First, some news: It's a wonderful honor to be presenting a special double screening at the wonderful Light Industry on March 18: An Evening with The Last Thing I Saw! Robert Thurman: Immersive Buddhism 35

Robert Thurman's words were the first I ever read about Tibetan Buddhism, describing the inner explorers of its practices as "psychonauts" and its mental tools for liberation "spiritual technology." Few have done as much to advance the understanding and practice of Tibetan Buddhism in the West and I consider him one of my greatest heroes and teachers.  • Scott Snibbe    Robert Thurman, an American author, professor, translator & popularizer of Buddhism, takes a deep dive into immersion through a Buddhist portal, sharing with us, stories & ideas of returning to the essential origin of oneself. Being the father of famed actor Uma Thurman is totally inadequate to describe who he is and where he's been. Born in New York City to the stage actor Elizabeth Dean Farrar (1907–1973), a stage actress, & AP editor & UN translator Beverly Reid Thurman, Jr. got his BA from & also did his graduate studies in Sanskrit at Harvard. He eventually built a house in Woodstock, NY where he lived with his first wife & two children for some time. He has seen much of the world, traveling around Turkey, Iran & India, & moving back to NJ in the US, he became a Buddhist monk, study with Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama to become the first American-born Tibetan Buddhist in 1965. He was the cofounder & president of the Tibet House in New York, established to preserve Tibetan culture. He is also the author of many books on Tibetan Buddhism including his popular translation of The Tibetan Book of the Dead.  Thurman & I exchanged numerous stories of immersive experiences & ideas. This was our first conversation in roughly 60 years. We had met in summer 1960 in New York City through a mutual friend, Bruce Bennett, Thurman's Harvard classmate. Bennett and I were studying organic chemistry in Columbia University summer school. I was studying Organic chemistry as a pre-med. Although, I never went to medical school, organic chemistry and fluid mechanics are seminal to my work as a composer and sound designer Bruce, a fine saxophone player, took me with him to meet Thurman in Thurman's parents' apartment south of the Columbia campus on the Manhattan upper west side. Thurman was then part of the scene around Timothy Leary at Harvard and working with psychedelics.   I was 19 years old, Thurman and Bennett were 20. A few years later Thurman lost one eye in a horrid accident while changing a car tire.  This caused him to change his life. He spent five years traveling in Turkey and Tibet, a journey which would prepare him for a life of scholarship and spiritual growth.  What follows is a 33 minute excerpt of our 75 minute talk, the discussion of immersivity. It begins with Thurman speaking about his friend the Dalai lama. Topics discussed: Buddhism, immersivity, essential origin of the self, Tibetan Book of the Dead, NYC, Bruce Bennett, Timoty Leary-psychedelics, travel, scholarship, meditation, Dalai Lama, the Sami, reindeer, Helsinki, Himalayas, chanting, sound artist, death, clear light, transparent light, nothingness, void, emptiness, aliens, god, hell, freedom, Joseph Cornell, consciousness, life force, 4 points, of confidence, Alexa AI, musicians losing themselves, remembering one's birth, dream chanting, dogs. • Photo: A. EPISODE 33 - “Zachary Scott: Star of the Month (May)” - 04/29/2024 Suave, debonaire, and effortlessly charming, ZACHARY SCOTT is best known for his role in MICHAEL CURTIZ's film noir classic Mildred Pierce (1945). As the duplicitous, silver-tongued charmer Monte Beragon, he romances Mildred, played by JOAN CRAWFORD (in her Oscar-winning role), and Mildred's daughter, Veda (ANN BLYTH). This became Scott's signature role: the sexy cad who was usually at his best swindling, seducing, or being a general scoundrel. It was always fun watching Scott's dastardly ways unfold. He could rock a tux, looked naked without a martini in his hand, and always had a cigarette close by. He was so magnetic that he could even make film-goers feel sorry for him. While he seldom got to play the good guy, when he did, as in what is perhaps one of his best roles in JEAN RENOIR's The Southerner (1945), you realize the versatility that he seldom had the opportunity to display. With a career that included over 40 films and dozens of television roles, ZACHARY SCOTT is our Star of the Month. Next Week's Prompt: In his long autobiographical poem, The Prelude, Wordsworth writes about what he called “spots of time,” small memorable events we experience that thereafter remain in our consciousness and “give profoundest knowledge,” helping us determine who and what we are and what we may become. Write a poem in which you focus on one of these “spots of time” in your own life and what it has subsequently meant to you. #29 Donald Hoffman PHD - USER INTERFACE THEORY EXPLAINED

Chasing Consciousness

In this episode we explore a User Interface Theory of reality. Since the invention of the computer virtual reality theories have been gaining in popularity, often to explain some difficulties around the hard problem of consciousness; but also to explain other non-local anomalies coming out of physics and psychology, like ‘quantum entanglement' or ‘out of body experiences'. As you will hear today the vast majority of cognitive scientists believe consciousness is an emergent phenomena from matter, and that virtual reality theories are science fiction or ‘Woowoo' and new age. One of this podcasts jobs is to look at some of these Woowoo claims and separate the wheat from the chaff, so the open minded among us can find the threshold beyond which evidence based thinking, no matter how contrary to the consensus can be considered and separated from wishful thinking. So who better than hugely respected cognitive scientist and User Interface theorist Don Hoffman to clarify all this. Donald D Hoffman is a full professor of cognitive science at the University of California, Irvine, where he studies consciousness, visual perception and evolutionary psychology using mathematical models and psychophysical experiments. His research subjects include facial attractiveness, the recognition of shape, the perception of motion and colour, the evolution of perception, and the mind-body problem. So he is perfectly placed to comment on how we interpret reality. Hoffman is also the author of ‘The Case Against Reality', the content of which we'll be focusing on today; ‘Visual Intelligence', and the co-author with Bruce Bennett and Chetan Prakash of ‘Observer Mechanics'. What we discuss: 11:20 Seeing the world for survival VS for knowing reality as it truly is 13:30 Competing strategies to maximise ‘fitness' in the evolutionary sense 21:30 The payoff functions that govern evolution do not contain information about the structure of the world 29:30 Space-time cannot be fundamental 37:45 A User-Interface network of conscious agents 41:30 A virtual reality computer analogy 53:30 User Interface theory VS Simulation theory 01:08:00 The notion of truth is deeper than the notion of proof and theory 01:17:30 Is nature written in the language of Maths? 01:27:00 Consciousness is like the living being, and maths is like the bones 01:44:00 Being and experiencing being may co-arise 01:48:00 Different analogies for different eras References: Donald Hoffman - ‘The case against reality: Why evolution hid the truth from our eyes' Nima Arkani-Hamed - ‘Space-time is dead' Nima Arkani-Hamed - 'Reductionism is dead' Local Realism is false Noncontextual realism is false Don Hoffman - Objects of Consciousness paper Gödel's Incompleteness Theorem
