Patreon.com/RememberTheGame Everyone around RTG Industries knows I love the NES, and the best games in the NES library are practically royalty around here. That exclusive list includes the Mario trilogy, both Contras, a ton of Mega Man, and of course, the legendary Mike Tyson's Punch-Out... I have been trying to beat this game on and off for almost 35 years and still haven't reached the top of the mountain. For the longest time, Soda Popinski was my kryptonite. I couldn't beat him as a kid, and he just held court over me (is that a term?) every time I went up against him. I've finally slayed that demon, but the illusive Mike Tyson victory still evades me. For now, anyway. But that doesn't matter. Modern tough games make me crazy, but NES tough games are my torture of choice. I don't think I'll ever get tired of playing Punch-Out, and every couple years I fall into its clutches and spend a month or two swearing at little ref Mario. It's practically a perfect game and I'll tell you why on this episode. And before I get knocked out, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks where most of our listeners are located, so I share some stats. Is there a genre of game I discovered later in life and fell in love with? And what 5 Switch games would I recommend to a newcomer? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! This one features 3 NES sports classics: Tecmo Super Bowl, Ice Hockey, and Baseball Stars. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Patreon.com/RememberTheGame I have been wanting to talk about poker video games for about 200 episodes now, and finally decided to spoil myself (thanks Flanders) and dedicate an episode of the show to the video game ports of the card game I love so much. It's too bad they kinda suck. I think you could fire up World Series of Poker today and be pretty underwhelmed. It's ugly, the career mode is pretty thin, and the AI is trash. But back in 2005 when I fell in love with poker and didn't have the bankroll to play at the casino, this was where I got my fix when I couldn't get a home game together. I have a soft, soft spot in my heart for not only the WSOP video games, but WPT and Stacked as well, and I get into all of them this week in a rare solo episode. And before I shuffle up and deal, I put together another edition of the Infamous Intro! This week, someone asks if I've ever written any jokes about gaming for my comedy act? I address the barrage of Titanfall 2 DMs I've gotten lately. And is GTA 6 worth $100? Plus we play another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', too! In this episode, Bryan is joined by guests Jacob and JD to discuss quality control (QC), punch out procedures, and best practices in HVAC installation and service. The conversation delves deep into the various aspects of maintaining high standards in workmanship, from aesthetic considerations to technical performance metrics that affect system longevity. The discussion begins with an exploration of workmanship quality and how to instill pride in work among team members. The guests share insights about the importance of company culture in maintaining high standards, emphasizing that quality control isn't just about catching mistakes but about fostering an environment where everyone takes ownership of their work. They discuss how photo documentation can be a powerful tool for quality control, allowing team members to review work remotely and catch issues that might be missed in the field. The conversation then shifts to the more technical aspects of quality control, particularly focusing on procedures that affect system longevity but might not be immediately visible to clients. This includes proper brazing techniques, pulling adequate vacuums, and proper system charging. The guests emphasize the importance of having a culture where team members hold each other accountable for following proper procedures, even when cutting corners might be tempting. The episode concludes with a detailed discussion about working with inspectors and handling code compliance, offering practical advice for maintaining good relationships with authorities having jurisdiction (AHJ) while ensuring work meets all necessary standards. Key Topics Covered: Importance of workmanship appearance and aesthetic quality Role of company culture in maintaining high standards Using photo documentation for quality control Technical procedures that affect system longevity Methods for ensuring proper installation procedures are followed Dealing with inspectors and code compliance Characteristics of good punch-out personnel Balance between production speed and quality Importance of praise and constructive criticism in quality control Strategies for reducing punch list items Building relationships with inspectors Handling code interpretation disagreements Value of being a trades generalist for punch work Impact of workmanship on inspector relationships Have a question that you want us to answer on the podcast? Show Notes On this week's podcast, Dan's pick for the Alphabet Soup-er Series was Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2, a game that Kris has surprisingly never played. How does it hold up? Is the game as good as its soundtrack? How many dumb skateboarding terms can Kris conjure to make it sound like he know what he's talking about? Let's find out! Then, in Week Old News, Sony hit us with a rather impressive State of Play, including fresh looks at Monster Hunter, that new Shinobi game, and more. Plus, Jeff Minter reimagines yet another Atari arcade classic, the creator of Dadish is back with an emotionally unstable cactus, PSN's outage raises preservation questions, and more. Finally, Dan still hasn' tbeen able to play much since his hands aren't working all that well, and Kris got hit with a snow day, so his playtime was truncated as well. But he did get to see the new Captain America movie, which was pretty rad. Enjoy! What's New at Stone Age Gamer Win a Mega EverDrive Pro! A guide to the fascinating legal history of the videogame industry, written for nonlawyers. Why did a judge recall FIFA 15, a nonviolent soccer game, from French shelves in 2014? Why was Vodka Drunkenski, a character in Nintendo-Japan's Punch-Out!, renamed Soda Popinski in the US and then in Western Europe, where the pun made no sense? Why was a Dutch-American company barred by US courts from distributing a clone of Pac-Man? Julien Mailland answers all these questions and more in The Game That Never Ends: How Lawyers Shape the Videogame Industry (MIT Press, 2024), an inside look at the legal history that undergirds our favorite videogames. Drawing on a series of case studies as vignettes of the human comedy, Mailland sheds light on why and how the role of lawyers is key for understanding the videogame industry. Each chapter in The Game That Never Ends is a mini-puzzle that pieces together how an important legal issue arose, was resolved, and impacted the industry and the experience of gamers in real time. These chapters are interspersed with shorter chapters called “The Lawyer's Corner,” opportunities to dive deeper into individual cases. Lightly footnoted, these interludes connect the previous chapters together by providing a conceptual meta-analysis. Offering a comprehensive overview of the global legal history of videogames, The Game That Never Ends will leave readers with a nuanced, in-depth, and more global understanding of the videogame industry. Rudolf Thomas Inderst (*1978) enjoys video games since 1985. He received a master's degree in political science, American cultural studies as well as contemporary and recent history from Ludwig-Maximilians-University, Munich and holds two PhDs in game studies (LMU & University of Passau). Currently, he's teaching as a professor for game design at the IU International University for Applied Science, has submitted his third dissertation at the University of Vechta, holds the position as lead editor at the online journal Titel kulturmagazin for the game section, hosts the German local radio show Replay Value and is editor of the weekly game research newsletter DiGRA D-A-CH Game Studies Watchlist. A guide to the fascinating legal history of the videogame industry, written for nonlawyers. Why did a judge recall FIFA 15, a nonviolent soccer game, from French shelves in 2014? It wasn't pretty, but a victory nonetheless. Tua, Tyreek and the rest of the Miami Dolphins survive week one against a game Jaguars team, 20-17. A slow first half after a crazy pre-game incident involving Tyreek and the police, led to a re-focused effort in the second half, and a come from behind, walk-off victory capped off by Jason Sanders kicking a 52-yarder to win it. Along the way, Tua found Hill for an 80 yard score, Jevon Holland literally punched a touchdown away from Jacksonville and Jaelen Phillips put the entire league on notice that he is all the way back from his Achilles injury.
