This week we are landing with a splat on the ground floor of a quarantined apartment complex in Spain for what may be the only (somewhat) heroic depiction of a landlord in film history! It's the very intense 2007 virus outbreak thriller from Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza, which spawned several sequels as well as the American remake QUARANTINE.Discussed on this episode: ethical video journalism, RESIDENT EVIL games, Catholicism, cinematographers with acting roles, and, of course, whether these infected qualify as zombies or not.Join the conversation on our Discord at https://discord.com/invite/RssDc3brsx and get more Eye of the Duck on our Patreon show, After Hours https://www.patreon.com/EyeoftheDuckPodReferences:Special FeaturesThe Making of RECCrew InterviewsFilm Talk Paco Plaza InterviewIGN Plaza and Balagueró InterviewDrink and Be Merry at the Smodcastle Film Festival 08/08/25: https://www.smodcastlecinemas.com/movie/Smodcastle_Film_Festival_2025__Block_07Credits:Eye of the Duck is created, hosted, and produced by Dom Nero and Adam Volerich. This episode was edited by Michael Gaspari. This episode was researched by Parth Marathe. Our logo was designed by Francesca Volerich. Update of the Week: Andy talks about The Coldplay Concert incident bringing an affair to light from a CEO of a major corporation Andy discusses Goldberg's retirement match on Saturday Night Main Event and how it didn't quite live up to expectations and was not the best way to go out, considering his fairly long career in the sport. Daniel talks about watching Superman at the theatres and enjoying it. It had the classic James Gunn feel and felt similar to Guardians of the Galaxy. Daniel provides his review of the documentary Poop Cruise, about the Carnival Cruise issues from years ago where passengers were stranded for an extended period of time without power, little food, and massive sewage issues. Noel gives his take on Diablo 4 and about how it ended up being a disappointment with its gameplay and lack of replayability in comparison to Diablo 2. The only saving grace is the progression of the story within the Diablo Universe. Noel speaks about beating and thoroughly enjoying Resident Evil 4, to which Daniel agrees. They go into detail on the various positive qualities of the game including graphics, updated gameplay, and tweaks to the story. Hello one and all, and welcome back to another exciting episode of Surviving the Horror! On this month's episode Colin and Josh are back to examine a perhaps misunderstood and underrated horror game of the Xbox 360 era. In 2008, Konami and Double Helix published Silent Hill: Homecoming. This game, positioned as the fifth main line Silent Hill title, was the first in the franchise to be developed entirely by a Western studio. With a troubled development cycle, various conflicting inputs from Konami producers, and a change in the horror landscape at the time with games like Resident Evil 4, would Silent Hill: Homecoming have what it takes to rise to the occasion and satisfy fans? The answer at the time was a resounding no, with the game garnering mixed critical and user reception. However, in light of what we know today, and the history of its development, perhaps folks were too hard on Homecoming. Homecoming tells the story of Alex Shepherd, a solider returning to his home town of Shepherd's Glen after being wounded in battle. Alex arrives to find the town is in disarray, and most notably his brother and many other children in the town are missing. As Alex delves deeper into the long held traditions and secrets of Shepherd's Glen he too delves deeper into his own psyche and fragmented self. The end result is a horrific journey through hellish landscapes, and the dark recesses of the mind. Is it the best Silent Hill game out there? Undoubtedly no; but is it as bad as people on the internet would have you believe? Absolutely not. We hope you enjoy this lengthy episode on what is considered the "black sheep" of the Silent Hill franchise. Thank you for listening!

We have really enjoyed what we have seen from Zach Creggers. Barbarian was fantastic and Weapons looks like it is going to be great. But what could he do with a video game movie? Especially one with as passionate of a fan base as Resident Evil. Well, as long as he sticks the lore he should be alright.Another long running horror property is the Amityville series. It lost the plot a long time ago - there have been comedies, stories about government conspiracies, and even a dildo movie. But it is still chugging along. The news that Johnathan and Vanessa Winters are taking a stab at an original Amityville is the most exciting thing to happen to the franchise in decades. But is it more exciting than the announcement surrounding the next Robert Eggers movie?Film fests give up a chance to cover short films. On this show, we talk about Shrimp Fried Rice, the story of a renowned chef who is about to face his biggest nemesis. It is an outrageous tale that is a reminder of everything we love about genre movies. It is laugh out loud funny and a nice change of pace.Baba Yaga from 1973 is much more serious. Arguably, it is too serious. But, it is also self-aware which makes it much more palatable. The film is unabashedly arthouse, name dropping Fellini while mixing animation and psychedelia. There also seems to be a message about consumerism and why supposed intellectuals are not as smart as they think they are. It is also a straight up horror movie with a witch, creepy S&M doll, and a whole lot of nudity. It is an intriguing, if not always entertaining, watch. It is a strange mix that is confusing, but also hard to turn away from. As if it is casting a spell on you…A surprisingly short lived trend was social media horror. Even to this day, there are plenty of movies made about it, but nothing has seemed to catch fire in a big way. So while Friend Request is not covering new ground, it also does not feel derivative. It is also really good; so why isn't it more popular? For everything it does right, the writing constantly does things to hold it back. It is inconsistent and overly complicated. It feels like they kept every idea they had. The end result is scary and surprisingly effective, but there are also many moments that just feel off. It also has one of the worst types of endings. Jeff Kerr returns and we harp on the rage-zombie universe in this double feature of 28 DAYS LATER and 28 WEEKS LATER. Will the world ever eventually settle on Romero type zombie dramas or are we going to keep getting RESIDENT EVIL style apocalyptic material? Is Alex Garland tied with Christopher Nolan and M. Night Shyamalan in terms of the infamous endings? How does the initial sequel actually take a cool ALIENS type approach to one-upping the original and settling for more military action? All that and more illustrating the noteworthy theme song by John Murphy!
Look UP! Its a review of Superman! Plus, more fallout from the Xbox layoffs, what's in store for Final Fantasy's future, Resident Evil gets a multiverse, and the internet can finally calm down about the Legend of Zelda movie. Also Scrubs is back with its main cast, the Emmy nominations were announced, and why no love for Cassian? That and a whole lot more.

