RC Pro-Am is not only one of my favourite games on the NES, but it's one of the best games in that iconic little grey box's library. And I'll be damned if I'm gonna sit here and let anyone say anything different. Fortunately, nobody seems to be.    The game is pretty basic. There's no real car customization, no multi-player, it only features one game mode, and there isn't even any in-game music, but none of that matters. You control a red car, you try to drive faster than blue, green and (cheating) yellow cars, and it's just a really fun experience. The game is over thirty years old, and I'll argue it's as playable today as it was back in the 80's.   My buddy Brad is my guest this week, and we talked about how less was more when it came to the NES sometimes, with RC Pro-Am being exhibit A for that argument. We also touched on the fact that this was the beginning of great things for RARE as a developer, and how I didn't realize "R.C" stood for "remote control" until about a week ago...    And before we talk about my incompetence, it's time for another edition of the 'Remember The Game Infamous Intro'!    This week, we talked about how some games are synonymous with their creators (Hideo Kojima, specifically), and whether or not that's a detriment to the games themselves. Someone asks how often I get "you should play _____" messages, and how I respond to them. And I share my initial thoughts on Metroid Dread (it's very, very good.)   PLUS, we have another round of 'Play One, Remake One, Erase One', featuring some retro racers  - Super Off-Road, Uniracers, and Virtua Racing!   Are you on social media? Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we continue our series on BioShock. We talk a lot about the surprise of the scene of Ryan, and some mechanical and production aspects we haven't had a chance to talk about yet. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Sections played: Up to Apollo Square! Issues covered: where the game should (?) have ended, playing golf with your dad, finding a way to incorporate a power station, Ryan the abstract monster vs Ryan the concrete monster, changing the lens you view Ryan through, rationalizing one's choices, the red yarn board, forcing the player to see a scene the way they want you to, egocentric Ryan and seeing oneself as a tragic hero, every villain as the hero of his own story, mythological framing, other ways you could tackle player agency here, "The Cake Is A Lie," the Irish charmer becoming the Irish thug, using Atlas to puff out Ryan as a monster, the many many layers of references and archetypes, all that matters to me is me and all that matters to you is you, killing people who are much like you, differentiating the Little Sisters in the Tenenbaum section, the mind-control plasmid, walking a tightrope with difficulty and challenge, mixing up your plasmids, the simplicity of upgrades, some numbers change or more things can be impacted, not feeling the power of tonics and plasmids, lack of builds, the limited number of axes across which powers and weapons apply, compressing the depth, modularity in world construction, solid art direction, regularity in the built world, kit-bashing, a couple of kind reviews, dealing with issues of preservation, what gets lost, wanting leaders to do more, having let's plays for reference.

Death Stranding is arguably Hideo Kojima's most polarizing game. But it's one worth persevering through. Death Stranding is a game that is like an onion with some deep, deep layers. In this episode, Matt Millsap and Henry Rigdon join Logan to help peel back those layers to see if Death Stranding stinks or surprisingly smells like a rose. This is something that was noticeably absent from many reviews and reactions when it first came out. There was plenty of talk about how the game is a walking simulator in many a review but is Death Stranding merely a walking simulator? On today's IGN The Fix: Games, Remedy has announced a full remaster of its cult-classic Alan Wake, due to arrive this fall on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC (via Epic Games Store). Perhaps more excitingly, it opens the door more than ever for Alan Wake 2 to come down the line. After a leak last week, Remedy and publisher Epic announced that Alan Wake Remastered would come with both of the game's expansions, allow for 4K resolution, and will include a new commentary from creative director Sam Lake. No official release date has been announced, but the previous retailer leaks have pointed to October 5. PlayStation boss Jim Ryan announced in an updated PlayStation Blog post that Horizon: Forbidden West will offer a PS4-PS5 upgrade path. Players that purchase the game on PS4 will also get a PS5 version at no extra cost. Ryan also announced that moving forward, all first-party PlayStation exclusives that are cross-gen will offer a $10 digital upgrade path, regardless of whether or not you purchase the game digitally or physically on PS4. The PS4-PS5 upgrade path will also include the upcoming sequel to God of War and Gran Turismo 7. Legendary game designer Hideo Kojima seems to be teasing the new Matrix movie on Twitter, but it's not entirely clear why. 18 years have passed since the release of Matrix Revolutions, the series' last installment. However, with the franchise set to revive itself with the release of The Matrix Resurrections in theatres and on HBO Max this December 22, fans are currently scouring the internet for new content about the film. Brian has all that in your Daily Fix!

