YOU GOT BOOST POWER. The fastest game on earth comes to the GameCube virtual console and Mike & Neil can barely keep up! Marcello (@gamecubegalaxy) joins the show to offer his views on the port and the history behind one of the most unique, frustrating, and exilerating games that has ever been released. With it's inclusion in the day one lineup of the GameCube's online service, the boys can only hope that this means a new game is not that far away…

This was a frustrating experience. My first thought after booting up Evil Dead: The Game was, "Wow, this is prettier than I was expecting," followed immediately by, "Damn, I wish this was just a normal-ass single-player game. As I played the tutorials and eventually a handful of games, my disappointment and sadness only grew as the tutorial did a poor job of preparing me for a real match. Even once I started to "get it," I still wished Evil Dead: The Game was a single-player game instead of a live-service game; however, a live-service game it is (or was) and as many do, like the name of the game, this one is dead.
Today, we're descending into the depths of Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, the 2002 GameCube classic that dared to blur the line between player and character. We begin by exploring how Canadian developer Silicon Knights transitioned from strategy games to psychological horror under the guidance of Denis Dyack, with Eternal Darkness evolving from a Nintendo 64 project into one of the GameCube's most ambitious launch titles. Along the way, we examine the game's Lovecraftian influences, complex narrative spanning centuries, and groundbreaking sanity system that played tricks on players' minds in unforgettable ways. Though it struggled commercially, its critical acclaim and cult following secured its legacy as a pioneer in interactive horror. So steel your nerves and question your reality—it's time for a sanity-shattering trip down Memory Card Lane! Find out more at https://a-trip-down-memory-card-lane.pinecast.co
I've played many a Need for Speed game, but not one has frustrated me as much as Need for Speed Unbound. It may have a great sense of style and take place in a fictionalized version of my hometown--a not-so-great take on Chicago--but that's not enough to make up for its annoying structure, frustrating race design, and cheap AI. It also shouldn't come as a surprise that the story is shit, but I doubt anyone was expecting a great story in their racing game. Long story short, the fun was unfound in Need for Speed Unbound.

Read transcriptHold onto your utility belts and prepare for maximum overdrive, because this week on Play Comics we're crash-landing straight into the chaotic world of Teen Titans for PS2, Xbox, and GameCube – a game that somehow managed to capture the essence of being a superhero teenager while simultaneously making you question whether saving the world is worth the carpel tunnel. Released in 2006, this beat-'em-up bonanza promised players the chance to live out their fantasies of being part of the most dysfunctional yet lovable superhero team this side of Titans Tower. Joining us for this digital adventure through Jump City's finest is none other than Eilish Pickett from my friendly neighborhood comic shop – a true connoisseur of all things four-color and someone who's probably seen more comic-to-game adaptations crash and burn than a Cyborg system malfunction. Together, we'll dive deep into whether this particular pixelated punch-fest managed to do justice to the beloved Cartoon Network series that ran from 2003 to 2006, or if it ended up being more disappointing than Beast Boy's attempt at stand-up comedy. From Robin's acrobatic staff-spinning to Raven's dark magic mayhem, this game promised to let you switch between all five Titans in real-time while delivering the kind of cooperative chaos that only comes from trying to coordinate a superhero team where one member transforms into animals and another shoots laser beams from her eyes. Whether you're here for the nostalgic trip back to simpler times when the biggest worry was whether Starfire would accidentally destroy the kitchen again, or you're just curious about how well this adaptation stacked up against the source material, grab your communicator and settle in. This episode is guaranteed to be more entertaining than watching Cyborg try to explain why his breakfast took up half the grocery budget, and definitely more coherent than trying to follow Beast Boy's logic during a heated argument about tofu. Learn such things as: Has there been another rotating team in comics that so ironically across the board has the same lineup? What happens when you just can't find the main villain in the game? How do you limit the power sets of characters who have basically unlimited power sets? And so much more! You can find Eilish on Tumbler @aliceheart247 if you really want to. But mostly just figure out where I live and go to my local comic shop. If you want to be a guest on the show please check out the Be a A Guest on the Show page and let me know what you're interested in. WELCOME TO THE STAGE OF HISTORY. It's time to talk about the GameCube virtual console and the three “launch” games so to speak, starting the trilogy with Soul Calibur II, a game Mike & Neil covered over 4 years ago and now get to look at with fresh eyes. Friend of the show Luigi (@luigisappartment) joins the episode to dive into the world of Link, the Soul Edge, and the unique relationship Nintendo and Namco had in the early 2000s that made this nearly unthinkable inclusion happen.
"Use Duality to control two bodies in real-time, letting you defend two sites at once, cover your own cross, or even trade yourself." Sounds pretty cool, right? Sadly, as cool as Spectre Divide sounded in concept, it never quite reached those levels in practice. Part of that comes down to the shooting--which was just okay--but the whole "Duality" system never felt like more than in gimmick in what little time I put into the game. Maybe its intricacies needed time to be discovered, but with it shutting down only a few weeks after its console release (and six months after its PC release), it never really got the chance.

Behold the second and final episode of my Attack the Backlog review of Grounded. While I really liked the game overall, one mission almost made me rage quit the game. I managed to get through it in the end, but it did leave a sour taste in my mouth and somewhat tarnished what is a mostly great game.

