The bucket calls to us, and we must answer. We're doing a heft dive into the question bucket today, but first! We hit some news stories, like “Does Tom Holland Age?” and “Hey, wtf is up at Bungie?” Patrick is also getting back into VR with Resident Evil 4 VR. After the break, we take a quick look at the trailer for Haunted Chocolatier, the newly announced game from the creator of Stardew Valley, and get into the new home Chocolatier fad that Rob has the skinny on. Then we dive into the question bucket to answer some questions about… well fish, that's why we're diving obviously. Thank you Adam Bucceri! Check out their game, Enter the Survival Horror, at adam-bucceri.itch.io Ethan Winters vs Magneto and a hot topic creepy doll? And it's good? What the heck? This direct follow up to RE7 is a love letter to the series, featuring an impressive array of bosses and locations that evoke the series high points. While Ethan Winters remains as compelling as some kind of unintelligent wad of white bread, the cast of colorful weirdos around him defines the game. Check it out! WHAT ARE YA BUYING? One of the greatest games ever made and a watershed moment for the survival horror genre, RE4 boldly went where no Resident Evil game had gone before. Combining over the shoulder gameplay with tense action and amazing sound design it became the most accessible game in the series and one of the best games ever released for the GameCube. Part of the CAPCOM 5 (see last week's episode) Resident Evil 4 was exclusive for a very short period in 2005 before being ported to basically every console imaginable. Yet the GameCube version is still often cited as the proper way to play. Mike & Neil are joined by four guests of the show to discuss this masterpiece; Brian is back from the CAPCOM 5 episode to give his thoughts on the game and what he'd love to see improved in a future remake while newcomers Luke (Resident Evil Collector), Kira (Toonietwirls) and Tristan join the show to talk about some of their favourite memories of the game and why it still has such a huge audience 16 years later. The boys start the episode off by trying to think of great fourth instalments to a series (spoiler alert, there aren't many). Sit back and enjoy the ride, stranger.
We're baaaaaaaaaaaacccccccccck with your latest episode of Geekly News as we break down all the goings on in fandom! We got a little recap of DC FanDome plus more casting news from some upcoming films! Also, the MCU pushes back some of its movie slate and shares some news about a WandaVision spinoff. Add to that the return of Masters of the Universe: Revelations, Evangeline Lily figuring out Hope, trailers for Scream 5 and Resident Evil, and Chucky is back just in time for Halloween (again)!! Oh and one more thing... Eric and Pete give their feelings on Venom: Let There Be Karnage!! Lots to get through here plus sports and other stuff we've become known for! Sit back and enjoy!!
Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we add a little splice to our series on BioShock by revisiting and discussing its sequels, somewhat vaguely. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Issues covered: whether Elizabeth is a grown-up Little Sister, getting a chance to revisit Rapture, breaking cycles and circles, overstuffing the narrative space, the mechanics, Skyline rollercoasters, kitchen sink combat, trapping with vigors, combining vigors, being on the nose, dehumanizing the enemies and putting that next to more serious topics, a creator revisiting previous work, friction between teams, wanting more BioShock, "it is a big ole TWO," being able to use both types of weapons at the same time, simplifying hacking, finding new types of puzzles, fleshing out Rapture, paying off on a wish fulfillment you didn't know you have, "getting the franchise," going deeper, the difficulty of seeing someone else work on your work, the weirdness of the DLC, what would they do with a sequel, earning the ending, having more fun via creativity. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: The Lottery (Shirley Jackson), Dishonored, Fallout 3/Fallout New Vegas, Alien: Isolation, Prey, Halo (series), Daron Stinnett, Star Wars, George Lucas, Escape from New York, Arkham (series), UbiSoft, Death of the Outsider, Deathloop, Resident Evil 4, GameCube, Tantuar, Drew, The Prestige, Hannah Arendt, Ken Levine, Sunset Overdrive, Ratchet & Clank, Insomniac, Control, Todd Howard, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Notes: The quote is "There's always a lighthouse, there's always a man, there's always a city." We regret the error. Next time: Resident Evil 4! Did you use strategy guides growing up? Of course you did. These books were the holy grails of gaming in the 90's and 2000's. Even if you weren't looking for tips on how to save princesses or find material, they were just a blast to read. Like instruction manuals on steroids. But did you ever think about where those guides came from? Some poor bastard must have spent days and days sitting in a room playing all those games, finding all the coins, the secret doors, the Knights of the Round materias, right? Well, we found one of those poor bastards, and he agreed to come on the show! Doug Walsh spent eighteen years writing strategy guides, before the industry fell apart at the hands of Youtube and the internet. He wrote a fantastic book about his