Send us a textHi everybody and welcome to today's episode of Attendance Bias. I am your host, Brian Weinstein. Today's guest is kickass bassist, singer, songwriter, bandleader, musical omnivore and big-time Phishhead, Karina Rykman. If you've been paying attention to the jamband and jamband-adjacent scene for any time over the past 5 years or so, or maybe a bit longer than that, I imagine that you've heard of, seen the same of, or been lucky enough to hear Karina Rykman. She performs live with her guitarist and effects-man Adam November and drummer Chris Corsico as a psychedelic bass-led power trio that will blow you away. For those of you who are on a strict Phish diet and may not be familiar with Karina, you should be aware that she has played bass onstage with Mike Gordon in several different configurations and, as of this episode, is preparing to open for him in New Orleans during Jazz Fest. In addition, she has roots with Trey Anastasio and his family going all the way back to her middle school days, and Trey co-produced her debut album, Joyride.Karina and I cover a lot of topics in today's conversation, including our experiences in New York City, her influences in terms of music and life, what it was like to record her album, and her upcoming gig at Webster Hall in New York City on Saturday, May 10. But fear not: there are Phish references and chatter about the band sprinkled throughout our conversation. Also, it wouldn't be an Attendance Bias episode if the guest didn't pick out a special Phish experience, and Karina chose a doozie: October 30, 2010 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City where Phish truly blew everyone's minds with a Tweezerfest that weaved bits and pieces of Led Zeppelin songs throughout. But there's so much more to it than that. Let's join Karina to talk about songwriting craft, rocks off boat cruises, and the best place in Manhattan for smoked salmon as we discuss October 30, 2010 in Atlantic City, and much more.

Fashion is in the midst of mall madness! Alyssa is joined by Casey Lewis, founder of the After School newsletter and Gen Z consumer trends expert, to discuss the rebranding and reinvigoration of the stores they grew up shopping at their local suburban malls, including J.Crew, Abercrombie, Hollister, Gap, Old Navy, Limited Too, Claire's, Victoria's Secret, and more. Tune in for a lively, winding discussion and Casey's insights on how TikTok haul culture is driving Gen Z to the mall; why a marketer's job is so difficult right now (especially for mall brands) and how to successfully capitalize on a moment; the exciting new energy coming from J.Crew's editorial and social media output; the frenzy surrounding the Gap x DÔEN, Gap x Madhappy, and J.Crew x Maryam Nassir Zadeh collaborations; a scene report from the Old Navy x The Cut Fashion Week party at Webster Hall; how mall brands are engaging with culture in a way they haven't previously; the halcyon days of Target and H&M designer collaborations and whether we'll ever get back there; why the Zac Posen era at Gap Inc. feels so promising; whether millennial icons like Alexa Chung (who just partnered with Madewell again after 14 years) and the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show can truly excite a new generation; the Gap Fall 2024 dance commercial featuring Troye Sivan really resonating on TikTok; Tyla being the ticket to Gen Z for both Gap and Victoria's Secret; the Hollister viral babydoll shirt; Abercrombie's fascinating success among elder Gen Zs and younger millennials; the Limited Too comeback and why the brand's catalogs are selling for $150 on Etsy; the renaissance of mall-favorite labels Tory Burch and Coach; and whether this mall mania is simply a result of the Y2K nostalgia wave that fashion can't seem to escape. We had the pleasure of interviewing Eloise over Zoom video!23-year-old London-based singer-songwriter Eloise releases her debut album Drunk On A Flight via AWAL, available everywhere now!Branching out beyond the soft, jazz-tinged soul of her early work, Drunk On A Flight sees Eloise broadening her horizons and applying her pop nous to a much wider palette of sounds. It is a coming of age album about embracing the moment; a heartbreak record that empowers listeners to luxuriate in their feelings –however messy or complicated they may be. Eloise's timelessness, vulnerability, and whip-smart lyrics effortlessly captivate the attention of listeners. The album's title track and first single, “Drunk On A Flight,” is a breezy pop anthem that puts Eloise's natural songwriting abilities at the forefront, the song tells the tale of a love gone sour. “Giant Feelings” details the complicated, messy emotions that Eloise is trying to confront following the end of her relationship. The accompanying music video, directed by Tess Lafia and shot in one take, sees Eloise lamenting over her past relationship while looking out over the city of Los Angeles and ruefully hoping it rains on her former partner. Eloise shows her cleverness and songwriting prowess in the third single, “Therapist,” a whip-smart, sorry-not-sorry “diss track” skewering emotional codependency with kiss-offs like, “you're acting like a boy but I fell for a man.” As Cool Hunting said, Eloise has a true talent for making “expressive, absorbing pop.” The focus track of the album, “I Take It Back,” circles back to the flight mentioned in the album's opener. It's an upbeat, catchy track that details the back-and-forth emotions of a confusing relationship and Eloise reassuring the subject that in case her plane crashes, she takes back the negative things she's said. The visualizer for the new track provides a behind-the-scenes look at the creation of the new record. The album follows two critically-acclaimed EPs, This Thing Called Living (2019) and Eloise's latest project Somewhere In-Between that The Line of Best Fit notes something only “a deft songwriter could manifest.”On October 7th, Eloise will kick off her North American tour at The Foundry in Philadelphia, PA. The 19-date tour spans across both coasts with stops at The Fonda Theatre in Los Angeles and Thalia Hall in Chicago and will conclude on November 3rd at Webster Hall in New York City.Eloise leaned into her long standing love of pure pop and the sense of liberation she was experiencing being single for the first time in four years as inspiration for the album. She challenged herself to continue writing every single day, quickly amassing a pool of more than 50 songs, from which she