Here we go with the start of a new month and with it a new mix of fresh new sounds.I actually ran out of new tunes, it was a well discussed topic in the chatroom as to whether I had enough. So I decided to end the mix with two of my own tracks, Can't Play which was my second track made and my latest one, Beautiful Persons.I was also so happy to be able to play a track I melted in 1998 in my attic room in Nottingham. I got excited when Defected bought Strictly Rhythm's back catalogue but The Believers, Heather Wildman - Gotta Keep Holding On wasn't released. Imagine my surprise when it suddenly shows up in Traxsource!Locking in the guest DJ for this month, Tony Garcia of Rotary Disco fame. He produced the excellent remake or Nights Over Egypt - Over Pyramids that appeared in last months mix. One of the nicest guys in the scene, I can't to have him on.For those of you in Sydney you can catch me next on Feb 16th playing for Soul Of Sydney who are doing a Frankie Knuckles tribute event. Looking forward to spinning vinyl from across the decades for a very appreciative older crowd. Finally - it was nice to be able to pay respects to the late, great Michael Procter. Another of house musics great male vocalists. East Coast house legend Junior Sanchez started mixing records at 11, by age 15 he was playing in the Shampoo Room at Limelight and starting to make his first productions with help from the fly titties guy. You might know Junior from his releases on Strictly Rhythm, Defected and Relief, his trio S-Men with Roger and DJ Sneak, the remixes he's produced for Madonna, The Faint and Fcukers or as the stunning blonde in Daft Punk's "Burnin'" video. Hear his stories about NYC/NY in the late '80s and early '90s, raving at NASA and Sound Factory Bar, getting up with Constipated Monkeys, having bff adventures with Armand Van Helden and dancing on The Grind, plus tales of all the amazing records that have influenced him along the way. 2024 was wild; it ended with me dropping a my main main hard drive on the floor and potentially ruining it forever, I have a backup but don't even want to check how long ago that backup was ! This just forces me to play more records, and it's something I've been meaning to do. I preveiw a "secret" project I've been working on a lil snipet of a 4 hour set I want to share at some point honouring those that paved the way for us today. It's called Strictly Rhythm (yes that Strictly Rhythm) and a few more things here and there you know how we do with some Aftercare. Maximalist house from the sibling duo at the forefront of Berlin's new wave. Berlin is built on dance music. But of the many DJs who live, work and play there, few represent the evolution in the city's club culture like Tania and Dominik Humeres-Correa, AKA S-candalo. If the city was once governed by the tyranny of minimal, the post-pandemic era has cemented its reputation as the spot for "more-is-more" club soundtracks. It's still house and techno, but the chords are big, the drums are big and the basslines are even bigger. Nowadays, S-candalo are firm favourites at hotspots across the German capital, from Panorama Bar to Multisex and Radiant Love (not forgetting La Noche, their own burgeoning party). The duo find rich inspiration in '90s-era Latin house, a sound that takes New York house and incorporates rolling percussion from Latin genres such as samba, popularised on labels like Cutting Records and Strictly Rhythm (there's not one but two records from the latter in this mix). RA.956 fittingly lands at the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month in the US (more on that to come) and it's a resolutely fun affair. The duo's RA Podcast has got drive, sultry vocals and enough bounce to make you want to keep dancing way beyond the 90-minutes, marrying percussion-heavy house and ballroom with trance-inflected Eurodance from the '90s and early 2000s. (Oh, and a Shakira moment.) Genres aside, the duo's musical raison d'etre is pleasure. Perhaps the real scandal here is how it took us so long to get them on the series. @s-candalo @thc_dj @dhc_bln Read more at ra.co/podcast/956
