Using Romans 8-26-39, John 6-26-44, and Chapter 3 of the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith we introduced and began a discussion of the Decree and Sovereignty of God as the foundation for the entire redemptive narrative of the Church, His body, and the assurance of our salvation.

Last time we examined the astonishing and life-changing affirmation of the Confession that God has unchangeably and freely and eternally decreed “whatsoever comes to pass.” But does this make God the author of sin? Does this not destroy the liberty, responsibility, and significance of the wills of men and angels? This week Stephen enters chapter 3 of the confession and the subject of God's Decree. Stephen as per the confession breaks this down into 3 sections: a) Universal Nature of God's Decree, b) No Foreknowledge of the Decree, c) The Result of God's Decree in either Salvation or Condemnation.

The Bible clearly teaches that God knows all things, and that God has purposed all things. This means that all things, in God's time, will bring glory to Him, even that which we do not understand now. This principle is clearly played out in the life of Joseph, where we see the decree of God and the way that it relates to one that belongs to Him.
Coalt and Jay continue in their discussion of the London Baptist Confession of Faith on God's Decree. Today we look at Chapter 3 and paragraphs 3-5.
Coalt and Jay start on chapter 3 of the 2nd London Baptist Confession on God's Decree.
God had decreed in Himself, before the world was, concerning all things, whether necessary, accidental or voluntary, with all the circumstances of them, to work, dispose, and bring about all things according to the counsel of His own will, to His glory: (Yet without being the [chargeable] author of sin, or having fellowship with any therein) in which appears His wisdom in disposing all things, unchangeableness, power, and faithfulness in accomplishing His decree: And God hath before the foundation of the world, foreordained some men to eternal life, through Jesus Christ, to the praise and glory of His grace; [having foreordained and] leaving the rest in their sin to their just condemnation, to the praise of His justice.
Today (episode 68) we continue the theology series by briefly touching on the decree, plan, and providence of God as well as having a double feature on Justification by Faith alone and the doctrine of regeneration. The guys are back on the 1689, this time wrapping up Chapter 3 on God's Decree by discussing the final paragraph. Why must we be careful with the doctrines of God’s decree and unconditional election? How do these truths relate to the Christian’s assurance of salvation? And how should all of this lead us to a healthy “praise, reverence, and admiration of God, and of humility, diligence, and abundant consolation”? Plus, high people are not funny, and the guys argue over "bread and butter" vs "meat and potatoes".
Joe and Jimmy are back at the cigar shop walking through the 1689 Confession and dial in on chapter 3 paragraphs 4 through 6. If the number of the elect is fixed and cannot increase or decrease should be discouraged or encouraged? How does this doctrine impact our evangelism? Plus, Jimmy gets impatient when a regular at the cigar shop stops by to chat. For all the links a d show notes head over to www.doctrineandevotion.com/podcast/1689346
The guys received an email from a listener asking questions about the doctrine of God's Decree as it relates to the God's sovereignty over sin. How can God cause all things to work together for his purpose and yet not be the author of sin? How do we make sense of those passages where God seems to change his mind? For more on these subjects be sure to listen to our episodes: Does God Change His Mind?, The Decree of God, and Prayer. RECOMMENDATION Manual of Theology by J.L. Dagg For all the links and show notes visit www.doctrineanddevotion.com/podcast/decree-questions
The guys are back on the 1689 Confession and cover chapter 3 paragraphs 2 and 3. What is the sovereign choice of God to save individuals based upon? What's the difference between predestination and reprobation? What is the goal of his decree? And how should these doctrines impact our piety? Plus, a neighbor with a leaf blower drives Joe nuts while recording this episode.

Work It OutThis is Rev. Bob Spears’ from Sunday, August 21, 2016. The scripture is Jeremiah 1:4-10. In our service we read from the New Revised Standard Version and from The Message, a modern interpretation by Eugene Peterson. We read both with the hope that our understanding will be enriched. This is from The Message:4 This is what God said: 5 "Before I shaped you in the womb, I knew all about you. Before you saw the light of day, I had holy plans for you: A prophet to the nations - that's what I had in mind for you." 6 But I said, "Hold it, Master God! Look at me. I don't know anything. I'm only a boy!" 7 God told me, "Don't say, 'I'm only a boy.' I'll tell you where to go and you'll go there. I'll tell you what to say and you'll say it. 8 Don't be afraid of a soul. I'll be right there, looking after you." God's Decree. 9 God reached out, touched my mouth, and said, "Look! I've just put my words inyour mouth - hand-delivered! 10 See what I've done? I've given you a job to do among nations and governments - a red-letter day! Your job is to pull up and tear down, take apart and demolish, And then start over, building and planting." Stand Up and Say Your PieceThe New Revised Standard Version can be found here.

Dr. Flowers rebuts several points from Dr. Piper's sermon at Together For the Gospel on the depravity of fallen man. Are all people born haters of God by divine decree? Let's dive in.
Yes indeed, it won't be long now." God's Decree. "Things are going to happen so fast your head will swim. One thing fast on the heels of the other. You won't be able to keep up. Everything will be happening at once—and everywhere you look, blessings! Blessings like wine pouring off the mountains and hills. God will make everything right again for you. (Amos 9:13-15 (MSG)). We have been talking about restoration, new beginnings, new seasons, the best is yet come, success, from the pit to the palace, celebration, and unprecedented favor. Now I believe is the time for the culmination of all of what God has been speaking. However, you know there are always contingencies. So, please join us to find out what they are so that what God has promised this year will be manifested.
