In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss two separate cases of foreigners who have gone missing in Mexico. Canadian man Malcom Madsen was a snowbird who enjoyed traveling to Mexico every year.  Malcolm purchased a home near Puerto Vallarta for his girlfriend Marcela Acosta.  In 2018, the couple were seen on CCTV enjoying a night out at a local bar.   Marcela could be seen putting a substance into Malcom's drink.  Minutes later, they left the bar and Malcom was unsteady on his feet.   He has not been seen since.  Marcela and two accomplices have been sentenced to over 50 years in prison in relation to Malcom's disappearance. They went back to their cabin and Amy was seen asleep by her father just after 5am. When he woke up again at 6am, Amy was gone.   27 years later, Amy remains missing. The investigation into her disappearance has been criticized by her family as Royal Caribbean did not want to alarm other passengers on board.    Over the years, there have been many reported sightings of Amy and it is feared that she has been trafficked and is being forced to work in the sex industry. Amie managed to distance herself from Gareth over the following years.  In January 2020, the two had a chance meeting at a public event that Amie was attending and Gareth was working at.  This meeting caused Gareth to fly into a rage which terrified Amie. On Valentine's Day 2020,  Amie attended a burlesque show with her friends. Gareth waited until she left and he broke into her home.  He lay in her bed and waited for. When Amie arrived home, she was brutally attacked by Gareth and he threw her off a balcony, leaving her to die. Daniel walked to a nearby bus stop.  He attempted to flag down a bus, but the driver was unable to stop due to mechanical issues with the vehicle.  A second bus followed behind very shortly.  Daniel was no longer at the bus stop and was never seen alive again. The investigation into Daniel's disappearance was one of the largest ever seen in Australia.  At one stage, there was a reward of $1m offered in the case. In 2011, a sex offender named Brett Peter Cowan was arrested and charged with Daniel's murder.  Cowan had offered Daniel a lift to the shopping centre after the bus failed to stop.   Cowan murdered Daniel within an hour of his abduction.  In this episode of the True Crime Society Podcast, we discuss the abduction and murder of Daniel Morcombe. An investigation was conducted and no charges were laid against Tracey. In November 2022, Tracey was caring for another grandchild, Uriel, who was 7 months old.  Tracey took the baby to a restaurant for lunch and then drove her home.  Instead of taking the baby into the home, Tracey left her in the vehicle and went inside to play the piano.   She insists that she ‘just forgot' that the baby was in the vehicle.  Uriel would pass away from hyperthermia after being left in the car in 90 degree temperatures. Tracey was recently taken to trial for Uriel's death.   Ezra's death was not allowed to be discussed during proceedings.  Tracey has been found not guilty of the manslaughter of Uriel but has been convicted on a lesser charge. Timestamp to skip the intro - (7:38) In October 2024, a 911 call was placed from the home of Tennessee woman Jessica Chandler. When authorities arrived, they found her two children, aged 4 and 1, unresponsive. Both children were declared dead at the scene. When authorities first investigated, it was determined that Jessica had likely poisoned her children before making a superficial attempt to take her own life. Authorities initially believed this as empty medication bottles were found at the scene. This case is unfolding in the courts at the moment and we have since learned that Jessica actually smothered her children with a Lilo and Stitch blanket. Lacey Spears lived an unusual and tumultuous life. Growing up, she told stories about abuse, eating disorders and abortion. None of which have been proven to be true. Lacey gave birth to a son, Garnett, in 2014. She immediately made up lies about Garnett's father and started documenting her sons ‘medical issues' online. Lacey insisted that Garnett have a feeding tube placed because he was unable to tolerate standard feeding. Nurses were skeptical as they were able to feed the baby without any issues. When Garnett was five, he ended up being airlifted to hospital. His sodium levels were so high that a doctor confronted his mother about the situation. Garnett passed away days later and a police investigation began. Lacey was convicted of murdering her son by injecting him with ultra levels of sodium. Authorities believe she suffers from Munchausen syndrome by proxy. Poisoning murders are a very rare occurrence. This method accounts for just under one-half of one percent of murders. One early morning in December 2000, Mike allegedly took his boat and went hunting on Lake Seminole.  Denise raised the alarm when he did not return by noon.  The search for Mike began, and ran for months.  One theory was that Mike had been injured in a boating accident, fallen overboard and drowned.  It was expected that his remains would eventually surface in the lake.  They didn't. Just months after he disappeared, Denise petitioned to have Mike declared dead so that she could claim almost $2m in life insurance.   A judge agreed, despite the usual waiting period in Florida for someone to be declared dead being five years.   Five years after Mike vanished, Denise married his best friend (and life insurance salesman) Brian Winchester.  Their marriage was tumultuous and would eventually end in divorce.  After their marriage fell apart, the truth came out.  Brian and Denise had been having an affair and they worked together to kill Mike.  His remains were found in 2017. Diane made another stop at a gas station looking for a specific over-the-counter pain medication, but the store didn't carry it. After this, Diane pulled over multiple times and was seen hunched over appearing sick outside of the vehicle. One of her nieces called their father and said, ‘There's something wrong with Aunt Diane.'  