assembled Drunk On A Flight with South London producer Conor Albert. The resulting record is a deep dive into the complexities of love and relationships, inspired both by observed experiences and Eloise's own dating history. “Ending a long-term relationship at 23, you feel such a loss of time and adolescence and that can make you so frustrated,” she explains. “What have I learned from all of this? And what am I stuck with at the end of all of this? My songwriting has always been honest, but this feels raw –like I'm exploring all the shades of emotion.”We want to hear from you! Bissen on the Virtual Sessions presented by The DJ Sessions 11am PST 10/04/22 About Bissen - Hot off his second mix compilation album, a continuous US tour, a slew of major label remixes for the likes of M83, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Major Lazer, Jojo and Ruth B, two Beatport Top 10 hits over the last couple year with his project Exostate, and a slew of upcoming releases in the pipelines, German-born, New York residing Georg Bissen has never been busier making his mark in the world of EDM. Bissen has created some of the biggest dancefloor smashers in the club scene in recent years, all while also designing sound presets for Ableton Live, Sample Logic and others, writing music for adverts for some of the world's biggest brands, doing sound design and composing for major TV networks, and running his own music licensing, production and publishing business. Storming the scene almost a decade ago with the now classics "Exhale" and "Quicksand," Bissen has, as a dance music artist and producer, had over a hundred original and remix releases since. These records have been released on some of the biggest, most desired and well-respected labels in the industry, including many of the major label imprints. Always in pursuit of a fist-pumping, "all systems go" attitude, Bissen's sound exhibits an effective blend of tough, energetic beats and grooves, coupled with extremely memorable, big melodic riffs and hooks--proper huge tunes for dancefloors, not armchairs, that have lasting impacts on clubgoers and DJs alike. Bissen creates one club banger after another, from his remix of the Black Eyed Peas #1 song "I Gotta Feeling", which was one of Ibiza's summer anthems of 2009 and received extensive UK BBC Radio1 play, to 2011's "2nite U R Perfect", which was one of the year's most memorable club songs, being featured on German and US FM radio, as well as on DMX, reaching millions of shoppers every day; to 2016's remix of The Chainsmoker's "Don't Let Me Down", which got extensive club and US terrestrial radio play, especially on New York's 103.5 WKTU. 2011 saw Bissen start up his project "Exostate" with singer Jeza for Enhanced Recordings, 2 out of 3 singles released so far reaching the Beatport Top 10. In late 2012, along with long-term collaborator Victor Dinaire, Bissen embarked on doing remixes for major artists and labels, starting with the French art rock band M83's "Steve McQueen", received to much critical acclaim, as well as Major Lazer and Flux Pavilion's "Jah No Partial", which went top 25 on the Billboard club charts. With a remix in 2014 for Bingo Players' “Knock You Out” the duo helped propel the release to #1 on the Billboard Club charts, scoring their first #1 record on that chart. Dinaire and Bissen have since lent their hands to dozens of remixes, helping releases chart in the top 10 of the Billboard Club Play Charts numerous times since 2014, with 5 additional #1s so far. In 2016, Dinaire+Bissen remixed Ruth B "Lost Boy", which went into summer-long regular rotation on terrestrial US radio, including WAPE Jacksonville and KKHH Houston. In 2015, alongside Victor Dinaire, Bissen scored the documentary “Glory Daze: The Life and Times of Michael Alig”, which documents the heyday of New York clubbing in the 90s. The soundtrack is an authentic representation of the classic New York club sound of the mid 1990s. The movie saw a North American release in 2016 and can currently be viewed on all major streaming portals as well as on Netflix. In 2016 Bissen started working closely with renowned DJ Tony Moran. Their collaborative effort has spawned over 2 dozen works, including many original records for Moran, as well as joining together for a few remixes. Bissen eventually produced and co-produced over half of Moran's latest double-sided album "Mood Swings." The two updated a cover version of the 90's Lighthouse Family “High” as a charity song for the 2016 Orlando club shooting massacre victim's families. As a DJ, Bissen delivers his no-nonsense approach with exciting and uplifting sets. He boasts over a decade of spinning experience, beginning in college, and continuing in New York, where, for years he djayed at loft parties, which he helped organize. Since 2011, Bissen has seen his international DJ career soar, playing in the UK, Germany and Canada, as well as filling clubs all over the US, including Los Angeles (Circus), San Diego (Hard Rock), Philadelphia (Rumor), Orange County (Sutra) and of course New York, where he currently plays about once a month-- from big rooms such as Pacha and Webster Hall, to more intimate venues, where he can experiment with and debut new tracks. In September 2012 Bissen celebrated the 100th episode of his radioshow and podcast "TranceAtlantic" live at the National Underground in New York. The 8-hour event was broadcast live on ETN.fm. TranceAtlantic is well past its 300th episode now, and is currently broadcast weekly on iHeartRadio, ETN.fm, 1Mix Radio, Party 103, Interference Radio and Party 107, with more syndications forthcoming. A full-time music professional, Bissen has written and collaborated on close to two thousand pieces of music and projects in his decade-long music career. Bissen got his start in the music business when he moved to New York City to work as a composer and engineer in the music for advertising industry. He formed his own music production and licensing company MetaTechnik soon after, which now boasts two offices in New York and Los Angeles. At MetaTechnik, Bissen has produced award-winning music for over 150 major national and international television shows and commercials. Due to this fact, his work is heard by tens of millions of people every week. By staying focused and consistently enhancing his sound and music, Bissen continues to carve his very own niche, with his versatility and far-reaching talents now penetrating almost all facets of the music industry, and growing every day.