Tracklist on https://slothboogie.com/ Bristol-based producer Sean McCabe has amassed an impressive discography, delivering inspired releases and reworks for the likes of Local Talk, Z Records, Strictly Rhythm, Room Control, Tribe, Quantize and his own label Good Vibrations Music. Releasing his first tracks in 2003, he has fine-tuned a trademark sound that is effortlessly soulful and definitely house. A quick listen to any of his productions or DJ sets will confirm this emotion-rich aesthetic. Constantly learning and evolving, taking his sound in different directions, McCabe admits to a love of vintage synthesizers – picked up from listening to classic New York boogie and ‘80s soul. "I always like to play a mix of styles in a set to keep it interesting and represent the different styles that I like. I selected about 50 tracks that I felt like playing, to give me options, some recently released and some forthcoming. I made up the structure as I went along based on how I felt in the moment. It starts with a blend of soulful songs and funky/jazzy grooves, then delves into deeper driving tracks to build some anticipation, like a crescendo of some sort, then relieve the tension with music that has a resolving feel to it and end with some broken beat and jazzy ear candy. I think this is typical of how I try to programme my mixes. Like a very long chord progression or song structure; set mood, build tension, resolve, home, then repeat. I also like to make sure I don't play too many vocals or dubs/instrumentals in a row. So I try to keep it varied in that respect too." - https://soundcloud.com/seanmccabe

This past February, Tesfa Williams released his debut album—over 20 years into his career. Raves Of Future Past distilled decades of experience on London dance floors into a potent and powerful blend of grime, house, rave and techno. Made with an Elektron Digitakt to imitate the rough textures of early '00s UK dance music, the LP is an anachronistic history lesson that throws everything in a blender, imagining what gqom might sound like as an Eski track and giving new life to the short-lived "sublow" sound Williams helped invent with classic tracks like "Invasion," released under his earlier alias DJ Dread D. Since the sublow days, however, Williams has become a torchbearer for UK house music and African diasporic sounds like Afro house and gqom in London. He's put out soulful hits like "Heartbeat"—recently reissued by Local Action—and released a steady stream of dance records for PMR and Strictly Rhythm. He's what you might call a jack of all trades, except for that he's actually a master of them all. His RA Podcast charts his musical journey in reverse chronological order, starting with smooth, African-influenced sounds and winding through grime and dubstep, eventually landing at jungle. He threads a needle through diverse genres (and eras), and posits that the traditional UK hardcore continuum is a bigger spectrum than you might think, with gqom's heave and amapiano's log drum equally important in the musical equation. It's nearly two hours of UK dance music past and present, from a DJ who has lived it all. @twilliamsmusic Read more at https://ra.co/podcast/935
From Your Grave » signé Phuture
D'abord avec « The Warning »

Over the past 13 years, his music has navigated a multitude of different sounds, and his 2021 LP Interior landed him the JUNO Award for Electronic Album of the Year. This year, he released 4 EPs, his most recent, Quiet City, on his newly launched label, Easy Listening Recordings. He's also been busy DJing across North America in the past few years, and recently started a residency on Dublab. We're very much looking forward to welcoming him into the SB guest mix series with a lovely little opener for 2024! "Ever since things began opening up in 2021, I decided I only wanted to DJ, and not perform live any more. I've found DJing to be so much more satisfying! One of my favourite parties in recent years was just a few weeks ago at Public Record in New York City, and I wanted to try and bring some of the same energy from that night to this mix. JPB & SDDP throwing around some club sounds unabashedly through acid, Florida breaks, club breaks, Jersey stuff, Chicago stuff, definitely NY stuff, the list is lengthy. We end our first season with Rob Warner: a man about town since the 90s who's DJd at all the major venues and festivals, and does a sterling job of fighting for the scene at political level. As underground promoters, we certainly know how difficult it is to make the case for what we do to the local authorities, so we thought it'd be good to speak to someone who knows how to do it. How can we change archaic licensing laws? How can underground promoters get funding? Why are strip clubs given longer licenses than DJ-led venues? etc. etc.Rob became an obsessive record collector when he discovered the US sounds of Murk and Strictly Rhythm while in Japan. When he came back to Auckland, he would go religiously to Simon Grigg's BPM Records and feast on the latest underground house from the US and Europe. This eventually led to him playing at one of the most legendary venues in Auckland, The Box, and being the NZ tour DJ for Global Underground. He's been a constant on the scene ever since, fighting the good fight for underground music and club culture. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
