The Flagship: Late game struggles plague Texas in loss to Oklahoma State

The Longhorns had the chance to bounce back from last weekend's second-half collapse to Oklahoma when Texas hosted No. 12 ranked Oklahoma State Saturday. The Longhorns led for the majority of Saturday's game against the Cowboys, only to once again collapse in the second half, leading to a 32-24 loss to Oklahoma State. On this week's game reaction edition of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes break down the Longhorns' second conference loss of the season, this time to the Cowboys, which was a bit reminiscent of last weekend's late game loss to Oklahoma. The Flagship weighs in on the offensive issues that plagued the team in the second half, which once again was a product of poor offensive line play, penalties and the offense taking their foot off the gas as the game wore on, especially after going up by double digits on the Cowboys early in the third quarter. Chip and Taylor also discuss what Steve Sarkisian had to say about the Longhorns' psyche when games start going in their opponents favor and how the bye week will be a chance for the coaches to try to correct the mental fragility of this Texas team. Catch all of that and much more on this week's loaded Texas-Oklahoma State game reaction edition of The Flagship Podcast. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

The Longhorns will need to have a short memory to put last weekend's heart-breaking loss to Oklahoma in the past and get ready for another Top 25 battle this Saturday when No. 12 ranked Oklahoma State heads to Austin for an 11 a.m. kickoff against No. 25 ranked Texas. But the Longhorns will be without two key starters on both sides of the ball when they host the Cowboys this weekend. The Flagship Podcast gets the Texas-Oklahoma State game week started off with a loaded show as Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes discuss all head coach Steve Sarkisian had to say Monday after he watched the film of the Longhorns' loss to the Sooners in the Red River Shootout. The Flagship weighs in on Sarkisian's concerns coming out of the Oklahoma game, including the lack of pass-rush shown in the second half against Oklahoma and the Longhorns' inability to get pressure on true freshman QB Caleb Williams, and also how Texas will replace two key players on offense and defense after he announced wide receiver Jordan Whittington (clavicle) and edge-rusher Jacoby Jones (foot) will undergo surgery after both went down with injuries against the Sooners. The co-hosts discuss the guys who are next in line to replace the injured Longhorns, and why sophomore edge rusher Alfred Collins has a chance to solidify a starting role on the defense after back-to-back games where he made big plays coming off of the bench. After a quick break, The Flagship returns with our Love it or Leave it segment, with this weeks topics focused on how alarming the defense's last three games have been, the level of concern for the Texas offense in replacing Whittington and what to make of Oklahoma State's 5-1 record against Texas in the last six games in Austin. In the field of bio-tech, it can take 10 years and millions of dollars to see if an experimental idea might turn into a life-saving treatment—if it ever does. Noubar Afeyan fully understood those risks when he co-founded Moderna in 2010. He and his colleagues were looking for a way to deploy the messenger RNA molecule to tackle life-threatening diseases. In January of 2020, an urgent opportunity presented itself in the form of a deadly virus that was spreading across the globe. At a breathtaking pace, Moderna produced a prototype for a COVID-19 vaccine, partnered with the NIH to test it, and produced millions of doses, becoming part of the most rapid vaccine roll-out in human history. While Moderna is the best known of Noubar's companies, he has launched many others in the bio-tech space as part of Flagship Pioneering, his multi-billion dollar venture studio.

