Jamison Isaak has been releasing music as @teendaze since 2010. Over the past 13 years, his music has navigated a multitude of different sounds, and his 2021 LP Interior landed him the JUNO Award for Electronic Album of the Year. This year, he released 4 EPs, his most recent, Quiet City, on his newly launched label, Easy Listening Recordings. He's also been busy DJing across North America in the past few years, and recently started a residency on Dublab. We're very much looking forward to welcoming him into the SB guest mix series with a lovely little opener for 2024! "Ever since things began opening up in 2021, I decided I only wanted to DJ, and not perform live any more. I've found DJing to be so much more satisfying! One of my favourite parties in recent years was just a few weeks ago at Public Record in New York City, and I wanted to try and bring some of the same energy from that night to this mix. Ease into things gently, and end things with some proper 2 AM party music." - Teen Daze https://soundcloud.com/teendaze Heart Sphere - E.R. Jamison Isaak is a musician. You may know him by his stage name, Teen Daze, a Canadian electronic act from Vancouver. I met Jamison at Oliver Shaw's Friend Editions storefront for the release of Chris Black's collaborative zine with Friend Editions just before him and friend and guest of the show, Jason Stewart of How Long Gone had their live show at Webster Hall. Jamison played Black Flamingo and Public Records that weekend, two of my favorite clubs and bars I frequently haunt in Brooklyn. Jamison started off the year strong by winning best electronic album of the year at the Juno Awards for his album, Interior. We all have Teen Daze saved in our playlists. I know I do. Jamison Isaak aka Teen Daze is an electronic musician who I personally have been a fan of since 2010. He's more than a musician, though. Much more...He's also a husband and a father. He's a nature lover. Twitter user. A resident of British Columbia. Friend. We got pretty deep into talking about DQ Blizzard's in this episode. I was craving one after our chat and then drove to Dairy Queen last Wednesday. So good. Something crazy happened, though—and feel free to sound off in the comments or on Twitter if you've ever had a similar experience—halfway through my blizzard, I noticed the cookie bits were dissipating, and then, they disappeared altogether. The entire bottom half of the Blizzard was just plain vanilla ice cream. I messaged Jamison about it and he knew what I was talking about. He said the same thing had happened to him. I checked out Reddit and someone on there said it was most likely "laziness on the part of the employees." *Shouts out to my girlfriend Chelsea Nguyen who comes through with a mind-bending story for the intro on this episode* Other topics discussed in this episode: Oreo's CiRCA nightclub The first EP by Washed Out Chilliwack Hypnosis Emo Marriage PureVolume Links: Teen Daze Teen Daze Twitter
As you grow older, your musical taste changes and evolves and I for one, welcome it. You don't have to listen to aggressive music all day, every day. Of course, you don't need me to tell you that but the past few years I have gotten really into dreamy soundscapes and our guest this week creates those in spades. His name is Jamison Isaak and plays under the moniker Teen Daze. I had a sneaking suspicion that he had a connection to punk/hardcore/DIY and boy, was I right. We get in deep with his life in rural Canada, the importance of Much Music, melodic hardcore and so much more. Trust me, you'll enjoy this convo even if you aren't familiar with his music. Regulation as neither bogeyman nor panacea, but a way of protecting out the right spaces for genuine competition to emerge. Show Notes Back in September, we recorded this episode live, both of us in person, at Pikes Peak Brewing Company in Monument, Colorado—as Stephen was out visiting Chris and just hanging out for a weekend. We talk a bit about the history of the beer industry in the 20th and 21st century, with an eye to the way that government intervention can variously make things much worse or much better, when it’s tailored just right. …and then we failed to publish it for almost exactly 2 months, because Chris ended up with a horrible case of burnout.