Hideo Kojima is a name that continues to be tossed around on a partnership for Xbox, but it appears his work with PlayStation isn't finished if reports of a Death Stranding 2 are to be trusted. Is this a case of a mistranslated quote from actor Norman Reedus or will Kojima play both sides of the fence? Knowing the optics of the situation, you would have to assume that Xbox would like to isolate the legendary director. In other news, Xbox has announced a showcase of sorts for Tokyo Game Show. After Gamescom, the industry learned their lesson that the term "showcase" doesn't mean information galore and you may not even be able to trust that its biggest games are there. With expectations firmly in check, Matty and Cog dive into how Xbox needs to make strong moves to become a global brand. From localization to establishing new talent, it has been a consistent weak spot for the brand. The most important question asked in our show's history has also been answered: would we rather watch our parents do it everyday for the rest of our lives or join in once? It's an Xbox gaming show, what did you expect? A clever third answer just may raise its head... Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On today's IGN The Fix: Games, Cloud gaming is coming to Xbox Series X, Xbox Series S, and Xbox One this holiday, allowing Game Pass Ultimate subscribers to stream over 100 games on their consoles without needing to download them - including playing next-gen games on last-gen hardware. Announced during the Gamescom Xbox Stream 2021, the move is a huge step further towards making Xbox games available on almost any device, allowing all compatible Game Pass games to be streamed without downloading or waiting for installs. Xbox points out that this is a useful way to try games before committing to downloading them or to jump straight into multiplayer games with friends without causing the whole party to wait. During Microsoft's Gamescom 2021 Xbox showcase, Humble Games announced a robust lineup of 10 games coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one. These indie titles join an already packed roster of games and span many genres. Some of the games include Archvale, Chinatown Detective Agency, Dodgeball Academia, Next Space Rebels, and Signalis. In a hilariously dark, perfectly Kojima way, the Games Industry legend celebrated his 58th birthday with a solemn vow. Hideo Kojima tweeted about his age and "declining" body but reassured fans that his creativity is as sharp as it's ever been. The Death Stranding and Metal Gear creator also promised to continue creating as long as his brain will allow. Kim has all that in your Daily Fix!