It was the tale of two halves for Texas football Saturday inside the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns got off to a roaring start against the Sooners and enforced their will throughout the first half of the Red River Shootout. But the first-half dream turned into a second-half nightmare when Oklahoma erased an 18-point deficit coming out of halftime and handed the Longhorns their second loss of the season, 55-48. The Flagship Podcast returns with a recap of Saturday's thriller between Texas and Oklahoma. Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes break down the Longhorns' performance against the Sooners and weigh in on everything from the play by Casey Thompson, to the impressive career performance of wide receiver Xavier Worthy and the key moments that led to the second-half collapse in the Cotton Bowl. Chip and Taylor take a look at the defense's performance and explain why fans need to tap the breaks on calling for jobs considering the amount of plays (81) and time (35:23) the defense was on the field against the Sooners compared to that of the Texas offense, which only managed 61 plays on 24:37 time of possession and converted just one third down in the second half of the game against Oklahoma. The Flagship wraps up the show with an early look at what's to come for the Longhorns as they enter the second half of the 2021 slate beginning Saturday when Texas returns to Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium to host Oklahoma State at 11 a.m. CT on FOX. It's Red River Shootout week on The Flagship Podcast! The Longhorns and Sooners are set for the annual battle in the Cotton Bowl as No. 21 ranked Texas and No. 6 ranked Oklahoma prepare for the 117th meeting between the two rivalry programs. On the early week edition of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes take an early look ahead to Saturday's Texas-OU game. The Flagship recaps all first-year head coach Steve Sarkisian had to say during his Monday press conference with the Longhorns coming off of a much-needed road win at TCU last weekend. The co-hosts deliver the latest injury update on the Longhorns, including some bad news for the offense after Sarkisian announced senior offensive lineman Denzel Okafor will soon undergo season-ending surgery after he went down in last Saturday's game against the Horned Frogs. The Flagship discuss what Okafor's absence will mean for the Texas offensive line, which will need to play its best game of the year against a solid Sooners' defense that currently ranks No. 7 in the country against the run. Chip and Taylor also discuss the production of sophomore running back Bijan Robinson coming off of his outstanding performance against the Horned Frogs that saw him rush for 216 yards and two touchdowns in the 32-27 win over TCU, and how crucial it is for the Longhorns' receivers to step up their game and help take some of the workload off of Robinson this weekend when they take on the Sooners. After a quick break, The Flagship returns with our 'Love it or leave it' segment, with this week's topics touching on the level of concern for Texas after showing some struggles on both sides of the ball against TCU, how important it is for Texas to not expect Robinson to continue to carry the load for the Longhorns' offense and what to make of the Sooners close games and early offensive struggles this season. In this week's preview edition of The Flagship Podcast ahead of Texas' attempt to claim the Longhorns' first win over TCU in Fort Worth since 2013 (when a lightning storm caused a three-hour delay in the middle of the game), we talk to Brian Estridge, the voice of TCU football and longtime morning show host on WBAP in Dallas-Fort Worth. We get right to it and ask Estridge what the (bleep) happened to the TCU defense in giving up 595 yards, including 350 yards rushing, in a 42-34 loss at home last Saturday against crosstown rival SMU in the Battle For The Iron Skillet. In addition to four members of the SMU staff having worked at TCU previously under Gary Patterson, including SMU head coach Sonny Dykes (as an analyst), the Horned Frogs were missing some key defensive starters who should be back this week to face Texas, Estridge said. Estridge weighs in on if Patterson might be simplifying some things this week to help some of the inexperienced members of TCU's secondary. So how has TCU gone 2-8 in games before facing Texas the past 10 years and 3-6 in games after facing the Longhorns yet has gone 7-2 against UT the last nine years? Estridge shares his can't-miss theory on the matter. Gone is offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie (now at Texas Tech). So the TCU offense is being run by prodigal Horned Frogs' play caller Doug Meacham (who served as co-coordinator with Cumbie previously) with influence from analyst and former Minnesota head coach Jerry Kill, Estridge said. Estridge breaks down the play of a TCU offense loaded at the skill positions. Horned Frogs' RB Zach Evans is averaging a Big 12-best 110.0 yards per game rushing and 7.9 yards per carry; and WR Taye Barber is