496. Summer Sippers: Five Finished Whiskeys for Hot Days and Cool Nights

The Bourbon Road

Play Episode Listen Later May 20, 2026 47:36

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter settle into the Bourbon Road bar for a warm-weather tasting session built around one unifying theme: light-proof, finished whiskeys perfect for summer sipping. The pair reconnect after Jim's trip to Branson and Todd's afternoon on the soccer sidelines, pouring five bottles that span maple syrup barrels, maple wood chunks, raw honey, port wine casks, and even an old fashioned cocktail mixer barrel — each one bringing its own creative approach to the art of the finish. On the Tasting Mat: - Iron Fish Distillery Bourbon Whiskey Finished in Maple Syrup Barrels (86 proof): A craft bourbon out of Thompsonville, Michigan, finished in barrels previously used to age maple syrup from a nearby family sugar bush farm. The nose opens with caramel green apple and buttery sweetness with virtually no ethanol heat. The palate is confectionary and sweet with a gentle warmth and a soft, hugging finish. Award-winning and approachable, this one shines as a warm-weather pour, especially over a large ice cube or alongside a glass of half-and-half iced tea. Retails around $50. *(00:02:11)* - Company Distilling Weated Bourbon Finished with Maple Wood Chunks (90 proof): From the distillery co-founded by former Jack Daniel's master distiller Jeff Arnett, this weated bourbon blends whiskey from three states using both column and pot stills, aged four to six years. Rather than using a maple syrup barrel, fully matured straight bourbon was finished by placing maple wood chunks directly into the whiskey to coax natural toasted wood character. The nose carries green apple, a hint of cinnamon toast, and a subtle forest smokiness. The palate is extraordinarily silky and smooth with very little impact up front, building to a light zip on the finish. A dangerously sessionable pour. Retails around $50. *(00:07:04)* - Green River Honey Finished Bourbon (92 proof): Distilled and aged in Owensboro, Kentucky, this four-year-old Green River straight bourbon was finished by adding a custom blend of locally sourced, seasonally selected raw unfiltered honey directly into the barrel, allowing the bourbon and honey to marry through natural barrel interaction. The result is a honey-colored, notably sweet whiskey with a confectionary nose and a smooth, very approachable palate that lends itself to mixing — a spiked Arnold Palmer or a light honey old fashioned being natural fits. Presented in distinctive hexagonal honeycomb-themed packaging. Retails at $24.99. *(00:13:31)* - Oak Lore Distilling Company Port Cask Finished Four Grain Bourbon (92 proof): From Oak Lore Distilling in North Carolina, this four-grain bourbon sourced from Southern Distilling in Statesville, NC and Kentucky partners including Bardstown/Green River receives an additional 12 to 18 months of maturation in freshly dumped domestic port wine barrels that previously held port for up to 18 years. The nose is dark and figgy with cherry and deep fruit. The palate opens with upfront sweetness before settling into a rich, heavy dark fruit finish reminiscent of well-aged port. A campfire evening sipper, particularly appealing to port lovers making the move toward bourbon. Retails at $79.95. *(00:21:48)* - Oak Lore Distilling Company Old Fashioned Finished Four Grain Bourbon (98 proof): The second of Oak Lore's Story Series entries, this four-grain bourbon finishes for an additional 18 months in barrels previously used to age Oak Lore's own old fashioned cocktail mixer. The result captures the essence of a classic old fashioned — bitters-forward aromatics with hints of orange, ginger, cardamom, and baking spice on the nose. The palate opens sweet and transitions into a bittery, cocktail-like finish that calls for nothing more than an ice cube and an orange garnish. Retails at $89.95. *(00:31:46)* Jim and Todd round out the episode with news about the freshly launched Bourbon Road website, which now hosts over 1,320 tasting notes, all 500-plus episodes, a searchable blog, and the all-new Roadie Bar — a members community complete with chat, event calendars, giveaways, and a 24/7 AI bartender named Cooper. The pair also tease an upcoming event at the Frankfurt Bourbon Society's Corner Rick House during the Bourbon on the Banks weekend on October 3rd. 494. Wheel Horse and Copper & Cask: Four Bottles That Punch Way Above Their Price