One of the most beloved franchises of all time makes its debut on NES, though not its actual debut; the Metal Gear Nintendo fans knew and enjoyed back in the 8-bit era was in fact a port of a minor hit for MSX/2 home computers that had shipped about a year earlier in Japan. Although Metal Gear gets the broad strokes right on NES, it trips up over a lot of minor details. And some major ones, too. Still, if a compromised take on a classic is the one that a million former NES owners knew and enjoyed back in the '80s, there's something to be said even for that clumsier rendition of the game. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we at last conclude our series on Final Fantasy VI. We give our takeaways and then turn to some of the mountain of feedback that's been piling up. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Issues covered: June says hello, developing deep character backstories, differing combat mechanics for each character, being pushed to mix parties at the end of the game, full world state changes, going against the grain, going dark places, getting a lot out of their engine and their small set of sprites, stretching beyond your audience's expectations, the alienness of opera, merging exploration with linear story, not knowing what order the story might come in, storylets and minimum expectations of how much game you get, Brett's Book Recommendation, dealing with the end of the world, having trouble getting past an early fight, a strange fan theory, having lots of story and wanting to split the characters, cautioning against reading too much into "original plans," marketing input, the contrasts of Terra and Celes, games as products of their constraints, the business constraints of a changing technology base with many developers, Terra's special ability, input lag in the Anthology, more about the weird Relm sketch glitz, how tools lag, higher fan expectations, the slowing of velocity with each generation, going towards the lowest common denominator or what we know works. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Sebastian Deken, biostats, Chrono Trigger, Baldur's Gate, BioWare, Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Ultima (series), Gold Box (series), Wizardry, Dungeons & Dragons, SNES, Batman (obliquely), Shadow of the Colossus, God of War (series), Deus Ex, The Uninhabitable Earth, David Wallace-Wells, Death Stranding, Logan Wells, Skyrim, Star Wars, Sega, Phantasy Star, Wes from DFW, Ted Turner, The Museum of Film and Television, Mikael Danielsson, Sam, Johnny Pockets, Valheim, Cyberpunk, The Witcher III, Marvel, Wonder Woman, John Romero, DOOM (1993), Quake, Stardew Valley, Ratchet & Clank, PS3, Hideo Kojima, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Podcast breakdown: 0:51 Interview 1:05:21 Break 1:06:03 Outro Issues covered: not being able to talk about video game music, researching live performances of video game music, pitching Boss Fight Books, playing a friend's copy of Final Fantasy, racking up Blockbuster fines from pushing the rental, knowing that you're a musician from early on, studying to be an opera singer, having punishing stage fright for performance, getting into the Columbia MFA program, getting a great thesis advisor, the influence of prog rock on FF6's soundtrack, "the steampunk of music," Celtic music as an influence, the other influences you hear, having the Chocobos take you out of the game, the transitions from overworld to Zozo, knowing what to expect from a game vs not, needing a quilt of a game to quilt the music, planet-hopping, doing a lot of work through the music, having to find a way to talk about music through analogy, showing a few examples visually, the subtlety of Relm's musical number, sassy Relm, getting the whole story about Shadow and Relm through multiple playthroughs, the opera scene and "how is it possible," not making any sense to get the airship this way, the game as an opera with a three act structure, reflecting back what's happening in the game, opera as a strange confluence of factors, transcendant beauty that stays with you, opera as its own answer, needing to hear something as an 8x8 square, maintaining the illusion, matches of fidelity, the viewpoint on opera, not being meant to see people up close in opera. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: biostats, Brett White, Boss Fight Books, NES, StarTropics, Dragon Quest, Matt Shafeek, Gabe Durham, GameCube, Kirk Hamilton, Strong Songs, St Louis Symphony, Upright Citizen's Brigade, Margo Jefferson, Michael Jackson, Koichi Sugiyama, Nomuo Uematsu, Mario (series), Nine Inch Nails, Ennio Morricone, Indiana Jones, Baldur's Gate, JRR Tolkien, Ultima, Skyrim, Elder Scrolls (series), Forgotten Realms, Super Mario RPG, Ryan Thompson, Cosi fan tutte, La traviata, Otello, Puccini, Ingmar Bergman, The Magic Flute, Kenneth Branagh, Hamlet, Spelunky, Derek Yu, ZZT, Anna Anthropy, Epic Games, Tim Sweeney, Death Stranding, Hideo Kojima, Dragon Quest Builders, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Assassin's Creed joins the fray of single player platforms that will be supported for years. In yet another report, it is revealed that much like Halo Infinite, Assassin's Creed will have a platform boasting multiple settings which will be added to for many years to come. How does this shift the single player landscape? The prospect of Xbox extracting one of the dominant players in the PlayStation space certainly is tantalizing and it looks like they plan to make big moves to ensure it goes according to their desires. Aside from that, EA is looking to resurrect (HA!) Dead Space! Hailing from EA Motive, it is reportedly a re-imagining and not a direct sequel.
