Episode #426 of BGMania: A Video Game Music Podcast. Today on the show, Bryan and Bedroth shine a spotlight on the career of Nobuko Toda, a composer whose work has quietly shaped some of gaming's biggest franchises while rarely receiving the recognition afforded to many of her contemporaries. After studying at Berklee College of Music and joining Konami in the early 2000s, Toda became an integral part of the company's music team, contributing to everything from Metal Gear and Pro Evolution Soccer to lesser-known projects that showcased her incredible versatility. Throughout the episode, we explore the many sides of Toda's career, from her early Konami years through her later work. Along the way, we celebrate a composer whose music can be intimate, unsettling, heroic, reflective, and exhilarating, often within the span of a single soundtrack. From iconic franchises to hidden gems, this Composer Appreciation episode is dedicated to an artist whose contributions to video game music deserve far more attention than they've traditionally received. Email the show at bgmaniapodcast@gmail.com with requests for upcoming episodes, questions, feedback, comments, concerns, or any other thoughts you'd like to share! Special thanks to our Executive Producers: Jexak, Xancu, Jeff & Mike. In this episode of Retro Titans, Phil sits down with coder, musician and game porter Ian "Hoffman" Ford — a veteran of the Amiga demoscene whose work has helped bring classic games to new audiences across modern retro platforms. From creating tracker music as a teenager during the UK home computer boom to porting iconic titles like Metal Gear, Shinobi, Golden Axe and Turrican, Ian has spent decades combining technical expertise with a passion for retro gaming. Equally at home composing soundtracks, designing sound effects and writing low-level code, he occupies a unique place in the modern retro scene. Together, Phil and Ian explore the worlds of game porting and retro game music, discussing what it takes to faithfully bring classic games to new hardware, how vintage systems shape the creative process, and why preserving the look, feel and sound of these games remains so important today. In this episode, we explore: 1️⃣ The art of porting classic games What really happens when a game moves from one platform to another — and why understanding both the original hardware and the destination system is only the beginning. 2️⃣ From the Amiga demoscene to modern retro development How a teenage passion for music, coding and creativity evolved into a career spanning decades of retro gaming projects. 3️⃣ Music, sound and atmosphere in retro games From tracker music and game soundtracks to sound design and audio production, Ian explains how he creates music that enhances the retro gaming experience. 4️⃣ Head Over Heels: Return to Blacktooth A behind-the-scenes look at one of the most anticipated modern retro releases, and the work involved in bringing the Atari ST project to the Amiga. 5️⃣ Preserving gaming history for new generations From Metal Gear on the MSX to modern Neo Geo projects, Ian discusses why classic games still matter and how they continue to inspire today's developers and players. Ian also shares stories from the Amiga demo scene, explains how a chance discovery of the Metal Gear source code sparked his first major porting project, discusses his work on Seekanoid and Roguecraft DX, and reveals the games that shaped his life — from Tetris and Journey to the Neo Geo classic Neo Turf Masters.
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory. We cover lots of topics, delving into stealth and AI systems, objectives and their communication, and other thoughts. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Another mission Issues covered: whether it was designed for a controller, graphic fidelity holding up, the fixed function shading pipeline, the crossover between audio and visual meters, what's going on with the light meter, ambient noise affecting how quickly you can move, adjusting eyesight, layering mechanics into a mini-game, sprinklers everywhere, hose extraction, trip lasers, using a body as a laser avoider, a key that isn't a key, interrogation mechanics, consequences for not interrogating, multiple paths to information, forgetting the vision modes, the marketing targets for particular consoles, dynamic mission objectives, motivating spaces through pattern language, having to mark up the world to tell you what's important, a digression into climbing anywhere, "what map?," not wasting space, clockwork levels, a globetrotting set of ops vs single-location games, Brett has a good point, contrasting flavors, just jumping in and having the briefings paper over travel, the attract mode, benefitting pacing. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: XBOX, Pulp Fiction (obliquely), PlayStation 3, Clint Hocking, NOLF 2, Max Payne, Metal Gear (series), Three Men and a Baby, Poltergeist, Eternal Darkness, Mission: Impossible (series), Entrapment, Sean Connery, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Dishonored, Prey, Hitman, Die Hard, Assassin's Creed, Crazy Climber, Cairn, Jusant, Hideo Kojima, Reacher (series), The Gray Man (series), The Hunt for Red October, Quiller (series), Shadowlord-72, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Next time: More TCSCCT! Errata: Apparently there were in fact multiple shader units on the original Xbox, and supported Pixel/Vertex 1.1 shaders. We regret the error. (Fixed function was still a thing, though, I'm just not remembering the details correctly.) Twitch: timlongojr and twinsunscorp YouTube Discord DevGameClub@gmail.com

All good things must come to an end, and so too must Policenauts, an absolutely banger from the halcyon days of early Kojima. Time for Jonathan and Ed to put an end to the corruption on Beyond and get our girl Karen the bone marrow she needs. Then stick around as we throw our favorite Kojima characters into the worlds of mini-golf and Resident Evil, and once and for all put an answer to the question everyone's been asking: who is the Leon Kennedy of the Metal Gear world?Episode 83: The Come Corner

See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

War Machine Join us for your government mandated propaganda film featuring giant robots and US Ranger training procedures aplenty. It’s War Machine on Netflix, not to be confused with War Machine (2017) on Netflix… (or War Machine, not on Netflix) in THIS ONE… During the final stage of US Army Ranger selection, an elite team‘s training exercise turns into a fight for survival against an unimaginable threat. It’s propaganda, make no mistake about that folks. it’s flag waving jingoistic, “Hoo-Rah America saves the world” propaganda, but with its blend of Predator and Metal Gear, and a hint of Aliens…is it actually any good? Dion is our drill sergeant, Jill and Peta are the New recruits and Quinny is walking down washout lane… Synopsis Alan Ritchson is a soldier in a elite Ranger unit whose training exercise becomes a fight for survival when they encounter a deadly, giant alien robot. https://youtu.be/VVw5p_TFXgY A huge thank you to all grunts and jarheads who illegally tune in to this frequency to listen to each episode of the show while they prepare their next deployment into the theatre of war… or something. Sony ran an all-timer of a State of Play last week, so we spend a bunch of time digging into a bunch of news and demos about God of War Trilogy Remake, Control Resonant, and Konami's impressive bundle of Castlevania, Silent Hill, and Metal Gear games. Also, games like God of War: Sons of Sparta, Menace, Heart of the Forest, and Avowed on PS5. Also, Vinny's questionable encounter at the Outback Steakhouse. BAM! Nieuwe week, nieuwe PUPcast!