Masters At Work, Todd Terry, David Morales, Murk, Blaze,Basement Boys, 重要厂牌有 Strictly Rhythm, Nervous, 8ball, irma, 重要人物 DJ Larry Levan,DJ Tony Humphries, Wayne Gardiner (aka Logic aka Classic Man), 特点是低频过滤的 organ;被认为是 UK Garage 教父的 Grant Nelson 于 1993 年成立厂牌 Nice ‘n' Ripe,是最早在英国开始制作 Garage House 的DJ 之一,他加入英国舞曲特有的 breakbeat ,突出鼓和低音部分,UKG 开始形成,还有一位新泽西 DJ Todd Edwards 在英国也是重要先驱;1996 年左右开始出现 Speed Garage,英国的低音特色影响更加明显,Garage 在俱乐部场景中不再小众,以白标唱片为载体的 UKG 开始出现在主流电台;我最爱的 UKG 时期,2000 年代左右的 2 Step 更加 R&B,在全球范围内产生影响至今,我们最爱的女孩团体 Mis-Teeq 贡献出两张元素丰富的佳作;千禧年的美国 R&B 也有很多 2 Step 元素,同时期 UKG 对澳大利亚和日本也有巨大影响,老林推荐的 m-flo “Expo Expo”(2001) 是非常典型的 UKG 2 Step,同时还有独特的 J-pop 风格;2 Step 开始加上MC 的 rhyme ,重要代表是 So Solid Crew,在主流 UK chart 上成绩亮眼;2000 初 Grime 开始形成, 相比 UKG+MC的形式,Grime的出现是独树一帜的,再次表达对 Dizzee Rascal 的崇拜;UKG 持续影响产生的 Dubstep,是最容易被误解的一种风格,与 Grime 平行发展,推荐厂牌 Tempa Recordings,代表音乐人 Digital Mystikz, Burial;2000s 后期出现了一种新的类型 UK Funky ,融合了非洲节奏,拉丁音乐,加勒比音乐元素,但这个解释对于我们来说仍然比较模糊,所以我们反推定义这种风格主要特征是,既不是 Grime 也不是蹬腿儿 2 Step,有 reggaeton 且更偏 house;2020 开始,2 Step 的回潮或许能为当下音乐趋势带来新的思路,再次回顾千禧年代的流行乐,我们需要给予UKG 更多的关注和赞美,真是个好时代,我爱千禧年。Playlist:Sweet Female Attitude – “Flowers”Logic – “The Warning (Inner Mix) “Grant Nelson – “Loosen Up (Dirty Dub Mix)”Mis-Teeq – “That Type of Girl”m-flo – “come again”So Solid Crew – “They Don't Know”Digital Mystikz – “Anti War Dub”Kyla – “Do you Mind” (Crazy Cousinz Remix)Artful Dodger – “Movin Too Fast”老林的UKG歌单 必读文章:UK Garage History & Family Tree: 20 Years of UKG! by: Lexis & Dr.LoveNice ‘N' Ripe: The rise and fall of the legendary UK garage label推荐 YouTube 频道: BearingUKBoiler Room UKG 特别专题 给主播写信:sonicelsa@gmail.comNewsletter & 播客订阅 hidesssss.substack.com This is a public episode. Video version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=03N5Bd9FunM Welcome back to another episode of the Rave Room Podcast. In this episode I sat down with 2 absolute legends. We spoke about how they enjoyed their Basscoast festival experience, their music and so much more. Ardalan Enamored first by traditional Iranian music and classic jazz and rock, Ardalan's taste began to transform with his childhood years spent moving back and forth from Iran and California. “Mr. Spock.” Call it beginner's luck, or more likely, a sign of what was to come–in2010, Ardalan shared one of his earliest studio explorations with Justin Martin, which became the foundation for the breakout hit. “Mr. Spock,” in its bizarre and booty-shaking glory, has been accredited as one of the “tracks that made Dirtybird famous,” helping to define the label's now darling reputation as a trusted source of ridiculous, off-the-wall dance floor bangers. Since, he continued to translate his deep-rooted connection to the dance floor in the studio with remixes on Toy Tonics, Play It Down, Yoshitoshi, and Dirtybird. T Williams West London's T.Williams is one of those people, having accomplished a full sweep of merited recognition over the years. Emerging onto the house scene in 2010, T.Williams instantly marked himself as a breakthrough artist with a difference; his unique take on house music turning heads. Far from a newcomer, his path as a musical artist started in the grime scene as Dread.D. Signed at the tender age of 17 with grime anthem Invasion on Jon E Cash's Black Ops label, Williams went on to have mass success in the grime and bass world selling thousands of singles worldwide. After a five-year reign, Williams found himself veering towards the world of house music. releasing solo works on his imprint Local Action and Pattern with remixes for Maya Jane Coles, Ben Westbeech and Skream. The end of 2011 saw Williams nominated for ‘Best Breakthrough DJ' by DJ Mag, ‘DJ Stars of 2012' by Time Out and featured in The Guardian. Two relationships came to the forefront in 2012 that propelled Williams to greater heights. The first was his weekly show on legendary London station, Rinse FM and the second, Williams' relationship with label PMR through his remix of Javeon McCarthy's ‘Lost Time'. The remix was named Record of the Week by BBC Radio 1 and supported by tastemakers Annie Mac and Fearne Cotton. From here T. signed to the label exclusively releasing his debut EP for the label in September 2012, and in the process receiving further support from BBC Radio 1. Further remixes of Mikky Ekko, Wretch 32 and Lianne La Havas followed suit, as well as his biggest to date - Disclosure's ‘Latch'. Powering dancefloors across the globe. Gaining his own monthly residency show with BBC Radio 1, 2013 ended with T. having played over 100 shows across four continents. 