Jim Shannon and Todd Ritter welcome Stephen Corrigan — Barrel Master and Spirits Production Manager for Latitude Beverage LLC — for a four-bottle deep dive into two of the company's brands: Wheel Horse Whiskey and Copper and Cask Spirits. Stephen shares his winding path from organic farming and European viticulture to founding a DC craft distillery and ultimately landing at Latitude, where his focus is entirely on the art of blending and cask finishing. The conversation explores what it means to be a transparent non-distilling producer, the close relationship Latitude has built with Green River Distillery in Owensboro, Kentucky, and how aging barrels across wildly different climates — from the cold, damp Rhode Island coast to the sweltering Florida interior — coaxes remarkably distinct flavor profiles from the same base distillate. On the Tasting Mat: - Wheel Horse Barrel Master Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey (Batch 002): 113 proof, 5-year age statement, sourced from Green River Distillery (70% corn, 21% rye, 9% malted barley), blended from 14 barrels, non-chill filtered. Rich cherry cola on the nose, brown sugar and baking spice on the mid-palate, and a satisfying oak-driven finish with a full, coating mouthfeel. Retails for approximately $40. *(00:01:51)* - Wheel Horse Barrel Master Kentucky Straight Rye Whiskey (Batch 001): 120.2 proof, 5-year age statement, sourced from Green River Distillery (95% rye, 5% malted barley), blended from 11 barrels, non-chill filtered. Reportedly the first cask-strength Green River rye released commercially. Candied orange and dark fruit on the nose give way to a lively rye spice on the finish, with a notably viscous and oily texture. Retails for approximately $40. *(00:13:57)* - Copper and Cask Small Batch 16 Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey: 116 proof, 11-year age statement, sourced from MGP (60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley), blended from 24 barrels across two distinct lots laid down in September 2014, non-chill filtered. One lot delivers cocoa powder and austere oak depth; the other brings maraschino cherry, citrus, and a youthful vibrancy. Together they yield cream soda, fruitcake, and a ginger-tinged finish. Retails for approximately $84.99. *(00:25:54)* - Copper and Cask Sauternes Cask Finish Bourbon (Single Barrel, Influencer Pick): 119.8 proof, 8-year age statement, sourced from MGP (60% corn, 36% rye, 4% malted barley), finished approximately 16 months in a Sauternes barrel, non-chill filtered. Selected in collaboration with whiskey influencers Whiskey Fly and Bourbon Hunt. Deep mahogany color; grape must, raisin, plum, and fig on the nose; a viscous, almost tawny port-like texture on the palate with a dry rye-spice counterpoint on the finish. Retails for approximately $64.99–$69.99. *(00:39:15)* Beyond the bottles, Stephen opens up about the blending philosophy that guides every Latitude release — letting the whiskey dictate its own proof point, building toward a finish that lingers, and keeping price points honest so drinkers can pull a bottle off the shelf on any random Tuesday. He also teases the possibility of a future crossover product bridging the Wheel Horse and Copper and Cask lines, and confirms that Florida-aged barrels will be returning to the Copper and Cask single barrel program after a brief hiatus. Whether you're drawn to the accessible value of Wheel Horse or the premium craft of Copper and Cask, this episode makes a strong case that Rhode Island is quietly becoming one of the more interesting addresses in American whiskey. Summer 1936: Rainey Bethea, a young Black man, is tried for the rape and murder of an elderly white woman. The all-white, all-male jury takes just four and a half minutes to find him guilty. Bethea is hanged near the banks of the Ohio River in Owensboro, Kentucky, with more than twenty thousand white people in attendance. The crowd turns the violent spectacle of Bethea's hanging—the last documented public execution in the United States—into a brutal carnival. Bethea's story came to author Sonya Lea through her family, and it is through her family that she reckons with its truths. At her grandmother's funeral, Lea received an oral history recorded by a neighbor. In its pages, Lea, who is descended from white Kentuckians on both sides, discovered that two of the spectators at Bethea's execution were her grandparents, teenage newlyweds Sherrel and Frances Ralph. Lea's research would also divulge that she was related to the prosecuting attorney for the Commonwealth, the man considered most responsible for Bethea's hanging. American Bloodlines: Reckoning with Lynch Culture (University Press of Kentucky, 2025) combines memoir with reportage and cultural criticism to interrogate and complicate the traditional narrative about how lynch culture is created in families, communities, and institutions. The essays in this collection grapple with our complicity in these atrocities—including the agreement in our silences—and demonstrate how we, as descendants, might take responsibility and bring new scrutiny to ancestral and communal crimes. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. In this episode of Bigfoot Society, witness John Reiners—a registered RN and the author of Crouching Behemoth: Quadrupedal Sasquatch—shares one of the most detailed quadrupedal Bigfoot encounters ever recorded. On November 17, 2020, while driving toward Rough River Lake near Owensboro and Breckenridge County, Kentucky, John witnessed a massive buck enter the roadway, panting and distressed. Seconds later, he observed two large gold eyes shimmering from a ravine. A spider-crawling, gray-skinned quadrupedal Sasquatch emerged, stalking the deer before rising smoothly onto two legs and pursuing it at full speed.John's account also touches on regional Bigfoot activity tied to the Ohio River, Green River, Mammoth Cave system, and nearby Ohio County. Additional sightings discussed include incidents from Scotts Road in Indiana (1996) and the Pearl River Basin in Louisiana (2022)—all of which appear in his book. This is an essential listen for anyone interested in spider-crawl Bigfoot, predatory Sasquatch behavior, all-fours locomotion, and rare eyewitness encounters.Get your copy of John's book here: https://amzn.to/4a3pgA0 (Amazon affiliate link that helps support the podcast)

In this episode, I dive into the life of Mildred “Milly” Lucas, a woman often credited as the first female jailer in Kentucky—though her journey to that role was anything but straightforward. What begins as an exploration of early female jailers in the state becomes a gripping true story of violence and political upheaval. After the brutal murder of her husband, Daviess County Jailer William Lucas, during a racially motivated lynching in 1884, Mildred stepped in to run the jail. Her fight to hold the office—despite widespread gender bias, legal battles, personal tragedy, and even a jailbreak—reveals both the extraordinary challenges she faced and the rigid societal barriers of the time.Content Warning:This episode includes descriptions of a lynching and racially motivated violence. Graphic details are minimized but the events remain disturbing. Listener discretion is advised.Learn how William Lucas, a Confederate veteran turned jailer, moved his family to Owensboro and became widely respected for maintaining the courthouse square—despite constant dangers inside the jail walls.Hear the newspaper-reported account of Richard May, a young Black farmhand accused of assaulting a white woman—a claim that rapidly escalated into fear, rumor, and mob justice. In the aftermath of her husband's murder, Mildred—described by some as “delicate,” yet brave and unyielding—was appointed interim jailer. Despite winning the next election “by a large margin,” Mildred's eligibility was fiercely contested.Following her forced removal, Mildred's life was marked by sickness and profound loss. She died of consumption in 1898, after losing three of her children the same year. Newspapers remembered her as a “good woman” and the widow of a “martyred jailer.”This episode exposes:The racial terror that shaped Kentucky's pastThe challenges women faced in pursuing public officeThe human cost of mob violence and community silenceThe resilience of a woman who stepped into danger and leadership during crisisSelected newspaper accounts from the Owensboro Messenger and other 19th-century Kentucky publications. If you enjoyed this episode or want to share your thoughts:

Dolly Parton BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Dolly Parton has been at the center of several major headlines and social media conversations over the past few days, largely focused on her health and her ceaseless grip on both the entertainment world and public imagination. After canceling her scheduled Las Vegas show in September citing health challenges, concern about her wellbeing took over social media and prompted fans around the world to send messages of support. On October 24th, Dolly posted a cryptic but heartfelt video on Instagram, sharing a snippet of her 2011 song The Sacrifice with the message Grindstones and rhinestones have made up my life…But I've shined like a diamond through sacrifice. That post drew an outpouring of love from fans, who praised her resilience and storytelling, and reaffirmed their devotion in the comments. The rumors about Dolly's health hit a fever pitch when her sisters Freida and Stella Parton publicly asked for prayers, and an AI-generated photo of Dolly supposedly on her deathbed circulated widely, causing both panic and premature tributes. Dolly responded in classic fashion, posting I ain't dead yet and reassuring everyone she was just fine, directly addressing the absurdity of the AI image and calming her fans. Her team and close insiders, including a source speaking to Radar Online, have stated that while Dolly had to deal with kidney stones, her condition is not life-threatening and she's expected to make a full recovery, though some caution she should slow down to avoid future health risks. Reba McEntire, fellow country icon and friend, chimed in publicly to