time as a gaming guru, The Walkthrough: Insider Tales from a Life in Strategy Guides, and he's my guest on the podcast this week. We talk about his time in the industry, some of the highlights and lowlights of his career, and he gives us an idea of what went into writing those guides we all grew up with. This is one of my favourite episodes to date, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. (Check out Doug's socials at the end of this description and show him some love.) And before we talk to Doug, I squeeze in another edition of the 'Remember The Game Infamous Intro'! This week, I weigh in on Kotaku telling people they can emulate Metroid Dread already (with a guest appearance by Angry Adam). I talk about how I balance my gaming time and what motivates me to finish as many games as I do. And with Halloween right around the corner, I reveal the one horror movie franchise I watch fairly religiously. PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring some zombie-centric titles - Dead Island, Resident Evil 5, and DeadRising! Are you on social media? Of course you are. This week on the podcast, Spooktober continues as we add Resident Evil 4 to the Endless List of Video Games. Our 2nd Resident Evil game on the list, and one of the best games of its generation, Resident Evil 4 brought back Leon S Kennedy in an adventure to rural Spain. He must save the President's daughter from a brutal cult. The game is known for innovating in the third person shooter genre and reinventing the Resident Evil series. Where did it land on our Endless List? Find out on the podcast or check out the complete list on our medium page.
This week's regularly scheduled Essential Scares has been replaced with a throwback episode! If you've been following us since before we were codified as Essential Scares this one will be new to you; if you were around before, this is an oldie (but a goodie!). For our first episode of #Retroween2021, we're revisiting a series we haven't covered since 2017 -- we're looking at the Dreamcast entry in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil: Code Veronica! This is one of the last games in the series to have the "Tank controls" that the original game did, and it was the first in the series on (what was at the time) a next generation console. This one hasn't had a remake yet-- is it one that should? We also answer a TON of listener mail, so stick around to see if we answered yours! Want to get right to the game? This week, Doug is joined by Twitch streamer and friend Wulfslore to chat about the trailer for Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, what scares them the most in horror movies, and the short horror film that was written by an AI bot. The dorks then dig into a question posted in the Mind Gap Discord: would you rather restart your life at the age of 10 with all the knowledge you have now or jump to 45 years old with $50 million in the bank? Things are wrapped up with a throw-down featuring Leon Kennedy from the Resident Evil franchise vs. Ash Williams from the Evil Dead franchise. Tune in to find out who wins! A landmark in the video game industry and ultimately, a massive disappointment Capcom and Nintendo fans alike. What started as a promise for 5 exclusive game to come to the GameCube (Dead Phoenix, Killer 7, PN03, Viewtiful Joe, and Resident Evil 4) turned into a quick flip of these franchises to other consoles and ultimately the demise of these extremely original IPs other than RE4 of course. In this week's episode Mike & Neil do a deep dive into this unique moment in video game history and bring on friends of the show Ali and Brian to help them in their journey. They also cover Viewtiful Joe 2 and Red Hot Rumble, and wonder if we'll ever see a proper final entry into this trilogy.

Rockstar announces a remastered GTA trilogy coming soon to consoles and mobile, but will a revamped GTA 3, Vice City, and San Andreas be a great way to gear up for an eventual GTA VI? And Josh is upset at Burger King and its kid's meal toys diminishing returns. We also have a weekend Box Office report that covers No Time To Die's win here in the United States, but did it meet analysts' expectations? On today's IGN The Fix: Games, After many, many leaks, Rockstar Games has officially announced the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy - The Definitive Edition, comprising Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas. The updated games will be released for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC (via the Rockstar Games Launcher) "later this year". Mobile ports will follow next year. Square Enix and Crystal Dynamics have added the option to pay for XP and resource collection boosts using real money in Marvel's Avengers. The move has been slated by many fans who believe it offers a stark contrast to previous statements made surrounding the game's monetization tactics. Resident Evil 7: Biohazard has become the first game in the series to ship over ten million copies, Capcom confirms. As announced in a press release, Capcom says that Resident Evil 7 has set new milestones for the company as it becomes the first game in the series to ship over ten million units globally. It's worth pointing out that shipped copies are those sent to retailers, as opposed to sold copies, which have been bought by players. Seth has all that in your Daily Fix!
