On July 23, 2007, Jennifer Hawke-Petit walked into her local bank and alerted the teller that she and her family were being held hostage by two men who were forcing her to withdraw money. The bank called the police, but as they were on the phone Jennifer went back outside and left with her captor. Soon, the Petit home was found on fire, with the bodies of Jennifer and her two daughters inside. The investigation was short—police saw the captors fleeing the property and arrested them immediately. But the big question was why would anybody commit such a horrible crime? In the early morning of July 23, 2007, the town of Cheshire, Connecticut would horrifically be changed forever. After following 48 year old Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her 11 year old daughter, Michaela Petit the night before, Joshua Komisarjevski and his crime partner, Steven Hayes broke into the Petit Family house. Komisarjevski struck the patriarch of the family, Dr. William Petit, over the head with a baseball bat. Both Komisarjevski and Hayes then tied Dr. Petit up in the basement before going upstairs. They then tied up Jennifer and the Petit's daughters, 18 year old Hayley and 11 year old Michaela in their rooms before ransacking the home. Hayes then forced Jennifer to drive to the bank as it opened for the day and take out $15,000. Jennifer told the bank teller what was happening and the teller contacted local police. Upon returning to the home, Hayes and Komisarjevski sexually assaulted Jennifer. Dr. Petit could hear the assault. In a quick moment of adrenaline, Dr. Petit escaped through the basement and ran for help. Komisarjevski had already raped Michaela by the time Hayes and Jennifer returned. After realizing William Petit had escaped, Jennifer was strangled and the two began dumping gasoline all over the house. They went upstairs and doused the girls with gasoline before leaving. The house was then set ablaze. Both men were arrested a block away after crashing the Petit family car. Jennifer, Hayley, and Michaela Petit were all killed. According to autopsy reports, both Hayley and Michaela were alive when the house was set on fire. Both men were eventually sentenced to death by lethal injection. In August 2015, Connecticut voted to abolish capital punishment. As a result, sentences were commuted to life imprisonment.

Bill Petit and his wife Jennifer Hawke-Petit had built a wonderful life. They lived in the upscale neighborhood of Cheshire, Connecticut with their two amazing daughters 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela. In 2007, Jennifer and Michaela were at the grocery when they caught the eye of Joshua Komisarjevsky. Joshua met fellow career criminal Steven Hayes early in 2007 at a halfway house and the two were looking to continue burglarizing houses. They broke into the Petit house on July 23, 2007, and in a bizarre set of events, burned down the house and murdered three of the four members of the familyJoin Mike and Gibby as they discuss the horrific crimes committed against the Petit family. The paths of both Komisarjevsky and Hayes led them to serve time and then ultimately to meet each other just months before the murders. TOP 4 MOST TERRIFYING& CREEPY FAMILY MASSACRES Family massacres always manage to capture headlines because they're so extraordinarily heinous. Entire families are terrorized, killed and even tortured for days on end. While they're not common, they do happen - these are the top 4 most terrifying and creepy family massacres. 4. Setagaya Family Massacre Forty four year old Mikio Miyazawa was an employee for a London-based advertising agency called Interbrand while his wife, 41-year old Yasuko, was a schoolteacher. Together they had two children, 8-year old Niina and a 6-year-old son named Rei. On the morning of December 31, 2000, all four family members were found murdered inside their own home in Tokyo's Setagaya Ward. Mother, Father and daughter were found stabbed to death in both the upper and lower floors of the house and little Rei had been strangled on his bed. 3. The Bennett Home Invasion In Aurora Colorado On January 16, 1984 between the hours of 12 and 6 AM an unknown individual entered the Bennett Home. 27 year old Bruce Bennett was awake and signs of a fierce scuffle were found all over the house. Bruce suffered multiple lacerations that eventually took their toll and allowed the intruder to overpower him at which point he finished him off with several blows to the head with a hammer. The killer then went on to attack the women and girls. Debra who was 26 was raped before being fatally bludgeoned and after that he moved on to attack their daughter, 7-year old Melissa who was also sexually assaulted before being beaten to death. Unsatisfied with his kills, he savagely shattered 3-year old Vanessa’s jaw sending bits and pieces of bone into her windpipe, but luckily she managed to survive. 2. The Good Hart Murders The Robinsons just wanted to get away from town and relax at their vacation home on Lake Michigan. A well-off family, they told family and friends they'd be spending some time at their cabin near Good Hart Michigan so when they were gone for nearly a month, no one thought anything was amiss. That is, until their bodies were discovered decomposing in July of 1968. Carpenter Chauncey Bliss approached the small home he had made for the Robinsons expecting to find a dead raccoon inside. A nearby neighbor had called him complaining about a "god awful smell" emanating from the home. There was no answer at the door so he opened it and inside, right by the doorway, is where he found Mrs. Robinson sprawled out with her clothes in disarray. He could see other decomposing bodies behind her, lying in pools of dried blood at which point he ran out and called the police. 1. The Cheshire Murders On the afternoon of July 22, 2007 in suburban Conneticut, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, together with her daughter, Michaela who was 11, dropped by the grocery store to pick up ingredients for a pre-birthday meal Michaela wanted to give to her 17 year old sister, Hayley. What they didn't know however, was that they were followed home by 2 killers. Stephen Hayes, together with Joshua Komisarjevsky, waited for the cover of darkness before entering the home of the Petits. When they went inside, they found William asleep on the couch and they hit him over the head with a baseball bat, bound him then locked him in the basement. The children, as well as their mother, were also bound and gagged inside their respective bedrooms at which point the two suspects ransacked the house looking for cash but couldn't find much. They changed their plan and in the morning, forced Jennifer to withdraw $15000 from her credit line.TOP 4 MOST TERRIFYING& CREEPY FAMILY MASSACRES Crime and murder are heinous acts but slaughtering an entire household for money, revenge or whatever reason is extremely brutal. Add to the fact that most of these crimes have gone unpunished and it makes our faith in humanity hard to defend.

Now that Joshua Komisarjevsky has been sentenced to death we revisit my interview with author Brian McDonald as we discuss In The Middle Of The Night. The affluent suburb of Cheshire, Connecticut, seemed like the perfect place for Dr. William Petit and his wife, Jennifer Hawke-Petit, to raise their two lovely daughters… Until July 23, 2007, when, according to police, two ex-cons invaded the Petit home hoping to embark on a routine robbery—one that would ultimately prove deadly. What unfolded at 300 Sorghum Mill Drive was a tragic and horrifying sequence of events that shocked a community and made headlines across the nation. Before the morning was over, Mrs. Hawke-Petit and one of her daughters would be sexually assaulted, the entire house would go up in flames, and only Dr. Petit—his head bloodied, his legs bound—would manage to escape with his life. With the help of neighbors and local police, the two suspects were soon found and captured. Now, Joshua Komisarjevsky and Steven Hayes await trial for murder IN THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT.