Has it really been 20 years? 20 years since the sequel that forever changed the series, that became so divisive that it split the fan community, and yet was so groundbreaking it won numerous awards, spawned dozens of imitations and is likely the reason Resident Evil is still going strong to this day? Join the REP crew as we take you through the game from beginning to end, recounting new stories along with old experiences from our first ever playthroughs on the Nintendo Game Cube way back in 2005. What are the best tactics for the village siege? What were the developers on when they designed the castle, and why does the game still endure to this day? In the news we catch up with Resident Evil Requiem updates and the surprise announcement of new mobile game Resident Evil: Survival Unit. Guess who on the team is most excited about that one?
In this episode we're looking back at the history of Flagship—a unique studio founded by Final Fight/Street Fighter II creator Yoshiki Okamoto. Flagship received startup funding from Nintendo, Sega, and Capcom, and its game credits include everything from the Resident Evil series to Zelda and Kirby titles. We're also very intrigued by Okamoto's YouTube channel, but translating that will have to wait for another day...Kirby Conversations is part of the Sound Stone Podcast Network, a collective of independent podcasters covering video game history. Resident Evil changed everything. When originally released in 1996, what was once a niche genre for enthusiasts was now a blockbuster staple in every second home. All of a sudden people were craving zombies, horrifying monsters and disturbing themes. It was so popular that Square, far more known for its more traditional JRPGs, decided to throw its hat in the ring and make Parasite Eve.On the surface, the game appeared to be textbook survival horror. But dig a little deeper and you could see that Square was unable to escape its roots. Turn based mode happened in a sphere similar to Vagrant Story, upgrades were plentiful and incremental, and the storytelling had more cutscenes than gameplay at least in the early stages. Thematically this was still horrifying…but under the hood was a different story. Was this blend of genres ultimately successful, giving survival horror a fresh new perspective? Or is it impossible to reconcile grim resources management with the power fantasy that RPGS almost always offer? On this episode, we discuss:StoryHow does Parasite Eve use real world science to lend an air of credibility to the horrific changes that are happening all over Manhattan? Does it execute the smaller details well even if the larger picture is a bit silly at times?CombatHow enjoyable is the moment to moment real time combat of Parasite Eve? The game requires you to dodge attacks, and pick the best moment to strike. Is this too simplistic or does it work well?ProgressionHow do the weapon and armour upgrades work in Parasite Eve? Does it provide the player with a satisfying sense of progression, or is it all just a confusing mess?We answer these questions and many more on the 132nd episode of the Retro Spectives Podcast!—Intro Music: KieLoBot - Tanzen KOutro Music: Rockit Maxx - One point to anotherParasite Eve OST: Yoko Shinomura—What crazy weapon upgrade paths do you like to use? Is the NG+ mode worth playing? How is Parasite Eve 2 different from the original? This week in the news: Resident Evil director explains why characters like Leon, Chris, and Jill can't be lead a scary RE game. Is this the start of a debate larger than just the gaming industry? All this and much more on this week's Infinite Respawn Podcast!

We review Hideo Kojima's latest opus, Death Stranding 2! Plus, Resident Evil Requiem and Capcom's Not E3 2025 Spotlight, the latest viral streaming game Peak, the literal walking simulator Baby Steps, Xbox leaving the hardware market, and much more!
Hey! Welcome back. You may have noticed a lack of episode last week, and that is because of not one, but three freak acts of nature. It is not an exciting story, but it does emphasize that I might be cursed. Anyway, the delay meant that I could buy and check out Death Stranding 2. I didn't play DS1. I had seen enough of it at several E3s to know it wasn't gonna be my jam. But it is a Kojima game. So, I'd be a liar if I didn't say I was always tempted. Now, here comes a sequel. It looks like Kojima has gone maximalist. The writing? Max Kojima. Now with more combat. More stealth. More weirdness. And it hadn't been shown to death at several conventions. So... I decided to go for it. Now, I am several hours in and I am beginning to think my initial instincts were right. This one isn't for me. If you liked DS1, though? You're probably going to love DS2. My yapping to Matt about it inspired the topic for this episode, because it turns out: Matt isn't sold on a coming sequel that everyone is amped for. So, what sells us a sequel? Why did I get DS2, and why isn't he interested in Resident Evil 9?