averaging 23.0 yards per catch; while quarterback Max Duggan, who is 2-0 against Texas, has seven TD passes with two interceptions and is the team's second-leading rusher (behind Evans). Saturday marks Texas' first Big 12 road game of 2021, and Estridge talks about what kind of a reception the SEC-bound Longhorns and former TCU athletic director Chris Del Conte might receive. Estridge wraps things up with how he thinks Saturday's game will play out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Hunter comes in heated as the bank thought him spending $50 was something that didn't match someone as pathetic as him, and he's also getting fat, and he also lost a heart breaker in fantasy football, and he also had a pop quiz he wasn't ready for, but at least he's in love. Him and Riley are taking on sober October and find the real turning point of Riley becoming not skinny anymore. Also Will reminds us of how Riley passed out in a bush in high school trying to be active. We discuss the new taco bell sandwich taco, and will weighs in on what he thinks a vegan is. Also we bring up little people for some reason and Riley's run in with hilarious little kids in New York. Texas football got off to a solid start to Big 12 play in the Longhorns' 70-35 win over Texas Tech. The stout performance will need to continue in the coming weeks as Texas prepares for a gauntlet stretch of the 2021 schedule, which starts this weekend against TCU. The Flagship Podcast starts off the week with a loaded show as Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes weigh in on the Longhorns' dominant win over the Red Raiders and look ahead to what Texas will face this weekend at TCU. The Flagship talks about the Horned Frogs' upset loss to SMU, particularly the questionable at best performance by the TCU defense, which allowed 350 yards rushing to the Mustangs. Chip and Taylor discuss how Texas will likely see a far improved TCU team this week considering the Horned Frogs' success in preparing for Texas since joining the Big 12 and weigh in on ways the Longhorns can further expose this TCU defense with the continued production shown by Casey Thompson and the plethora of dominant running backs Texas has at its disposal, starting with Bijan Robinson. The Flagship also weighs in on the Texas defense's performance to start Big 12 play and discuss some key areas of focus for the unit as the Longhorns make their way through conference play. After a quick break, The Flagship returns with our 'Love it or leave it' segment, with this week's topics touching on the surprising performance by both the Texas offense and the TCU defense last week, how prepared this Horned Frogs' team will be when they take on the Longhorns Saturday and give some way-too-early odds for Texas' chances at being in a Big 12 title game after some of the top teams in the conference struggling early in the season. Last year, Texas was a 17-point favorite at Texas Tech in both teams' Big 12 opener, and the Longhorns needed minor miracles to overcome a 15-point deficit in the last 3:13 to escape Lubbock with a 63-56 overtime victory. Joining us this week on The Flagship Podcast to preview the 2021 Big 12 opener between the Longhorns and Red Raiders is Jarret Johnson, publisher of InsideTheRedRaiders.com, who said Tech coach Matt Wells "mentions that game against Texas last year a lot" to his team. Gone is Tech quarterback Alan Bowman - replaced by 6-foot-5, 230-pound Oregon transfer Tyler Shough. Johnson explains why Shough is off to an up-and-down start for the Red Raiders. Tech running back SaRodorick Thompson, who ripped off a 75-yard touchdown run against Texas last season, is returning from injury. But Johnson tells you why Tech hasn't missed Thompson thanks to freshman running back Tahj Brooks, who is averaging 8.1 yards per carry. Johnson talks about how Tech's 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore receiver Erik Ezukanma, who had seven catches for 91 yards and a touchdown against Texas last season, has only gotten better. Tech is 3-0 after victories against Houston, Stephen F. Austin and Florida International and trailed early in all three games. The Red Raiders needed a fourth-and-goal pass breakup on the last play of he game against FCS opponent SFA to hold on to a 28-22 victory. Johnson says because of the competition, it's hard to tell just how strong Tech's 3-0 start really is. Johnson also says Tech's offensive line has been inconsistent and really struggled against SFA. Johnson talks about the Tech defense, which he says has a strong front seven and has been stout against the run but might be vulnerable in the secondary. Johnson tells you how Tech coach Matt Wells, who found linebacker Colin Schooler (brother of Texas safety Brenden Schooler) in the transfer portal last year, went to the transfer portal again in 2021 and found gold (in addition to QB Shough).  Johnson also talks about Wells' job security after going 4-8 and 4-6 in his first two seasons in Lubbock. How do Tech fans view Texas now that the Longhorns have said they're leaving the Big 12 for the Southeastern Conference? Johnson tells you and gives you his prediction for how Saturday's game at 11 am CT (on ABC) at Royal-Memorial Stadium plays out. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Texas wrapped up the non-conference slate on a positive note when the Longhorns manhandled Rice, 58-0, last weekend. With the first three games in the rear-view mirror, Texas will not shift its focus to the Big 12 schedule, which could be a tough road for the Longhorns starting this weekend when Texas Tech heads to Austin for an 11 a.m. kickoff. On the early week edition of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes dive in to the first Big 12 game of the year for Steve Sarkisian and his staff against the Red Raiders. The Flagship discusses some of the key comments from Sarkisian to start the week as his team looks to continue on the winning path when they host Texas Tech this weekend. The Flagship weighs in on the first-year head coach announcing QB Casey Thompson will once again start for Texas Saturday, while the playing time for Hudson Card is up in the air and is not a guarantee.  With Thompson and the offense coming off of the monster performance against the Owls, Chip and Taylor give their take on what to expect from that side of the ball down the stretch of conference action. The Flagship also delivers an early preview of the Red Raiders, particularly on offense with Texas Tech fielding a more balanced group that has the talent to gash opponents on the ground and in the passing game. The Texas defense will be tasked with a difficult challenge in facing Texas Tech QB Tyler Shough — who averaged 270.67 passing yards per game for the Red Raiders in non-conference — and why Saturday's game will be the first true test for the Texas secondary in going up against the Tech offense. After a short break, The Flagship returns with our 'Love it or Leave it' segment, with this week's topics touching on what, if anything, we learned about Texas from the Rice game, level of concern for Joshua Moore's limited production through the last two games and how close Saturday's game between Texas and Texas Tech could be based off how the two teams have played one another in the past. The Longhorns rebounded in a big way Saturday night in Austin when Texas dominated Rice 58-0. After a humbling Week 2 loss to Arkansas, the Longhorns made a statement at all three phases of the game in the final non-conference regular-season matchup of Year 1 of the Steve Sarkisian era. On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes react to the Longhorns' performance against the Owls starting with the production of the Texas offense. Junior quarterback Casey Thompson logged his first career start at Texas and made his first college start one to remember as Thompson led the Texas offense on seven of eight scoring drives, all of which ended with touchdowns, before he hung it up midway through the third quarter. The Flagship also weighs in on the electric performance from the Texas running back room against the Rice defense, which has been a recent strength for the Owls under Mike Bloomgren, and rushed for a total 427 yards and six touchdowns in the ball game. Four different RBs found the end zone against Rice, led by sophomore RB Bijan Robinson with 127 yards and three touchdowns, while Roschon Johnson, Keilan Robinson and Jonathon Brooks all added a touchdown of their own. The Flagship then shifts focus to the defensive side of the ball in the shutout of Rice, which marked the first shutout win for Texas since 2017. The Longhorns enforced their will early and often against the Owls, and held the Rice offense to less than 300 total yards and no points. A big change has been made on the Forty Acres. Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian announced Monday that junior quarterback Casey Thompson will get his first-ever career start this Saturday when the Longhorns host Rice at Darrell K Royal - Texas Memorial Stadium. What does this decision mean for freshman QB Hudson Card and the offense? On this week's episode of The Flagship Podcast, Horns247 columnist Chip Brown and managing editor Taylor Estes weigh in on Sarkisian's decision to replace Card for Thompson as the Longhorns' starting QB ahead of Saturday's game, and how the quarterback change could impact the offense down the stretch. Chip and Taylor express their thoughts on Thompson getting his first start at Texas and why this was probably the right move for the Longhorns after last weekend's humbling upset loss to Arkansas. The Flagship also discuss the glaring issues on the offensive line that need to be cleaned up sooner rather than later, and how the O-line's struggles will only continue to plague the offense in Big 12 play if those problems do not get resolved. After a quick break, The Flagship returns with our Love it or Leave it segment, with this week's topics focused on how surprised you were at Sarkisian's QB change, if the starting job is Thompson's for the future and the level of concern for the Texas offensive line after showing struggles in the first two games of the season.