back Dolly up and joked about the wild AI rumors, stating both she and Dolly have no plans to retire any time soon.Despite health scares, Dolly's business affairs have been as lively as ever. Right Angle Entertainment and Paul T Couch announced the national tour of Dolly Parton's Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol, a major theatrical production filled with her signature songs and warmth. The tour opens November 15 in Owensboro, Kentucky and travels to over 20 cities from Nashville to Lexington. While Dolly will not appear physically in the show, her creative fingerprints are all over it, and cast announcements have drawn buzz in regional media and social platforms, spotlighting the multigenerational impact of her songwriting and the continual expansion of her brand. In quieter but classic Dolly news, her ghost stories from early Nashville days have resurfaced, reminding everyone not only of her talent but also her ability to enchant beyond music—whether it's a haunted faucet or Southern family lore. Through all the headlines, speculation, and viral moments, Dolly Parton has again proved she is not only very much alive, but remains an unstoppable force—grounded in humor, hard work, and heart.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOtaThis content was created in partnership and with the help of Artificial Intelligence AI

On this first episode of our Future Planning Series, We talk about the impact of community support, innovative programs, and how her organization transforms lives of individuals with intellectual disabilities. Don't miss Amanda's heartfelt stories and empowering message. Let's get started! Bio: Amanda Owen is a dynamic storyteller, advocate, and changemaker. As an author, speaker, podcaster, and nonprofit founder, she has dedicated her life to championing individuals with disabilities. Inspired by her older brother Nick, one of the first in the world diagnosed with a rare chromosomal disability, Amanda's journey into advocacy began at home. This unique experience ignited her passion for inclusion and advocacy from a young age. Determined to make a difference, Amanda became a special education teacher but soon realized her vision for empowering families extended beyond the classroom. Over 12 years ago, she made the bold decision to leave teaching and launch Puzzle Pieces, a Kentucky-based nonprofit that provides life-changing services to individuals with disabilities. From residential living to vocational training, supported employment, and the region's only targeted autism programming, Amanda's organization now serves over 400 clients with the support of a dedicated team of 100+ staff members and a $6 million operating budget. Amanda's work has set a new standard for disability services both statewide and nationally. She was appointed by the Kentucky Governor to the Employment First Council and was recognized as a 40 Under 40 influential leader in her community. As a sought-after speaker, she shares her unique sibling perspective and insights on advocacy with audiences across the country. Amanda's recently released memoir, "Rarely Different," offers a deeply personal look into her life as a special needs sibling, providing a perspective that resonates with many families navigating similar challenges. Her life's mission is clear: to ensure people with disabilities are not just included, but celebrated within their communities. Amanda's infectious energy and relentless optimism inspire everyone around her to dream big, work hard, and embrace the lessons that come with failure. Gary Jarboe [00:00:00]: That's why I keep coming back. This is my 10th time to come back as a P. Well, and I. Jennifer [00:00:04]: Think that, Gary, I hope you hear this. In all sincerity, that's why we wanted to ask you these questions for the podcast, because I think it's like, it's such a gift that you give here. And I'm like, I know other people want to hear that in terms of your experience and sharing it. Ashlee [00:00:20]: I also think it helps end the stigma, too. Like, I think this is exactly what we need is for people in your position to be like, open up. It is okay to go get that help. There is not a time limit on this either. Right. Like, you are. You are being open and honest. And we're so grateful that you're on here saying, like, I am an older gentleman, and yet I'm making progress still in my life because I've decided to go open up to someone about what I've been through and what I've seen. Jennifer [00:00:51]: Welcome back to the podcast. I'm Jennifer. Ashlee [00:00:53]: And I'm Ashlee. And you know what, Jennifer, you get to say what we have, who we have today. Jennifer [00:00:58]: Well, as always, we have a very special guest with us today, and I'm so excited that he is willing to be here and share. So I'm just going to give it to you. You want to tell the listeners who you are and a little