Timestamps: (6:39) - Lauren Dickason Update (13:07) - The Cheshire Murders In July 2007, Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her 11-year-old daughter Michaela went to the grocery store to buy ingredients for a recipe Michaela wanted to make. There, they would cross paths with a man named Joshua Komisarjevsky who would follow them home to plan his next home invasion. That night, Joshua and his accomplice Hayes broke into the family's home and tortured them for hours. In the morning, they forced Jennifer to the bank to withdraw $15,000. Before leaving the bank, Jennifer was able to alert the teller who immediately called 911. Things came crumbling down when Joshua and Hayes realized Dr. William Petit escaped and crawled to a neighbor's home looking for help, despite his severe injuries. The men panicked and used gasoline to light the home ablaze while police set up a perimeter. Jennifer, Michaela and 17-year-old Hayley were all killed inside. Dr. William Petit was the lone survivor of the attack. Blog for this episode Check us out on Patreon for exclusive weekly episodes and ad-free content! They seem terrifyingly possible, and yet impossible at the same time.  This week, WWBD takes a look into one of the most horrific home invasions the United States has ever seen. On July 23, 2007, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes invaded the home of the Petit family in idyllic Cheshire, Connecticut. The events that followed are so terrifying that it leaves us to wonder if and when we are ever really safe.  Linked below is the full poem used in this week's opening, all the charges against Joshua Komisarjevsky and Stephen Hayes, and a YouTube link to the documentary mentioned for those of us who do not have HBO... and it does, in fact, start with trees. Click to Learn MoreJoshua Komisarjevsky journal (Humanity's Social Hypocrisy)Court Documents (Scribd)The Cheshire Murders (YouTube)Join the Conversation

They beat Dr. Petit over the head with a baseball bat and tied him to a pipe in the basement, claiming no one else was going to get hurt and they only wanted money.... This would turn out to be the worst lie Dr. Petit had ever heard when the rest of his family is brutally slain in the burglary. The True Crime Times. (2019, November 4). The Petit Family Nightmare. Hayes and Komisarjevsky would then further their heinous crimes when Komisarjevsky raped 11-year-old Michaela and coaxed Hayes to also rape and strangle Mrs. Petit. This crime shook the Town of Cheshire to its very foundation and destroyed a beautiful and loving family. These two individuals took three innocent lives that day as well. Listen as Hayes talks not only about the why's, what's and who but gives first-hand information about that fateful day. He also delivers several messages not previously out there. Last but not least, listen as he sends a strong message to those who are on the same path as he was and those following a life of crime. Hayes and Komisarjevsky were both originally sentenced to death for their crimes however their sentences were changed to Life Without Parole when Connecticut repealed its Death Penalty. Both men deemed security risks were transferred to Pensylvania in 2016 where they remain today. What is it like on the inside? What are the messages Hayes is sending? TOP 4 MOST TERRIFYING& CREEPY FAMILY MASSACRES Family massacres always manage to capture headlines because they're so extraordinarily heinous. Entire families are terrorized, killed and even tortured for days on end. While they're not common, they do happen - these are the top 4 most terrifying and creepy family massacres. 4. Setagaya Family Massacre Forty four year old Mikio Miyazawa was an employee for a London-based advertising agency called Interbrand while his wife, 41-year old Yasuko, was a schoolteacher. Together they had two children, 8-year old Niina and a 6-year-old son named Rei. On the morning of December 31, 2000, all four family members were found murdered inside their own home in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward. Mother, Father and daughter were found stabbed to death in both the upper and lower floors of the house and little Rei had been strangled on his bed. 3. The Bennett Home Invasion In Aurora Colorado On January 16, 1984 between the hours of 12 and 6 AM an unknown individual entered the Bennett Home. 27 year old Bruce Bennett was awake and signs of a fierce scuffle were found all over the house. Bruce suffered multiple lacerations that eventually took their toll and allowed the intruder to overpower him at which point he finished him off with several blows to the head with a hammer. The killer then went on to attack the women and girls. Debra who was 26 was raped before being fatally bludgeoned and after that he moved on to attack their daughter, 7-year old Melissa who was also sexually assaulted before being beaten to death. Unsatisfied with his kills, he savagely shattered 3-year old Vanessa’s jaw sending bits and pieces of bone into her windpipe, but luckily she managed to survive. 2. The Good Hart Murders The Robinsons just wanted to get away from town and relax at their vacation home on Lake Michigan. A well-off family, they told family and friends they'd be spending some time at their cabin near Good Hart Michigan so when they were gone for nearly a month, no one thought anything was amiss. That is, until their bodies were discovered decomposing in July of 1968. Carpenter Chauncey Bliss approached the small home he had made for the Robinsons expecting to find a dead raccoon inside. A nearby neighbor had called him complaining about a "god awful smell" emanating from the home. There was no answer at the door so he opened it and inside, right by the doorway, is where he found Mrs. Robinson sprawled out with her clothes in disarray. He could see other decomposing bodies behind her, lying in pools of dried blood at which point he ran out and called the police. 1. The Cheshire Murders On the afternoon of July 22, 2007 in suburban Conneticut, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, together with her daughter, Michaela who was 11, dropped by the grocery store to pick up ingredients for a pre-birthday meal Michaela wanted to give to her 17 year old sister, Hayley. What they didn't know however, was that they were followed home by 2 killers. Stephen Hayes, together with Joshua Komisarjevsky, waited for the cover of darkness before entering the home of the Petits. When they went inside, they found William asleep on the couch and they hit him over the head with a baseball bat, bound him then locked him in the basement. The children, as well as their mother, were also bound and gagged inside their respective bedrooms at which point the two suspects ransacked the house looking for cash but couldn't find much. They changed their plan and in the morning, forced Jennifer to withdraw $15000 from her credit line.TOP 4 MOST TERRIFYING& CREEPY FAMILY MASSACRES Crime and murder are heinous acts but slaughtering an entire household for money, revenge or whatever reason is extremely brutal. Add to the fact that most of these crimes have gone unpunished and it makes our faith in humanity hard to defend.

Now that Joshua Komisarjevsky has been sentenced to death we revisit my interview with author Brian McDonald as we discuss In The Middle Of The Night. The affluent suburb of Cheshire, Connecticut, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. William Petit and his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to raise their two lovely daughters… Until July 23, 2007, when, according to police, two ex-cons invaded the Petit home hoping to embark on a routine robbery—one that would ultimately prove deadly. What unfolded at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive was a tragic and horrifying sequence of events that shocked a community and made headlines across the nation. Before the morning was over, Mrs. Hawke-Petit and one of her daughters would be sexually assaulted, the entire house would go up in flames, and only Dr. Petit—his head bloodied, his legs bound—would manage to escape with his life. With the help of neighbors and local police, the two suspects were soon found and captured. Now, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes await trial for murder IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
