Clients no longer need to call us for emergency coding work before a big sale weekend, and inexperienced consultants can portray themselves as having more coding experience than they actually do. Heck, maybe I could do house-calls now to fix furnances that don't startup — for a limited-time only $97. It's seen as a threat to our revenue, our livliehood. So what do we do about it? Embrace the change, and find new ways to enhance your value. I'm not saying this is happening at a rapid pace, and that page buidlers are to blame — ALL of the plugins and services being created in our industry are getting easier, empowering a larger group of users.