2017 marked the launch and release of the first collaborative EP with UK producer Julio Bashmore, via their joint independent Conch Records, a label aiming to push out more underground cross-genre music with heavy rotation from the likes of Moxie and Shy One. With an ever-expanding global tour schedule and further solo releases on the legendary NYC house label Strictly Rhythm turning heads, T.'s upward trajectory has never showed signs of slowing down. Using his technical prowess as a musician to educate the next generation of rising stars at London's respected Point Blank Music School has cemented his status as one of the UK music scene's key players. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us." Three New York visionaries discuss the city's '90s heyday. '90s nightlife in New York conjures images of Party Monster, jacking disco house and a rotating cast of mega clubs that saw thousands of revellers pass through their doors each weekend. From Limelight and Sound Factory to Palladium and countless others, clubbing was hitting its stride in New York, while producers like Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones and Damon Wild were producing game-changing 12-inches. But it was also the beginning of a decline, catalysed by the rollout of Mayor Rudy Giuliani's discriminatory policies that slowly gutted the club scene and the communities that called it home. To honour Resident Advisor's partnership with Wire Festival in Brooklyn this weekend, we're revisiting a panel recorded at our 24/7 party at Nowadays in 2018. We tasked the beloved Brooklyn fanzine Love Injection with presenting discussions covering five decades of dance music history. In this panel, Strictly Rhythm cofounder Gladys Pizarro, DJ and producer Lenny Dee and drag superstar and vogue performer Kevin Aviance spoke with journalist (and former RA staffer) Max Pearl about the rise and fall of the city's club scene during its golden decade. They also discussed how the city was sequestered, forcing many artists at the vanguard of '90s-era techno to make music and throw their own parties as the scene grew and shifted beneath the weight of city-wide reforms. "We were doing parties in Staten Island that were completely packed; Manhattan didn't want anything to do with us," said Lenny D. "So when we were doing it, we were making parties out in Brooklyn. A lot of music at that time was made here in Brooklyn—Joey Beltram, Frankie Bones, Tommy Musto, Damon Wild. So we had this scene where we're making great music, but no one's letting us play, so we're just going to do it ourselves." Listen to the episode in full.

"The mix starts off on the disco side of what I play and moves into house territory. It's a selection of tracks I'm really feeling and playing and includes some of my recent productions. There are also a couple of exclusives forthcoming on some of the labels I look after such as Big Love, Glitterbox and Faith here at Defected HQ. Hope you enjoy!" Seamus Haji's experience is all part of the mix. He has been involved in nearly all aspects of the Music Business from working in London's most influential dance music record shops for 10 years to A&R'ing for Slip'n'Slide Records, Defected Records and Strictly Rhythm to interviewing and reviewing for seminal Dance Music publications such as Muzik Magazine, DMC Update, DJ Mag, Touch and Echoes and of course, de rigueur stints on pirate radio Girls FM being the main on in the 90's. Since 2002 he has also been at the helm of his own much-respected house music label, Big Love (also including sister imprints Big Love Trax and Soul Love) for which he has either A&R'd, produced, remixed (or all three) nearly 400 hundred singles and mixed over 20 compilations. The man's knowledge knows no bounds, and he exemplifies that here for us in the mix.