bit about yourself. Gary Jarboe [00:01:09]: My name is Gary Jarvo. I'm a retired sergeant with the Owensboro, Kentucky Police Department. My background when. When I was 18 years old, I joined the Marine Corps in 1969, which was, you know, people would say that's pretty crazy thing to do in the middle of the Vietnam War. But I enlisted for four years and spent four years on transport airplanes as flight crew before I got out. When I got back from overseas, I married my high school sweetheart, and we've been married this month for 53 years. Jennifer [00:01:39]: Congratulations. Gary Jarboe [00:01:41]: We have two sons and two grown sons and three grandsons who we love to go see. Ashlee [00:01:48]: Karen is outnumbered. Gary Jarboe [00:01:49]: Yes, definitely. In 1980, I was hired by the Owensboro Police department and spent 21 years there. Ashlee [00:01:59]: Wow. Gary Jarboe [00:02:00]: Retired after I'd had all the fun I could stand and all the fun that they could stand, and worked for another company for 13 years, and we've both been retired completely for the last 10. Jennifer [00:02:12]: Wonderful. I appreciate you sharing that extensive resume, and I want to thank you for your service. Ashlee [00:02:17]: Yes. Jennifer [00:02:17]: I have very important to say. You know, one thing I really appreciate about you, Gary, is that you're always open about your experience and saying you know, Ashlee and I are mental health professionals and saying, where was this 30 years ago? So can you talk a little bit about the difference of today in terms of just us using the word mental health and the experience of when you were first on the department in your career and what mental health was like in terms of that experience? Gary Jarboe [00:02:48]: Yeah. My only experience with any mental health professional until I came to PCIS was an interview I had when I was hired. And it was. I don't know how I can put this delicately. Jennifer [00:03:03]: You don't have to. Gary Jarboe [00:03:04]: But none of us were impressed with the practitioner that we talked to. Jennifer [00:03:08]: I understand that is delicate. Gary Jarboe [00:03:11]: And throughout my career, we had an employee assistance program like you're required to have. No one that I know of would have ever called employee assistance because we knew it was a direct line to the chief and. Or city hall. And we instinctively have a distrust of what we don't understand. And we have all heard horror stories of people's bad experiences with mental health professionals, and that's with any. Any occupation. But cops are control freaks. They don't want to give up control to anybody. Gary Jarboe [00:03:50]: And to. And you don't bear your soul to anybody. And that's. And that's a problem for us. And I'll be honest, it was for me and dealing with. With my family, you know, we don't even talk way too often. We don't talk to our families about things and. Sure. Gary Jarboe [00:04:07]: Not going to talk to some stranger. Jennifer [00:04:09]: Exactly. Ashlee [00:04:10]: Ex. Jennifer [00:04:11]: I appreciate you sharing that experience that you had, and I'm gonna dig a little bit deeper. You know, I appreciate you sharing your experience with the military, and I was very honored to get to work with service members and their families. And I do believe that the military is working hard to destigmatize mental health. But being in the Marine Corps, being at war, sometimes I see that experience of veterans that become police officers that it's so ingrained of. You're a soldier. Suck it up. I didn't know if that was a reinforcer or that made things different for you. Gary Jarboe [00:04:53]: You know, I really don't know. And I'll have to be honest. I spent four years in the Marine Corps, and I spent a little time in Vietnam, but I only saw their ice paddies from altitude. I was flying. I did not spend a year in Vietnam. We would run detachments in country and. And I was over there at the end of the Marine Corps involvement in Vietnam, so I wasn't even in there the entire time. But it's. Gary Jarboe [00:05:17]: You go to parris island in 1969. They tell you you're only there for one thing. Ashlee [00:05:24]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:05:24]: And you know, they told us we were all going to Vietnam, which at that stage of the war I understand very few of the people I went to boot camp with actually winning country. But it's the attitude that they teach you. Ashlee [00:05:36]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:05:37]: And, and it's the hard headed attitude. And, and I'll be honest with you, that hard headed attitude actually probably saved me. Jennifer [00:05:44]: Oh absolutely. Gary Jarboe [00:05:45]: Many years later when I had, when I was hit by a car and, and I was off work two years and my wife has told people that he probably couldn't have come back if he hadn't