It doesn't matter if you're first to an idea, if you don't execute it well enough, someone else can swoop in and steal your thunder before you even manage to throw your lightning. That's the case with Stampede: Racing, a battle royale kart racer where you start with 60 players and gradually whittle it down to one after reaching select checkpoints during a race. Sound familiar? It should, because it's basically Mario Kart World's Knockout Tour mode (and also way more similar to something like Fall Guys than Fortnite). Now, I don't know if Stampede was actually first to this idea, but I think we can all agree Knockout Tour refined the idea and made it into something that's tons of fun and will last in a way Stampede never was and will never get a chance to be.

Behold the first part of my review of Grounded. It's been a long time coming. I tried playing and streaming the game once before, but got so annoyed with the chat that I rage quit both the game and streaming for years. Fast-forward to now and things are very different, not only did chat never bother me when I streamed the game--you can check out the archive for my entire playthrough if you want--I also had a great time with the game and look forward to playing and seeing more (even though I will never not be scared whenever a spider shows up).

I had a taste for more Star Wars after playing through both Star Wars Jedi games and rewatching most of the movies and shows. I could have played something new, something I never played before, but opted for something I remembered fondly: Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. My memory of the game was that it wasn't amazing, but achieved what it set out to do: deliver a satisfying Jedi power fantasy; however, sometimes things are left best as memories and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed is exactly that. Instead of getting the power fantasy I expected, I got a frustrating reality of sadness and disappointment.
Broforce is a lot of fun...until it isn't. What do I mean by this? I don't mean what you probably think--that it's fun for a while and eventually stops being fun--but that it's best enjoyed in small doses instead of large ones. I played Broforce two nights in a row for roughly four hours each night and the same thing happened both nights: after about hour two, I started to get annoyed and frustrated with the game and stopped enjoying it. Long story short, I'd recommend Broforce to most--especially if you have a friend or two to play it with (even though it can get quite hectic)--just make sure you keep your sessions on the shorter side if you don't want to lose your mind.
Read transcriptHULK SMASH… your expectations! This week on Play Comics, we're going green with rage as we dive into 2005's The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction – the game that asked the important question: “What if we gave players the power to literally punch a helicopter out of the sky and then use a bus as a baseball bat?” Developed by Radical Entertainment for the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube, this comic book adaptation threw subtlety out the window faster than Banner throws a tantrum. Forget stealth missions or carefully planned strategies – this game was all about embracing your inner gamma-powered toddler and turning entire city blocks into your personal sandbox of destruction. Joining us for this episode of controlled chaos is Matt Storm from the fantastic podcasts “Fun” and Games and Reignite! They'll help us explore how this title managed to capture the pure, unadulterated joy of being an unstoppable force of nature with anger management issues. Together, we'll discuss whether throwing cars at military helicopters counts as a valid combat strategy, and why sometimes the best solution to every problem is just… more smashing. So strap in, podcast listeners – we're about to go from zero to “HULK STRONGEST THERE IS!” faster than you can say “you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.” Warning: No buildings, vehicles, or military installations were harmed in the making of this episode… but we can't make the same promise about our gaming controllers. HULK PODCAST! Learn such things as: Does anyone want to play as Bruce Banner? Will anyone write a comic based on a game that's based on a comic? Is this game just a modern retelling of Rampage? And if so, is that a problem? And so much more! NEW FORMAT TEST!YO! AJ HERE! It's been a while! I've been thinking about ways to utilize the Directly to You channels in a way that will help grow Re:Direct as a whole and one of the ways I landed on was to start to upload them on the podcast feed & see if it resonates with people while HOPEFULLY not cannibalizing the main bread & butter.HERE'S WHAT I'M THINKING! Every week I (mostly) I upload scripted videos to YouTube in a video essay format - these videos are definitely enhanced with the visual context but they don't necessarily NEED to be consumed in this way so they would be a good fit here.In addition to that, I stream (at least) 3 times a week on Twitch. These streams vary in format and in topic & to be fully transparent in use case. Namely, I started a retrospective series where I am playing through the main series Pokemon games on stream to see if they aged well enough to validate the notion of "Game Freak getting lazy) with the end goal of consolidating that experience and my thoughts on each game into a hybrid format of a stream cutdown, a video review, & a standard Re:Direct video essay. THESE STREAMS do not make sense to upload here because it's a mix of me talking about the game(s) and a bunch of other stuff you need the video and the chat to have context to AND EVEN MORE IMPORTANTLY paid members get access to that sort of ancillary content for main channel videos. These streams don't fit here. HOWEVER there are streams that I do and that I plan to do that are MUCH more podcast-like. Tier Lists, Reactions, Discussions, & things of that ilk will happen on stream as we enter the Switch 2 era & those will show up here.LET ME KNOW THOUGHTS Either in comments of platforms that have them, or on socials, or in the RD Discord. All of which will be link in the shownotes for THIS video/audio log thing below. As far as that is concerned, I'm just gonna copy and paste the description lol.Support Re:Direct through our Memberships &/or Merch!

It's another patron request, sans Billy, as we take on Baldur's Gate : Dark Alliance for the PS2! It was also released on the XBox, GameCube, and even the GBA, but we both played it on the PS2 for this episode. This is a Diablo-style game, but based in the world of Dungeons and Dragons, and has a far more action-arcade style than the previous Baldur's Gate games had -- but is that good or bad?