Tyler Stone's Exclusive TDJS Mix presented by The DJ Sessions 8/17/22 About Tyler Stone - Tyler Stone is a producer/remixer, DJ and vocalist who has built her career as one of the first female house music producers, and has achieved several top ten Billboard Dance hits with her distinctive style rooted in deep house, disco, and downtempo. After receiving a degree in Jazz from Cornish College of the Arts, Tyler relocated to San Francisco to join the legendary Third Floor Productions where she cut her teeth under the tutelage of the masterful DJ EFX, and began showcasing her talents with some of Dance and Pop music's finest artists. This lead to a string of releases and remixes under the name “Ms T” on numerous dance labels such as Strictly Rhythm, Eightball, and Henry Street, with name acts including Armand Van Helden, Robin S, Crystal Waters and Kimara Lovelace as well as N'SYNC. As an integral part of the 90's San Francisco dance music scene, Tyler went on to open her own studio, Ms T Productions, and became the “go to” engineer within the house music community, working alongside such producers as Miguel Migs and Grammy nominated Jay-J and Chris Lum. Without skipping a beat, Tyler continues to push the envelope as a producer, lending her sophisticated programming to remixes and collaborations on reputable labels including Nervous and Aventura. Her tracks continue to chart, and receive regular features and playlist adds. Channeling the disco, funk and soul of her youth, and the house music of the early 90's, Tyler's tracks have a magic that draws you into the essence of the song. “As a vocalist myself, I tend to pay special attention to how the vocals interact both rhythmically and melodically with the rest of the track.” But make no mistake, at the core of every track is the beat, ready to groove your body at any BPM. Tyler's production savvy can also be heard in her DJ skills spinning deep house, disco and downtempo. Whether opening for Little Dragon, or playing the private after parties for such bands as Thievery Corporation and Mayor Hawthorne's Tuxedo, Tyler brings an infectious groove to the party. She has also held residencies at the W Hotel and Ian Schrager's Clift Hotel and has been called upon frequently to play at exclusive events for the SFMOMA and Make-A-Wish Foundation. Tyler is an active voting member of the Recording Academy (GRAMMY's) and has served as a National Trustee, as well as Governor for the Pacific NW and San Francisco Chapters. Tyler has proudly participated on many committees involving the awards process, membership, advocacy and community outreach. She currently lives in Portland, Oregon where she serves on the Board of MusicPortland, a non-profit trade association and advocacy group dedicated to establishing a viable and thriving ecosystem within Portland's music community. Recognising the burgeoning house music scene, alongside Mark Finkelstein, Gladys co-founded Strictly Rhythm - a label that helped launch the careers of superstars such as Roger Sanchez, Armand Van Helden and Louie Vega. The decade-spanning career of Roy Davis Jr. is intrinsically intertwined with the history of house music. As one of the defining voices of Chicago's underground, he's worked both behind the decks and behind-the-scenes. From handling Strictly Rhythm's A&R sector in the '90s to joining seminal production crew Phuture to launching his own Undaground Therapy Muzik label, Davis Jr. isn't just a veteran but a compendium of dance music knowledge. Daft Punk cites him as an influence while the likes of Disclosure, Zed Bias and Waajeed have sought him out for collaborations. He may be best known for his 1998 single Gabriel with Peven Everett—now a garage anthem on both sides of the Atlantic—but his discography and DJ sets go well beyond club hits. Weaving in soul, gospel, disco, techno and acid into a deep house framework, he marries raw funk, plush melodies, hypnotic synths and stripped-down arrangements. All these elements are beautifully captured on his RA Podcast. Moving from a state of eyes-closed bliss to body-moving grooves, the near two-hour session is as grounding as it is free-floating. Spiritual, sensual and tightly mixed, it's a lesson in multifaceted house music.