gotten hard headed at Parris Island. Ashlee [00:05:58]: Wow. Gary Jarboe [00:05:58]: Because I wasn't going to stay down. Jennifer [00:06:00]: That sounds like a Marine Corps. Yeah. Really hard at it. Ashlee [00:06:04]: Yeah, absolutely. And, and when I hear you talking about that too, like, I can't help but think like how much of that do you think translated to your home life? Like way too much. Way too much. Yeah. So it's, it's hard. Right. It's hard to get in that mindset and then just change it. I don't even know if that's possible for a lot of our first responders or for people who like you like a Marine. Ashlee [00:06:24]: Right. Like, yeah. And, but yet it's so beneficial on one side because we like you just said like hard headed and you got through something so big in your life and then yet it can be very impactful on the other side of things too. Did you start to notice that at all? It kind of going deep here with your family but like how that translated to your family? A little bit. Gary Jarboe [00:06:45]: Not until later. Ashlee [00:06:46]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:06:46]: You know, you don't show vulnerability. Ashlee [00:06:49]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:06:50]: You can't be vulnerable. You know, you've got to walk into the bar fight, necessarily walk in by yourself. But I mean you wait in the middle of it. And when I was a, when I was a rookie police officer, it was, I always had this thing in my mind that, you know, how will I react when I get to my, my first fight? Because I was little skinny guy. I've gained the number of pounds now. But yeah, I was, I was a pretty thin guy, barely met the minimum weight limits to get into, into the Marine Corps. Ashlee [00:07:23]: Oh wow. Gary Jarboe [00:07:24]: And, and until I had my first knock down drag out on the street, I had that, that doubt in my mind and it happened to be with my training officer several months after I'd gotten out by myself. And you know, he made the comment that you've done good rookie and that that was What I needed, and that's what I did the rest of the time I was in. Yeah, but yet you don't have that vulnerability. And I didn't. I didn't tell a lot of things at home because I didn't want to burden her. And she had never been exposed to the kind of life that I was seeing every day. I mean, her family, there was. There was no violence. Gary Jarboe [00:08:07]: There was no alcoholism. I mean, that she'd never seen domestic violence. And, you know, she used to say that she had heard all the stories, but what she heard was the stories that we would joke about when we get together. Jennifer [00:08:22]: The PG stories. Gary Jarboe [00:08:23]: Yeah. She didn't hear about the really bad ones, the ones where I was scared half to death and, you know, because you just don't burden your family with that. Jennifer [00:08:31]: Right. And I think it's that thing that is such a. A tightrope to. To walk, because I think it is. I love my family. I would not want. Ashlee [00:08:40]: Yeah. Jennifer [00:08:41]: To burden them. I don't want to upset them. I want to. You know, I'm protecting all these people in my community. Of course I want to protect my family. And yet that sometimes can be a misstep. Gary Jarboe [00:08:54]: Oh, we. We paid a price for it, really. And I've said, you know, when I come to. To the PC, is that. Where was this 35 years ago? It would have been a whole lot easier on my whole family and on me had I been able to. To do what I've. I've done since I've been here. Ashlee [00:09:11]: Yeah. Ashlee [00:09:12]: Do you feel like your connection then to your wife has grown stronger? Gary Jarboe [00:09:15]: Oh, definitely, definitely. And after we came here, we talked about things, and she heard about things that she had never heard about in all the years since I got on the department. Ashlee [00:09:27]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:09:27]: And even other things that we. We have better communication now than we had before. Ashlee [00:09:33]: And I'm going to take a second here to tell our listeners a little bit. Like, we won't go into detail. Details about the title or anything of the program, but it is a mental health program that we met Gary at, that they get to come and it's for first responders, and they get to come and talk about some of these intense, critical incidences that they've been through and honestly open up and get the help from mental health professionals and peers who have been through it as well and get to talk with their families. Wives are included. Spouses of any kind are included. And so I just want to put it out there because we're referencing it so much of, like, I mean, I think what's really powerful is that you were, you were retired into secondary. Gary Jarboe [00:10:09]: Yeah, I've been retired 21 years before I came. Ashlee [00:10:12]: Oh, wow. Ashlee [00:10:13]: Wow. Gary Jarboe [00:10:13]: Because it didn't exist at all while I was working. Jennifer [00:10:16]: Right. Ashlee [00:10:16]: Like the mental health world didn't. But is it okay if I ask and if this is too much, let us know? Like what, what made you decide finally to say, hey, I'm. I got stuff I gotta work on and I'm gonna go do that even after the career. Gary Jarboe [00:10:29]: Well, a couple of friends of mine that I had worked with and had retired and got back into it, just in conversation, told me about PC. I'd never heard of it until a little over two years ago. Ashlee [00:10:40]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:10:41]: And they were telling me about it and they both were raving about it. Said it's great, you need to, you need to go. Ashlee [00:10:46]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:10:47]: So I did a little research and looked at it. I looked online. I thought I knew I had some demons hanging around. Ashlee [00:10:53]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:10:54]: And I sat down with, with Karen and I said, would you go to this with me? And she said, yeah. So got online and got myself into it. And I'll be honest with you, on Monday I was trying to figure out a way that I could run. Jennifer [00:11:10]: Understandably run. Ashlee [00:11:12]: Yep. Gary Jarboe [00:11:13]: And on Wednesday, driving home, I was saying, where was this 35 years ago? Jennifer [00:11:18]: You know, I hate to say this, but I think you're a little bit of an outlier to know that you've been retired. Ashlee and I talk a lot about the impact of the career. And then retirement can be a really dangerous place sometimes. Time for officers. Do you care to share a little bit like what helps? I mean, you said, you know, I had these, these demons and being open. But unfortunately people that retire from a first responder career, that can be some hard times. And if you can share a little bit like what was helpful for you in terms of. Or what has been helpful for you in terms of retirement. Gary Jarboe [00:11:53]: Well, I came in here with, with one thing that had, had bothered me and had bothered me for years. And I talked about it when I was here. And then I realized that that was just one of many. I have had a. Hell, I've lost count. Six, seven follow up sessions. Ashlee [00:12:12]: Yeah. Gary Jarboe [00:12:12]: With an MHP since then. You know, I, I call Hannah my savior, but it's. And some of it goes back to my childhood. But there were things that, that had really bothered me. I spent five years, about 9

Dale Earnhardt Jr. sits down with 1994 Busch Series champion David Green to learn why he turned down a ride from his dad, what it was like replacing Ricky Hendrick, and how he navigated racing against his two brothers. After growing up in Owensboro, Kentucky and venturing into kart racing with his brothers David and (former DJD guest) Jeff, David made the transition into late model racing and found success in the NASCAR All-American Challenge Series. His relationships with Wayne Day, Mike Alexander and Bobby Labonte helped usher him into the NASCAR garage, initially building cars and making one-off starts in the Busch Series. But once Bobby Labonte was promoted to the Cup Series and vacated his family-owned ride, David was hired full-time and would lead the team to the 1994 Busch Series championship.David fills Dale in on an encounter he had with Dale Sr. where he was approached to replace his brother Jeff in the #3 DEI Busch car. He also reflects on his time spent driving for Hendrick Motorsports, replacing Ricky Hendrick when he made the decision to step away from racing in 2002. Pipe Dreams Podcast is back for Episode 29 with Jake Lewis, a racer who grew up in the racing hotbed of Owensboro, Kentucky—right alongside the Hayden family—and lived the sport from day one. He shares what it was like achieving his dream so young and now, finding his love for the sport again in the MotoAmerica SuperSport, Hooligan and Bagger class.Jake gets real about career highs and lows, what drives him to keep racing, and how he's stayed grounded through it all.Follow @pipedreams_pod on social media!____________________________________________________________________________________Please support our partners: Law Tigers Motorcycle Attorney's: If you ever find yourself in an incident that may or may not require legal representation please call 1-800-Law-Tigers.- No recovery, no fee for personal injury claims, and no expenses unless there is a recovery.- Fees calculated as a percentage of the gross recovery.- FREE representation for motorcycle property damage claims- FREE advice on all motorcycle matters For more info visit https://lawtigers.com/____________________________________________________________________________________Yuasa Battery: Setting the standard for powersports batteries since 1979.