Family members told Diane to stay where she was, but Diane continued the drive regardless. She drove the wrong way onto the busy Taconic State Parkway and struck another vehicle head-on at a high rate of speed.  The crash became known as the worst fatal motor vehicle accident in Westchester County. 8 people were killed, including Diane, her daughter and all of her nieces. An empty bottle of vodka was found in the wreckage of the vehicle and Diane's BAC was reported to be 0.19%. Soon after, Catherine found out she was pregnant with their third child, so the couple decided to try to make things work.  Mason decided to put an abortion drug into Catherine's beverages, on repeated occasions. Catherine installed cameras in their home when she became suspicious after falling ill. Mason was eventually sentenced to a measly 180 days in jail after pleading guilty to charges of injury to a child and assault of a pregnant person.  The couple's daughter was born 10 weeks premature and now attends therapy 8 times per week and she has developmental delays. Lana Clayton was millionaire Steven Clayton's 7th wife. In 2018, Lana apparently found Steven laying at the bottom of a staircase. She ran outside and flagged down a motorist to ask for help.  Lana initially refused an autopsy for Steven and also told his family that he had no will, which not surprisingly, made them suspicious.  An autopsy was eventually carried out and it was discovered that Lana had poisoned Steven by putting eye drops into his coffee. She is also said to have thrown his phone into a lake so that he could not call for help following the poisoning.   Lana pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and tampering with a food or a drug causing death.  She was sentenced to 25 years in prison without parole. TIMESTAMPS (7:45) - Updates - Matthew Perry (16:55) - Laci Peterson In 2002, Laci Peterson and her husband Scott found out that they were expecting their first child, a son they planned to name Conner. From the outside, the couple appeared to have a picture-perfect life.  Under the surface though, cracks were forming. From early on in their marriage, Scott had a number of affairs with other women.  In November 2002, he began an affair with a woman named Amber Frey.  He told Amber at one point that he had ‘lost his wife' and the upcoming Christmas would be his first without her. On Christmas Eve 2002, Laci was around 8 months pregnant.  Scott said he left her at home watching Martha Stewart and that she was gone when he returned. The search for Laci and her unborn son was one of the most extensive and high-profile ever seen.  Laci and Conner's remains would be found months after they vanished. Scott was arrested near the Mexican border and was charged in relation to the deaths of his wife and son.   22 years later, there is still movement in this case.  An organization called the LA Innocence Project is spearheading a new appeal to prove Scott's alleged innocence. Missouri woman Cassidy Rainwater was down on her luck in 2021.  She told family that she was staying with an acquaintance, James Phelps, until she could get back on her feet,     When Cassidy's family could not get in touch with her, they called in a welfare check.  Police went to James' home and he told authorities that Cassidy had left in July 2021 to move to Colorado. Soon after Cassidy disappeared, an anonymous tip was sent in to the FBI.  The tipster said that there were photos of Cassidy on the dark web.  In the images, Cassidy could be seen being held captive in a cage.     James Phelps and a friend of his, Timothy Norton, would end up being arrested for Cassidy's murder.  The men attacked Cassidy while she was sleeping and ended up dismembering her body.  Packages of her flesh were found in a freezer and had the date ‘July 24;' written on them.  During court proceedings, the men admitted to going to their local Walmart in an attempt to find other victims. Justin ‘Ross' Harris and his wife Leanna had been having marriage troubles for years.  They were trying to stick it out, despite Ross' having numerous affairs.  The couple had one child together, Cooper.  In June 2014, Ross texted one of the women he had been seeing and said "I need an escape. I love my son and all but we both need an escape.” Later that day, Ross took Cooper to breakfast and was meant to drop him off to daycare.  After driving for a mile, Ross somehow forgot that Cooper was in his car seat.  Ross parked the car in direct sunlight, got out of the vehicle and went into work. Seven hours later, after internal temperatures in the car reached around 125f, Ross left work and drove off.  Minutes later, he realized what he had done.  Cooper was dead in his car seat. Ross was charged with malice murder, two counts of felony murder, cruelty to children in the first and second degree, criminal attempt to commit a felony and dissemination of harmful materials to minors.  Many of these charges stemmed from Ross' inappropriate communications with underage females that he engaged in sexting with. Ross was convicted in 2016.  He was sentenced to life imprisonment without parole plus 32 years.   However, in 2024, Ross was released from prison.  A court ruled that there should have been separate trials for the murder charges and the sex-crime charges and his convictions were overturned. Read our blog for this case In the second case, we discuss the death of 4-month-old Tanna Rae Wroblewski.  Tanna Rae was allegedly left alone on a boat in 121f heat on the July 4th weekend this year.  Her parents were said to be swimming and cooling off.  When they returned to check Tanna Rae some time later, she was bleeding from the ears.  The baby was transported to hospital where she passed from heat-related conditions.  There is an investigation into the baby's death ongoing.
